Camping near Rio Grande, New Jersey
Rio Grande sits in Middle Township on Cape May County's southern peninsula, roughly five miles from the Wildwoods boardwalk and about ten miles from downtown Cape May. Its position at the junction of Route 47 and Route 9 makes it a practical base for RV travellers, with grocery stores, fuel, propane, and marine supply within a short drive of most campgrounds.
The surrounding area is dense with private RV parks. Closest options include Beachcomber Camping Resort, Sun Outdoors Cape May, Holly Shores Campground, Acorn Campground, and Sun Retreats Cape May Wildwood. Most are family-focused resorts with full hookups, pools, and bike or shuttle access to nearby beaches.
Public camping is available inland at Belleplain State Forest near Woodbine, which offers 169 tent and trailer sites distributed across North Shore, Meisle Field, and CCC, with water and electric hookups only at the CCC area. Together, the private resorts near the shore and the state forest sites inland give visitors a choice between full-service beach camping and quieter woodland stays.
Things to do around Rio Grande
Beach days dominate the itinerary. The free Wildwoods beaches are the closest stretch, with Cape May's beaches and the Cape May Point Lighthouse a short drive south. The Cape May-Lewes Ferry links the peninsula to Delaware for day trips across the bay.
Wildlife and nature outings are strong here. Cape May Point State Park has hawk-watch platforms and marsh trails, and Belleplain State Forest offers over forty miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, plus fishing, camping, stargazing, and swimming at Lake Nummy.
Family attractions include the Cape May County Park and Zoo, Morey's Piers amusement rides in Wildwood, and whale and dolphin watching cruises out of the Cape May harbour.

Peak season runs mid-June through Labor Day, when Wildwood and Cape May beaches, boardwalks, and amusement piers are in full swing. Private campgrounds fill quickly on summer weekends and holiday periods; sites often book weeks or months ahead. Humidity, thunderstorms, and occasional coastal fog are common through July and August.
Shoulder seasons offer better site availability and cooler weather. Belleplain is a well-known birding spot, especially during the spring migration, while fall hawk migration at Cape May Point runs September through November. Most private resorts operate on a seasonal schedule, typically opening in spring and closing by late October or November.
Winter camping is limited. At Belleplain State Forest, Meisle Field stays open year-round while North Shore closes November through March. The trailer sanitary station operates year-round, though the hose is unavailable from November through March. Most private resorts near the shore close for the off-season, so travellers arriving between December and March should confirm operating dates before booking.
How to book a campsite
Private resorts near Rio Grande take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. For summer weekends and holiday periods, booking several months ahead is realistic; seasonal sites at Beachcomber Camping Resort, Sun Outdoors Cape May, Holly Shores Campground, Acorn Campground, and Sun Retreats Cape May Wildwood turn over quickly.
Public camping at Belleplain State Forest is booked through the New Jersey State Park Service reservation portal. Each site accommodates a maximum of six campers, two vehicles (including trailers), and three tents. There is an additional charge per night for pet-friendly campsites, limited to domestic dogs and cats with a maximum of two pets per permit. Reservations for popular weekends and cabins are recommended well in advance.
Before booking, confirm rig length limits, hookup type, and any age or pet restrictions with the specific campground.
What to expect on arrival
Rio Grande and the surrounding Cape May County roads are RV-friendly, with Routes 47, 9, and the Garden State Parkway providing straightforward access. Traffic backs up on summer Fridays and Sunday evenings around the Parkway's southern exits and the Wildwood bridges, so mid-week arrivals are easier.
Most private resorts near the shore offer full hookups, pools, laundry, camp stores, and planned activities for children. Sites can be tight and closely spaced in peak season. At Belleplain State Forest, only the CCC area has water and electric hookups, and cell service is limited throughout the forest.
Mosquitoes and greenhead flies can be aggressive near marshes from June through August. Pack repellent, screens for open windows, and secure food storage against raccoons.

Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and the refund amount depends on how far in advance you cancel relative to your pickup date. You can review the full cancellation policy on the RVezy Help Center before booking, and RVezy customer support is available if your plans change due to circumstances like a named storm or hurricane evacuation along the Jersey Shore, which can occasionally affect Cape May County in late summer. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps you rebook or provides a refund or credit. Pro tip: book your RV before you book your campground at Cape May or Belleplain State Forest, RV availability tightens faster than campsites in July.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Rio Grande, NJ?

Once you're here, leashed dogs are welcome on trails at Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area and Cape May Point State Park. Cape May city beaches restrict dogs in summer, but Sunset Beach and the off-season shoreline (after September 15) are open to leashed dogs. Seashore Campsites & RV Resort in Cape May and Big Timber Lake Family Camping Resort also welcome leashed pets. Pro tip: message the host about your dog's size and breed before booking, it speeds approval and many hosts even leave a welcome treat.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/capemay.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Rio Grande?
Yes, and this is the easiest way to start your trip. Many Rio Grande hosts offer RV delivery directly to campgrounds like Seashore Campsites & RV Resort, Big Timber Lake Family Camping Resort, Driftwood RV Resort, or Beachcomber Camping Resort in Cape May. The host drives the rig, levels it, hooks up water, electric and sewer, and walks you through every system so you skip the stressful part entirely. Delivery fees usually run $2 to $4 per mile from the host's location, and many include free delivery within 10 to 15 miles. Campervan rental Rio Grande customers love this option since you don't have to back into a tight site. Pro tip: ask about a delivery and pickup bundle, some hosts include setup, propane, and a generator at a discount.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rio%20Grande%2C%20New%20JerseyHow far can I drive on my Rio Grande RV trip?
Plenty far. Rio Grande sits near the southern tip of New Jersey, making it a great launchpad for a Northeast RV road trip from Rio Grande. Atlantic City is about 45 miles north (around 1 hour), Philadelphia is roughly 90 miles (about 2 hours), the Pine Barrens and Wharton State Forest are about 60 miles away, and you can reach Lewes, Delaware via the Cape May-Lewes Ferry in around 85 minutes on the water. New York City is about 150 miles north. Each host sets their own mileage policy on RVezy: some offer unlimited mileage, others include 100 to 150 free miles per day with a small overage fee. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer loop, filter listings for RV rental with unlimited mileage, it can save real money on a Philly-to-Cape-May circuit.

Driftwood RV Resort sits along Route 9 with bayfront views. Big Timber Lake Family Camping Resort in Cape May Court House has a private lake and is great for families. For a quieter, more rustic vibe, Belleplain State Forest is about 30 minutes north with shaded sites under pine and oak. nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/belle.htmlWhen is the best time to take an RV trip from Rio Grande, NJ?
You have three great windows. Peak summer (June through August) brings 75 to 85 degree days, warm Atlantic water, and the full Wildwood boardwalk and Cape May Victorian experience, just expect crowds. Late spring (May to early June) and early fall (September to mid-October) are the locals' favorites: 65 to 78 degree days, fewer crowds, lower rates, and the ocean often stays swimmable into September. Cape May's famous bird migration peaks in September and October at the Cape May Bird Observatory. Winter is quieter, but most beachfront campgrounds close November through March. Pro tip: book a shoulder-season RV trip and you'll get the same beaches plus easier parking, restaurant reservations, and friendlier host pricing.
weather.gov/phi/I've never rented an RV before, is Rio Grande a good place to start?
It's one of the easiest places in the Northeast for first time renting an RV. Roads around Rio Grande and Cape May are flat, well-marked, and built for tourist traffic, with no mountain passes or tight switchbacks. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation at pickup: how to level the rig, dump tanks, run the generator, work the awning, and connect to shore power. You can also message your host throughout the trip with questions. If you'd rather skip driving the rig entirely, choose a host who offers RV delivery and they'll park it at your campsite for you. Pro tip: start with a travel trailer or Class C under 28 feet, they're forgiving to drive and easy to back into Jersey Shore campsites.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002053094-For-rentersWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on the Garden State Parkway, a dead battery at Cape May Point, or a tow out of a sandy lot is one phone call away. The roadside team coordinates tire changes, jump starts, fuel delivery, lockout service, and towing to the nearest qualified shop. RVezy customer support is also available before, during, and after your trip if you need help reaching your host or sorting out a mechanical issue. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone before you leave the host's driveway, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN, it speeds dispatch when you need it most.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Rio Grande RV rental into other states or across the border?
Yes, traveling out of state is one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Rio Grande. Most RVezy hosts allow travel throughout the continental US, including popular routes to Delaware via the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, down to Ocean City and Assateague Island in Maryland, north to the Poconos, or up the coast to New England. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection plan, message the host before booking to confirm. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals due to insurance limitations. Pro tip: the Cape May-Lewes Ferry accepts RVs, reserve your spot online a few weeks in advance and you'll save hours versus driving around the Delaware Bay.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an RV trip from Rio Grande?
Easier than you'd think to estimate. Class B campervans typically get 16 to 20 mpg, Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 mpg, and large Class A rigs land around 6 to 10 mpg. New Jersey remains a full-service state, so an attendant pumps your gas (no awkward fumbling at the diesel pump). For a 4-night trip with about 250 miles of local driving from Rio Grande to Wildwood, Cape May, and Belleplain, plan on roughly $90 to $180 in fuel for a Class C, depending on current pump prices. Pro tip: fill up at the Wawa on Route 9 in Rio Grande before heading out, prices there tend to beat anything closer to the beach towns.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campsite near Rio Grande?
The earlier the better. Cape May County is one of the most popular RV camping Rio Grande destinations on the East Coast. For New Jersey state parks like Belleplain State Forest, reservations can be made up to about 4 months in advance through the New Jersey State Park reservation system, and summer weekends sell out quickly. Private resorts like Seashore Campsites, Driftwood, and Big Timber Lake accept bookings 6 to 12 months out and fill quickly for July 4th, Wildwood event weekends, and Labor Day. Shoulder season (May, September, October) is much easier and you can often book 2 to 4 weeks ahead. Pro tip: if your dates are flexible, target a Sunday-to-Thursday window, you'll have your pick of premium full-hookup pull-through sites with beach shuttle access.
newjerseystateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Rio Grande, NJ?
Refreshingly easy for RV drivers. Rio Grande sits near the southern end of the Garden State Parkway, which is RV-friendly with wide lanes and rest stops. Route 9 and Route 47 are flat two-lane roads connecting the beach towns. Summer Saturday traffic into Wildwood and Cape May can crawl between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., so leave early or after 4 p.m. New Jersey is a full-service-only state for gas, so you stay in the driver's seat. Watch for low coastal fog at sunrise near the marshes around Wildwood Crest. Pro tip: avoid the Cape May-Lewes Ferry line during peak Friday afternoons, midday Tuesday through Thursday is smooth sailing for any motorhome rental Rio Grande.
njta.com/travel-resources/garden-state-parkwayWhat hookups and amenities will I find at Rio Grande area campgrounds?
You'll have everything you need for a comfortable Cape May stay. Most private campgrounds in the Rio Grande and Cape May area, including Seashore Campsites & RV Resort, Driftwood RV Resort, and Big Timber Lake Family Camping Resort, offer full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, and sewer) right at the site, plus Wi-Fi, swimming pools, laundry, propane refill, and on-site dump stations. Belleplain State Forest is more rustic with water spigots and a dump station near the entrance but no electric at most sites, perfect if your rental has a good battery and onboard water tank. You can usually refill fresh water and dump tanks at private parks for a small fee even if you're not staying. Pro tip: ask your host for a 30-to-50-amp adapter and a 25-foot sewer hose, Jersey Shore sites are sometimes set back further than you'd expect.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/belle.htmlWhat's inside a typical Rio Grande RV rental?
More than you'd expect, even smaller rigs come ready for the beach. A typical motorhome rental Rio Grande sleeps 4 to 8 people, with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette, full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink), bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning, furnace, and a dining/lounge area. Seatbelts for traveling passengers are standard. Many hosts also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and lawn chairs. Wi-Fi and onboard generators are common add-ons. Travel trailers offer similar layouts but you'll tow them with your own vehicle (or pay for delivery). Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and amenities like air conditioning, then message the host to confirm beach gear, many include chairs, umbrellas, and a cooler at no extra cost.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rio%20Grande%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with RVezy in Rio Grande?
Lots of useful ones, and they make a Jersey Shore trip easier. Common Rio Grande host add-ons include delivery and setup at your campground (often $2 to $4 per mile), a kitchen kit (pots, plates, utensils), a linen and towel package, a bike rack, generator hours, propane refill, and outdoor furniture. Mileage policies vary by host: some include unlimited miles within New Jersey, others include 100 to 150 miles per day with a per-mile fee beyond that. Pickup is typically at the host's location in Rio Grande, Cape May Court House, or Wildwood, or you can choose delivery straight to your site. Pro tip: bundle delivery, linens, and a kitchen kit, you'll arrive to a made bed and ready-to-cook kitchen with no grocery-store detour required.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Rio%20Grande%2C%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Rio Grande, NJ, you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card, never cash or off-platform transfers, which keeps you protected. A refundable security deposit (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is held on your card before the trip starts and released after the host confirms the RV is returned in good condition. The booking payment is processed through RVezy on the schedule shown at checkout, and the security deposit is separate from the booking total. Pro tip: take a dated video walk-around of the RV at pickup and at return, this five-minute habit is the single best way to ensure your full security deposit comes back fast and without questions.
