Campgrounds near Trenton
Trenton sits at the center of a camping region that blends Revolutionary War history along the Delaware River with the pine forests of central and southern New Jersey. RV renters have access to a mix of state-run parks and private resorts within a short drive of the capital, ranging from full-hookup RV parks to rustic tent-and-trailer loops inside protected pinelands.
Washington Crossing State Park sits along the Delaware River about eight miles north of Trenton and centers on Revolutionary War history, though its group campsites have been closed until further notice. For full RV amenities, most renters head east or south to private resorts such as Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort, Timberland Lake Campground, and Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground, all within about an hour of Trenton near Jackson and Cream Ridge.
For a quieter, forested experience, Brendan T Byrne State Forest offers tent and trailer sites inside the Pine Barrens, a short drive southeast of the city.
Things to do near Trenton
The Delaware River corridor around Washington Crossing State Park is the marquee draw for history-minded families, with walking paths, river access for paddling and fishing, and a visitor center museum featuring the Swan Historical Foundation collection of over 500 artifacts from the American Revolution. Downtown Trenton adds the New Jersey State Museum, Old Barracks, and the Statehouse for rainy-day plans.
Families staying at Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground are about 20 miles from Seaside Heights, Belmar, or Point Pleasant beaches and minutes from Six Flags Great Adventure. At Brendan T Byrne State Forest, roughly 25 miles of marked trails, Pakim Pond, and the historic cranberry village of Whitesbog offer hiking, biking, fishing, and nature-center programming.

Peak camping season around Trenton runs from late April through mid-October. Summer brings warm, humid days ideal for pool time and shore trips, but it is also the busiest window: sites at private RV parks near Six Flags and the shore fill weeks ahead for weekends and holidays. At Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground, the pool is open daily from Memorial Day Friday through Labor Day.
Spring and fall are the sweet spot for state-forest camping. Brendan T Byrne State Forest draws hikers to the Pine Barrens trail network for fall foliage, and bug pressure eases after the first cool nights, making midweek reservations easier to secure.
Winter camping is limited. Most state park campgrounds are closed during the coldest months, and while Indian Rock is open year round with limited winter facilities and amenities, services are reduced compared with the main season.

We had a great experience with RV Cozy Camper. The camper truly lived up to its name — it was clean, comfortable, and well maintained, making our trip relaxing and enjoyable. Everything we needed was thoughtfully provided, and the layout made the space feel welcoming and functional. It was easy to tow and set up, which helped take a lot of stress out of the trip. The attention to detail really showed and made us feel comfortable right away. Communication was smooth and helpful, and any questions we had were answered promptly. Overall, this was a wonderful experience, and we would absolutely recommend RV Cozy Camper to anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable camping option. We would happily use RV Cozy Camper again for future trips!

We had a family reunion out in West Virginia the first week in August. We decided to rent an RV this how I found Rod the owner of the RV. He was very polite and up front we us the whole time. The only down fall is the no pet rule. But we definitely rent from him next year.

We had a blast on our family road trip. "Archie" was easy to drive, clean and comfortable for my family of 3, with room to spare. Rod is a really nice guy and responded quickly to any question we had. We would love to do it again soon

How to book a campsite
New Jersey State Park Service sites, including Brendan T Byrne State Forest and Washington Crossing State Park, are reserved through the state's online portal at camping.nj.gov. Reservations can be made anywhere from 2 days to a year in advance of a trip and require a minimum of a two-night stay, with a maximum stay of 14 days. Check current status before booking, as Washington Crossing campgrounds are closed until further notice.
Private resorts such as Crystal Springs Wilderness Lodges and RV Resort, Timberland Lake Campground, and Indian Rock RV Resort and Campground take reservations directly. Reservations are required at Indian Rock RV Park and Campground, and holiday weekends near Six Flags book out early, so lock in dates as far ahead as possible.
What to expect on-site
Expect a clear split between state and private facilities. Brendan T Byrne offers eighty-two tent and trailer sites, each with fire rings, picnic tables and lantern hooks, with flush toilets and showers on-site, but only ten of the sites are suitable for RVs and trailers and hookups are minimal. Washington Crossing's group sites are primitive campsites with no water or electric utilities available on site when open.
Private parks near Cream Ridge and Jackson are set up for RVs. Indian Rock offers spacious sites at about 35 by 50 feet with water and 30 and/or 50 amp electric, and sewer at most sites, plus a seasonal pool. Roads through Pine Barrens campgrounds are often sandy, so plan for slower maneuvering with larger rigs.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Trenton, NJ?
RV rental in Trenton is a budget-friendly way to explore the Northeast compared to flights and hotels. On RVezy, pop-up campers and small travel trailers typically start around $75 to $125 per night, Class C motorhomes range from about $175 to $275, and larger Class A motorhomes generally start near $300 per night. Your total depends on dates, mileage, and add-ons like generators or kitchen kits. Use the Instant Book filter and flexible dates on RVezy to compare nightly rates from local hosts in the Mercer County area.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Trenton%2C%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Trenton?
No special license is required to rent an RV in Trenton for personal use. New Jersey allows you to drive a standard motorhome or campervan with your regular Class D driver's license, whether you choose a compact campervan or a 30-foot Class C motorhome. On RVezy, every approved driver must be at least 25 years old with a valid license, and identity is verified securely through the platform during booking. International visitors should bring an International Driving Permit along with their home-country license. There is no CDL, road test, or DMV visit required before your Trenton RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included with my Trenton RV rental?
Every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head out on the New Jersey Turnpike or I-295 with confidence. Renters choose a protection level (Basic, Standard, or Premium) during checkout, which sets your coverage limits and out-of-pocket responsibility if damage occurs during your trip. The plan is designed specifically for peer-to-peer RV rental in New Jersey and is built into the RVezy booking flow with clear, transparent terms. If it's your first time renting an RV, upgrading to a higher protection tier is usually only a few dollars more per night and significantly lowers your potential exposure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Trenton RV rental?
RVezy, not the host, sets the cancellation policy, which includes a full-refund grace period right after you book. After that window, refunds depend on how far in advance you cancel and whether extenuating circumstances apply, such as severe weather during the Atlantic hurricane season from June through November. The exact terms are shown during checkout before you pay, so there are no surprises. If a nor'easter or tropical storm threatens your trip dates, contact RVezy support and the team will help you review your options. Booking early helps you lock in the best RVs for Princeton-area events or Jersey Shore weekends, while the grace period still gives you flexibility soon after booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Trenton?
Yes, Trenton is a great launchpad for a dog-friendly RV road trip. Many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Trenton; just apply the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see eligible listings. Once you're rolling, your dog will enjoy Mercer County Park's off-leash dog park, the towpath at Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park, and the trails at Washington Crossing State Park, all within about 20 minutes of downtown. For longer trips, leashed dogs are welcome on many trails at High Point State Park, and Cape May allows dogs on its beaches in the off-season. Message the host before booking to confirm pet fees and any breed or size restrictions so check-in is smooth.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/pets.htmlCan the RV be delivered to me in Trenton?
Yes, RV delivery in Trenton is one of the easiest ways to start your trip, especially if you'd rather not drive a large rig through the Route 1 corridor or in and out of a tight Hamilton Township driveway. Many RVezy hosts deliver to your home, hotel, or campground, set up the rig with hookups and slide-outs, walk you through every system, and pick it up at the end of your trip. Popular delivery destinations include Washington Crossing State Park, Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold, and campgrounds in Cape May County. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's location. Filter listings by Delivery on RVezy and message the host to confirm your address is within their service area.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Trenton%2C%20New%20JerseyHow far can I travel on an RV road trip from Trenton?
Trenton sits almost exactly between New York City and Philadelphia, putting beaches, mountains, and historic landmarks within easy reach. Popular routes include the Jersey Shore (Cape May is about 100 miles, roughly 2 hours), the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania (about 90 miles, around 1 hour 45 minutes), and Washington, D.C. (about 165 miles, about 3 hours). Some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, while others include 100 to 150 free miles per night with a small per-mile fee beyond that. Check the listing's mileage policy before booking, and message the host if you're planning a longer RV road trip from Trenton to ask about flat-rate mileage packages.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Trenton%2C%20New%20JerseyWhere are the best campgrounds near Trenton for an RV trip?
There are excellent options for RV camping near Trenton within a short drive. Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold (about 30 miles east) offers wooded sites with water and electric hookups around a 17-acre lake. Timberlane Campground in Clarksboro (about 40 miles south) has full hookups and is a popular base for visiting Philadelphia. Colonial Woods Family Camping Resort in Upper Black Eddy, PA (about 35 miles north along the Delaware River) is great for families. Washington Crossing State Park sits on the Delaware River about 10 miles from downtown Trenton and is a historic favorite. Most New Jersey state park campgrounds reserve through the state's online system, and summer weekends often fill 3 to 6 months in advance, so book early.
camping.nj.gov/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Trenton?
Late April through mid-October is the sweet spot for an RV trip from Trenton, when central New Jersey weather is most RV-friendly. Spring (April to May) brings mild highs in the 55 to 70 degree range and blooming dogwoods along the Delaware River. Summer (June through August) is warm and humid with highs typically 85 to 92 degrees, perfect for Jersey Shore trips but expect crowds. Early fall (September to mid-October) is often the best season overall, with lower humidity, highs around 60 to 78 degrees, and brilliant Pinelands foliage. Winter rentals are possible but limited, so look for listings that mention four-season insulation. Mid-September is a great time to catch warm beach days at Cape May without peak summer crowds or pricing.
weather.gov/phi/I've never rented an RV before, will I be okay driving one in New Jersey?
Yes, first time renting an RV is more approachable than most guests expect, especially around Trenton. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup covering driving, slide-outs, generator, plumbing, and propane, so nothing is left to guesswork. For a first trip, a Class C motorhome or campervan is a great choice and drives much like a large van or pickup truck. Stick to highways like I-295 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike for your first miles, and avoid downtown Trenton's narrow one-way streets and the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels into NYC, where RVs are restricted. If you'd prefer to skip the drive entirely, choose a host who offers delivery so the rig arrives set up. Do your pickup walkthrough in daylight and record a quick phone video of the host's instructions for easy reference later.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV on the road?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so whether you have a flat on the New Jersey Turnpike, a dead battery near Belmar, or you've locked the keys inside at a Wawa near Princeton, one phone call gets help dispatched. Common services covered include towing, tire changes, jump-starts, fuel delivery, and lockout assistance. Your host is also typically just a phone or text away for quick questions about switches or appliance settings. Save the RVezy support number and your host's number in your phone before pulling out of the driveway, and take a photo of the RV's roadside assistance card in case your battery runs low.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Trenton RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is allowed and one of the best perks of RV rental in New Jersey. From Trenton you can easily cross into Pennsylvania, New York, Delaware, Maryland, and beyond. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the specific host and their insurance, so message the host directly before booking if Niagara Falls, Montreal, or Quebec City is on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the insurance coverage does not extend there. Popular interstate routes from Trenton include the Blue Ridge Parkway in Virginia (about 6 hours), Acadia National Park in Maine (about 8 hours), and the Finger Lakes wine region in upstate New York (about 4 hours).
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost for my New Jersey RV trip?
Fuel is one of the larger trip costs but is very manageable with a little planning. Expect roughly 8 to 12 MPG for most Class C motorhomes, 6 to 10 MPG for Class A rigs, and 16 to 22 MPG for campervans. As a heads up, all New Jersey gas stations are full-service: an attendant pumps for you and self-serve is not permitted. For a 500-mile loop from Trenton to Cape May and back, budget around $150 to $250 in fuel for a typical Class C. Fuel up in New Jersey before crossing into neighboring states, where prices can be higher, and use a fuel-finder app to spot the lowest prices along Route 1 and the Turnpike.
nj.gov/oag/ocp/gasoline.htmHow far in advance should I book a campground near Trenton?
Book earlier than you might expect, because central New Jersey campgrounds fill quickly. New Jersey state park campgrounds (including Washington Crossing, Allaire, and Bass River) reserve through the state's online camping system, and prime summer weekends often book 4 to 6 months in advance. Private parks like Timberlane Campground, Tip Tam Camping Resort, and Holly Acres typically book 1 to 3 months ahead for July and August. Holiday weekends, including Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day, are the toughest and sometimes book close to a year out for waterfront sites. Midweek arrivals from Sunday through Wednesday are dramatically easier to book, and shoulder season in May or late September often has same-week availability with cooler weather and lighter crowds.
camping.nj.gov/What are driving conditions like around Trenton for an RV?
Trenton is very RV-friendly once you know a few local rules. Stick to highways: I-295, I-95, Route 1, and the New Jersey Turnpike are wide, well-maintained, and used by big rigs every day. The Garden State Parkway has sections restricted to passenger vehicles only in its northern portion, so watch posted signs and follow truck/RV routes. Never take an RV through the Holland or Lincoln Tunnels into Manhattan due to propane and size restrictions. Downtown Trenton has narrow colonial-era streets near the State House, so plan parking on the outskirts. Watch for summer thunderstorms from June to August and occasional winter snow from December to February, when bridges over the Delaware can be slick. An RV-specific GPS app helps keep you off restricted parkways and away from low bridges in the NYC and Philadelphia corridors.
state.nj.us/transportation/What hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Trenton?
Campgrounds near Trenton are well equipped for a comfortable RV camping trip. Most private parks like Timberlane, Holly Acres, Tip Tam, and Colonial Woods offer full hookups with 30/50-amp electric, water, and sewer at the site, plus dump stations, potable water fills, hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, and camp stores. New Jersey state park campgrounds, including Allaire and Bass River, typically offer sites without full hookups and provide a central dump station and shared bathhouses. Many parks also offer propane refills on-site or nearby. If you're staying at a state park, plan to dump tanks on your way out at the central station, and bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose since some spigots sit farther from the pad than at private RV parks.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/camping.htmlWhat's inside a typical Trenton RV rental?
Modern RVs come well equipped. A typical motorhome rental in Trenton includes a queen or king bed, a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with shower and toilet, a dining area that often converts to extra sleeping, air conditioning, propane furnace, and a 30-amp shore-power connection. Most Class C rigs sleep 4 to 7 people with seatbelted seats for travel. Many hosts also include a generator (great for boondocking), a flat-screen TV, and some offer Wi-Fi hotspots or Starlink as an add-on. Campervans are smaller but cleverly designed with kitchenettes and convertible beds. Review the listing's amenity list carefully and message the host to confirm whether bedding, kitchen kits, and outdoor chairs are included or available as paid add-ons.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Trenton%2C%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and pickup options are available?
Hosts in the Trenton area offer a strong mix of add-ons that make a trip smoother. Common options include kitchen kits, bedding and linen packages, camp chairs and outdoor tables, generators, bike racks, portable grills, Wi-Fi hotspots, and fully-stocked starter packages. Many hosts also offer RV delivery to your home, hotel, campground, or a local park, with fees typically based on round-trip mileage from the host's location. Mileage policies vary: some listings include unlimited miles, while others include 100 to 150 free miles per night with a per-mile rate beyond that. Bundle your add-ons and delivery in a single message to the host before booking to get a clear total upfront for your motorhome rental in Trenton.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Trenton%2C%20New%20JerseyHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment on RVezy is simple and secure. You pay your full rental total, including the nightly rate, fees, taxes, protection, and add-ons, directly through RVezy when you book. Cash or off-platform payments are never required and should be avoided. A refundable security deposit is also held, typically in the $500 to $1,500 range depending on the rig, and it's released after your trip once the host confirms the RV returned in good condition and within the agreed mileage and fuel level. To avoid deductions, return the rig clean, with tanks dumped, at the agreed fuel and propane level, and on time. Take date-stamped photos and a quick video at both pickup and drop-off to protect your security deposit on your Trenton RV rental.
