Campgrounds near Springfield, New Jersey
Springfield sits in Union County in northern New Jersey, roughly 20 miles west of Manhattan. The area itself is dense suburbia with no campgrounds inside town limits, so RV travelers base out of parks in three directions: the Hudson waterfront to the east, the New York-New Jersey Highlands to the northwest, and the Jamaica Bay unit of Gateway National Recreation Area to the southeast in Brooklyn.
Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is positioned as an RV basecamp for visiting New York City without driving into Manhattan, with 30A/50A electric and water hookups, restrooms, showers, and laundry. For a woodland experience, Camp Wyanokie sits in the hills of West Milford next to Norvin Green State Forest, with 150 acres of forest and a five-acre lake, and Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover features a 45-acre lake on 160 wooded acres just 50 miles from New York City. Fla-Net Park adds a smaller municipal option, and Floyd Bennett Field offers urban camping with tent and RV sites as part of the Jamaica Bay unit of Gateway National Recreation Area.
Things to do near Springfield
From a Jersey City base, most RV travelers spend days in Manhattan. The NY Waterway Ferry leaves from Liberty Harbor and runs Monday to Friday to Pier 11 at the foot of Wall Street, and other ferry options that run seven days a week are within walking distance. The Grove Street PATH station is a short walk up Marin Boulevard and reaches 33rd Street or the World Trade Center in about 15 minutes.
Outdoor plans work better from the Highlands campgrounds. Camp Wyanokie offers lake shores, hiking trails, fishing, and birdwatching, with direct access to Norvin Green State Forest trails. Panther Lake adds a heated Olympic pool and lake swimming, sandy beach, playground, game room, tennis court, hot tub, basketball court, mini-golf, and planned activities.
On the Brooklyn side, Floyd Bennett Field spans over 1,300 acres of grassland, saltmarshes, tidal mudflats, a marina, and the former airfield, with biking, archery, and gardening among the activities.

Northern New Jersey has a four-season climate with cold, snowy winters and warm, humid summers. Peak camping demand runs Memorial Day through Labor Day, with a strong shoulder in late September and October for fall foliage in the Highlands. Weekend sites at family resorts fill weeks out for holiday weekends.
Seasons vary by park. Liberty Harbor RV Park is open 365 days a year and accepts check-ins 24/7 even when the office is closed. Panther Lake Camping Resort closes October 31 and reopens April 15. Camp Wyanokie operates a defined season with rustic tent camping only.
Gateway's Brooklyn campground has been affected by operator changes. Camp Gateway Brooklyn did not operate during the 2025 season, and the National Park Service is seeking a new concessionaire through a Request for Proposals process, with a reopening date uncertain pending selection of a new operator. Check the current status on Recreation.gov or nps.gov before planning around it.

This is exactly what we wanted for our honeymoon! Jeff made things so easy and made things go smoothly for the rental. He even checked on us to make sure we had no problems or questions. I would recommend this rental for any type of occasion. Couldn’t ask for a more friendly person. Thank you

Marc, the owner, and the RV went way beyond my expectations! Marc is super knowledgeable and helpful. The RV had every amenity you could want, was so easy to drive, and very well maintained. Prior to pick up date Marc sent me documentary and video informational instructions that were extremely useful. Marc was always available for any questions whether before or during our trip. We rented the RV for 13 days and traveled pretty far. I have no doubt that because the RV was so comfortable inconvenience. Our trip was effortless. I would definitely rent with Marc again and can’t wait for our next trip!

How to book
Reservation channels differ by operator. Liberty Harbor RV Park offers water and electric hookups at sites with a dump station available, and the facility includes a heated bathhouse and laundry room. Reservations are handled directly through the park; contact staff by phone or the official site to confirm rig length and site type.
Camp Wyanokie is tents only and cannot accommodate RVs, and reservations are handled through its partner platform Campspot. Panther Lake books directly through its own reservation system, and popular summer weekends fill early.
Camp Gateway Brooklyn at Floyd Bennett Field is currently closed, and the National Park Service is seeking a new concessionaire to operate camping at the site. When it reopens, reservations have historically been handled through Recreation.gov, so check that portal for updated availability.
What to expect on site
Expectations vary widely by park. Campers describe Liberty Harbor RV Park as a basic but practical option with a prime location; the park is essentially a parking lot with hookups rather than a traditional campground, and while sites are close together with minimal privacy, the staff is generally friendly. Larger rigs should study the approach carefully.
At Camp Wyanokie there are no RV accommodations or modern amenities like running water, toilets, electricity, or WiFi; campers use a five-acre lake, hiking trails, fire pits, charcoal grills, and two latrines. Panther Lake is the opposite end of the spectrum, a family resort with organized weekend activities and full amenities.
Floyd Bennett Field is a rustic campground on Jamaica Bay with tent and RV parking sites, vault toilets, showers, and sinks with running water when operating. Open fires are not permitted at Floyd Bennett Field, though grills may be available at certain campsites.
