Campgrounds near Stanhope, New Jersey
Stanhope sits in northwest New Jersey's Skylands region, at the edge of Sussex and Morris counties. The area gives RV travelers quick access to state parks, private resort-style campgrounds, and the lakes and ridges of the New Jersey Highlands, all within about an hour of the New York City metro. Interstate 80 runs a few minutes north of town, making the trip in and out straightforward for larger rigs.
Campground options range from full-hookup private parks to a tent-oriented state park. Fla-Net Park in nearby Flanders and Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover are the closest full-service RV parks, while The Great Divide Campground near Newton adds cabins and planned entertainment. Stephens State Park along the Musconetcong River is the closest public option and is oriented toward tents and smaller trailers.
Goodland Country Club and Spa rounds out the local mix for travelers looking for a resort-style stay near the campgrounds. Together these properties cover most trip styles, from short weekend hookups to longer family stays with pools, lakes, and activities.
Things to do near Stanhope
Water and trails dominate the recreation calendar. Stephens State Park offers trout fishing on the Musconetcong River, along with hiking and mountain biking on marked trails, and picnic areas set along the river. Less than a mile east on Waterloo Road, Saxton Falls preserves the remains of one of the Morris Canal's 23 locks and a section of the old towpath.
Private campgrounds add family amenities. Panther Lake Camping Resort centers on a 45-acre lake with a sandy beach, swimming pool, boat rentals, mini golf, and courts for tennis, pickleball, and basketball. The Great Divide Campground runs live music and organized activities during the season, plus a heated pool, a stocked fishing lake, free kayaks, and a dog park.

The camping season in this part of New Jersey runs roughly from spring through mid-fall. Stephens State Park is open for camping April 1 through October 31, and private parks follow a similar window: Panther Lake Camping Resort operates April 15 through October 31, and The Great Divide Campground runs May 1 through mid-October, with seasonal sites available. Outside those months most sites, water lines, and bathhouses are closed.
Summer is peak season. Weekends in July and August at lake-based resorts fill weeks in advance, and holiday weekends often sell out earliest. Late spring and early fall bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and easier reservations, though nights can still drop toward freezing in April and late October.
Fall foliage in the Highlands typically peaks in mid to late October, making it a strong window for hiking and river trips. Trout stocking on the Musconetcong River draws anglers in spring, and mosquito and tick activity peaks from late May through August, so pack accordingly.

I accept the charges as followed. However I do not accept charge for 4 days. I only had the vehicle for 3 days. I'd like to dispute the 4th day charged for 250.00

How to book campgrounds near Stanhope
Stephens State Park is reserved through the New Jersey state park reservation system operated by the Department of Environmental Protection. The campground has 40 tent and small-trailer sites with fire rings and picnic tables, with a maximum trailer length around 40 feet, so verify site dimensions before booking a larger rig. Check-in is at the park office, which may keep limited hours.
Private campgrounds are booked directly through each property's website or by phone. Panther Lake Camping Resort, The Great Divide Campground, and Fla-Net Park all take reservations for RV sites, cabins, and rentals; popular summer weekends should be booked weeks or months out. For larger rigs, confirm amp service (30 vs 50), sewer or pump-out availability, and pull-through length when reserving.
What to expect on the ground
Sites vary widely by property. Panther Lake is a large resort with several hundred sites, many held by seasonal residents, so expect a neighborhood feel with established setups alongside transient sites. The Great Divide offers wooded and open sites across roughly 100 acres, with 30-amp electric plus water, and sewer or pump-out service on request.
Cell coverage is uneven across the region and can be spotty inside wooded campgrounds; downloading maps and reservation confirmations before arrival is a good habit. The Great Divide draws a lively weekend crowd around live music, while Stephens State Park is quieter and closer to a traditional state-park experience, with river sounds and shady sites.
Bring layers for cool nights, insect repellent in summer, and standard freshwater tackle if you plan to fish the Musconetcong or the campground lakes.

rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stanhope%2C%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Stanhope, NJ?
Good news for first-timers: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Stanhope. New Jersey does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement to operate a motorhome for personal use, even larger Class A rigs. On RVezy, approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and your ID is verified through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with your home-country license. At pickup, your host walks you through every system so you feel confident before leaving the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Stanhope covered if something goes wrong?
Yes, peace of mind is built into every booking. Every RV rental in Stanhope, NJ booked on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance. Protection plans cover most damage to the RV, and you can choose from different coverage levels at checkout to match the level of protection you want, whether you're heading to Panther Lake Camping Resort or taking a longer Stanhope RV trip up to the Catskills. This isn't traditional auto insurance, but it provides meaningful financial protection so you can focus on enjoying the trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Stanhope RV rental?
You can book with confidence. RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy that applies to every reservation, and refund eligibility depends on how far out from your trip start date you cancel and whether unusual circumstances like severe weather are involved. Northwest New Jersey weather can shift quickly between Lake Hopatcong and the Skylands, so it's reassuring to know there's a clear, consistent policy. Full details are available in the RVezy Help Center, and the support team is available before, during, and after every trip if your plans change.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Stanhope, NJ?
Absolutely. Many hosts on RVezy offer a pet-friendly RV rental in Stanhope, NJ. Use the Pet-Friendly filter when searching to see listings that welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Stanhope is a great launching point for paws and people: Allamuchy Mountain State Park has miles of leash-friendly trails just minutes away, and Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in nearby Jefferson allows leashed dogs on its trail network. Panther Lake Camping Resort in neighboring Andover is also pet-friendly at most sites. Message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any breed or size notes so check-in is smooth.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/allamuchy.htmlCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Stanhope?
Yes, RV delivery in Stanhope is widely available and it's a game-changer for first-timers. Many RVezy hosts will drive the RV directly to nearby campgrounds like Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover, Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson, or Stephens State Park in Hackettstown, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to find hosts offering this service, and message them with your campsite number so they can confirm setup fees and site dimensions. It's the easiest way to camp without ever driving the rig yourself.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stanhope%2C%20New%20JerseyHow far can I travel from Stanhope on an RV road trip?
Stanhope is one of the best launchpads in New Jersey for an RV road trip thanks to its location right off Interstate 80. Popular RV road trips from Stanhope include the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (about 35 miles west), the Catskills near Phoenicia, NY (about 110 miles north), Cape May at the Jersey Shore (about 165 miles south), and Lancaster's Amish Country in Pennsylvania (about 140 miles southwest). Each RVezy host sets their own mileage policy, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, so filter or message hosts to find the best fit for longer trips.
nps.gov/dewa/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Stanhope, NJ?
You have great options nearby. The best campgrounds near Stanhope, NJ start with Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover, a family resort with a swimming lake, full hookups, and a pool just a few miles from town. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson offers wooded sites with electric and water hookups plus a dump station, about 10 miles east. Stephens State Park in Hackettstown sits along the Musconetcong River with RV-friendly sites about 12 miles southwest. Looking further out, Worthington State Forest along the Delaware River and Jenny Jump State Forest in Hope are both within an hour. Book early; summer weekends at Panther Lake fill months in advance.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/stephens.htmlWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Stanhope, NJ?
Late April through late October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Stanhope, with peak conditions from June through early October. Summer highs typically sit in the upper 70s to mid 80s degrees Fahrenheit, while overnight lows often drop into the 60s thanks to the area's elevation in the Skylands region, making for comfortable sleeping weather. September and early October are a local favorite: fall foliage in the Kittatinny ridges is spectacular and bugs are mostly gone. Winters are cold and snowy (January averages roughly 20 to 33 degrees Fahrenheit), so most area campgrounds close from November through mid-April, though some hosts offer winterized rigs for cold-weather adventurers.
weather.gov/phi/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Stanhope?
Yes, and you're in great company. Many renters in Stanhope are first time renting an RV, and your host's walkthrough at pickup is designed to make sure you leave feeling confident. They'll show you how to operate the leveling jacks, awning, generator, slide-outs, water systems, and dash controls before you drive off. Stanhope is also one of the friendlier launch points in the metro region because you can hop directly onto Interstate 80 west toward the Poconos without navigating Manhattan traffic. If you'd rather skip the driving entirely, choose a host offering delivery and they'll handle the rig from start to finish. Class B campervans and small Class C motorhomes are easiest for beginners.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is just a phone call away whether you're on Route 206 near Stanhope or along the Delaware Water Gap. Roadside assistance can help with flat tires, jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to a qualified service center. Your host is typically a phone call or text away to walk you through quick fixes like resetting a tripped GFCI or relighting the water heater. Tip: take photos of every system during your pickup walkthrough so you have visual references if a question comes up later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Stanhope RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel from Stanhope is easy: Pennsylvania (Poconos), New York (Catskills, Finger Lakes), and the rest of New England are popular routes from this Skylands location. Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed by some hosts depending on their preferences, so message the host directly before booking if Niagara, Montreal, or the Maritimes are on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because protection coverage does not extend there. Routing tip: New Jersey prohibits propane in the Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel, and lower level of the George Washington Bridge, so plan around those crossings when leaving the metro area.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Stanhope RV trip?
Fuel is one of the biggest variables on any motorhome rental Stanhope trip, but it's easy to plan for. Expect roughly 8 to 10 miles per gallon for Class A motorhomes, 10 to 14 mpg for Class C motorhomes and trucks pulling travel trailers, and 18 to 22 mpg for Class B campervans. New Jersey is a full-service state, so an attendant pumps your gas at every station. For a typical weekend trip to the Delaware Water Gap (roughly 70 miles round trip), budget around $40 to $70 in fuel for a Class C. Fill up in Netcong or along Route 80 before heading into more rural Sussex County, where stations are sparser.
nj.gov/mvc/vehicles/How far in advance should I book a campground near Stanhope?
For the best sites near Stanhope, book as early as you can, especially for summer weekends. New Jersey State Park campgrounds like Stephens State Park and Worthington State Forest take reservations through the official New Jersey State Park reservation system, and prime riverside or lakeside sites can be claimed quickly for Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day weekends. Private campgrounds like Panther Lake Camping Resort and Mahlon Dickerson Reservation (a Morris County park) also book heavily for holiday weekends. Midweek availability is dramatically better, and cancellations often free up sites 7 to 14 days out, so set alerts and check back if your first choice is full.
newjerseystateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Stanhope?
Stanhope's location is RV-friendly compared to much of north Jersey. The town sits near the junction of Interstate 80 and Route 206 in the rolling Skylands, so you'll find gentle hills rather than steep mountain grades. Two local things to know: the Garden State Parkway has length restrictions for larger combinations, and propane is banned in the Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel, and lower-level George Washington Bridge crossings into NYC. Summer thunderstorms can bring sudden downpours, and winter brings snow and ice from December through March. Stick to I-80, Route 46, and Route 206 for the smoothest big-rig routes through Sussex and Morris counties.
state.nj.us/transportation/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Stanhope?
You'll find a full range of options for RV camping Stanhope renters love. Panther Lake Camping Resort offers full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), a dump station, swimming pool, lake beach, laundry, and a general store. Mahlon Dickerson Reservation in Jefferson provides electric and water hookups with a shared dump station rather than individual sewer. Stephens State Park has electric and water hookups at most sites, a dump station, hot showers, and flush toilets. For mid-trip dumping and water fills, the dump stations at Mahlon Dickerson and Panther Lake are the most convenient near Stanhope. Always confirm site length, as some older sites max out around 35 feet.
morrisparks.net/index.php/parks/mahlon-dickerson-reservationWhat's included inside a typical RV rental in Stanhope?
Most RVs rented on RVezy in Stanhope come ready to camp. Expect comfortable beds (queens, bunks, and convertible dinettes depending on the floor plan), a full kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with air conditioning and furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many listings also include a generator, TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and basic kitchenware. Built-in Wi-Fi is uncommon, but cell coverage around Stanhope and Lake Hopatcong is generally strong enough for a hotspot. Check the listing's photos and amenity checklist carefully, and ask the host about bedding, towels, and starter kits, since some include them and others charge a small add-on fee.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stanhope%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent an RV in Stanhope?
Hosts in Stanhope offer a flexible menu of extras to customize your trip. Common add-ons include linen and towel packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, generators with included fuel, propane top-offs, and pet cleaning fees if applicable. Most hosts include a base number of free miles per night (often 100 to 150) with additional miles charged per mile, and some offer unlimited mileage packages for longer trips up to the Catskills or down to the Jersey Shore. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Stanhope, but delivery to nearby campgrounds is widely available. Use the Instant Book filter on RVezy to lock in a rig quickly.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stanhope%2C%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, and your funds are held by RVezy until your trip begins, so you never hand cash to the host. The security deposit is separate from your booking payment. RVezy places a temporary hold on your card before the trip (the amount depends on the listing and the protection plan you choose) and releases it after the RV is returned in the agreed condition. To avoid deposit issues on your RV rental in Stanhope, NJ, do a thorough walkthrough at pickup, take time-stamped photos and a short video, return the RV with the agreed fuel level and tanks emptied, and keep all communication with your host in the RVezy messaging thread.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Stanhope for winter or cold-weather camping?
Yes, winter RV trips from Stanhope are possible with the right rig. Some RVezy hosts offer four-season or winterized RVs equipped with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and reliable propane furnaces, ideal for snow trips to Mountain Creek in Vernon (about 25 miles north) or ice fishing on Lake Hopatcong. Stanhope winters are cold, with January averages roughly between 20 and 33 degrees Fahrenheit and regular snowfall, so plan for shore power hookups, extra propane, and skirting if you're staying put for multiple nights. Most public campgrounds close from November through mid-April, but year-round options exist at some private parks and host properties. Message the host to confirm cold-weather readiness before booking.
