Campgrounds near Stone Harbor
Stone Harbor sits on Seven Mile Island on the southern New Jersey coast, roughly 20 miles north of Cape May. The borough is a barrier-island beach community with no campgrounds on the island itself. RV travelers stay on the mainland side of the back bays in Cape May County, then drive over the causeway to reach the beach, restaurants, and the Wetlands Institute.
Most RV parks in the area are private, family-run or franchise resorts clustered around Cape May Court House, Rio Grande, and Cape May. There are no campgrounds directly on the beach, but nearly 50 sit within the wooded mainland areas of Cape May County, giving the Jersey Cape more campsites per square mile than most other resort destinations in New Jersey, with more than 15,000 sites in total.
Options within a short drive of Stone Harbor include Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Cape May, Adventure Bound Cape May, Shellbay Campgrounds, Sea Pines RV Resort and Campground, and Ponderosa Campground. Public land camping is limited on the peninsula itself, so private RV resorts handle almost all of the demand.
Things to do near Stone Harbor
Stone Harbor Point and the adjacent Nummy Island are protected shorebird habitat, with walking access to the beach, salt marsh views, and regular sightings of terns, skimmers, and osprey. The Wetlands Institute on Stone Harbor Boulevard runs guided marsh walks, terrapin programs, and back-bay kayak trips that work well for families with kids.
Within a short drive, the Cape May County Park and Zoo is free to enter, the Cape May Lighthouse offers a climb to the top, and the Wildwoods boardwalk and amusement piers are about 15 minutes south. Anglers can surf-cast from the Stone Harbor beaches or launch small boats into the back bays for flounder and striped bass. Bike paths connect Stone Harbor with Avalon to the north.

The Cape May County private-campground season is tightly compressed. Most area RV parks operate seasonally, typically from April through October, with peak season running from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Outside those months, many private resorts close their bathhouses, pools, and reception offices, and beach parking rules in Stone Harbor shift as the beach-tag season ends.
July and August are the busiest and warmest weeks, with humid days, warm ocean water, and full campground activity schedules. June and September are strong shoulder-season picks: ocean temperatures are still swimmable, mosquitoes are lighter, and reservations open up midweek. May and October bring cooler nights, quieter beaches, and lighter demand, but some amenities may already be scaled back.
Late-summer tropical systems can affect the New Jersey coast between August and October, so RV travelers should watch National Hurricane Center advisories and check whether their campground has evacuation guidance for coastal storms.
How to book a campsite near Stone Harbor
Private resorts in the Cape May area take bookings directly through their own websites or by phone, and summer weekends often fill months in advance. Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Cape May, Adventure Bound Cape May, Shellbay Campgrounds, Sea Pines RV Resort and Campground, and Ponderosa Campground each set their own deposit, cancellation, and minimum-stay rules.
Four-night minimums are common at area resorts on Memorial Day and Labor Day weekends, and three-night minimums are typical for other summer weekends. Holidays such as Independence Day book out first. For state-land alternatives, Belleplain State Forest, about 25 minutes inland, takes reservations through camping.nj.gov up to 11 months ahead of the arrival date, and its campsites are open year-round. Confirm site length, hookup amps, and slide-out clearance before booking, since older shore-area sites can be tight for larger Class A rigs.
What to expect at Stone Harbor campgrounds
Expect wooded, mainland-style RV parks rather than oceanfront sites. Most properties offer water and electric hookups with 20-, 30-, and 50-amp service, plus sewer at premium sites, along with pools, playgrounds, camp stores, and organized weekend activities aimed at families. Many campgrounds provide full hookups for RVs, while tent campers should be prepared for sites that may have limited shade and sandy soil.
The drive from mainland campgrounds to the Stone Harbor beaches runs 10 to 25 minutes depending on location and summer traffic on the causeways. Beach tags are required in Stone Harbor during the summer season for anyone over a set age, sold daily, weekly, or seasonally at borough kiosks. Greenhead flies can be aggressive in the salt marshes in July, and no-see-ums appear at dusk, so screens and repellent are worth packing.

There is a short grace period after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund, and the further out from your trip start date you cancel, the more flexibility you'll generally have. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy will help you rebook or issue a refund. Reach out to RVezy support anytime and they'll walk you through your options.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Stone Harbor RV trip?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Stone Harbor is easy to find on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when you search. Stone Harbor is famously dog-welcoming in the shoulder seasons: dogs are allowed on the borough beaches from October 1 through April 30, and Stone Harbor Point at the south tip of the island is a favorite off-season spot for long, leashed beach walks. For summer trips, base your RV at Belleplain State Forest, which has designated pet-friendly campsites in the Meisle and CCC loops for an extra $5 per night. Pro tip: pack a freshwater rinse jug, the Wetlands Institute trail is great for a quick paw-friendly walk.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/belleplain-state-forest/Can the RV be delivered directly to my campground in Stone Harbor?
Yes, RV delivery in Stone Harbor is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it's perfect if it's your first time renting an RV. Many local hosts will tow or drive your rental straight to popular spots like Sun Outdoors Cape May (about 7 miles south), Seashore Campsites in Cape May Court House, or Belleplain State Forest in Woodbine, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees vary by host and distance. Filter listings by Delivery, message the host with your campsite number, and you'll arrive to a fully set-up home base.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stone%20Harbor%2C%20New%20JerseyHow far can I drive on a Stone Harbor RV trip, and do rentals include unlimited mileage?
You've got plenty of range for a great Jersey Shore loop. Some Stone Harbor hosts offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage, while others include a daily allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day) with a small per-mile fee beyond that. That's easily enough for the highlights: Cape May lighthouse is about 18 miles south, Wildwood boardwalk 8 miles, Atlantic City 40 miles, Long Beach Island 60 miles, and Philadelphia about 90 miles inland. Each listing clearly displays the mileage policy before you book, so there are zero surprises. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer RV road trip from Stone Harbor up the coast, filter specifically for unlimited-mileage rigs.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stone%20Harbor%2C%20New%20JerseyWhere can I park or camp an RV near Stone Harbor?
You've got excellent options for RV camping near Stone Harbor. Sun Outdoors Cape May (about 7 miles south) offers full-hookup sites and a pool. Seashore Campsites & RV Resort in Cape May Court House sits roughly 10 miles west with shaded RV sites and family activities. Avalon Campground is just a few miles north on the mainland side, the closest full-service park to Seven Mile Beach. For a quieter, woodsy vibe, Belleplain State Forest in Woodbine offers trailer-friendly sites with electric and water hookups, about 20 minutes inland. Heads up: the Borough of Stone Harbor does not permit overnight RV parking or sleeping on municipal lots, so always stay at a campground.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/belleplain-state-forest/When is the best time of year to rent an RV in Stone Harbor?
Stone Harbor shines from late May through early October, with peak beach weather in July and August (typical highs in the low to mid 80s °F and warm ocean temperatures around 72 °F). For the sweet spot of warm days, smaller crowds, and lower nightly rates, target late June or the first three weeks of September, when ocean water is still swimmable. May and October bring cooler 60s and 70s, perfect for shoulder-season campers who want to walk dogs on the beach (dogs are allowed October 1 to April 30). Winter campervan rental Stone Harbor trips are possible too, just pick a four-season rig and a campground that stays open year-round, like Belleplain State Forest.
weather.gov/phi/I'm a first-time RV renter. Will I actually be able to figure this thing out?
Yes, and you'll be surprised how quickly it clicks. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup or delivery, showing you how to run the generator, slide-outs, awning, water pump, propane, and dump valves, so you're never left guessing. You can also message the host directly from any listing before you book to ask anything: how it drives over the Stone Harbor Boulevard causeway, whether the kids can comfortably sleep four, anything. For a motorhome rental in Stone Harbor, start with a Class C or campervan, which drives much like a large van. Pro tip: do a slow practice loop through the quiet streets of nearby Avalon before heading to your campground.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stone%20Harbor%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat happens if I have a breakdown or roadside emergency near Stone Harbor?
You're covered. 24/7 roadside assistance is included with every RVezy booking, so a flat tire on the Garden State Parkway or a dead battery at the Wetlands Institute parking lot is just a phone call away. Help can be dispatched anywhere on Seven Mile Beach, the causeway, or out to Belleplain State Forest. If something more serious happens, your host is your second line of support and usually answers quickly, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after every trip. Save the roadside number in your phone before you pick up. Pro tip: the closest 24-hour services and fuel are concentrated around Route 9 in Cape May Court House, about 6 miles west of Stone Harbor.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best RV road trips I can take from Stone Harbor?
An RV road trip from Stone Harbor opens up the entire mid-Atlantic coast. Top routes include: Cape May Historic District and Cape May Point State Park (about 18 miles, 30 minutes south) for Victorian charm and the lighthouse; Wildwood's classic boardwalk and Morey's Piers (8 miles, 15 minutes); Atlantic City and Ocean City beaches (about 40 miles, 50 minutes north); Long Beach Island's Barnegat Lighthouse (60 miles, 90 minutes); and the Pine Barrens at Wharton State Forest (about 60 to 75 miles inland) for a totally different ecosystem. Crossing into Delaware via the Cape May-Lewes Ferry is doable, just confirm RV height and length with the ferry ahead of time. Cross-border trips into Canada can be arranged with host approval.
cmlf.com/How much should I budget for fuel on an RV trip around Stone Harbor?
Fuel is usually the second-biggest line item after the nightly rate, but it's very manageable on a Stone Harbor trip because most of your driving is short hops. Plan on roughly 7 to 9 mpg for a Class A motorhome, 9 to 12 mpg for a Class C, 15 to 18 mpg for a campervan, and 12 to 16 mpg for a truck towing a travel trailer. South Jersey gas prices typically run a bit below the national average, with stations along Route 9 in Cape May Court House and the Garden State Parkway service plazas being the most convenient. For a typical 4-night Stone Harbor RV trip covering 200 to 300 miles, budget $90 to $160 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up off the island before returning to the host.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Stone Harbor?
Book early and you'll have your pick of the best sites. For July and August stays at popular parks like Sun Outdoors Cape May, Avalon Campground, or Seashore Campsites & RV Resort, reserve 4 to 6 months out, sometimes longer for holiday weekends. Belleplain State Forest, the closest state-run option, accepts reservations through New Jersey's official state park reservation system, and hookup sites disappear fast for summer weekends. For shoulder-season trips in May, June, September, or October, 3 to 6 weeks ahead is usually plenty. Pro tip: book your RV on RVezy first so you know the exact length, then filter campground sites that fit, this avoids the classic 'my rig is too long' surprise at check-in.
newjerseystateparks.reserveamerica.com/What's it like driving an RV in and around Stone Harbor?
Driving to Stone Harbor is refreshingly straightforward. The Garden State Parkway runs the length of the Jersey Shore, and exit 10 puts you right onto Stone Harbor Boulevard, a flat causeway with no low bridges or steep grades. The island itself is a tidy grid (roughly 80th through 122nd Streets), easy to navigate, but the downtown stretch of 96th Street gets tight with pedestrians and parked cars in summer, so larger Class A rigs are better left at the campground. Speed limits drop in the borough, generally to 25 mph on residential streets. Summer traffic peaks Friday afternoon and Sunday evening, so plan your arrival for a weekday morning if possible.
state.nj.us/transportation/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Stone Harbor?
You'll find well-equipped campgrounds within a short drive of Stone Harbor. Sun Outdoors Cape May and Avalon Campground both offer full hookups (30/50-amp electric, water, sewer), pools, laundry, camp stores, and Wi-Fi. Belleplain State Forest provides electric and water hookups at many sites, flush toilets, hot showers, and a trailer sanitary dump station. If you need to dump tanks or top off freshwater between sites, the Belleplain sanitary station is a reliable public option in the area. Most private parks near Stone Harbor also offer propane fills on-site. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a basic 30-to-50 amp adapter for maximum flexibility.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/belleplain-state-forest/What's actually inside the RV I'm renting?
You'll get a real home on wheels. Most RVs on RVezy near Stone Harbor come fully stocked with a queen or king bed, a kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink, coffee maker, and basic pots, pans, and utensils, plus a bathroom with toilet and shower. Air conditioning and a furnace are standard, which matters in July humidity and chilly October nights at Stone Harbor Point. Most Class C and travel trailer rentals sleep 4 to 8, with seatbelts for travel passengers in motorized rigs. Many hosts also offer TV, Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor grills, and onboard generators. Each listing spells out exactly what's included, and you can message the host for anything specific like a Pack 'n Play or beach gear.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Stone%20Harbor%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons can I get with my Stone Harbor RV rental, and how does pickup work?
Hosts in the Stone Harbor area offer some genuinely useful add-ons that make a beach trip easier: beach chairs and umbrellas ($5 to $15 a day), bikes (great for the Seven Mile Island flat terrain, $10 to $20 a day), generators ($10 to $25), kitchen and linen packages ($50 to $100 per trip), outdoor grills, kayaks, and even Wi-Fi hotspots. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Cape May County (often Cape May Court House, Marmora, or Rio Grande), with a 30 to 60-minute orientation included. If you'd rather skip the drive, choose Delivery and they'll bring everything to your campground. Pro tip: ask for the beach-tag info, Stone Harbor requires beach tags for ages 12+ from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
stoneharbornj.org/beach-tags/How does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, never directly to the host, which keeps your money protected. A refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup, separate from your booking payment, and is released after your trip once the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid any deposit issues on your Stone Harbor RV trip, do a quick walkaround video at pickup and dropoff, return the rig with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and dump the tanks at your campground or the Belleplain sanitary station before heading home.
