Campgrounds and RV parks near South River, NJ

South River sits in central New Jersey's Middlesex County, roughly halfway between New York City and the Jersey Shore. The surrounding region blends suburban towns with pockets of Pine Barrens woodland, giving RV travelers a mix of private resorts and county-park campgrounds within a short drive. Most sites cluster to the south and west, in Freehold Township, Jackson, and Cream Ridge. The closest public option is Turkey Swamp Park, a 2,414-acre wooded park in Freehold Township with a 17-acre lake for fishing, boating, and ice-skating. Private parks in the area include Pine Cone Campgrounds on Georgia Road in Freehold and Timberland Lake Campground in Jackson, both family-run properties with pools, cabins, and hookup sites. Farther south, Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort in Cream Ridge and Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground round out the near-in options. Proximity to Six Flags Great Adventure, Point Pleasant Beach, and Interstate 195 makes this cluster of campgrounds practical for families combining amusement parks, shore days, and woodland camping.

For Turkey Swamp Park, book through the Monmouth County Park System. Reservations open on January 1 for the coming year and can be made online or by calling the campground office at 732-462-7286 after 12 p.m. daily. A two-night minimum applies on weekends (Friday and Saturday), while one-night reservations are allowed Sunday through Thursday. There are 64 wooded family campsites: 52 are reservable with a prepaid fee for at least two nights, and 12 sites are first-come, first-served, so arriving early on a weekday is a viable backup plan. Private parks including Pine Cone Campgrounds, Timberland Lake Campground, Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort, and Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground take reservations directly by phone or through their websites. Popular summer weekends and full-hookup sites fill first, so lock in dates several weeks out for July and August.
