Campgrounds near Union City
Union City sits on the Hudson Palisades directly across from Manhattan, so RV travelers here trade rural campgrounds for urban and near-urban options. The closest full-hookup site is Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City, positioned as the closest RV park to New York City, with 30-amp and 50-amp electrical service, water hookups, and pull-through sites that accommodate larger rigs. It stays open year-round and accepts arrivals around the clock.
For a more traditional camping experience, the trip means driving 45 minutes to two hours out of the metro core. Floyd Bennett Field, the campground at Gateway National Recreation Area, sits on the northwest side of the former airport near Hangar B, while Camp Wyanokie, Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park, and Wawayanda State Park lie in the wooded Highlands north and west of the city.
Each option serves a different trip. Liberty Harbor works as a base for sightseeing in Manhattan by ferry or PATH train. Floyd Bennett Field suits families who want beach and bay access without leaving the city. Harriman and Wawayanda deliver lakes, hiking, and quieter nights within a short drive of Union City.
Things to do near Union City
From a Jersey City base, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and Lower Manhattan are reachable by ferry or the PATH train. Liberty State Park, with its waterfront promenade and Liberty Science Center, is minutes away by car.
Out of town, Harriman State Park delivers extensive hiking and lake activities. Beaver Pond Campground adjoins the Lake Welch Recreation Area within Harriman State Park, with nearby recreation areas including Bear Mountain State Park and Lake Tiorati Beach. Wawayanda State Park features a swimming beach, boat launch, kayak rentals, group campsites, hiking trails, and biking trails across roughly 40,000 acres, plus a stretch of the Appalachian Trail. At Floyd Bennett Field, campers can explore hiking trails, historic airplane hangars, a recreation complex with bike rentals, and an outdoor archery range, with kayak launches into Jamaica Bay.

Camp Gateway Brooklyn at Floyd Bennett Field is typically open from mid-May through mid-October, though schedules can change year to year.
Summer weekends are the busiest window across the region. Harriman is a favored weekend getaway for New Yorkers, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Summer months bring humidity, thunderstorms, and full campgrounds; spring and fall bring milder days, foliage, and easier availability.
Winter travel is limited to the year-round options. Liberty Harbor RV Park stays open through the cold months, while state park campgrounds in the Highlands close. Late-season trips should account for shorter daylight, freezing overnight lows, and possible snow on the Palisades Parkway and Route 23 heading to the Highlands parks.

Marc, the owner, and the RV went way beyond my expectations! Marc is super knowledgeable and helpful. The RV had every amenity you could want, was so easy to drive, and very well maintained. Prior to pick up date Marc sent me documentary and video informational instructions that were extremely useful. Marc was always available for any questions whether before or during our trip. We rented the RV for 13 days and traveled pretty far. I have no doubt that because the RV was so comfortable inconvenience. Our trip was effortless. I would definitely rent with Marc again and can’t wait for our next trip!

How to book campgrounds near Union City
Reservation systems differ by park. Beaver Pond and other New York State Parks use ReserveAmerica, with camping reservations available up to 9 months in advance. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
New Jersey state parks including Wawayanda book through the state's njportal.com outdoors system. Floyd Bennett Field reservations can be made up to six months in advance online at Recreation.gov, and the campground has a 14-night maximum stay. Liberty Harbor RV Park takes reservations directly by phone or through its website; plan to book several weeks ahead for summer weekends and holidays.
What to expect
Liberty Harbor is an urban RV park, not a wooded campground. Campers describe it as a basic but practical option with a prime location, essentially a parking lot with hookups rather than a traditional campground, with sites close together and minimal privacy. Larger rigs should expect tight maneuvering through Jersey City streets.
Harriman and Wawayanda are primitive by comparison. Beaver Pond sites accommodate up to two tents and six people, with select sites able to fit a trailer or RV up to 30 feet long, and there are no electrical hookups. Pets are not permitted in Beaver Pond Campground or at Lake Welch. At Wawayanda, water is not available at campsites and must be carried from the main office building, and there are no shower facilities.
Floyd Bennett Field offers a mix of tent and RV sites with basic facilities. The campground on Jamaica Bay offers 32 tent sites and 20 RV parking sites, along with vault toilets, showers, and sinks with running water.
