Campgrounds and RV parks near Pompton Plains, NJ

Pompton Plains sits in Morris County on the edge of New Jersey's Highlands region, within an hour of both New York City and the state's largest state parks and forests. The area gives RV travelers a practical base for exploring the Ramapo and Wyanokie mountains, the Wanaque Reservoir, and the southern reach of Harriman State Park just across the New York line. Campground options in the immediate area lean rustic. Camp Wyanokie in West Milford covers 150 acres of forest with a five-acre lake and miles of hiking trails, offering a large group site and more than ten individual rustic campsites without running water, toilets, electricity, or WiFi. Wawayanda State Park, farther north, is open April 1 to October 31 and offers group tent sites near Wawayanda Lake. For RV travelers who need hookups, options widen once you cross into New York. Beaver Pond Campground adjoins the Lake Welch Recreation Area within Harriman State Park and sits about 25 miles north of the George Washington Bridge. Black Bear Campground in Orange County offers full hookup sites with 30 and 50 amp service, back-in and pull-thru layouts, and is family and pet friendly. For city access, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City works as a base for visiting New York without driving into Manhattan, with 30A and 50A electric and water hookups, restrooms, showers, and laundry.

Public campgrounds use state reservation portals. Wawayanda State Park reservations are made online at camping.nj.gov. For Harriman, Beaver Pond reservations can be made online through ReserveAmerica or by calling the ReserveAmerica Call Center, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. New York State Park campground reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival. Private parks vary. Camp Wyanokie requires reservations for day use or overnight use, handled through its online booking system with no on-site staff. Black Bear Campground accepts reservations by phone. For Liberty Harbor, book directly through the operator; the location is small and fills for weekends and holidays year round due to its proximity to Manhattan.
