Watchung camping overview
Watchung sits in Somerset County in north-central New Jersey, roughly 30 miles west of Manhattan and bordered by the Watchung Reservation, a Union County park of about 1,945 acres between the First and Second Watchung Mountains. The borough itself does not have a public RV campground, so travelers typically base out of parks in the Skylands region to the west or use the urban RV park across the harbor from New York City to the east.
The closest options for RV renters include Fla-Net Park in Flanders, Liberty Harbor RV Park on the Jersey City waterfront, Goodland Country Club and Spa near Hackettstown, Stephens State Park along the Musconetcong River, and Panther Lake Camping Resort in Andover. Each covers a different use case, from urban NYC access to full-hookup family resorts and quieter state-park tent and small-trailer camping.
Watchung makes a practical hub for splitting time between city sightseeing, Delaware Water Gap day trips, and hiking in the New Jersey Highlands.
Things to do around Watchung
The Watchung Reservation itself offers hiking on a network of trails along Blue Brook and Lake Surprise, the historic Deserted Village of Feltville, and the Trailside Nature and Science Center, the oldest nature center in New Jersey. Trails run through beech-maple-pine forest and along a basalt ridgeline. Biking on the reservation trails is not permitted, but horseback riding is, and the preserve includes about 26 miles of equestrian trails.
Farther afield, Stephens State Park offers trout fishing on the Musconetcong River, six miles of hiking and mountain-biking trails, and a two-mile section of the Highlands Trail that runs the length of the park. Panther Lake Camping Resort adds a 45-acre lake with swimming, boating, a sandy beach, and a swimming pool geared toward families. Liberty Harbor RV Park puts renters within walking distance of the PATH train and ferry service into lower Manhattan.

Camping season in the Watchung area runs primarily from mid-April through October. Stephens State Park operates its campground from April 1 through October 31, and Panther Lake Camping Resort opens April 15 and closes October 31. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City stays open year-round and runs daily bus tours to New York City from March through December.
Summer weekends fill fastest at the family resorts and state-park sites, and holiday weekends should be booked well ahead. Late spring and early fall bring milder temperatures, lower bug pressure, and better site availability. Fall foliage in the Skylands region typically peaks in mid to late October.
Winter closes most rural campgrounds. Snow and coastal storms are common from December through February, and black bears are active throughout the warm months in the northwestern parts of the state, so food-storage rules apply at Stephens State Park and other Highlands-area sites.

Marc, the owner, and the RV went way beyond my expectations! Marc is super knowledgeable and helpful. The RV had every amenity you could want, was so easy to drive, and very well maintained. Prior to pick up date Marc sent me documentary and video informational instructions that were extremely useful. Marc was always available for any questions whether before or during our trip. We rented the RV for 13 days and traveled pretty far. I have no doubt that because the RV was so comfortable inconvenience. Our trip was effortless. I would definitely rent with Marc again and can’t wait for our next trip!

How to book campgrounds near Watchung
New Jersey state park campsites, including Stephens State Park, are booked through the state's online system at camping.nj.gov. Sites can be reserved by date and site number, with availability notifications for cancellations. Stephens has 39 tent and small-trailer sites with fire rings and picnic tables, flush toilets and showers within walking distance, and no hookups.
Private resorts like Panther Lake Camping Resort and Fla-Net Park take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City books through its own site and reservation platform; the park is small, in the range of 50 to 70 sites, and fills quickly in summer, so early booking is recommended.
Watchung Reservation itself does not offer general public campgrounds, so overnight stays require driving out to the parks listed above.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of formats. Stephens State Park offers wooded tent and small-trailer sites along the Musconetcong River, with flush toilets and showers within walking distance, but no hookups and some road noise from nearby Waterloo Road. Sites are shaded, and campers bringing pets must show current vaccination records at check-in.
Panther Lake Camping Resort is a large family resort with 30- and 50-amp hookup sites, cabin and trailer rentals, a swimming pool, mini-golf, planned weekend activities, and a sandy beach on the lake. Cell service can be spotty in wooded sections. Liberty Harbor RV Park is essentially a paved lot with water and electric hookups, a dump station, laundry, hot showers, and skyline views; sites sit close together and the experience is urban rather than woodsy.
Bring bug spray and check for ticks after hikes in wooded parks.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Watchung, NJ
How much does it cost for an RV rental in Watchung, NJ?
RV rental in Watchung, NJ is one of the more affordable ways to explore the Northeast. On RVezy, you typically find travel trailers starting around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes from about $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A models in the $250 to $400 range. To score a cheap RV rental in Watchung, aim for midweek pickups, shoulder-season dates in May or late September, and travel trailers (which usually cost less than drivable motorhomes). Filtering for hosts who offer unlimited mileage can save you money on a longer RV road trip from Watchung up to the Catskills or down the Jersey Shore.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Watchung,%20New%20JerseyDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Watchung, New Jersey?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular New Jersey driver's license (or any standard U.S. or Canadian license) is all you need to rent an RV in Watchung. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement is required for Class A, Class B, or Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, or campervans on the RVezy platform. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID directly through the booking process, so there is no extra DMV paperwork. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit along with your home license and you are ready to roll on your Watchung RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection and roadside assistance comes with my Watchung RV rental?
Every RV rental in Watchung booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit Route 22 or I-78 with real peace of mind. You choose your protection plan level at checkout (not the host), so you can pick coverage that matches your comfort zone. Roadside assistance is included with every protection plan, meaning a flat tire on the way to the Delaware Water Gap or a battery issue at a campground is just a phone call away. It is not auto insurance, but it removes most of the worry that keeps first-timers from booking their first motorhome rental in Watchung.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Watchung RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after you book, so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund eligibility after that grace period depends on how far out from your trip you cancel and the circumstances. Because the policy applies platform-wide, you will not see different rules on each listing in Watchung. Book your RV early, then reserve your campground spot, because New Jersey state parks like Round Valley and Spruce Run book up fast for summer weekends.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Watchung RV trip?
Yes, pet-friendly RV rental in Watchung is easy to find on RVezy. Toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on the search page and you will see motorhomes and travel trailers from local hosts who welcome dogs. New Jersey designates specific pet-friendly campsites at Round Valley Recreation Area, Stephens State Park, Allaire State Park, and Cheesequake State Park, all within a 30 to 60-minute drive of Watchung. Pets must be leashed (six feet max) and you will need proof of rabies vaccination at check-in. Watchung Reservation itself has dog-friendly hiking trails around Surprise Lake, perfect for a pre-trip warmup walk.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/Can the RV be delivered to me in Watchung?
Yes, RV delivery in Watchung is widely available, and it is one of the best moves for first-time renters. Many RVezy hosts in the Watchung and broader Somerset County area will deliver the RV directly to your driveway, a local campground, or a state park like Spruce Run or Round Valley. They will level it, hook it up, and walk you through every system so you skip the stress of towing or maneuvering a big rig through Route 22 traffic. Filter by Delivery on RVezy to see hosts who offer it, and message them to confirm the delivery fee, which is usually based on distance.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Watchung,%20New%20Jersey&Delivery=trueHow far can I realistically travel from Watchung on an RV trip?
You are in a fantastic launching pad: an RV road trip from Watchung puts dozens of incredible destinations within an easy day's drive. The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is about 60 miles west (around 75 minutes), the Jersey Shore at Island Beach State Park is roughly 80 miles southeast, Cape May sits about 145 miles south, and the Catskills are 110 miles north. Look for listings with unlimited mileage if you are planning anything over 200 miles round trip. Leave Watchung before 7 AM to dodge the I-287 and Garden State Parkway crunch.
nps.gov/dewa/index.htmWhere are the best campgrounds near Watchung, NJ?
You have excellent options for RV camping near Watchung, all within an hour's drive. Round Valley Recreation Area in Lebanon Township sits beside a stunning reservoir, about 25 miles west. Spruce Run Recreation Area near Clinton (28 miles west) has the only New Jersey state park campsites with water and electric hookups. Stephens State Park in Hackettstown (35 miles northwest) features pet-friendly riverside sites along the Musconetcong River. For full-hookup amenities, Camp Taylor in Columbia and Mountain View Campground in Hope (both around 45 miles) deliver pools, Wi-Fi, and easy access to the Delaware Water Gap. Reserve early through NJ Outdoors for state parks.
nj.reserveworld.com/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Watchung?
Watchung has a true four-season climate, and late April through late October is the sweet spot for RV camping in New Jersey. Spring (April to early June) brings 55 to 75 degrees F days and blooming forests at Watchung Reservation. Summer (June to August) hits 80 to 90 degrees F with humid afternoons, perfect for Jersey Shore trips. Fall (mid-September through late October) is the local favorite, with crisp 50 to 70 degrees F days and spectacular foliage along the Delaware Water Gap. Most NJ state park campgrounds operate April 1 through October 31. Book the last weekend of September for peak fall colors and smaller crowds.
weather.gov/phi/I have never rented an RV before. How does the pickup process work in Watchung?
You will be in great hands, even if it is your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host in the Watchung area provides a hands-on orientation when you pick up (or when they deliver), walking you through propane, water systems, the generator, slide-outs, leveling, and dump procedures. Most walkthroughs run 30 to 60 minutes, and hosts encourage questions. You can also message your host directly from the listing before booking to ask anything from whether the RV is easy to drive on I-78 to how the awning works. Take short video clips during the walkthrough so you can replay them at the campground.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037929393-What-to-expect-during-RV-pickupWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road during my Watchung RV trip?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking with a protection plan includes 24/7 roadside assistance, so a flat tire on Route 78, a dead battery at Round Valley, or a mechanical issue in the Poconos is one phone call away from help. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip to coordinate solutions, and your host is typically just a text away for quick questions about quirks of their specific rig. For medical or true emergencies, dial 911. Save the RVezy support number and your host's number in your phone before you leave the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take a Watchung RV rental into New York, Pennsylvania, or other states?
Yes, interstate travel from Watchung is one of the best parts of renting here. Most RVezy hosts allow travel throughout the continental U.S., so you can road-trip into New York State (the Catskills are 110 miles north), Pennsylvania (Delaware Water Gap is 60 miles west), Vermont, Maine, the Carolinas, and beyond. Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed by some hosts (message them from the listing to confirm), but travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance and the protection plan do not extend there. Popular loops from Watchung include the New England fall-foliage circuit and the Blue Ridge Parkway run south.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for a Watchung RV trip?
Budgeting is straightforward for a Watchung RV trip. Class A motorhomes average 7 to 10 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes get 8 to 12 MPG, campervans (Class B) achieve 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 MPG combined). New Jersey requires full-service fueling at every pump statewide, so just stay in your seat at the pump. For a typical weekend run from Watchung to the Delaware Water Gap and back (about 130 miles), expect roughly $40 to $70 in fuel for a Class C. Fuel up in NJ before crossing into NY or PA, where prices and taxes are often higher.
njconsumeraffairs.gov/ocp/Pages/Gasoline-Service-Stations.aspxHow far in advance should I book a campground near Watchung?
Book early and you will have your pick of the best sites. New Jersey state park reservations open through the NJ Outdoors portal, and summer weekends at Round Valley, Spruce Run, and Stephens State Park frequently sell out within hours of opening. For private campgrounds like Camp Taylor or Mountain View, aim for 2 to 3 months ahead for summer Saturdays. Shoulder-season weekday trips are far easier, often bookable just days before. If state parks are full, check Hudson Valley and Pocono campgrounds, which are still inside a comfortable 90-minute drive from Watchung and often have last-minute availability.
nj.reserveworld.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Watchung?
Driving an RV from Watchung is very manageable once you know the rhythm. The big arteries (I-78, I-287, US-22, and the Garden State Parkway) are mostly RV-friendly, but expect heavy congestion weekdays from 6 to 9 AM and 3 to 7 PM, especially near the I-78/I-287 interchange. The Garden State Parkway has height restrictions on some overpasses, so taller motorhomes should use the New Jersey Turnpike or I-287 instead. Watchung's local roads through the Watchung Reservation are scenic but winding, fine for trailers but slow. Many first-timers prefer RV delivery in Watchung to skip city driving entirely and start their trip at the campground.
state.nj.us/transportation/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Watchung?
You will have plenty of comfort options. Private campgrounds in the Watchung region (think Camp Taylor, Mountain View, and Jugtown Mountain Campsites) typically offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, and sewer), Wi-Fi, dump stations, laundry, hot showers, and pools. New Jersey state parks are more rustic: Spruce Run is the only state park with water-and-electric sites (no sewer), while Round Valley, Stephens, and Allaire offer non-hookup sites with shared dump stations and potable water fill-ups on site. Quiet hours typically run 10 PM to 6 AM at state parks. Top off fresh water before leaving the campground, since in-town water fills around Watchung are limited.
nj.gov/dep/parksandforests/parks/What is actually inside a typical Watchung RV rental?
You will be surprised how well-equipped most RVs are. A typical motorhome rental in Watchung comes with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds (sleeping 4 to 8 people total), a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower, roof air conditioning, a propane furnace, hot water, and seatbelted travel seats for everyone on board. Many include a generator, outdoor awning, outside speakers, and a flatscreen TV. Wi-Fi and cell boosters depend on the host. Travel trailers and fifth wheels include the same living amenities minus the cab. Check the listing's photos and amenity list, and message the host with any must-haves before booking.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Watchung,%20New%20JerseyWhat add-ons and mileage policies should I know about for a Watchung RV rental?
Customizing your motorhome rental in Watchung is easy. Most hosts offer add-ons like linens and bedding packs, kitchen kits, camp chairs, outdoor grills, bike racks, generators, and even pre-stocked propane, each priced individually on the listing. Mileage policies vary: many hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night with extra miles charged around $0.30 to $0.50 each, while others advertise unlimited mileage (great for longer road trips from Watchung up to New England). Pickup and drop-off are usually at the host's address in the Watchung area, with delivery available for a fee. Bundle delivery, setup, and a generator add-on for a true plug-and-play first-timer experience.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/categories/360002053373-For-rentersHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your RV rental in Watchung, NJ, RVezy charges your card for the rental total, and the host's security deposit is held separately (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV's value), then released back to you after the trip ends, assuming the RV is returned in the same condition. All payments run through the RVezy platform (never directly to the host), which keeps your money protected and gives you full booking records. To avoid any deposit issues, do a quick video walkaround at pickup and drop-off, follow the host's fuel and dump-tank instructions, and keep the RV smoke-free. Message your host with any concerns immediately, since most issues are easily resolved on the spot.
