Campgrounds near Tenafly, New Jersey
Tenafly sits in Bergen County along the Palisades, roughly 10 miles from Manhattan and within a short drive of several parks that accept RVs and tents. The area works well as a base for travelers who want quick access to New York City while still reaching real woodland camping in the New Jersey Highlands and lower Hudson Valley.
The closest full-hookup option is Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City, which caters to travelers using the RV as a city basecamp. For traditional campgrounds, Beaver Pond Campground - Harriman State Park is the nearest large public option, about an hour north across the New York line. Floyd Bennett Field - Gateway National Recreational Area sits within Gateway National Recreation Area on Jamaica Bay in Brooklyn.
For rustic trips deeper into the Highlands, Camp Wyanokie and Wawayanda State Park offer wooded sites and trail access in northern New Jersey. Together the five options span urban hookups, developed state-park loops, and primitive backcountry, so the right choice depends on hookup needs, trip length, and how much driving fits the itinerary.
Things to do near Tenafly
Day trips from Tenafly cover a wide range. Hikers can reach the Palisades Interstate Park cliff trails within minutes, and the Appalachian Trail crosses through Harriman and Wawayanda State Parks to the north and west. Swimming, paddling, and fishing are available at Wawayanda Lake and at several lakes inside Harriman, including Lake Welch adjacent to Beaver Pond Campground - Harriman State Park.
Floyd Bennett Field - Gateway National Recreational Area has hiking trails, historic aircraft in Hangar B, and the William Fitts Ryan Visitor Center, along with grasslands, saltmarshes, and a kayak launch. The adjacent Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge draws birdwatchers during spring and fall migrations.
From Liberty Harbor RV Park, ferries and PATH trains reach Lower Manhattan in minutes, making it practical to combine camping with museum days, ballgames, and Statue of Liberty visits.

Camping season in the region runs primarily from spring through fall. New Jersey state park campgrounds, including Wawayanda State Park, typically open in April and close in late October, and Beaver Pond Campground - Harriman State Park operates on a similar April through October window under New York State Parks.
Summer is peak season. Weekends at Beaver Pond, Wawayanda, and Floyd Bennett Field book out well in advance for July and August, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day are the first to fill. Late spring and September deliver cooler nights, thinner crowds, and better site selection, and fall foliage in Harriman and the New Jersey Highlands typically peaks in mid to late October.
Winter camping is limited. Most state park loops close, water is shut off at seasonal sites, and rustic sites like Camp Wyanokie become snow-dependent. Liberty Harbor RV Park operates through the winter for travelers who need urban hookups.

How to book campgrounds near Tenafly
Reservation systems vary by park. Beaver Pond Campground - Harriman State Park is booked through the New York State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica, with a nine-month rolling window and same-day reservations allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival. Wawayanda State Park uses the New Jersey State Park Service reservation portal at camping.nj.gov, which opens campsites up to eleven months in advance.
Floyd Bennett Field - Gateway National Recreational Area can be booked up to six months in advance on Recreation.gov, subject to the current concessioner operating schedule.
Liberty Harbor RV Park is booked directly with the property and often requires reservations weeks ahead in warmer months due to limited urban capacity. Camp Wyanokie is managed by local scouting and outdoor groups and requires advance arrangement rather than walk-in booking.
What to expect at Tenafly-area campgrounds
Expect a mix of urban and rustic experiences within a short radius. Liberty Harbor RV Park is a paved, marina-adjacent lot with full hookups and city noise, not a nature setting. Beaver Pond Campground - Harriman State Park is a traditional wooded state-park campground with shared full-service bathrooms and sites that can fit trailers or RVs up to 30 feet, though there are no electrical hookups. Wawayanda State Park offers tent and small-trailer sites with basic facilities.
At Floyd Bennett Field - Gateway National Recreational Area, campers have access to a restroom and shower next to the camp store, with a chemical toilet available after hours, and the camp store sells firewood and basic supplies.
Camp Wyanokie is primitive, hike-in tenting with no vehicle access to sites, not suitable for RVs. Cell service is generally strong near Tenafly and Jersey City and spotty inside Harriman and Wawayanda.

These plans cover qualifying physical damage to the vehicle, so you're not on the hook if something unexpected happens on the way to Harriman State Park or the Jersey Shore. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Tenafly RV rental?
Booking is low-risk. RVezy sets the cancellation policy across the platform (not individual hosts), and there's a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in your dates with confidence. After that, your refund depends on how far out from your trip you cancel, and RVezy has specific protections for situations like host cancellations or major travel disruptions. You can review the full details on the RVezy Help Center before confirming. Pro tip: if your Tenafly RV trip is months away, book early to secure the rig you want at a better price; the cancellation grace period gives you time to lock plans in without overcommitting.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Tenafly RV trip?
Yes, plenty of pet-friendly RV rental Tenafly options are ready for your four-legged co-pilot. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) in their rigs. Some charge a small pet fee, which is shown right on the listing. For local adventures, the Tenafly Nature Center's roughly 400 acres of trails welcome leashed dogs, and nearby Overpeck County Park has a popular off-leash dog area. Heads-up for planning: pet rules vary by New York and New Jersey state park campground, so for overnight stays confirm pet policies at places like Worthington State Forest or KOA properties before booking. Message your host before booking to confirm pet rules and any cleaning expectations.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Tenafly%2C%20New%20Jersey&PetFriendly=trueCan the RV be delivered to me in Tenafly?
Absolutely, RV delivery Tenafly is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a 30-foot rig through Bergen County traffic. Many Tenafly-area hosts will deliver and set up the RV at your campground, your driveway, or a nearby destination like Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City or Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park. Delivery fees usually depend on distance, with most local drop-offs running $2 to $5 per mile from the host's location. Use the Delivery filter on RVezy to find hosts who offer this. Pro tip: ask for delivery if you want a stress-free start; the host will walk you through every system on site so you're confident before they leave.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Tenafly%2C%20New%20Jersey&Delivery=trueHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive from Tenafly?
Mileage is flexible and easy to plan for. Each Tenafly RV listing shows the host's daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day) plus the overage rate, usually around $0.30 to $0.45 per mile. Some hosts offer an RV rental with unlimited mileage package, which is perfect for longer trips. From Tenafly you can reach Harriman State Park in about 45 minutes (25 miles), the Delaware Water Gap in about 90 minutes (75 miles), Cape May on the Jersey Shore in roughly 3 hours (160 miles), and the Poconos in under 2 hours (90 miles). Pro tip: estimate your route in advance and buy a mileage add-on upfront if needed; it's almost always cheaper than the per-mile overage.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Tenafly%2C%20New%20JerseyWhere can I camp with an RV near Tenafly?
You've got great options within an easy drive. The closest is Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City (about 20 minutes south), a full-hookup RV park near NYC with ferry access into Manhattan. About 45 minutes north, Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park sits near Lake Welch and fits RVs up to 30 feet (no electric hookups, no pets). For more developed camping, Camp Taylor Campground in Columbia (about 75 minutes west) and Worthington State Forest along the Delaware Water Gap are local favorites. Pro tip for RV camping Tenafly weekends: reserve Harriman sites as soon as the booking window opens through ReserveAmerica, especially for summer Fridays and fall foliage weekends.
parks.ny.gov/parks/harrimanWhen is the best time to rent an RV in Tenafly?
Late April through October is the sweet spot for a Tenafly RV trip, with October arguably the most scenic thanks to Hudson Valley fall foliage. Spring (mid-April to June) brings 60 to 75 degree days, perfect for hiking the Palisades. Summer (July and August) is warm and humid, with highs in the mid-80s and occasional thunderstorms; book early because Jersey Shore and Harriman fill up fast. September and October cool to the 50s and 70s with brilliant leaf color. Winter is chilly (20s to 40s) but campervans with proper heating make for cozy ski trips to the Catskills. Local insider tip: book the last weekend of September or first weekend of October for peak foliage with smaller crowds than Columbus Day weekend.
weather.gov/okx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You'll be in great hands. First time renting an RV is easier than people think, especially in the Tenafly area where most hosts cater heavily to NYC-region beginners. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through the generator, water systems, slide-outs, leveling, and dump procedures. You can message your host with questions before booking, during the trip, or any time you need a refresher. RVezy's 24/7 customer support and roadside assistance are one tap away if you hit a snag. Pro tip for confidence: choose a Class C motorhome or campervan rental Tenafly hosts offer, which drive much like a large van, and ask the host to deliver and set up so your first day is pure vacation.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002344853-RentersWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're never on your own. Every Tenafly RV rental comes with 24/7 roadside assistance included in the booking, so flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and tow services are just a phone call away whether you're stuck on the Palisades Parkway, the Garden State Parkway, or somewhere in the Catskills. RVezy customer support is also available around the clock to help troubleshoot or coordinate with your host. Most hosts share their cell number at pickup and respond quickly to questions, especially for quirks specific to their rig. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you pull out of the driveway, and snap a quick photo of the RV's tag axle and tire size, it speeds up service if you need a tire swap on I-80 or the New York State Thruway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityCan I take my Tenafly RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Absolutely, interstate travel is one of the best parts of an RV road trip from Tenafly. Most hosts welcome trips throughout the Northeast, so you can roll into New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, and beyond without issue. For Canada (a popular Montreal or Quebec City run from Tenafly, about 6 to 7 hours north), confirm with your host before booking since insurance coverage needs to be verified. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals as it falls outside insurance coverage. Pro tip: popular RV road trip from Tenafly routes include the Adirondacks loop (5 days), Acadia National Park (4 to 6 days), and the Blue Ridge Parkway (a week or more). Message your host with your itinerary and they'll usually green-light it on the spot.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of gas mileage should I expect, and what does fuel cost?
Plan smart and fuel won't blow your budget. Class C motorhomes around Tenafly typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (mpg), Class A rigs 6 to 10 mpg, campervans 16 to 22 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 15 mpg combined). New Jersey gas prices tend to track close to the national average, and remember New Jersey is a full-service state, so an attendant pumps your gas. Diesel rigs typically add about $0.50 per gallon over regular. Pro tip: top up in New Jersey before crossing into New York or Pennsylvania, where prices and taxes are often higher, and use a fuel-price app to find cheaper stations along Route 17 or the Turnpike.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book campgrounds near Tenafly?
For the best campgrounds near Tenafly, earlier is definitely better. Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park opens reservations through ReserveAmerica up to 9 months in advance, and prime summer weekends (especially July 4th and Labor Day) can book up within minutes of the window opening. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City fills up fast for fall and major NYC event weekends, so book 2 to 3 months out. Private parks in the Poconos and Catskills usually have more flexibility but still fill 4 to 6 weeks ahead in peak season. Pro tip: set a calendar alert for the 9-month mark on ReserveAmerica and have your dates, vehicle length (max 30 feet at Beaver Pond), and payment ready to go.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What's it like driving an RV around Tenafly and the NYC metro?
Totally doable with a little planning. Tenafly itself is a quiet Bergen County suburb with wide residential streets, so pickup and drop-off are easy. The trick is knowing where not to drive: avoid the Henry Hudson Parkway, Saw Mill River Parkway, and most NYC parkways, which ban commercial and recreational vehicles due to low bridge clearances (some under 8 feet). Stick to I-95, I-80, the New Jersey Turnpike, and the Palisades Interstate Parkway (confirm RV restrictions before you go). The George Washington Bridge upper level offers about 14 feet of clearance, no problem for most rigs. Pro tip: you're only 45 minutes from Harriman State Park's hiking and 90 minutes from the Delaware Water Gap, so you can escape the metro fast. If city driving makes you nervous, ask your host about RV delivery Tenafly so you skip it entirely.
njdot.gov/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Tenafly?
Local campgrounds offer a good range depending on your style. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City has 30 and 50 amp electric, water hookups, hot showers, laundry, a dump station, and pet-friendly leash policies. Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park is more primitive with shared comfort stations, showers, and a central dump station, but no electric or water at individual sites. Worthington State Forest and Camp Taylor offer water, electric, and dump access at many sites. Pro tip: fill your fresh tank before leaving Tenafly and plan one dump stop on the way home to avoid extra fees at your home base.
parks.ny.gov/parks/harrimanWhat's inside a typical Tenafly RV rental?
More creature comforts than you might expect. A typical motorhome rental Tenafly listing includes a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds (most sleep 4 to 7), a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and a generator or solar setup for off-grid use. WiFi varies; some hosts include mobile hotspots, others recommend you bring your own. Campervans are more compact but still pack a bed, kitchenette, and often a wet bath. Pro tip: check the listing's amenities list and message the host to confirm bedding, cookware, and seatbelt count match your group size, especially for a family RV trip Tenafly families take to the shore or Poconos.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Tenafly%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons can I get, and how do pickup and dropoff work?
Hosts on RVezy offer a great range of add-ons to make your trip easier. Popular ones for Tenafly rentals include linens and towel kits ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, generators, propane refills, bike racks, camp chairs, extra mileage packages, and even pre-stocked grocery setups. Most hosts have a flexible 1 to 3 hour pickup window so you can plan around NYC-area traffic, with a full walkthrough of every system before you drive off. Drop-off is usually the same: arrive on time, top off fuel and propane (or pay the host's refill fee), and do a quick inspection. Pro tip: ask your host about late pickup or early drop-off, many Bergen County hosts are flexible if their next booking allows, and a delivery add-on can save you the trouble entirely.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002344853-RentersHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure through the RVezy platform. You'll pay your rental total, taxes, and selected add-ons at booking via credit or debit card, no cash ever changes hands with the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) shortly before your trip starts, and it's released back to your card after drop-off assuming no damage, missing items, or policy violations. Choosing a higher protection plan tier can reduce your out-of-pocket exposure if something does happen. Pro tip: do a thorough video walkthrough with your Tenafly host at pickup AND drop-off, documenting tire condition, exterior dings, and interior cleanliness. It's the single best way to make sure your deposit comes back fast and in full.
