Sussex camping overview
Sussex sits in the northwest corner of New Jersey, in the Kittatinny Mountains of Sussex County, close to the state's highest elevations and the New York state line. RV travelers use it as a base for the surrounding Skylands region, including High Point State Park, Stokes State Forest, and Wawayanda State Park, all within a short drive.
Campground options range from full-hookup private resorts to primitive state forest sites. Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm and Kymers Camping Resort are the main family-oriented RV parks, both with pools and planned activities. Tri-State RV Park serves travelers who want a simpler hookup stay. Stream Mill Area - Stokes State Forest offers tent and small-trailer sites in a forested setting, while Wawayanda State Park adds group sites and lake access.
Elevation matters here. The area sits at roughly 700 to 1,400 feet, which keeps summer nights cooler than the rest of New Jersey and produces real winters with snow, so most private campgrounds and state park sites operate on a seasonal calendar.
Things to do around Sussex
Hiking is the main draw. Wawayanda State Park has over 60 miles of well-marked trails plus a 19.6-mile section of the Appalachian Trail restricted to hiking only. From nearby Stokes State Forest, visitors can drive or hike to Sunset Mountain Scenic Overlook for a view of High Point Monument, the highest elevation in New Jersey, which sits in High Point State Park bordering Stokes to the north.
On the water, boat rentals and a launching ramp sit near the beach at Wawayanda Lake, where canoes, rowboats, and paddleboats are available; only electric motors are permitted. Stokes State Forest is a popular fishing destination, with lakes and streams open under state regulations.
Families staying at Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm can add on-site farm activities including a petting area, hayrides, and a swimming pool. Kymers Camping Resort adds a heated pool, splash pad, mini golf, and stocked-lake kayaking.

The camping season here is short and clearly defined. Private resorts run roughly April through October: Kymers Camping Resort is open from April 1 through October 31, and Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm follows a similar mid-spring to mid-fall calendar. State park group and family sites match this pattern; Wawayanda's group sites are open April 1 to October 31, while Shotwell lean-tos in Stokes State Forest are open year round.
Summer weekends and holidays fill early, so booking well in advance is important for peak dates. Late spring and early fall bring cooler nights, fewer bugs, and easier reservations, and fall foliage in the Kittatinny ridges peaks in October.
Winter is a real winter. Wawayanda stands at 1,140 feet above sea level, receives substantial snow accumulation, and is used for cross-country skiing, ice fishing, snowshoeing, and snowmobiling. Most RV amenities, including water hookups and dump stations, are shut down during freezing months.

Absolutely amazing renter. The RV had everything we needed and they were very accommodating with our extension.

I accept the charges as followed. However I do not accept charge for 4 days. I only had the vehicle for 3 days. I'd like to dispute the 4th day charged for 250.00

How to book a campsite near Sussex
State park and forest sites use one central system. Online reservations for Wawayanda State Park can be made at camping.nj.gov, and reservations for Stream Mill Area - Stokes State Forest go through the same New Jersey State Park Service reservation system. Choose the specific campground area at booking, since Stokes has multiple loops with different rules. Only family sites 101 to 137 are pet friendly at Stokes State Forest, so reserve these in advance when bringing pets. There is a two-night minimum to reserve or occupy lean-tos, and reservations must be made in advance.
Private resorts book directly. Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm and Kymers Camping Resort both take reservations by phone or through their websites, and both accept holiday-weekend bookings months out. Tri-State RV Park is a smaller operation, so calling ahead is the most reliable option.
What to expect at Sussex-area campgrounds
Expect a mix of full-hookup and primitive sites. Kymers Camping Resort offers water, 30 and 50 amp electric, sewer at many sites, laundry, showers, and Wi-Fi, with cabin and park model rentals for guests without gear. Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm operates as an RV resort with similar amenities. State forest sites are the opposite: Stream Mill has 27 campsites with an artesian well, pit toilet, picnic tables, and fire rings, and sanitary stations are a distance away.
Terrain is rocky and hilly. Most sites include picnic tables, fire rings, and lantern hooks, though the rocky terrain means level tent spots require some searching. At Wawayanda, water is not available at campsites and must be carried from the main office building, and there are no shower facilities.
Cell service is inconsistent in the state forests, black bears are active, and firewood should be bought locally to avoid moving pests.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Sussex, NJ
How much does an RV rental in Sussex, NJ typically cost?
Renting an RV in Sussex is often more affordable than booking hotels across the Skylands region. On RVezy, travel trailers in the Sussex area typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from about $175 to $275, and larger Class A motorhomes generally run $250 to $400 per night. Because RVezy is a peer-to-peer marketplace, owners set their own pricing, so you can filter by budget and message hosts directly with questions. For a cheap RV rental in Sussex, book midweek stays in May or September to avoid the August Sussex County Fair surge and secure the best rates of the season.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sussex,%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Sussex, NJ?
Good news: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Sussex, NJ. New Jersey explicitly exempts personal-use motorhomes from CDL requirements, so even a large Class A used for your family vacation can be driven on a standard Class D license. You'll just need to be 25 or older with a valid driver's license, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto club before your trip. That's it: no CDL, no endorsements, no surprises before you point your motorhome rental toward High Point State Park.
nj.gov/mvc/license/idtypes.htmWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Sussex, NJ?
Every RVezy booking in Sussex comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built in, so you can focus on the Kittatinny Mountains instead of worst-case scenarios. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV during your trip, giving you significant financial peace of mind. You will choose your coverage level during checkout based on how much extra protection you want, and the host does not select this for you. Pro tip: take photos during your pickup walkthrough. That simple habit, plus the included roadside coverage, helps first-time renters in Sussex feel confident from day one.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Sussex, NJ trip plans change?
Booking an RV rental in Sussex is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not the host. That means you get a consistent experience whether you are renting a campervan in Vernon or a fifth wheel in Wantage. There is a grace period after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund, and additional flexibility may apply in cases like natural disasters, which matters in a region that occasionally sees nor'easters or summer thunderstorms rolling over the Kittatinny Ridge. Reach out to RVezy support if something unexpected happens, and book with confidence knowing you are not locked in the moment you click Reserve.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from Sussex, NJ?
Absolutely: a pet-friendly RV rental in Sussex is one of the easiest ways to travel with your dog in northern New Jersey. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see listings where furry passengers are welcome, and message the host about any pet fee or breed notes before booking. Once you are on the road, Sussex County is a dog-lover's paradise: leashed dogs are allowed on most trails at High Point State Park and Stokes State Forest, and several private campgrounds in the area welcome pets at designated sites. Pack a leash, vaccination records, and a towel for muddy paws after the Appalachian Trail.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/high-point-state-park/Can the RV be delivered to my campground in Sussex, NJ?
Yes, RV delivery in Sussex, NJ is one of the most popular options for first-timers, and many hosts will drive the rig right to your campsite. Look for the Delivery filter on RVezy to see hosts who offer drop-off to places like Pleasant Acres Farm Campground, Harmony Ridge Campground in Branchville, or Sawmill Lake Campground inside High Point State Park. The host will park the RV, level it, hook up water and electric, walk you through every system, and pick it up at the end of your stay. Delivery fees vary by distance, but for nervous first-time renters this is honestly the smartest money you'll spend.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-forest/stokes-state-forest/How far can I drive on a Sussex, NJ RV rental, and what about mileage limits?
You have plenty of road ahead of you. Most Sussex hosts include a daily mileage allowance (often 100 to 150 miles per day), and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage as an upgrade. The good news is Sussex County sits in the middle of an incredible cluster of weekend destinations: the Delaware Water Gap is about 35 miles south, the Catskills are roughly 60 miles north, Philadelphia is 110 miles, and Manhattan is around 55 miles southeast. Check each listing's mileage policy before booking, and if you are planning a bigger loop, message the host to pre-purchase additional miles at a discounted rate.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Sussex,%20New%20JerseyWhat are the best campgrounds near Sussex, NJ for RV camping?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Sussex. Top picks include Pleasant Acres Farm Campground on Dewitt Road, a family-friendly working-farm campground with full hookups and a petting zoo; Harmony Ridge Campground in Branchville, set on a wooded property in the Kittatinny Mountains; and Sawmill Lake Campground inside High Point State Park, which is typically open spring through fall with affordable rates for New Jersey residents and out-of-state guests. Book weekends months ahead, as Harmony Ridge and Pleasant Acres fill up fast for summer and fall foliage season.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/high-point-state-park/When is the best time to rent an RV in Sussex, NJ?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for any Sussex NJ RV trip, with September and early October being the local insider favorite for crisp 60 to 70°F days and absolutely jaw-dropping foliage along the Kittatinny Ridge. Summer (June through August) brings warm 76 to 83°F highs, lake swims at Lake Marcia, and the famous New Jersey State Fair / Sussex County Farm and Horse Show in early August. Spring is wet but green, and winter dips to lows around 18 to 20°F with real snow, so most state-park campgrounds close after October 31. Book your fall weekend by July if you want a lakeside site.
weather.gov/phi/I've never driven an RV before. Is renting one in Sussex, NJ doable for a first-timer?
Yes, first time renting an RV in Sussex, NJ is genuinely easier than you think. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through how to use the slide-outs, water, propane, generator, and dump valves so you're not Googling things at the campground. Sussex County roads are forgiving for beginners: Route 23 and Route 206 are wide two-lane highways with gentle grades, and most local campgrounds are well-signed and easy to pull into. If you're still nervous, choose a Class C motorhome rental in Sussex (drives like a big van) or have the host deliver and set up the RV for you. You've got this.
nj.gov/mvc/license/newdrivers.htmWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You are never alone on the road. Every Sussex RV rental booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 23 or a dead battery at Stokes State Forest is just a phone call away from being handled. Your host is also reachable by message for quick questions like why the fridge is blinking, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after your trip. For real emergencies, dial 911. Newton Medical Center in Newton, NJ is the closest full-service hospital to most Sussex County campgrounds.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat are the best road trip destinations from Sussex, NJ?
An RV road trip from Sussex puts three states and several iconic destinations within an easy day's drive. Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is about 35 miles south for waterfalls and the Appalachian Trail; the Catskills in New York are roughly 60 miles north for hiking and craft breweries; the Pocono Mountains are around 50 miles west in Pennsylvania for whitewater rafting; and the Jersey Shore from Asbury Park to Cape May is 90 to 150 miles southeast. Some hosts allow travel into Canada (always confirm in the listing before booking), but Mexico travel is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Cross-border trips into PA and NY are straightforward and common.
nps.gov/dewa/index.htmHow much should I budget for fuel on a Sussex, NJ RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost, but it's easy to estimate. In early 2026, New Jersey regular gas averages around $3.50 to $3.80 per gallon, and Class C motorhomes typically get 8 to 10 miles per gallon while travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle. For a 3-day weekend doing 300 miles around Sussex County (say, Sussex Borough to Stokes State Forest to the Delaware Water Gap and back), budget roughly $115 to $145 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Sussex Borough or along Route 23 before heading into High Point State Park, because stations get scarce once you climb the ridge. Sunoco stations on the NJ Turnpike are surveyed multiple times weekly.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campsite near Sussex, NJ?
For the best campgrounds near Sussex, NJ, book sooner rather than later, especially for weekends. State-park sites at Sawmill Lake Campground in High Point State Park are reserved through the official New Jersey camping portal at camping.nj.gov, and weekend and holiday sites can fill months in advance, particularly during October foliage. Private campgrounds like Harmony Ridge, Pleasant Acres Farm, and Woodland Trails accept reservations directly on their websites and typically open booking 6 to 12 months ahead. As a rule of thumb: book summer weekends by March, fall foliage weekends by June, and weekday stays can often be grabbed just a week or two out for spontaneous trips.
camping.nj.gov/What are the local driving conditions like around Sussex, NJ?
Driving an RV around Sussex, NJ is refreshingly relaxed compared to driving one through North Jersey traffic. Route 23, Route 206, and Route 94 are the main arteries: wide, well-paved, and built for trucks and RVs, with gentle grades up to the 1,803-foot summit at High Point. Avoid the Holland Tunnel, Lincoln Tunnel, the lower level of the George Washington Bridge, and the GWB Expressway, where propane (LP gas) is prohibited. The Garden State Parkway caps combined RV length at 62 feet. In winter, the Kittatinny Mountains can get real snow and ice, so plan for shoulder-season weather if you're traveling in late October or April.
state.nj.us/transportation/What amenities will I find at campgrounds in the Sussex, NJ area?
Sussex County campgrounds run the full spectrum from full-hookup luxury to rustic state-park bliss. Private parks like Pleasant Acres Farm, Harmony Ridge, and Woodland Trails offer 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, cable hookups, dump stations, swimming pools, laundry, camp stores, and Wi-Fi at many sites. State-park options like Sawmill Lake at High Point are more rustic: pit toilets that flush, fire rings, picnic tables, and drinking water in season, with showers available at the Lake Marcia bathhouse from Memorial Day through Labor Day. You can dump tanks at most private campgrounds and at the High Point park dump station. Always store food in your RV or a vehicle, because black bears live here.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/state-park/high-point-state-park/What's included inside a typical RV rental in Sussex, NJ?
You're getting a fully equipped home on wheels. Most Sussex, NJ RV rentals come with comfortable sleeping for 4 to 8 people, a full kitchen (fridge, stovetop, microwave, sink, basic cookware), a bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control, dining table, and seatbelted seats for travel. Class C motorhomes and travel trailers usually include a TV and sometimes a generator for off-grid power, while campervan rentals in Sussex are more streamlined for couples. Wi-Fi varies by host (cell service is spotty up at High Point, so don't count on streaming). Each listing on RVezy spells out exactly what's included, so you can compare before you book.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/393.93What add-ons and pickup options are common for Sussex, NJ RV rentals?
Sussex hosts make trip planning easy with smart add-ons. Popular extras include camping chairs, outdoor grills, bike racks, generators, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, kids' seats, and pet packages, typically $10 to $50 each. Many hosts also offer RV delivery in Sussex, NJ to your campground for a flat fee based on mileage, plus optional dump/refill service so you don't deal with the gray-water tank at the end of your trip. Pickup is usually right at the host's home in Sussex Borough, Wantage, Vernon, or Branchville, with a 45 to 60-minute walkthrough included. Message the host before booking to confirm pickup times and which add-ons fit your trip.
dep.nj.gov/parksandforests/How does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Sussex, NJ?
Payment is simple and secure through RVezy: you pay online with a credit card when you book, and the platform holds your reservation until the trip begins. A refundable security deposit (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) is handled separately from your booking payment and is released after the host confirms the RV was returned in good shape. To avoid any deposit issues, do a thorough walkthrough with photos at pickup, follow the mileage and generator-hour policy in your listing, and return the RV with the same fuel and propane levels. Easy as that.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I take an RV out in winter near Sussex, NJ?
Yes, winter RVing near Sussex is doable and underrated. While most state-park campgrounds close at the end of October, several private campgrounds in Sussex County stay open year-round, and the Kittatinny Mountains become a snowy playground with cross-country skiing, snowshoeing at High Point State Park, and Mountain Creek Resort about 20 minutes away in Vernon for downhill skiing. January lows around 18 to 20°F mean you will want a four-season RV with heated holding tanks, shore power for the furnace, and good insulation. Filter for winter-capable listings on RVezy and message the host to confirm the rig is winterized before you book.
