Campgrounds near Altamont, New York
Altamont sits in Albany County at the base of the Helderberg Escarpment, roughly 18 miles southwest of Albany. The village serves as a practical launch point for RV travelers heading to Thacher State Park, the Mohawk River corridor, and the wider Capital Region. Terrain is rolling: limestone cliffs and hardwood forest to the south and west, canal-front flats to the north.
The closest publicly operated option is Thompsons Lake - Thacher State Park, part of the New York State Parks system and booked through ReserveAmerica. Private parks fill in the rest of the map: Frosty Acres Campgrounds and Arrowhead Marina and RV Park sit closer to Schenectady on the Mohawk River, while Mc Conchie Heritage Acres Camp Grounds and Locust Park Campground round out the nearby options for longer stays.
Most sites in the area are wooded, with a mix of tent, trailer, and RV hookups. Expect 30 and 50 amp service at the private RV parks and non-electric sites at the state campground.
Things to do near Altamont
Thacher State Park is the main draw. The Indian Ladder Trail traces the escarpment cliff face, and the park's overlooks take in the Hudson-Mohawk Valley plus the Adirondack and Green Mountains on clear days. Thompsons Lake supports swimming from a sandy beach, carry-in boating, rental rowboats, and fishing, with a nature center on site.
On the water, Arrowhead Marina and RV Park sits directly on the Mohawk River (Erie Canal) with an on-site boat launch and dockage, useful for anglers and paddlers. The Mohawk-Hudson Bike-Hike Trail is close by for cycling.
Families with kids can tack on the Empire State Aerosciences Museum, downtown Schenectady's Stockade District, and the state capitol complex in Albany, all within a short drive of the village.

Camping season in this part of New York is tightly compressed. Thompsons Lake Campground operates on the standard state-park schedule and is busiest between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when lakeside sites at Thacher fill quickly and weekend reservations should be locked in months out. Private parks like Arrowhead and Frosty Acres also concentrate demand in the summer months.
Spring is variable: April and early May can bring cold nights, muddy access roads, and lingering rain, but wildflowers and waterfall flow along the escarpment peak during this window. Bugs pick up in late May and June.
Early fall is the strongest shoulder season. September nights turn crisp, foliage color across the Helderbergs typically peaks in early to mid-October, and crowds thin quickly after Labor Day. By November most private parks have closed for the season, and the Thompsons Lake campground shifts out of active operation until spring.

We had a great experience renting from Krystal and her husband. They were responsive, helpful, and very accommodating from start to finish. The camper was a perfect solution for hosting our out-of-town guests and provided the extra space we needed. We would gladly rent from them again in the future.
