Camping near Vauxhall, New Jersey
Vauxhall sits in Union County, New Jersey, inside the dense suburban belt west of Newark and roughly a dozen miles from Manhattan. Camping options within an easy drive fall into two very different categories: urban RV parks that function as basecamps for New York City sightseeing, and rustic parks in the New Jersey Highlands that offer forested lakes, trail networks, and traditional tent camping.
On the urban side, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City provides sites within reach of PATH and ferry service into Manhattan. Floyd Bennett Field, part of Gateway National Recreation Area in Brooklyn, adds a National Park Service tent and RV campground on Jamaica Bay.
For a more traditional outdoor trip, Wawayanda State Park in the northern Highlands and Camp Wyanokie in West Milford give families access to lakes, hiking, and quiet forest sites. Fla-Net Park in Netcong rounds out the local private-campground options between Vauxhall and the Highlands region.
Things to do near Vauxhall
From Liberty Harbor RV Park, campers can reach ferries and the PATH train for Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island trips, Manhattan museums, and Liberty State Park. The park sits on the Jersey City waterfront with skyline views of Lower Manhattan.
Floyd Bennett Field offers paved bike paths across the old airfield, historic hangars, an archery range, and access to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, which hosts around 300 migratory bird species. Bike rentals are available at the on-site sports complex.
Wawayanda State Park has more than 60 miles of marked trails, a 19.6-mile section of the Appalachian Trail, swimming and boat rentals at Wawayanda Lake, and fishing for bass, pickerel, catfish, and landlocked salmon. Camp Wyanokie borders Norvin Green State Forest, with hiking that connects to Wyanokie High Point and its 360-degree summit views.

The peak camping window across northern New Jersey runs from late May through mid-October. Wawayanda State Park campsites are open April 1 through October 31, and Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field operates from April through October under National Park Service management. Summer weekends fill first at state parks and at the National Park Service campground, so booking well in advance is advisable.
Spring and fall bring milder temperatures, fewer insects, and strong hiking conditions. Fall foliage in the Highlands peaks in mid to late October. Summer is warm and humid across the region, with regular afternoon thunderstorms and heavier mosquito pressure at Floyd Bennett Field from July through October.
Liberty Harbor RV Park is the outlier: it stays open year-round, making it one of the few options for a winter RV visit to the New York metro area. Wawayanda sits at 1,140 feet and receives significant snow, which closes tent camping but opens designated trails to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, with ice fishing permitted in designated areas.

Marc, the owner, and the RV went way beyond my expectations! Marc is super knowledgeable and helpful. The RV had every amenity you could want, was so easy to drive, and very well maintained. Prior to pick up date Marc sent me documentary and video informational instructions that were extremely useful. Marc was always available for any questions whether before or during our trip. We rented the RV for 13 days and traveled pretty far. I have no doubt that because the RV was so comfortable inconvenience. Our trip was effortless. I would definitely rent with Marc again and can’t wait for our next trip!

How to book Vauxhall-area campgrounds
New Jersey state parks, including Wawayanda State Park, use the state reservation portal at camping.nj.gov. Individual and group sites can be reserved online, and non-resident rates run higher than resident rates. Group sites at Wawayanda require a minimum of seven people and use composting restrooms with no showers, and water must be carried from the main office.
Floyd Bennett Field reservations are handled through Recreation.gov on a rolling six-month booking window. Liberty Harbor RV Park books directly through its website or by phone. Camp Wyanokie, run by the Highlands Nature Friends nonprofit, takes cabin bookings through its own site, and Fla-Net Park operates as a private campground and takes bookings directly.
What to expect on site
Urban and rural sites differ sharply here. Liberty Harbor RV Park is essentially a paved marina lot in Jersey City with little green space, so pets need short walks and the appeal is location rather than nature.
Floyd Bennett Field offers tent and RV sites with a camp store, restrooms, and showers housed in a trailer near the store. RV sites have no water or electric hookups, but a dump station is available and generators are permitted from 8 AM to 10 PM. Pets are not allowed at tent sites.
Wawayanda and Camp Wyanokie are rustic. Wawayanda group sites use composting restrooms with no showers, and water must be carried from the main office. Camp Wyanokie is a 152-acre nonprofit nature center with four rustic cabins that have electricity, a mountain stream, and private trails, rather than a traditional RV or tent campground.
