Campgrounds and RV parks near Towaco, NJ

The surrounding Highlands region is built for hiking, paddling, and fishing. Wawayanda State Park offers over 60 miles of trails, including a stretch of the Appalachian Trail, plus a lifeguarded swimming beach from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, kayak rentals, and cold-water fishing on Wawayanda Lake, where landlocked salmon were introduced in 2006 and only a handful of deep New Jersey lakes have suitable year-round habitat for cold-water fish such as trout and salmon. Camp Wyanokie provides access to rugged trails in Norvin Green State Forest, including popular summit hikes with skyline views. Families staying at Panther Lake Camping Resort typically use the on-site lake, pool, and planned activities as a home base for day trips. From Liberty Harbor RV Park, travelers can walk to the PATH or ferry for direct access to Lower Manhattan, the Statue of Liberty, and Liberty State Park.

Camping season in northern New Jersey is concentrated between spring and fall. State-run campgrounds follow a strict operating window: Wawayanda State Park camping is open April 1 to October 31. Private resorts such as Panther Lake typically open earlier and close later, and Liberty Harbor RV Park operates year-round. Late spring brings leaf-out, moderate temperatures, and lower bug pressure before Memorial Day. Summer is the busiest stretch, with warm humid days, afternoon thunderstorms, and peak demand on weekends and holidays. Reservations for July and August weekends should be locked in weeks ahead. Fall delivers the region's strongest color, usually peaking mid to late October in the Highlands, with cool nights that suit RV travel. Winter camping is limited to a few private parks; state park campsites, water systems, and many amenities close for the season.

Facilities vary widely by property. State park sites tend to be rustic: at Wawayanda's group sites, water is not available at campsites and must be carried from the main office building, and there are no shower facilities. Camp Wyanokie is similarly primitive, geared to tent and small-rig users comfortable without hookups. Per state policy, water, electric and sewer hook-ups are not provided at NJ state park campsites except at select sites at Spruce Run Recreation Area. Private resorts such as Panther Lake Camping Resort offer full hookups, laundry, and family amenities suited to larger RVs. Liberty Harbor RV Park is an urban paved lot with hookups and transit access rather than a wooded setting. Terrain in the Highlands is hilly and roads can be narrow, so drivers of longer rigs should confirm site length and access before booking. Black bears are active across the region, and food storage rules are enforced at public campgrounds.
