Campgrounds near Plainfield, New Jersey
Plainfield sits in central Union County, roughly 25 miles southwest of Manhattan and within a short drive of both the New Jersey Highlands and the Jersey Shore. RV travelers using the city as a base can reach urban hookup sites, county-park campgrounds, and rustic forest sites within a one- to two-hour drive. The area is served by I-78, I-287, the Garden State Parkway, and the New Jersey Turnpike, so route planning matters more than distance when timing arrivals.
Close-in options are limited by the density of the metro area. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is the nearest full-hookup RV park and the standard choice for travelers who want to sightsee in New York City without moving the rig. Fla-Net Park, in Flanders in northwestern Morris County, offers a full-hookup alternative off I-80.
For a woodsier trip, Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold Township provides county-run RV sites within reach of Six Flags Great Adventure and the shore, while Camp Wyanokie sits adjacent to Norvin Green State Forest in the northern Highlands. Goodland Country Club and Spa rounds out the nearby options for travelers looking for resort-style amenities.
Things to do near Plainfield
Day trips from a Plainfield base cover a wide range. New York City is a direct drive or NJ Transit ride from Liberty Harbor RV Park, which puts Liberty State Park, the Statue of Liberty ferry, and lower Manhattan within reach. West of the city, the Watchung Reservation and Delaware Water Gap offer hiking, swimming, and paddling.
Turkey Swamp Park is minutes to Six Flags Great Adventure and ocean beaches, making it a practical base for families combining a theme-park day with shore time. This 2,414 acre wooded park features a 17-acre lake for fishing, boating, and ice-skating, along with miles of trails, an archery range and playgrounds.
In the north, Norvin Green State Forest is accessible by foot only and contains an extensive trail system, with trails climbing hills up to 1,300 feet that provide views of the Manhattan skyline and the Wanaque Reservoir, with Camp Wyanokie serving as the primary rustic staging point.

Central New Jersey has a humid continental climate with four clearly separated seasons, and campground availability tracks that pattern closely. Most public campgrounds in the region operate on a spring-through-fall calendar. The family campground at Turkey Swamp Park is open from April 1 to November 15, while the park itself is open year round.
Late spring and early fall offer the best mix of mild temperatures, lower humidity, and fewer bugs. Summer weekends fill quickly at county parks and shore-adjacent sites, so reservations well in advance are the norm. Ticks are a real consideration in wooded areas: to reduce exposure, stay out of tall grass and brush, wear light-colored clothing, tuck pant legs into socks, and check for ticks during and after each visit.
Winter camping is very limited. Liberty Harbor RV Park operates year-round for travelers who want winter access to New York City, but forested and county-park sites generally close by mid-November.

Kimmy T. - Oct 2026
Marc, the owner, and the RV went way beyond my expectations! Marc is super knowledgeable and helpful. The RV had every amenity you could want, was so easy to drive, and very well maintained. Prior to pick up date Marc sent me documentary and video informational instructions that were extremely useful. Marc was always available for any questions whether before or during our trip. We rented the RV for 13 days and traveled pretty far. I have no doubt that because the RV was so comfortable inconvenience. Our trip was effortless. I would definitely rent with Marc again and can’t wait for our next trip!

How to book campgrounds near Plainfield
Reservation systems vary by operator. County parks handle their own bookings directly. At Turkey Swamp Park, reservations are available online or by calling the campground office at 732-462-7286 after 12 p.m. daily, and full payment is required at the time of booking, with a two-night minimum on weekends and three nights on holiday weekends.
The 64 pull-through campsites can accommodate tent campers, travel trailers and motor homes up to 40 feet with up to 6 people; 52 sites can be reserved, while the other 12 are first-come, first-served. Plan accordingly if arriving on a summer Friday without a booking.
Camp Wyanokie is a different model. It is a rustic camping area that cannot accommodate RVs and offers no sites with running water, toilets, electricity, or WiFi, so it is best treated as a tent-only or overflow option rather than an RV destination. Liberty Harbor and private parks like Fla-Net Park and Goodland Country Club and Spa take reservations directly through their own booking channels.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near Plainfield range from urban paved pads with full hookups to wooded pull-throughs with basic electric and water. At Turkey Swamp Park, 52 of the 64 sites can be reserved and 12 are first-come, first-served, and all campsites are pull-through with water and electric hookups. A self-serve dump station is free for registered campers, and the campground has a modern restroom with hot showers and laundry.
Rules on quiet hours and alcohol are strict at county-run sites. At Turkey Swamp Park, alcoholic beverages are not permitted, and quiet hours run from 10 p.m. until 7 a.m.
Wildlife awareness matters in the Highlands. Visitors should review NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife bear-safety tips and report any bear sighting to a Park Ranger or local police. Cell coverage is generally solid near the metro but can drop off in Norvin Green and other forested areas north and west of the city.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Plainfield, NJ
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Plainfield, NJ?
An RV rental in Plainfield is one of the most affordable ways to explore the Northeast, especially compared to NYC hotel pricing. On RVezy you will typically find travel trailers from around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes between $175 and $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs starting around $300 per night. Peak pricing hits during summer weekends from June through August and during fall foliage season in October. For a cheap RV rental in Plainfield, book midweek in May or September, filter for travel trailers or campervans, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Bundling delivery can also reduce fuel and mileage charges, often making the total trip cheaper than driving the rig yourself.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Plainfield,%20New%20JerseyWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Plainfield, NJ?
Great news: a regular New Jersey Class D driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Plainfield, even for large Class A motorhomes used for personal travel. New Jersey does not require any special endorsement or CDL for recreational use, so your everyday license covers you. You'll need to be 25 or older to book on RVezy, and your ID is verified securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. Most first-time renters are surprised how simple the process is, so you can spend less time on paperwork and more time planning your Jersey Shore or Pocono escape.
nj.gov/mvc/license/basicdl.htmWhat protection comes with my Plainfield RV rental?
You are covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Plainfield booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Route 22 or I-78 with confidence. During checkout you choose the protection level that fits your trip, with higher tiers offering lower deductibles and broader coverage for physical damage to the RV. Hosts cannot modify your coverage level, you control that decision at booking. If you are a first-time renter heading toward the Delaware Water Gap, picking a higher-tier package gives you the smallest deductible and the most relaxed drive.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Plainfield RV booking?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets a clear cancellation policy on every reservation, with a grace period right after booking where you can receive a full refund if plans change. Cancellations after that window depend on how far out your trip is. Hosts do not set or alter these policies, RVezy manages them centrally, so you get the same fair treatment whether you are renting a campervan in Plainfield for a weekend or a Class C for a two-week road trip. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy provides a refund or rebooking credit. Book early to lock in your dates and your refund-eligible grace window, then monitor the forecast as your trip approaches.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Plainfield RV trip?
Yes, Plainfield is a great launchpad for a pet-friendly RV rental. On RVezy, toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to instantly see hosts who welcome dogs. Once you are rolling, Union County's nearby Watchung Reservation has miles of leash-friendly trails, and Cedar Brook Park right in Plainfield is great for a pre-trip stretch. Heading out of town? Cheesequake State Park (about 25 miles east) and Worthington State Forest near the Delaware Water Gap both allow leashed pets in their campgrounds. Message the host before booking to confirm any dog size or breed preferences and to ask about pet cleaning fees so there are no surprises at drop-off.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/park/cheesequake-state-parkCan the RV be delivered to me in Plainfield?
Yes, RV delivery in Plainfield is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who would rather not drive a large rig through Central Jersey traffic. Many hosts will deliver to your home, a nearby campground like Cheesequake State Park, or close to Newark Liberty International Airport, which is about 15 miles northeast. They will level the rig, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to find hosts offering this service, and check each listing for per-mile delivery rates. Delivery to a campground saves fuel, mileage fees, and the stress of backing into a site on day one.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Plainfield,%20New%20JerseyHow far can I travel from Plainfield on an RV trip?
You can reach an incredible range of destinations on a Plainfield RV trip thanks to its central location off I-78 and the Garden State Parkway. Popular routes include the Jersey Shore (Asbury Park is about 40 miles southeast), the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (about 60 miles northwest), the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania (about 80 miles west), Cape May (about 140 miles south), and the Catskills in New York (about 110 miles north). RVezy hosts set their own mileage policies, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for longer loops. Filter for unlimited-mileage listings if you are planning a multi-state run, and always confirm the daily mileage cap in the listing before you book.
nps.gov/dewa/index.htmWhere can I camp near Plainfield, NJ?
You have excellent options for RV camping near Plainfield, all within an easy drive. Cheesequake State Park (about 25 miles east in Matawan) offers shaded sites with electric hookups and is the closest state-park campground. Round Valley Recreation Area in Lebanon (about 35 miles west) has a beautiful reservoir setting. For a full-amenity stay, Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm in Sussex County offers a pool, fishing lake, and farm activities. Worthington State Forest along the Delaware River has riverside sites perfect for kayaking. For Manhattan skyline views, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is roughly a 30-minute drive. Book New Jersey State Park sites through the official ReserveNJStateParks system up to several months in advance, especially for summer weekends.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/camping.htmlWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Plainfield?
Late April through mid-October is prime time for RV camping in Plainfield, with the sweet spots being May, June, September, and early October. Spring brings highs in the 60s and 70s with blooming dogwoods across Union County. Summer days reach the mid-80s with high humidity, perfect for Jersey Shore beach trips. Early fall is a local secret with warm days, cool nights in the 50s, and brilliant foliage in the Watchung Mountains and Delaware Water Gap. Winters are cold (20s to 40s) and most NJ state-park campgrounds close their RV loops in the off-season. A mid-September departure helps you dodge crowds, score lower nightly rates, and still enjoy swimming weather at the shore.
weather.gov/phi/I have never rented an RV before. How does the first day work?
You are in good hands, especially if it is your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through the generator, slide-outs, water system, propane, dump procedure, and driving tips specific to that rig. They will answer every question, and you can message them through the RVezy app throughout your trip if anything comes up. Many Plainfield-area hosts also send a video walkthrough before pickup. For your first motorhome rental in Plainfield, choose a Class C or campervan rather than a 35-foot Class A, and book a campground within 90 minutes so you can build confidence before tackling I-78 or the Garden State Parkway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if something goes wrong with the RV on the road?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing for mechanical issues. Plainfield's central location means help is rarely far away, with major service routes along I-78, I-287, and Route 22. For non-emergencies like a question about the awning or water pump, message your host directly through the RVezy app since they know their rig better than anyone. RVezy's support team is also reachable before, during, and after your trip. Snap photos of the RV at pickup, save your host's number to your phone, and keep the roadside-assistance number handy so everyone in the family can find it fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take a Plainfield RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome and easy. From Plainfield you can roll into Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, and beyond using the RVezy protection plan. Popular cross-border routes include the Pocono Mountains in PA, the Finger Lakes in NY, and Acadia National Park in Maine (about 500 miles). Travel into Canada may be permitted, but you must message the host before booking to confirm and arrange any extra paperwork, since cross-border coverage varies by listing. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. If you are heading to upstate New York or Vermont, bring your passport or enhanced driver's license in case you decide to detour into Canada once approved.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Plainfield RV road trip?
Fuel is one of the easiest costs to plan for an RV road trip from Plainfield. New Jersey gas prices typically run near or slightly below the national average, and attendants pump it for you since self-serve is not allowed by state law. Expect roughly 8 to 10 MPG for a Class A, 10 to 14 MPG for a Class C, 16 to 20 MPG for a campervan, and your tow vehicle's normal MPG reduced by 30 to 40% when towing a travel trailer. A 200-mile round trip to the Poconos in a Class C might run $60 to $90 in fuel. Fill up in NJ before crossing into PA or NY where prices and taxes can be higher, and avoid the NJ Turnpike service plazas where fuel often costs more per gallon.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Plainfield?
Book early and you will have your pick of the best sites. New Jersey State Parks (Cheesequake, Round Valley, Worthington, Stokes, Wharton) open reservations through the official ReserveNJStateParks system, and you can typically book several months in advance, which is essential for summer weekends and holidays like Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day, which fill quickly when bookings open. Private parks like Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm and Camp Taylor accept reservations up to 9 to 12 months out. For shoulder-season trips in May or late September, you can usually find availability 2 to 4 weeks ahead. If your dream weekend is sold out, check back on Sunday evenings when cancellations are most often released.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/camping.htmlWhat are driving conditions like around Plainfield, NJ?
Plainfield sits in one of the densest road networks in the country, but with a little planning, RV driving is very manageable. I-78, I-287, and Route 22 are your main arteries and handle big rigs daily. Avoid Manhattan-bound parkways, since the Garden State Parkway prohibits trailers north of Exit 105 and most NYC-area parkways (Palisades, Saw Mill, Bronx River) ban RVs entirely due to low bridges. Stick to I-95 (NJ Turnpike) or I-287 for north-south travel. Rush hour around Newark and Edison runs roughly 6 to 10 AM and 3 to 7 PM, so plan departures around it. Leave Plainfield by 9 AM on Friday to clear NYC-bound traffic, and use a live traffic app to monitor I-78 and Turnpike conditions.
state.nj.us/turnpike/commercial-vehicles.htmlWhat hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Plainfield?
You will find a great mix. Most private parks within an hour of Plainfield, including Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm and Camp Taylor, offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer) along with WiFi, laundry, hot showers, and dump stations. New Jersey State Park campgrounds like Cheesequake and Worthington tend to be more rustic, typically offering electric and water but no sewer at the site, with centralized dump stations available. Most parks sell propane and firewood (NJ requires locally sourced firewood to help prevent the spread of invasive pests like the spotted lanternfly). If your RV needs a fresh-water fill before heading out, the dump station at Cheesequake State Park has a potable water spigot, and many Pilot or Flying J truck stops along I-78 offer RV dumps for a small fee.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/camping.htmlWhat equipment comes with a typical RV rental in Plainfield?
Plainfield RV rentals come ready for adventure. Most listings include a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower, real beds for 2 to 8 sleepers, climate control with roof AC and furnace, fresh, grey, and black water tanks, and seatbelted seats for everyone traveling. Many also include a generator, outdoor awning, outdoor speakers, and a TV. WiFi varies: some hosts include a mobile hotspot, while others rely on campground WiFi (which can be slow at Cheesequake and Worthington). Linens, kitchen kits, camp chairs, and outdoor grills are often available as add-ons. Read the listing's amenities section carefully and confirm anything you cannot live without with the host before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Plainfield,%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect from Plainfield hosts?
Plainfield-area RVezy hosts offer a great menu of add-ons to customize your trip. Common extras include linen and towel kits ($25 to $75), kitchen kits with pots, pans, and dishes ($25 to $50), generator use (typically $3 to $10 per hour beyond included hours), portable grills, bike racks, kayaks, and outdoor patio mats. Pickup is usually from the host's home in Plainfield, North Plainfield, South Plainfield, Scotch Plains, or nearby Edison or Westfield, with delivery available for an extra fee based on distance. Mileage policies typically range from 100 to 150 free miles per day, with $0.35 to $0.50 per additional mile, and some hosts offer unlimited mileage upgrades. Adding the linen and kitchen kit even if you think you will bring your own removes a packing headache and is usually worth the small fee.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Plainfield,%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book a Plainfield RV rental, you pay through RVezy (never directly to the host) using a credit or debit card, and your payment is processed through the platform. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup, typically several hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig's value, and it is released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape with tanks emptied and fuel topped off as agreed. Do a thorough walkthrough video at pickup and drop-off, note any existing scratches in the RVezy app, and follow the host's return checklist (especially dumping tanks and refueling) to ensure your full deposit is returned quickly.
