Campgrounds and RV parks near Port Norris, NJ

Belleplain State Forest sits within the Pinelands National Reserve and contains saltwater marsh, Atlantic white cedar swamp, mixed hardwood swamp, and oak-hickory forest, with over forty miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, plus hunting, fishing, camping, stargazing, and swimming at Lake Nummy. Belleplain is a well-known birding spot, especially during the spring migration. Fishing is permitted in Lake Nummy, East Creek Pond, Holly Lake, and Cedar Lake, with freshwater species mainly pickerel, sunfish, and catfish. Swimming at Lake Nummy runs Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day while lifeguards are on duty. Beyond the forest, families staying at King Nummy Trail Campground or Spacious Skies Country Oaks are within a short drive of Cape May, the Wildwood boardwalk, and Delaware Bay beaches. Race fans can catch events at New Jersey Motorsports Park in nearby Millville.

Peak camping season runs late spring through early fall. At Belleplain State Forest, the North Shore camping area is open seasonally and closes from November through March, while the Meisle Field area stays open year-round and lean-tos with propane heaters provide a cold-weather option. King Nummy Trail Campground follows a similar seasonal pattern, typically operating from early April through late October. Spring brings migrating songbirds and warblers, making Belleplain a regional birding destination. Summer is the busiest window: swimming at Lake Nummy is guarded from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and shore-adjacent private campgrounds fill quickly around holiday weekends. Fall delivers cooler nights, thinner crowds, and steady fishing at the forest's lakes. Winter camping is limited: most private RV parks close, though Belleplain keeps Meisle Field and its lean-tos available. Ticks and mosquitoes are active from spring through early fall, so pack repellent.

Terrain around Port Norris is flat coastal plain, with sandy soils, pine and oak forest inland, and tidal marsh toward the bay. Roads into the region's campgrounds are generally paved and handle large rigs without issue, though some forest roads can be soft after heavy rain. Expect basic public-campground amenities at Belleplain: flush toilets, hot showers, and laundry facilities, with water and electric hookups available in the CCC campground only. A trailer sanitary station operates year-round, though the hose is unavailable from November through March. Private parks like King Nummy Trail offer full hookups, pools, and camp stores. Cell service is spotty inside the state forest, so download maps ahead of time. Wildlife is active. Deer, coyote, fox, rabbit, opossum, raccoon, flying squirrels, muskrat, and beaver are common within Belleplain State Forest, and black bears are found throughout New Jersey, so do not approach or attract bears by making food available.
