Campgrounds and RV parks near The Hills, NJ

Water recreation centers on Spruce Run Reservoir, which covers 1,290 acres with 15 miles of shoreline for boating, fishing, and paddling. Anglers target largemouth bass, catfish, yellow perch, carp, and stocked trout, and boat launches accommodate both cartop and trailered watercraft. The Musconetcong River at Stephens State Park is stocked with brown, rainbow, and brook trout each spring and is a popular fly-fishing destination. Hiking and biking are strong across the area. Voorhees State Park has multi-use trails winding through wooded terrain, plus a fitness parcourse and views toward Round Valley and Spruce Run reservoirs. The Highlands Trail passes through both Spruce Run and Stephens. Visitors at Voorhees can also visit the New Jersey Astronomical Association observatory, home to a 26-inch reflector telescope with year-round public sky-watching programs.

State-park campgrounds in this region operate on a fixed season. Voorhees State Park, Spruce Run Recreation Area, and Stephens State Park all open family campsites, shelters, and group sites from April 1 through October 31, with the trailer sanitary dump station at Spruce Run following the same window. Reservations outside those dates are not accepted at the state facilities. Spring brings trout stocking on the Musconetcong River and mild hiking weather, though nights can still drop near freezing in April. Summer is peak season: reservoir boating, fishing, and family camping fill weekends quickly. Note that the Spruce Run swim area has been closed due to harmful algal blooms, so check the park advisory before planning a beach visit. Ticks and mosquitoes are active from late spring through early fall. Fall delivers foliage across the Hunterdon and Warren County hills through October, then most public campsites close at the end of the month. Winter access shifts to day use, with ice fishing and cross-country skiing when conditions allow. Fla-Net Park operates roughly April 1 through mid-October.

Sites at Voorhees and Stephens are wooded and geared toward tents or smaller trailers; access roads are narrow, and larger Class A rigs will find them tight. Both parks provide fire rings, picnic tables, flush toilets, and showers within walking distance. Pets and alcoholic beverages are prohibited in the campgrounds at Voorhees, Spruce Run, and Stephens. Spruce Run has a lakeside campground with a sanitary dump station and seven trailer hookup sites. Fla-Net Park is a more traditional private RV park with full hookups, a pool, laundry, and a playground, set on flatter terrain near I-80 and local shopping. Quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. at the state parks. Firewood is not supplied at overnight sites but can be purchased at the Spruce Run park office; buy locally to avoid moving pests. Bear-aware food storage is required across the region.
