Campgrounds and RV parks near Vernon Valley, NJ

Vernon Valley sits in the New Jersey Highlands in Sussex County, at the base of the Kittatinny ridge and within about an hour of the New York metropolitan area. The area has a mix of public and private camping options, from primitive state park sites to full-hookup RV parks. Terrain is hilly and forested, so expect winding approach roads and sloped sites at some properties. The closest public anchor is Wawayanda State Park, which offers group camping inside a large protected forest with a spring-fed lake and a long stretch of the Appalachian Trail. Full-hookup RV travelers usually look to Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm in nearby Sussex, Black Bear Campground across the state line in Florida, New York, or KOA Holiday Deerpark New York City along the Neversink River corridor. Rustic tent camping is available at Camp Wyanokie, adjacent to Norvin Green State Forest in West Milford. Together these properties give travelers a workable mix of RV resort amenities, farm-style family camping, and quieter forest options.

Public sites and private resorts use different systems, so book by property. Online reservations for Wawayanda State Park are made through camping.nj.gov. The park offers group sites only, with a seven-person minimum, and there are no showers, so plan accordingly for an RV stay. Black Bear Campground operates year-round and takes reservations directly, by phone or through its website. Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm books online through the Sun Outdoors site or by phone, and KOA Holiday Deerpark New York City is reservable through koa.com. Camp Wyanokie is a rustic tent-only area that does not allow RVs and does not offer sites with running water, toilets, electricity, or WiFi, so it is not suitable for a motorhome or trailer; bookings go through Campspot. For summer weekends and any holiday period, reserve six to eight weeks out at the RV resorts.
