Campgrounds near Old Tappan
Old Tappan sits in Bergen County, New Jersey, on the New York state line about 20 miles north of Manhattan. The borough itself is suburban and has no in-town campgrounds, but it works well as a base: RV travelers can reach state parks in the New Jersey Highlands, Harriman State Park across the New York border, and urban RV options in Jersey City and Brooklyn within an hour's drive.
The closest developed campground with RV-capable sites is Beaver Pond Campground inside Harriman State Park in Rockland County, New York, which accepts trailers and motorhomes up to 30 feet. Wawayanda State Park to the northwest offers seasonal group sites in the NJ Highlands, while Camp Wyanokie provides rustic, tent-only camping adjacent to Norvin Green State Forest. For travelers who want to keep the rig near New York City, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City and Floyd Bennett Field within Gateway National Recreation Area in Brooklyn offer paved or open urban-adjacent stays.
Expect a mix of forested state-park sites with no hookups and a couple of urban lots with more services.
Things to do near Old Tappan
Hiking dominates the outdoor menu. Harriman State Park has more than 200 miles of trails, 31 lakes, and two swimming beaches, and Wawayanda State Park carries a section of the Appalachian Trail plus paddling on Wawayanda Lake. Camp Wyanokie gives access to trails on the Wyanokie plateau maintained by the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, with links into Norvin Green State Forest.
From an Old Tappan base, families can pair outdoor days with New York City trips: Liberty Harbor RV Park sits across the Hudson from Lower Manhattan with PATH access, and Floyd Bennett Field puts riders near Jamaica Bay, Jacob Riis Park, and the Rockaway beaches.
Fishing, kayaking, and lifeguarded swimming beaches are available at both Harriman and Wawayanda in season. Bring bikes for the flat former runways at Floyd Bennett Field.

How to book campgrounds near Old Tappan
New Jersey state park sites, including Wawayanda State Park, are reserved through the state's camping.nj.gov portal, with a booking window that opens up to about 11 months ahead. Beaver Pond Campground at Harriman State Park is booked through ReserveAmerica up to 9 months in advance. Floyd Bennett Field within Gateway National Recreation Area uses Recreation.gov, with reservations available up to 6 months out.
Liberty Harbor RV Park takes reservations directly through its own website and phone line, and it fills quickly on summer weekends because it is one of the few urban RV options near New York City. Camp Wyanokie handles reservations through its own website via the Campspot platform, and it does not accept walk-ins or phone bookings.
Book summer weekends as early as the reservation window opens. Bring the reservation confirmation and photo ID at check-in.
What to expect at nearby campgrounds
State-park campgrounds in this region are rustic. Wawayanda's sites are group sites with no showers and no water at the sites themselves, with water carried from the main office. Beaver Pond Campground at Harriman has flush-toilet comfort stations, showers, laundry, and a dump station, but no electrical hookups at any site, so RV travelers should arrive with full fresh tanks and empty waste tanks.
Liberty Harbor RV Park is the opposite experience: paved sites with full hookups and quick transit access into Manhattan, but little greenery. Floyd Bennett Field is a flat, open former airfield with basic services, and open fires are not permitted.
Roads into Harriman and Wawayanda are paved but winding, and larger Class A rigs should check length limits before booking, as Beaver Pond caps trailers and RVs at 30 feet. Bears are active in the Highlands, so store food in the rig, not at the picnic table. Camp Wyanokie is tent-only and cannot accommodate any RVs, trailers, or pop-ups.
