Campgrounds near Airmont
Airmont sits in Rockland County at the southern edge of New York's Lower Hudson Valley, minutes from the New Jersey border and roughly 25 miles from the George Washington Bridge. The area draws RV travelers because it combines quick access to New York City with immediate proximity to two major public-land systems: New York's Harriman State Park to the north and New Jersey's Highlands parks and forests to the south and west.
The closest developed campground is Beaver Pond Campground, which adjoins the Lake Welch Recreation Area within Harriman State Park. Harriman is the second-largest park in the New York state parks system, spanning roughly 46,000 acres with numerous lakes, over 200 miles of trails, and two public camping areas. Across the state line, Wawayanda State Park and Camp Wyanokie sit in the New Jersey Highlands near West Milford.
RV travelers who want full hookups typically choose Black Bear Campground in Florida, NY, about 30 minutes north, or Liberty Harbor RV Park on the Jersey City waterfront for city-focused trips.
Things to do near Airmont
Hiking dominates the area. Harriman State Park holds over 200 miles of trails maintained by the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, and the Appalachian Trail runs the length of the park. Wawayanda State Park adds more than 60 miles of marked trails plus a 19.6 mile section of the Appalachian Trail, which is restricted to hiking only.
Water recreation is a summer draw. Lake Welch at Harriman offers a lifeguarded swimming beach in season, and Wawayanda Lake supports swimming, boating with electric motors, and fishing. Landlocked salmon were introduced to Wawayanda Lake in 2006, and it is one of only a handful of deep New Jersey lakes with year-round habitat for cold-water fish such as trout and salmon.
For families using an RV as a base, the Jersey City waterfront gives easy PATH and ferry access to Manhattan, Ellis Island, and the Statue of Liberty.

The camping season in the Airmont area runs mainly from April through October. Wawayanda State Park's campsites are open April 1 to October 31, and Camp Wyanokie typically opens the first weekend in April and closes the last weekend in November. Beaver Pond in Harriman follows a similar warm-season pattern. Spring brings mild days and manageable crowds, but nights can still drop below freezing into April.
Summer is peak season and books out fast. Harriman is a favored weekend getaway for New Yorkers, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Expect warm, humid days, afternoon thunderstorms, and busy beaches. Weekday arrivals see quieter campgrounds and easier trail parking.
Fall is the sweet spot for many RV travelers: cool nights, lower humidity, and strong foliage color through October. Winter closes the state park campgrounds, though a few private RV parks operate year-round. Hunting is permitted in designated areas of Wawayanda and parts of Harriman during posted seasons, which is worth knowing if hiking off marked trails.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book near Airmont
New York and New Jersey run separate reservation systems, so plan by park. For Beaver Pond in Harriman State Park, reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites released at the 9-month window at 8AM Monday through Friday and 9AM on weekends during the March 15 through Labor Day period. Bookings go through the ReserveAmerica portal for New York State Parks or its call center.
Wawayanda State Park online reservations are handled at camping.nj.gov, the New Jersey Division of Parks and Forestry portal. Group sites often require contacting the park office directly. Camp Wyanokie uses its own online system through Campspot: reservations are required for day use or overnight use, must be made before 5pm on the date of check-in, and there is no on-site staff.
Private parks such as Black Bear Campground and Liberty Harbor RV Park take reservations by phone or through their own websites.
What to expect near Airmont
Sites in the state park systems are rustic by RV standards. Beaver Pond can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 ft. long on select sites, but there are no electrical hookups for trailers at this campground. Alcohol is not permitted at Beaver Pond, and pets are not permitted. Camp Wyanokie is a rustic tent-only area that cannot accommodate RVs, trailers, or pop-ups, and campsites do not have running water, toilets, electricity, or WiFi.
For full hookups, Black Bear Campground provides a more traditional RV experience with a range of site types. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is a paved urban site with harbor views rather than a wooded campground.
Bears are active across the region. Campers are provided with bear habitat guidelines that must be followed to avoid unsafe bear encounters, so store food and trash accordingly. Quiet hours are enforced at the state park campgrounds.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Airmont, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Airmont, NY?
Good news: RV rental in Airmont is more affordable than you might think, especially compared to hotels in the nearby Hudson Valley or NYC area. On RVezy you'll typically see travel trailers starting around $70 to $120 per night, Class C motorhomes from about $150 to $220, and Class B campervans from roughly $130 to $200. Larger Class A motorhomes run higher. To find a cheap RV rental in Airmont, travel mid-week, book outside peak summer weekends, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: shoulder season trips in late September catch peak Harriman foliage at lower nightly rates, and many Rockland County hosts drop prices once the leaves fall.
parks.ny.gov/visit/state-parks/harriman-state-parkWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Airmont, NY?
Great news: a regular New York State Class D driver's license (or your home state or country equivalent) is all you need for virtually every RV rental in Airmont. No Commercial Driver License (CDL) is required for personal-use recreational vehicles in New York unless the RV's Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) exceeds 26,000 pounds, which would require an R endorsement. The vast majority of RVs on RVezy fall well under that threshold. You'll need to be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license and you're set to rent an RV in New York.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/commercial-drivers/get-a-commercial-driver-license-cdlIs my RV rental protected if something happens during my trip?
Yes, every RV rental in Airmont booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance. The protection plan helps cover damage to the RV during your Hudson Valley trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout (the cancellation and protection policies are set by RVezy, not by individual hosts). Review the available tiers before confirming so your motorhome rental in Airmont starts with full peace of mind. Pro tip: keep the RVezy support and roadside assistance contacts saved in your phone before heading out toward Harriman or the Palisades Parkway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Airmont RV rental?
Booking your Airmont RV trip is low-risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy, not individual hosts, so the experience is consistent whether you book a campervan rental in Airmont or a fifth wheel. There is a grace period right after booking, and additional flexibility tiers depending on how far in advance you cancel. If a host has to cancel, RVezy helps you find a replacement RV or issues a refund or travel credit. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best Rockland County rigs for summer Harriman weekends, knowing the RVezy cancellation policy gives you a safety net if plans change.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV trip from Airmont?
Yes, many pet-friendly RV rentals in Airmont are ready to welcome your dog. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see hosts who allow pets, and message them with your dog's size and breed if you have questions. Local favorites include the leashed trails at Kakiat County Park just minutes from Airmont and most of Harriman State Park's trail system (leashed pets allowed, proof of rabies vaccination required at New York State Parks). Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman does not allow pets at campsites, so consider Black Bear Campground in Florida, NY as a pet-friendly alternative. Bring your rabies certificate and you are ready to roll.
parks.ny.gov/documents/PetsInParksPolicy.pdfCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Airmont?
Yes, RV delivery in Airmont is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who'd rather skip driving a big rig down the Palisades Interstate Parkway. Many local hosts will deliver the RV to nearby campgrounds like Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park, Black Bear Campground in Florida NY, or even your driveway in Suffern, Monsey, or Sloatsburg. They'll level the RV, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before handing over the keys. Use the Delivery filter to spot hosts offering this service, and message them for a delivery quote based on mileage.
parks.ny.gov/visit/state-parks/harriman-state-parkHow far can I drive on a typical RV rental from Airmont?
You have serious range from Airmont. Most RVezy hosts include a daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 free miles per day), and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for longer road trips. Popular destinations within an easy drive include Harriman State Park (about 10 miles), Bear Mountain State Park (about 15 miles), the Catskills around Phoenicia (about 90 miles), Lake George (about 200 miles), and the Finger Lakes (about 260 miles). Heading south, Cape May, NJ is roughly 170 miles. Pro tip: for a longer RV road trip from Airmont, filter for unlimited-mileage listings or confirm a flat mileage rate with the host upfront.

You've got a true four-season playground here, but the sweet spot for RV camping in Airmont is mid-May through mid-October. Spring (May to June) brings 60-75°F days and blooming trails in Harriman. Summer (July to August) averages 75-85°F with warm lake swimming at Lake Welch and Lake Tiorati. Fall (mid-September to late October) is the local insider's favorite, with crisp 50-70°F days and spectacular Hudson Valley foliage peaking around Columbus Day. Winter dips to 17-39°F, but year-round campgrounds like Black Bear Campground keep the adventure going. Pro tip: book your fall foliage Airmont RV trip by July to lock in the best rigs.
weather.gov/okx/I've never driven an RV. Will I be okay renting one in Airmont?
You're going to be just fine, and you're far from alone. Most first time renting an RV trips out of Airmont go smoothly because every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, and dumping tanks. You can also message your host with questions anytime before the trip. For extra confidence, start small with a Class C motorhome or campervan (under 25 feet) and choose delivery to your campground so the host parks and sets up the RV for you. Pro tip: practice in the Palisades Center mall parking lot in West Nyack on a quiet morning before heading to Harriman.
dmv.ny.gov/about-dmv/safety-tipsWhat happens if my RV breaks down during the trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking from Airmont includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are at a Hudson Valley campground or pulled over on I-87. Roadside assistance can help with tire changes, jump-starts, lockouts, and towing. Your host is your direct contact for questions about how systems on their specific RV work, and RVezy customer support is available before, during, and after the trip. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before leaving the host's driveway so you never have to dig for it.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Airmont RV rental into other states or up to Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is common on RV rentals from Airmont because you are right on the New Jersey border with easy access to Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Vermont, and Massachusetts. Popular routes include the Jersey Shore (about 140 miles), Acadia National Park in Maine (about 450 miles), the Adirondacks (about 200 miles), and Niagara Falls (about 380 miles). Cross-border travel into Canada may be allowed depending on the host and insurance, so confirm with your host in RVezy messaging before booking if Quebec or Ontario is on your itinerary. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection plan and roadside assistance do not extend there.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an Airmont RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier costs to estimate. New York's average regular gas price typically runs around $3.10 to $3.60 per gallon, and Rockland County tends to track close to the state average. Class C motorhomes and tow vehicles pulling travel trailers usually get 8 to 12 MPG, while campervans can reach 18 to 22 MPG. For a 300-mile Hudson Valley loop in a Class C, budget roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in New Jersey just over the border along Route 17, where prices are often noticeably cheaper than in New York, and use a fuel-price app to track Airmont-area stations.

Driving conditions around Airmont are very RV-friendly once you know the basics. You're right off Exit 14B of the New York State Thruway (I-87) and the Palisades Interstate Parkway, both wide, well-maintained highways. Important local note: the Palisades Parkway prohibits commercial vehicles but allows personal-use RVs, so you're fine in a motorhome. Avoid the Saw Mill River Parkway, Bronx River Parkway, and other Westchester parkways with low bridges, those ban RVs entirely. Stick to I-87, I-287, and Route 17. Pro tip: plan to leave Airmont before 3 PM on Fridays in summer to dodge NYC weekend traffic heading into Harriman.

Hosts also place a refundable security deposit hold (typically a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the RV) shortly before pickup, separate from your booking payment. As long as the RV is returned in the same condition and within the agreed mileage and generator hours, that deposit is released back to your card. Pro tip: take a quick walk-around video at pickup and dropoff to document the RV's condition for a smooth deposit refund.
