Camping near South Dennis, New Jersey
South Dennis sits in Dennis Township, Cape May County, along the Route 9 corridor between Atlantic City and Cape May. The area is low, sandy, and wooded, with pine and oak forest transitioning to salt marsh toward the bay side. RV renters use it as an inland base for the Jersey Shore, staying in wooded campgrounds and driving 10 to 20 minutes to beaches at Avalon, Stone Harbor, Sea Isle City, Wildwood, and Cape May.
Options near town cover a range of styles. Jersey Shore Airstream Haven is an Airstream-only park set on 38 wooded acres halfway between Atlantic City and Cape May, with full-hookup sites and a volunteer-driven community feel. Driftwood Too! Camping Resorts, Sun Retreats Avalon, Ponderosa Campground, and Avalon Campground round out the closest private parks, most offering pools, hookups, and cabin or trailer rentals for renters who want amenities on site.
Belleplain State Forest, immediately northwest of South Dennis, adds a public option with 169 tent and trailer sites, a mix of forest habitats, and swimming at Lake Nummy.
Things to do around South Dennis
Beaches drive most trips. Avalon and Stone Harbor sit about 10 miles east, Sea Isle City and Wildwood are short drives north and south, and Cape May's Victorian district and lighthouse are roughly 20 minutes away. Boardwalks at Wildwood and Ocean City add rides, arcades, and food stands for family days.
Inland, Belleplain State Forest has more than forty miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, plus fishing and swimming at Lake Nummy. Powered boats on the lake are limited to electric motors only. Belleplain is also a well-known spring bird migration site.
Other nearby stops include the Cape May County Park and Zoo, the Cape May-Lewes Ferry, dolphin-watching cruises out of Wildwood and Cape May, and paved rail-trail sections crossing the county.

Most private campgrounds around South Dennis run a spring-to-fall season. Jersey Shore Haven typically opens Airstream sites from late April through late October. Renters planning shoulder-season trips should confirm exact opening and closing dates directly with each park.
Summer is peak season. July and August bring warm, humid days in the mid-80s Fahrenheit, ocean water in the mid-70s, and full campgrounds. Popular weekends, especially Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day, book out months ahead. Spring is cool and often wet but quieter, and it lines up with strong bird migration through Belleplain and Cape May.
Fall brings mild days, lower humidity, and thinning crowds through October. Belleplain campsites are open all year, though the trailer sanitary station runs without a hose from November through March, so winter RVers should plan water accordingly.
How to book campgrounds near South Dennis
Belleplain State Forest reservations are handled online through the New Jersey State Park Service at camping.nj.gov. Sites include fire rings and picnic tables, water and electric hookups are available at the CCC campground only, and each site accommodates a maximum of six campers, two vehicles, and three tents. Pet-friendly campsites are located within the Meisle and CCC areas at Belleplain.
Private parks near South Dennis, including Jersey Shore Airstream Haven, Driftwood Too! Camping Resorts, Sun Retreats Avalon, Ponderosa Campground, and Avalon Campground, book directly through their own websites or by phone. Summer weekends and holiday weeks fill early, and many parks require multi-night minimums in peak season. RV renters should confirm site length, hookup type, and any big-rig restrictions before booking, since Jersey Shore Haven, for example, lists a 34-foot maximum RV length and is Airstream-only.
What to expect on the ground
Terrain is flat and sandy with wooded cover. Sites at most private parks sit close together, creating a family, communal feel rather than backcountry seclusion. Belleplain sites are more spread out, but cell service in the forest can be weak.
Expect humidity in summer, mosquitoes and greenhead flies near marsh areas, and ticks in wooded sections. Bring bug repellent, and check for ticks after hikes. Most private parks offer pools, laundry, showers, Wi-Fi of varying quality, and dump stations. Golf-cart rentals are common at the larger resorts.
Grocery stores, marine supply, and RV service shops are clustered along Route 9 and the Garden State Parkway corridor. Beach parking and beach tags are handled by each shore town, not by the campgrounds, so plan for a small daily beach fee in summer.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near South Dennis, NJ
How much does it cost to rent an RV in South Dennis, NJ?
RV rental in South Dennis is one of the more affordable ways to experience the Jersey Cape, often beating hotel costs near Cape May or Wildwood. Travel trailers typically run $90 to $180 per night, Class C motorhomes range $175 to $300, and campervans land in between. Summer (June through August) is peak season because shore tourism surges, so booking 3 to 6 months ahead locks in better rates. For a cheap RV rental in South Dennis, target May, September, or early October shoulder weeks when shore traffic thins out. Pro tip: many hosts offer weekly discounts of 10 to 20 percent, which makes a full Jersey Shore vacation surprisingly budget friendly.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=South%20Dennis%2C%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in South Dennis, NJ?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in New Jersey, with no commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement required for any rig on the RVezy platform. You just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your identification during booking, so there's no paperwork to chase. Visiting from outside the United States? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home license, and you're set. Most first-time renters tell us the licensing piece was easier than expected, leaving more brain space for planning beach days in Cape May or birding at Belleplain State Forest.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside help is included with my booking?
Every RVezy booking in South Dennis automatically includes a protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Garden State Parkway with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers most accidental damage to the RV, and you choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), which lets you match protection to your travel style and budget. Roadside help is one phone call away whether you have a flat near Belleplain State Forest or a battery issue at a Cape May campground. Pro tip: review the coverage tiers side by side at checkout to find your comfort zone.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my South Dennis RV trip?
Booking is low risk because RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy, and there's a money-back grace period right after you book that gives you breathing room to firm up plans. After that window, refund amounts depend on how far out from your trip start you cancel, and special situations like hurricanes or tropical storms (a real consideration on the Jersey Cape in late summer) may be handled with additional flexibility. You won't see different cancellation rules listed on individual hosts because the policy is consistent across the platform. Pro tip: lock in your dates early for popular weeks like the Wildwoods Doo Wop weekend or Cape May's Victorian Week, and use the grace period to finalize the rest of your trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a South Dennis RV trip?
Absolutely, and Cape May County is one of the most dog-welcoming corners of the Jersey Shore. Filter for a pet-friendly RV rental in South Dennis on RVezy to instantly see listings where dogs are welcome (many hosts charge a small pet fee, shown upfront). Once you're here, your pup will love Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area trails, the dog-friendly off-season beaches in Cape May (October through April), and the wooded loop trails at Belleplain State Forest. Most local campgrounds like Big Timber Lake and Ocean View Resort accept leashed dogs at the campsite. Pro tip: message hosts directly from the listing if you have a larger breed, two pups, or a senior dog with specific needs.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/belle.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground in South Dennis?
Yes, and RV delivery in South Dennis is one of the best ways to take the stress out of a first Jersey Shore trip. Many local hosts will drive the motorhome or travel trailer right to your campsite at Belleplain State Forest, Big Timber Lake, Ocean View Resort, or Sun Outdoors Cape May, then level it, hook up water, electric, and sewer, and walk you through everything before they leave. Just check the Delivery filter on RVezy and message hosts with your campground name and arrival date. Delivery fees vary by distance, usually $2 to $4 per mile round trip. Pro tip: pair delivery with a motorhome rental in South Dennis so you can skip towing entirely and arrive ready to relax.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=South%20Dennis%2C%20New%20JerseyHow far can I drive on a South Dennis RV trip?
Many South Dennis hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer unlimited mileage packages for road-trip travelers. From here you're about 14 miles to Cape May, 15 miles to Wildwood Crest, 18 miles to Ocean City, and roughly 40 miles to the Atlantic City boardwalk, so a week of shore-hopping rarely cracks 300 miles total. Heading farther afield? Philadelphia sits about 85 miles northwest, and you can reach Assateague Island (wild ponies and beach camping) in roughly 130 miles via the Cape May Lewes Ferry. Pro tip: if you want an RV rental with unlimited mileage, use that filter on RVezy and you'll see qualifying listings instantly.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=South%20Dennis%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat are the best campgrounds near South Dennis, NJ?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to the best campgrounds near South Dennis, NJ. Belleplain State Forest (about 8 miles west in Woodbine) offers 169 wooded sites around Lake Nummy with electric hookups and quiet swimming. Big Timber Lake RV Camping Resort in Cape May Court House has full hookups, a lake, and a heated pool. Ocean View Resort Campground sits 10 miles east and is the largest in the area with 1,100+ sites. Sun Outdoors Cape May (formerly Cape Island) puts you 12 miles from Cape May's Victorian district, and Avalon Campground is a quieter family pick in Clermont. Pro tip: for RV camping in South Dennis during July or August, reserve at least 4 to 6 months ahead because shore campgrounds fill fast.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/belle.htmlWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from South Dennis?
Late May through early October is the sweet spot for a South Dennis RV trip, with warm Atlantic water and full-service campgrounds at peak swing. July and August bring daytime highs in the low to mid 80s Fahrenheit, plus humidity and afternoon thunderstorms, while June and September deliver mid-70s, fewer crowds, and the best campground availability. May and October are gorgeous shoulder months (60s to low 70s) and ideal for birders during the famous Cape May raptor migration in September and October. Winters here are mild for the Northeast (mid-30s to mid-40s), and a handful of campgrounds stay open year-round. Pro tip: book a September week for warm ocean swimming with off-peak pricing and stunning sunsets over Delaware Bay.
weather.gov/phi/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll do great, and South Dennis is a forgiving place for first time renting an RV. Roads in Dennis Township are flat, wide, and mostly rural, with the Garden State Parkway running north to south and easy on-ramps onto secondary routes like US-9 and Route 47. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering leveling, slide-outs, dumping tanks, and using the propane stove, so you leave knowing the rig. Choose a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental in South Dennis if you want the lowest learning curve. Pro tip: plan your first night at a nearby campground like Big Timber Lake (under 10 miles away) so you can settle in close to home base before tackling longer drives.
nj.gov/mvc/license/drivermanual.htmWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 47, a dead battery at Belleplain State Forest, or a tow off the Garden State Parkway is one phone call away. For mechanical questions or how-to issues (like resetting the inverter or relighting the water heater), your host is your first call since they know their rig best, and RVezy customer support is right there as backup. Cape May County has multiple service centers in Cape May Court House and Rio Grande for quick fixes. Pro tip: save the roadside number and your host's number to your phone before you leave the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my South Dennis rental on a road trip to other states or Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from South Dennis is wide open in most directions. From here you can easily reach Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New York with no extra paperwork, and many hosts welcome trips into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Popular routes include the Cape May Lewes Ferry into Delaware, Assateague Island National Seashore (about 2.5 hours), and Shenandoah National Park (about 5 hours). Cross-border trips into Canada require host approval and proper insurance documentation, so message the host before booking. Trips into Mexico are not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: confirm any multi-state itinerary with your host so mileage and route are aligned.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on my South Dennis RV trip?
Fuel is one of the more predictable line items in your budget. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (mpg), Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 mpg, and Class A motorhomes 6 to 10 mpg. New Jersey is a full-service fuel state by law (you stay in the vehicle), with stations easy to find along US-9, Route 47, and the Garden State Parkway. A typical 5-day Cape May County loop covering 200 to 300 miles runs about $90 to $180 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up before exiting the Parkway near the Ocean View service area, where prices are usually friendlier than at the shore towns.
nj.gov/mvc/vehicles/fullservice.htmHow far in advance should I reserve a campsite near South Dennis?
For peak summer (mid-June through Labor Day), book your campsite 4 to 6 months ahead because Cape May County's seasonal population swells and shore campgrounds sell out fast. State park sites at Belleplain State Forest open through the New Jersey state reservation system, and weekends get snapped up the day they release. Private resorts like Big Timber Lake, Ocean View Resort, and Sun Outdoors Cape May take reservations even further out. For September and October trips (still gorgeous on the Cape), 4 to 8 weeks of lead time is usually plenty. Pro tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday or Monday) open up sites that holiday weekenders can't grab, and you'll save on nightly rates too.
newjerseystateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are local driving conditions like around South Dennis?
South Dennis is one of the easier RV-driving zones in New Jersey. The terrain is flat, the Garden State Parkway runs north-south with generous lanes, and US-9 and Route 47 give you scenic, lightly trafficked alternatives. The main thing to watch is summer Saturday traffic heading to and from Cape May, Wildwood, and Ocean City, which can crawl during peak weeks. Stick to weekday or early-morning travel and you'll glide right through. Some Cape May beach towns have weight or height limits on smaller streets, so plan to park-and-bike for downtown visits. Pro tip: the Garden State Parkway has a service plaza at Ocean View for fuel and food, which is handy when you need a quick break before heading farther south.
state.nj.us/turnpike/gsp-travel.htmlWhat hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near South Dennis?
Local campgrounds are well-equipped for any rig. Most private parks (Big Timber Lake, Ocean View Resort, Sun Outdoors Cape May, Avalon Campground) offer full hookups: 30 and 50-amp electric, fresh water, and sewer right at the site, plus pools, laundry, camp stores, and Wi-Fi. Belleplain State Forest has electric and water at many sites along with a centralized dump station and potable water fill. Pro tip: ask your host whether the RV has a 30 or 50-amp shore cord and confirm the campground matches, because adapters are cheap insurance and save you a setup-day errand to the hardware store in Rio Grande.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/belle.htmlWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in South Dennis?
You'll be impressed by how home-like local rentals are. Most South Dennis RVs sleep 4 to 8 with a real queen or king bed, convertible dinette, and bunks or a sofa bed for kids. Kitchens come stocked with a propane stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, sink, and basic cookware. Bathrooms include a toilet, sink, and shower with hot water, and air conditioning plus a furnace are standard for humid Jersey Shore nights and crisp October mornings. Many rigs also include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and an onboard generator or solar setup. Seatbelted seats vary by model, so confirm capacity with your host if traveling with kids. Pro tip: ask about Wi-Fi hotspots, and you can stream movies right at Belleplain State Forest.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=South%20Dennis%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons can I get, and how do pickup and drop-off work?
South Dennis hosts offer plenty of add-ons to make your trip turnkey: linen and towel packages ($30 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, kayaks or paddleboards, generators, propane refills, and full kitchen kits. Pickup is usually at the host's location, with a 60 to 90 minute walkthrough so you leave fully oriented. Drop-off is at the same place unless you've arranged delivery, a popular choice that lets you start and end your vacation without ever driving the rig. Mileage policies vary by listing (free miles are shown upfront), and overage is typically $0.30 to $0.50 per mile. Pro tip: bundle delivery, linens, and a bike rack for a fully outfitted Cape May beach week.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=South%20Dennis%2C%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: RVezy processes everything through the platform with a major credit or debit card, so you never hand money directly to the host. A security deposit is placed as a temporary hold on your card before pickup (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) and is released after drop-off, assuming everything comes back in the same shape it left. Following the host's pre-trip inspection, time-stamped photos, and the return checklist makes the release smooth and fast. Pro tip: use a credit card with a comfortable limit so the deposit hold doesn't squeeze your day-to-day spending on boardwalk fries in Wildwood, fudge in Ocean City, or wine tastings along the Jersey Cape Wine Trail.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from South Dennis?
South Dennis sits at the gateway of the Jersey Cape, and an RV road trip from South Dennis can go in almost any direction. Top picks: Cape May (about 14 miles south) for Victorian architecture and the lighthouse; Wildwood and Wildwood Crest (about 15 miles) for the boardwalk and Doo Wop neon; Ocean City (about 18 miles) for a family-friendly boardwalk; Atlantic City (about 40 miles) for casinos and the Steel Pier; and the Cape May Lewes Ferry into Delaware which opens up Rehoboth Beach and Assateague Island (about 130 miles). Family RV trips from South Dennis love Belleplain State Forest as a quiet, woodsy base camp. Pro tip: build a 5-day loop that combines one inland night at Belleplain with three beach nights in Cape May or Ocean City for the perfect mix.
