Upper Pohatcong is a census-designated place in Pohatcong Township, Warren County, in northwestern New Jersey, close to the Delaware River and the Pennsylvania state line near Phillipsburg. The area sits within the New Jersey Highlands region, with Pohatcong Mountain to the north and the Musconetcong River valley nearby, giving RV travelers a mix of ridge-and-valley scenery within easy reach of Interstate 78.
Campgrounds within a short drive span both sides of the river. Mountainview Campground and Ringing Rocks Family Campground are close options on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware. Colonial Woods Family Resort sits farther south in Upper Black Eddy, and Beaver Valley Campgrounds is another Bucks County option within reasonable driving distance.
For a public-land alternative, Spruce Run State Recreational Area lies southeast in Hunterdon County and offers reservoir-based camping run by the New Jersey State Park Service. Together, these parks cover the range from full-hookup family resorts to state-run sites with basic amenities.
Things to do near Upper Pohatcong
The Delaware River is the main draw. Tubing, kayaking, and canoeing outfitters run trips along the stretch between Riegelsville and Upper Black Eddy, and the Delaware Canal towpath on the Pennsylvania side is a flat, family-friendly cycling and walking route.
Spruce Run Reservoir offers boating, sailing, and fishing for largemouth bass, catfish, sunfish, yellow perch, and carp, with a designated swim beach that is subject to periodic harmful algal bloom advisories. Local waters are stocked with trout by NJ Fish and Wildlife, and the park has a boat launch with cartop and trailer ramps.
Other nearby stops include Ringing Rocks County Park with its geological boulder field, Bulls Island along the Delaware, and a cluster of small wineries and farm stands throughout Warren and Hunterdon counties.

Spruce Run Recreation Area offers 67 tent and trailer sites and three shelters from April 1 through October 31, with modern restrooms, showers, and a trailer sanitary dump station within walking distance. The dump station operates on the same April-through-October window.
Summer weekends fill fastest. Peak demand runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and the Fourth of July holiday sells out earliest. Spring and fall bring milder weather, cooler nights, and easier availability, and the surrounding foliage turns vivid in October.
Winter access is limited. Some private parks such as Colonial Woods Family Resort keep sites open for hardy RVers on a limited basis, while Spruce Run remains open for day use with cross-country skiing and ice fishing when conditions allow. Confirm winter operating status directly with each campground before traveling.
How to book
For Spruce Run State Recreational Area, all advance camping reservations must be made online at camping.nj.gov, the New Jersey State Park Service booking portal, up to 11 months ahead of the check-in date. Same-day reservations can be made online until 2:00 p.m., and walk-in reservations are accepted when space is available. Check-in and check-out is noon at tent, trailer, and group campsites.
Private parks such as Mountainview Campground, Ringing Rocks Family Campground, Colonial Woods Family Resort, and Beaver Valley Campgrounds book directly through their own websites or through third-party platforms. Summer weekends should be locked in several weeks ahead. For state park cancellations, a minimum 24-hour notice is required to receive any refund.
What to expect on-site
Site types vary widely. Spruce Run has 7 trailer-only sites with water and 30/50 amp electric hookups, and the remaining sites are no-hookup with picnic table, fire ring, and parking for two vehicles. Pets and alcoholic beverages are prohibited in the state park campground, and no more than two vehicles are allowed per site.
Private resorts on the Pennsylvania side generally offer full hookups, pull-through sites, a pool, a camp store, and organized family activities. Roads through some wooded parks can be narrow with low-hanging branches, so larger rigs should call ahead about site dimensions and clearance.
Cell service is generally reliable near the I-78 corridor but can drop in wooded valleys. Firewood is best bought on site or locally to avoid moving pests across state lines; Spruce Run sells firewood at the park office.
