Campgrounds and RV parks near Short Hills, NJ

Short Hills sits in Essex County, New Jersey, roughly 25 miles west of Manhattan and within a short drive of both urban RV parks and the wooded Highlands. RV renters use the area as a base for exploring New York City, the Delaware Water Gap, and the lake country of northern New Jersey without staying inside the dense metro core. The closest full-hookup RV option is Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City. West of Short Hills, Fla-Net Park in Flanders serves larger rigs with full hookups, while Camp Wyanokie in West Milford and Wawayanda State Park in the Highlands cover tent and rustic camping needs. For a National Park Service experience, Floyd Bennett Field within Gateway National Recreational Area sits across the harbor in Brooklyn and offers a mix of tent and RV parking sites on former airfield grounds. Together these five properties cover the spread of styles a renter is likely to want: city basecamp, family RV park, rustic tent camp, and state or federal parkland.

Reservation systems vary by property, so plan by park type. Online reservations for Wawayanda State Park can be made at camping.nj.gov, the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry booking portal for state park sites. Group site reservations at Wawayanda may require contacting the park office directly. For Floyd Bennett Field within Gateway National Recreation Area, reservations can be made up to six months in advance online at Recreation.gov, with advance booking required and a 14-night maximum stay. Liberty Harbor RV Park and Fla-Net Park take bookings directly through their own websites or by phone. Camp Wyanokie offers rustic tent camping and group events by reservation through its operator, and does not accommodate RVs, so renters with a motorhome or trailer should route to one of the other four options.
