RV camping near Somerdale, New Jersey
Somerdale sits in Camden County in South Jersey, roughly a fifteen-minute drive from the Delaware River and downtown Philadelphia. The location works well as an RV base: interstates I-295 and the New Jersey Turnpike are close, and campgrounds range from suburban swim-club resorts to state-forest sites deep in the Pine Barrens.
The closest options lean family-oriented. Lake Kandle in nearby Sewell is a private swim club and campground with lake and pool access. Philadelphia South / Clarksboro KOA Holiday sits just off I-295 and functions as the standard commercial RV park for the region, with full hookups and cabins. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: South Jersey and Old Cedar Campground add more rural family-park choices to the east.
For a more natural setting, Atsion Recreational Area at the northern end of Wharton State Forest puts RVers on a lake inside the Pinelands. Together these five options cover most trip styles within a short drive of Somerdale.
Things to do around Somerdale
Philadelphia is the main draw. From a base at Philadelphia South / Clarksboro KOA Holiday, downtown Philly and Camden are about a twenty-minute drive, putting Independence Hall, the waterfront, and the Adventure Aquarium within easy reach. Many campers park the RV and use rideshare into the city.
Closer to camp, Lake Kandle offers on-site swimming, a lake beach, and fishing, which works well for families with younger kids. Atsion Recreational Area has a guarded swimming beach on Atsion Lake, canoe and kayak rentals, and trail access into the Pine Barrens; the Mullica River from Atsion to Pleasant Mills is a popular paddle. Jersey Shore beaches at Ocean City and Atlantic City sit about an hour east.

The RV season in South Jersey runs roughly April through October, with peak demand from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Private parks like Lake Kandle operate seasonally from May 1 to October 1, and most sites are booked as seasonal rentals or fill fast on summer weekends. Philadelphia South / Clarksboro KOA Holiday stays open on a longer schedule and takes year-round reservations, which makes it the default choice for shoulder-season and winter trips.
Summer weekends at Atsion fill early. The recreation area often reaches capacity and closes to new arrivals by mid-morning on hot weekends, so plan to arrive early or visit on a weekday. Swimming is only permitted when lifeguards are on duty.
Fall is the most comfortable stretch for touring Philadelphia and hiking the Pinelands. Winter is cold with occasional snow, and most private parks and the Atsion Ranger Station operate on reduced hours or close entirely.

We had a great experience with RV Cozy Camper. The camper truly lived up to its name — it was clean, comfortable, and well maintained, making our trip relaxing and enjoyable. Everything we needed was thoughtfully provided, and the layout made the space feel welcoming and functional. It was easy to tow and set up, which helped take a lot of stress out of the trip. The attention to detail really showed and made us feel comfortable right away. Communication was smooth and helpful, and any questions we had were answered promptly. Overall, this was a wonderful experience, and we would absolutely recommend RV Cozy Camper to anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable camping option. We would happily use RV Cozy Camper again for future trips!

We had a family reunion out in West Virginia the first week in August. We decided to rent an RV this how I found Rod the owner of the RV. He was very polite and up front we us the whole time. The only down fall is the no pet rule. But we definitely rent from him next year.
Mercedes B. - Aug 2024
We had a blast on our family road trip. "Archie" was easy to drive, clean and comfortable for my family of 3, with room to spare. Rod is a really nice guy and responded quickly to any question we had. We would love to do it again soon

How to book campgrounds near Somerdale
Reservation systems vary by park. Atsion and other New Jersey state park campgrounds are booked through ReserveAmerica; permits are picked up at the Atsion Ranger Station, which keeps limited hours and closes early, so travelers should carry a printed or screenshot copy of the reservation. Lakefront sites at Atsion are the first to go and should be booked well in advance for summer.
Philadelphia South / Clarksboro KOA Holiday books through the KOA website or by phone and offers RV sites, cabins, and long-term stays. Lake Kandle handles registration directly through its own site and skews heavily toward seasonal renters, so nightly availability is limited. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: South Jersey and Old Cedar Campground take reservations directly; book summer weekends and holidays several months out.
What to expect on-site
Expect a clear split between commercial resorts and state-forest camping. Philadelphia South / Clarksboro KOA Holiday offers full hookup RV sites, a pool, a fishing pond, a dog park, and a playground, with paved interior roads and gravel pads. Lake Kandle is set up around a lake beach and pools, with metered electric service, and does not accept tents or pets.
Atsion is a different experience: about 50 sandy tent and trailer sites next to Atsion Lake with fire rings and picnic tables, limited on-site staffing, spotty cell service, and occasional water-pump issues. Sites can flood after heavy rain. Bring extra water, cash for firewood, and plan on a rustic stay rather than a resort.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Somerdale,%20New%20JerseyWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Somerdale, NJ?
Great news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Somerdale, NJ. New Jersey does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special endorsement to operate a motorhome or tow a travel trailer for personal use, so your standard Class D license covers everything from a compact campervan to a 35-foot Class A. To book on RVezy, you simply need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and you'll verify your identity through the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before you fly in, and you're road-ready for your New Jersey RV trip.
state.nj.us/mvc/license/Is RV rental in Somerdale, NJ protected and insured?
Yes, every booking on RVezy includes a protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can focus on the fun parts of your Somerdale RV trip. At checkout, you choose from different renter protection tiers, letting you pick the level of coverage that matches your comfort. The protection plan covers most damage to the vehicle during your rental, giving renters meaningful peace of mind. You select the coverage, not the host, which keeps you in control. Pro tip: review the protection tiers before you confirm, and message your host with any questions about the rig itself before pickup.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Somerdale RV rental?
You can book with confidence. RVezy applies a clear cancellation policy to every reservation, including a money-back grace period right after booking, so committing to your Somerdale RV trip is low-risk. Refund outcomes depend on how far in advance you cancel, and RVezy (not the host) manages the policy, which keeps things consistent and fair. If a Nor'easter or coastal storm threatens your trip dates, contact RVezy support right away so they can help you rebook or refund as appropriate. Pro tip: book early for popular summer weekends near Cape May and the Jersey Shore, when inventory tightens fast.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Somerdale RV rental?
Yes, plenty of hosts welcome pets, so finding a pet-friendly RV rental Somerdale is easy. On RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search and you'll see rigs ready for your four-legged co-pilot. Once you arrive, you'll find great local options to explore together: Wharton State Forest's sandy Pine Barrens trails are leashed-dog friendly, Atsion Recreation Area offers shaded walking paths, and Cooper River Park just minutes from Somerdale has wide-open green space for stretching legs after a drive. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and ask if they include a pet bed or bowls, then pack your dog's vaccination records for any campground check-in.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/whartonstateforest.htmlCan my RV be delivered in Somerdale, NJ?
Yes, RV delivery in Somerdale is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who don't want to drive a big rig through South Jersey traffic. Many local hosts will deliver and set up your motorhome rental at Philadelphia South/Clarksboro KOA, Timberlane Campground in Clarksboro, Old Cedar Campground in Monroeville, or even at your own driveway. They'll level the rig, hook up power and water, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer this service, then message them to confirm distance fees. It's the easiest way to start a family RV trip from Somerdale.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106914-Delivery-optionsHow far can I travel on an RV road trip from Somerdale, NJ?
Plenty far, Somerdale's location in Camden County puts you within an easy day's drive of some of the best RV destinations on the East Coast. Popular routes from Somerdale include Cape May (about 75 miles south, roughly 90 minutes), Long Beach Island (60 miles east), the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania (110 miles north), Assateague Island in Maryland with its wild ponies (140 miles south), and Shenandoah National Park (220 miles southwest). Many hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage or generous daily allowances, perfect for cross-state adventures. Pro tip: filter for unlimited mileage when you search, and if you're new to towing, stick to interstates like I-295 and the Atlantic City Expressway, which are flatter and friendlier than backroads.
state.nj.us/transportation/Where are the best campgrounds near Somerdale, NJ?
You have fantastic choices within an hour of Somerdale. Philadelphia South/Clarksboro KOA Holiday (about 9 miles southwest) offers full hookups, a pool, and themed weekends, perfect for families. Timberlane Campground in Clarksboro is a quieter, family-run option with full hookups and easy interstate access. Old Cedar Campground in Monroeville (about 25 miles) is a wooded, peaceful choice. For state-park RV camping that Somerdale visitors love, Wharton State Forest's Atsion Family Campground and Bass River State Forest both offer rustic sites in the Pine Barrens. Pro tip: book Jersey Shore-adjacent campgrounds 3 to 6 months ahead for summer weekends, and reserve state forest stays through the official New Jersey state park reservation portal.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/When is the best time to rent an RV in Somerdale, NJ?
Late spring through mid-fall is the sweet spot for RV camping Somerdale, with the absolute best weather running from mid-May through late October. Summer highs in South Jersey average 82 to 88 degrees Fahrenheit with humid evenings, perfect for shore trips but warm at campsites. Spring (April to early June) brings 55 to 72 degree days and blooming Pine Barrens, while autumn (late September to October) delivers crisp 50 to 70 degree days and stunning foliage in Wharton State Forest. Winter rentals are limited since most local campgrounds close November through March, though Brendan T. Byrne State Forest stays open year-round. Pro tip: aim for early June or mid-September to dodge peak shore traffic and snag better RV rental New Jersey pricing.
weather.gov/phi/I've never rented an RV before. Is it really doable in Somerdale?
Definitely, first time renting an RV in Somerdale is easier than you think because every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup. They'll walk you through the generator, slide-outs, water and waste systems, propane, and driving tips for the specific rig, so you don't leave until you feel confident. If city driving worries you, skip the Philadelphia bridges and book a host who delivers straight to your campground. A travel trailer or Class C is a great first-timer pick since they handle more like a large van. Pro tip: message your host a day before pickup with any questions, and plan a short first leg, like the 9-mile hop to Clarksboro KOA, to get comfortable before bigger drives.
state.nj.us/transportation/safety/What happens if my RV breaks down during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you're on the Atlantic City Expressway, parked at Cape May Point, or camping in Wharton State Forest. Roadside coverage handles common issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, towing, and fuel delivery. Your host is also a great first call for anything quirky about their specific rig, since they know it best. Pro tip: save the RVezy roadside number and your host's contact in your phone before you leave Somerdale, and carry a basic emergency kit (flashlight, jumper cables, water) just in case.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I drive a Somerdale RV rental into Canada or other states?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome and you can absolutely take your RV across state lines from Somerdale into Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New York, and beyond. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the specific host and protection package, so message the host directly before booking if you're planning a trip to Niagara Falls or Montreal. One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because protection coverage doesn't extend there. Popular multi-state routes from Somerdale include the I-95 corridor down to Washington, DC (about 140 miles) and up to the Finger Lakes in New York (about 250 miles). Pro tip: confirm cross-border plans in writing through RVezy's messaging system for clarity.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I plan for?
Realistic fuel planning makes your Somerdale RV trip budget-friendly. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes get 8 to 14 MPG, and larger Class A rigs run 6 to 10 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but typically drop your truck's MPG by 30 to 40 percent. As of spring 2026, regular gas in the Somerdale and Camden County area runs roughly $3.10 to $3.50 per gallon, and diesel a bit higher. A full tank on a Class C usually covers a round-trip to Cape May with plenty of room to spare. Pro tip: New Jersey is a full-service gas state, so stay in your seat and let the attendant pump for you.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Somerdale?
For the best campgrounds near Somerdale, book as early as you can, especially for summer and holiday weekends. New Jersey state park sites (Wharton, Bass River, Brendan T. Byrne, Parvin) open reservations through the official NJ Outdoors portal up to a year in advance, and prime weekends fill within days of release. Private parks like Philadelphia South/Clarksboro KOA and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park typically take reservations 6 to 12 months out and sell out for July 4th and Labor Day quickly. For shoulder-season trips in April, May, or October, 2 to 4 weeks ahead is usually plenty. Pro tip: if a summer weekend looks fully booked, check back Sunday evenings, when cancellations often free up sites.
njportal.com/dep/njoutdoorsWhat are driving conditions like around Somerdale, NJ?
Somerdale sits in flat, easy-driving South Jersey terrain, which is a relief for new RV drivers. The biggest things to watch are the New Jersey Turnpike and I-295, which carry heavy commuter traffic on weekday mornings and Friday afternoons, plus the Ben Franklin and Walt Whitman bridges into Philadelphia, where RVs over 13 feet 6 inches tall need to mind clearances. Beach traffic on Route 72 to Long Beach Island and the Atlantic City Expressway gets congested Saturday mornings in summer. Avoid the narrow streets of central Philadelphia entirely with your RV. Pro tip: download an RV-specific GPS app that flags low bridges and weight limits, and time your drive to leave Somerdale before 8 a.m. or after 10 a.m. to dodge the worst congestion.
state.nj.us/transportation/commuter/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Somerdale?
Local campgrounds near Somerdale are well-equipped for a comfortable stay. Private parks like Philadelphia South/Clarksboro KOA and Old Cedar Campground offer full hookups (30/50 amp electric, water, sewer), hot showers, laundry, camp stores, propane refills, and on-site dump stations. State forest campgrounds in Wharton and Bass River have more rustic amenities, think water spigots, pit or vault toilets, and central dump stations rather than at-site sewer hookups. For dumping tanks and refilling fresh water between trips, the Clarksboro KOA and Tip Tam Camping Resort both welcome day-use customers for a small fee. Pro tip: confirm electrical amperage with your host before booking so you bring the right adapter, since some older state sites are 20 or 30 amp only.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/What's included inside a typical RV rental in Somerdale?
Expect more comfort than you might think. Most RVs on RVezy in Somerdale come fully equipped for a Jersey Shore or Pine Barrens getaway: real beds with linens (often a queen plus bunks or convertible dinette), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and basic cookware, a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control with both air conditioning and furnace, and seatbelts for everyone riding. Many rigs include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a generator for off-grid power. Wi-Fi varies, some hosts include a mobile hotspot as an add-on. Pro tip: ask your host for a quick inventory list before pickup so you know exactly what's packed, and bring your own pillows for extra comfort.
visitnj.org/things-to-doWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent an RV in Somerdale?
Hosts in Somerdale offer a great mix of useful add-ons to customize your trip: bike racks, kayak or paddleboard mounts, camp chairs and tables, kitchen kits, linen and towel packages, portable grills, generators, and even pet kits run roughly $10 to $50 each. Mileage policies vary, with many hosts offering 100 to 150 free miles per day and some featuring unlimited mileage, which is ideal for longer loops to Cape May or the Poconos. Pickup is straightforward at the host's location in or near Somerdale, and same-day delivery to local campgrounds is widely available. Pro tip: bundle add-ons when you book to lock in availability, especially generators during summer festival season around Atlantic City and Wildwood.
visitnj.org/How does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform, with no cash or side deals with the host. You pay for the rental through RVezy when you book using a credit or debit card, and the platform manages funds, which protects both you and the host. A separate refundable security deposit is also placed on your card before pickup; the exact amount depends on the rig and host. As long as you return the RV on time, clean, with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and undamaged, the deposit is released back to you after the trip ends. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos of the RV inside and out at both pickup and return so any questions are easy to resolve.
