Camping near Smithville, New Jersey
Smithville sits in Galloway Township in Atlantic County, roughly 20 minutes from Atlantic City and within reach of Long Beach Island and Cape May. The area centers on Historic Smithville Village, a colonial-style attraction with cobblestone walkways, more than 60 specialty shops, restaurants, and family amenities around Lake Meone including a carousel, paddleboats, and a narrow-gauge train ride. It works well as a base for families combining Jersey Shore beaches, casino trips, and Pine Barrens exploration.
RV renters have a mix of private parks and public forest options within easy reach. Nearby private campgrounds include Shady Pines MH and RV Resort, Atlantic City Blueberry Hill RV Park Morgan RV Resorts, Chestnut Lake RV Campground, Pomona RV Park and Campground, and Turtle Run Campground and RV. Most sit within roughly 30 minutes of Smithville and offer hookups, wooded sites, and family amenities.
For a more rustic experience, Wharton State Forest, the largest single tract of land in the New Jersey State Park System at around 120,000 acres, lies just to the north and provides tent and trailer sites with length restrictions.
Things to do near Smithville
Days split easily between the coast and the Pine Barrens. Atlantic City beaches and boardwalk are about 20 minutes south, Long Beach Island lies a short drive north, and Historic Smithville Village itself offers shopping, paddleboats, a carousel, a narrow-gauge train, and roughly 30 free events a year including car shows, an Oktoberfest, a Dickens Fest in November, and a Victorian-style holiday village in December.
Outdoor options center on Wharton State Forest, which contains a major section of the 50-mile Batona Trail linking Bass River, Wharton, and Brendan T. Byrne State Forests. The forest also has miles of unpaved sand roads used for horseback riding and mountain biking. Swimming, fishing, and paddling are popular at Atsion Lake and along the Mullica, Batsto, Wading, and Oswego Rivers, and the restored village of Batsto preserves 33 historic structures from a former iron and glassmaking community.

Private RV parks near Smithville often require multi-night minimums on summer weekends and fill early for holiday periods.
Spring and fall are quieter and cooler. Historic Smithville concentrates events in these shoulder seasons, including October weekends packed with special programming, a Dickens Fest in November, and a Victorian-style holiday village in December. Wharton State Forest campsites at Atsion and Godfrey Bridge are open year-round, though the Atsion trailer sanitary station operates only from April through October, and potable water at the Mullica River Campground is currently unavailable indefinitely.
Atlantic hurricane season runs from June through November, with the greatest risk from August through October. Nor'easters can also bring heavy wind and coastal flooding in late fall through early spring.

How to book campgrounds near Smithville
State-forest sites at Wharton, including Atsion and Godfrey Bridge, are reserved through the New Jersey State Parks reservation system at camping.nj.gov. Atsion has 50 tent and trailer sites with a maximum trailer length of 22 feet, fire rings, picnic tables, and access to potable water, flush toilets, showers, and an on-site dump station. Atsion requires a two-night minimum stay, and reservations can be made online or in person at the Atsion Office.
Private campgrounds such as Shady Pines MH and RV Resort, Atlantic City Blueberry Hill RV Park Morgan RV Resorts, Chestnut Lake RV Campground, Pomona RV Park and Campground, and Turtle Run Campground and RV take direct reservations through their own websites or phone lines. For summer weekends and holidays, booking several weeks to a few months ahead is advisable, especially for full-hookup pull-through sites that fit larger rentals.
What to expect on the ground
Private RV parks in the Smithville area generally offer full or partial hookups, 30 and 50 amp service, laundry, showers, and family amenities such as pools and playgrounds. Sites tend to be wooded and sandy underfoot, set in or near the Pine Barrens, with easy road access from the Garden State Parkway, Route 9, and the Atlantic City Expressway.
Inside Wharton State Forest, expect basic infrastructure: fire rings, picnic tables, and pit toilets at the primitive campgrounds. Some sites, such as Lower Forge and Mullica River, are accessible only by hiking, canoe, or horseback and have limited or no potable water. Bears and other wildlife are active in the Pine Barrens, so proper food storage is important. RV length limits of 22 feet apply at state-forest campgrounds, so longer rigs will be more comfortable at the private parks closer to town.

nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/bassriver.htmlWhen is the best time of year for a Smithville NJ RV trip?
Smithville shines from late April through October, with the sweet spot being May, June, September, and early October, warm days (70 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit), cooler nights, fewer mosquitoes, and lighter Jersey Shore traffic. July and August bring peak beach season with highs around 85 to 90 degrees and humid evenings, perfect if you want full Atlantic City and LBI energy. Fall is arguably the best-kept secret: Smithville's Oktoberfest, Irish Festival, and pet costume parade make October magical. Winters dip to 25 to 40 degrees and some campgrounds close, but Smithville's Victorian-style holiday village in December is genuinely worth a winterized-RV trip. Check host availability calendars for off-season openings.
weather.gov/phi/I am a first-time renter. Will I be able to handle the RV?
Yes, and you are in great company. Many guests booking an RV rental in Smithville, NJ are first-timers. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through driving, the propane system, water hookups, the awning, slides, and dumping waste. They share their cell number so you can text questions mid-trip, and RVezy support is available 24/7. If you are nervous about driving, choose a smaller Class C or campervan, or book a host who delivers to your campsite. Pro tip: do a slow practice loop in a quiet Galloway Township lot before merging onto the Garden State Parkway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue on my trip?
You are never on your own. Every motorhome rental in Smithville booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on the Atlantic City Expressway, a dead battery at Bass River, or a propane issue at Lake Meone is a single phone call away from help. Tow service, tire service, lockout help, and fuel delivery are all covered. Your host is also your first text-message lifeline for quirks specific to their rig, and RVezy support is reachable around the clock. Save both numbers in your phone before you pull out of the driveway.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Smithville rental across state lines or to Canada?
Yes to most US states, with a quick conversation with your host first. RVezy rentals from Smithville are commonly taken to Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, the Poconos), Delaware (Cape Henlopen via the Cape May-Lewes Ferry), Maryland (Assateague), New York (the Catskills), and New England. Cross-border travel to Canada may be allowed depending on the host and protection plan, so message the host before booking to confirm. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance and protection coverage does not extend there. A popular multi-state route from Smithville is Atlantic City to Cape May to Assateague Island National Seashore, a scenic 4-day loop.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I plan for?
Plan smart and your fuel bill stays reasonable. Class C motorhomes around Smithville average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class A rigs come in at 6 to 10 mpg, campervans hit 15 to 20 mpg, and trailers depend on your tow vehicle. New Jersey gas prices typically run a bit below the national average (and yes, attendants pump it for you, no self-serve in NJ). For a weeklong RV road trip from Smithville covering 600 miles, budget roughly $200 to $400 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up at Wawa or Costco off Route 30 in Egg Harbor Township for the area's best prices before heading north or south.
nj.gov/oag/newsreleases22/Self-Service-Gas.htmlHow far in advance should I book a campground near Smithville?
For peak summer (Memorial Day through Labor Day), book 2 to 4 months ahead, Jersey Shore campgrounds within 20 miles of Smithville fill quickly, especially holiday weekends. New Jersey state park sites at Bass River and Belleplain open reservations through the official NJ State Parks reservation system up to 6 months in advance, and the popular pull-through sites disappear first. Private parks like Shady Pines and Atlantic City North KOA take direct online bookings. Spring and fall? You can often grab sites 2 to 3 weeks out. Pro tip: if everything's sold out, search RVezy for hosts offering delivery to a private property or farm-stay, an underrated way to camp around Smithville.
newjerseystateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Smithville?
Driving an RV around Smithville is refreshingly easy. The area is flat (you're at sea level in the Pine Barrens), roads like Route 9, Moss Mill Road, and the Garden State Parkway are wide and RV-friendly, and exits 44 and 48 of the Parkway lead right into town. The main things to watch: summer beach traffic heading to Atlantic City and LBI on Friday afternoons and Sunday evenings, plus occasional low-clearance bridges in older shore towns (always 11 to 13 feet, well marked). Avoid the Atlantic City Expressway's downtown casino district with a big rig. Pro tip: use the Parkway's southbound exit 48 for the cleanest approach into Historic Smithville Village.
state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/roads/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Smithville?
Most campgrounds within 30 miles of Smithville offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer), and many include WiFi, pools, laundry, camp stores, and dump stations. Shady Pines and Atlantic City North KOA have pool complexes and planned activities. State forests like Bass River and Belleplain offer electric and water sites plus centralized dump stations, but no sewer at the site. Potable water fill-ups are available at every campground entrance. If you need to dump mid-trip, Shady Pines and most KOAs allow non-guest dumping for a small fee ($10 to $20). Pro tip: top off freshwater before leaving the campground, Pine Barrens day trips often have no refill points.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/belleplain.htmlWhat features and amenities come with the RV itself?
You'll be impressed. Even entry-level rentals in Smithville come with a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable sleeping for 2 to 8 people, air conditioning, furnace heat, and a dinette. Mid-range and luxury rigs add features like flat-screen TVs, outdoor speakers, solar panels, backup cameras, power awnings, and built-in generators (great for boondocking near the Pine Barrens). Many also include linens, kitchen kits, camp chairs, and outdoor mats. Every seat used while driving has a seatbelt, important for family RV trips from Smithville. Check the listing's amenities list and message the host if you need something specific like a kid's bunk or a CPAP-friendly outlet.
nj.gov/mvc/vehicles/registration.htmWhat add-ons, mileage policies and pickup details should I know?
Hosts in Smithville often offer helpful add-ons like generators, bike racks, paddleboards, propane fire pits, kitchen kits, linen packages, and even pre-stocked groceries. Mileage policies vary, most hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per day, with extra miles at $0.30 to $0.50 each, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer trips, perfect for hitting Cape May, Philly, and Assateague in one loop. Standard pickup is typically late morning at the host's home in Galloway Township or surrounding Atlantic County, with drop-off in the late morning too. Need delivery instead? Just filter for it. Pro tip: ask about a generator add-on if you're heading to Bass River's non-electric sites.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/wharton.htmlHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card when you book, with no cash changing hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from the booking payment (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) and released back to your card after the trip, assuming no damage or excess cleaning. To avoid deposit issues on your RV rental in Smithville, NJ, do a quick walkaround video at pickup and drop-off, return the rig with a similar fuel level, empty the holding tanks if required, and stay within your mileage allowance. Photograph the odometer at both pickup and return for your records.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat is a local insider tip for my Smithville RV trip?
Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge sits just minutes from Historic Smithville Village, and its 8-mile Wildlife Drive is one of the best birdwatching loops on the East Coast. You can drive the loop in your RV (it is flat, gravel, and one-way) at sunrise to see ospreys, herons, and migrating snow geese over the salt marshes, with the Atlantic City skyline in the distance. Pair it with breakfast in Historic Smithville Village and an afternoon paddleboat on Lake Meone for a uniquely South Jersey day. It is the kind of stop that turns a good campervan rental Smithville trip into a memorable one.
