Campgrounds and RV parks near Wharton, NJ

Water recreation drives most trips. Panther Lake Camping Resort's 45-acre lake supports swimming, boating, and fishing, and the resort adds a sand beach, pool, mini golf, and scheduled family activities on-site. The Great Divide Campground, LLC offers a stocked fishing lake, free kayaks, a heated pool, and a full calendar of live music and planned activities in season. Off-property, the Musconetcong River at Stephens State Park is stocked with trout, and the park connects to Allamuchy Mountain trails for hiking and mountain biking. Saxton Falls, less than a mile from Stephens, preserves a lock from the historic Morris Canal that once ran 90 miles from Newark to Phillipsburg. Waterloo Village and Lake Hopatcong are both short drives from Wharton for day trips.

The private campgrounds around Wharton run a standard northern-New-Jersey season. Panther Lake Camping Resort operates roughly April 15 through October 31, and The Great Divide Campground, LLC opens May 1 and runs through mid-October. Fla-Net Park offers a longer window for RVs, making it a useful option for shoulder-season travel when the resort parks are closed. Stephens State Park's campground is strictly seasonal, running April 1 through October 31, with reservations handled through the state's camping.nj.gov portal. Summer weekends fill fastest, especially July and August, when lakefront resorts book up well in advance and holiday weekends often sell out weeks ahead. Spring brings trout stocking on the Musconetcong and cool nights that still dip near freezing in March. Fall delivers strong foliage across the Skylands through mid-October, then most parks close for the season. Winter is quiet across Morris and Sussex counties, with snow, closed campgrounds, and limited services at the private resorts.

The Skylands region is wooded and hilly, with narrow secondary roads leading to most campgrounds. Cell service is inconsistent at Panther Lake Camping Resort and other rural properties, so download directions before leaving Wharton. Fla-Net Park sits closer to shopping and restaurants along the I-80 corridor, which trades a woodsy feel for convenience and easy resupply. RV renters should expect tight interior roads at Stephens State Park, where sites suit rigs up to 40 feet but larger motorhomes and fifth wheels can find maneuvering difficult. Private resorts are more forgiving, with pull-thrus and full hookups common. Alcohol is not permitted at New Jersey state campsites, and quiet hours are enforced from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. Bring bug protection in summer and layers for cool river-valley nights.
