Six Mile Run camping overview
Six Mile Run sits in Franklin Township, Somerset County, in the heart of central New Jersey. The Six Mile Run Reservoir Site is a 3,037-acre unit of Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park, named for the stream that winds through farmland, forest, and old fields on its way to the Millstone River. Land acquired in the 1960s for a reservoir that was never built now supports 13.5 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, along with hunting in season.
The reservoir site itself does not offer camping, so RV travellers base themselves at private resorts and county or state parks within an hour's drive. Nearby options range from full-hookup RV resorts in Cream Ridge to a wooded county family campground at Turkey Swamp and primitive group sites along the Delaware River at Washington Crossing State Park. The location puts campers within reach of Princeton, New Brunswick, Trenton, and the central Jersey Shore.
Things to do near Six Mile Run
Trail users at the Six Mile Run Reservoir Site can walk, ride, or cycle four blazed trails totalling 13.5 miles, passing the remains of 18th and 19th century farmhouses, Dutch-framed barns, and silos that reflect the area's colonial agricultural history. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1995. Parking is available at 625 Canal Road in Somerset, Jacques Lane, and along Route 27 in New Brunswick.
Beyond the reservoir site, campers can visit Washington Crossing State Park to tour the Visitor Center Museum's Revolutionary War collection, paddle the Delaware and Raritan Canal, fish for bass and bluegill at Turkey Swamp Park's 17-acre lake, or explore Princeton and New Brunswick for dining, museums, and university attractions.

Camping seasons in central New Jersey are shaped by state and county park operating windows. Turkey Swamp Park's family campground and the Nomoco Road group campground both operate from April 1 through November 15, accommodating tents, travel trailers, and motor homes up to 40 feet, with 52 reservable sites and 12 first-come, first-served sites at the family loop. Washington Crossing State Park's four primitive group campsites in the Phillips Farm area typically open from April 1 through October 31, though the park has posted seasonal closures in recent years, so travellers should confirm status before booking.
Private resorts such as Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort in Cream Ridge operate year round, while Timberland Lake Campground and Indian Rock RV Resort follow warm-season schedules typical of the region. Spring and fall bring the mildest hiking conditions on Six Mile Run's easily eroded soils, and summer weekends fill quickly at lakeside campgrounds.

Marc, the owner, and the RV went way beyond my expectations! Marc is super knowledgeable and helpful. The RV had every amenity you could want, was so easy to drive, and very well maintained. Prior to pick up date Marc sent me documentary and video informational instructions that were extremely useful. Marc was always available for any questions whether before or during our trip. We rented the RV for 13 days and traveled pretty far. I have no doubt that because the RV was so comfortable inconvenience. Our trip was effortless. I would definitely rent with Marc again and can’t wait for our next trip!
