Campgrounds near Arkport, New York
Arkport sits in Steuben County in New York's Southern Tier, within easy driving distance of the Finger Lakes and Genesee Valley. The village is bordered by rolling hills, hardwood forest, and creek-cut gorges, which shape the local camping options: a mix of private RV parks, a state park with tent and rustic-cabin sites, and small lake-based recreation areas.
Close to the village, Sun Valley Campsites and Skybrook Campground offer private-park options for RV travelers. A short drive north toward Dansville puts campers within reach of Sugar Creek Glen Campground, a family-run property on Poags Hole Road known for its on-site waterfalls and creek walk. Stony Brook State Park, roughly a half hour north, is the main public campground in the area and the region's signature gorge park.
Lake Demmon Recreation Area, east near Bath, rounds out the mix with a small lake setting, ATV-trail access, and a swimming area suited to quieter overnight stays. Together these options cover most RV needs, from full-service private sites to rustic wooded loops.
Things to do near Arkport
Waterfalls and gorge hikes dominate the day-use list. Stony Brook State Park has a rugged gorge with three waterfalls, rim and gorge hiking trails, and a stream-fed, guarded swimming pool at the day-use entrance. Sugar Creek Glen borders two creeks and features five on-site waterfalls, with hiking, swimming holes, and trout fishing on the property.
For broader itineraries, Letchworth State Park is under an hour north, and the Finger Lakes wine and boating region begins a short drive east. Closer to camp, families can swim, fish, and access ATV trails at Lake Demmon Recreation Area, or use Arkport as a base for road cycling and rail-trail rides on the surrounding country roads.

The camping season here runs roughly from mid-May through early or mid-October. Stony Brook State Park's campground typically opens in mid-May and closes in early to mid-October, with the gorge trail generally opening late May once safety inspections are complete. Private parks like Sugar Creek Glen follow a similar spring-to-fall calendar.
Summer is the busiest stretch. July and August bring warm days, occasional afternoon thunderstorms, and the highest booking pressure, particularly for creekside sites at Stony Brook. Late June through mid-August is prime for swimming and waterfall visits. Weekends around Independence Day and Labor Day fill earliest.
Spring is cool and wet, with strong waterfall flow from snowmelt and fewer crowds; nights can still drop near freezing into early May. Fall brings crisp air and reliable foliage color from late September into mid-October. In winter, most of Stony Brook State Park is closed to the public, including the South Entrance, playgrounds, and hiking trails, though the North Entrance stays open year round for walkers, and cross-country ski trails are available when snow allows.
How to book campgrounds near Arkport
Stony Brook State Park is reserved through the New York State Parks system on ReserveAmerica. Campsites can be booked up to nine months in advance for a one-night minimum, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival. Walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. Popular creekside sites go quickly, so booking as early as the nine-month window opens is advised for peak weekends.
Private campgrounds, including Sugar Creek Glen Campground, Sun Valley Campsites, Skybrook Campground, and Lake Demmon Recreation Area, take reservations directly by phone or through their own websites. For summer weekends and holidays, plan on booking several weeks or months out.
What to expect on-site
Hookups vary widely by campground. Stony Brook State Park has no electric or water at individual sites, though comfort stations with showers and one dump station are available, and sites can accommodate a range of RV lengths. Generator hours are restricted to set morning and evening windows, alcohol is prohibited, and quiet hours run from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. Sugar Creek Glen's RV sites include water and 30-amp electric, with some 50-amp sites, a maximum camper length of 38 feet, and a dump station available at check-out.
Expect wooded, hilly terrain, gravel roads, and cell service that can be spotty in the gorges. Follow New York's rules on transporting firewood, and bring proof of rabies vaccination for pets staying at state park sites. Bugs, ticks, and slick gorge rocks are the main hazards; Stony Brook prohibits swimming and wading in the gorge itself.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Arkport, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Arkport, NY?

Travel trailers typically run $90 to $160 per night, Class C motorhomes $175 to $275, and larger Class A motorhomes $250 to $400, with hosts setting their own rates on RVezy. You will save the most by booking midweek and avoiding peak summer weekends in July and August when Stony Brook State Park and Letchworth fill up. Pro tip: searching shoulder season dates in late May or mid-September often unlocks cheap RV rental Arkport pricing while the Steuben County hills are at their most scenic.
parks.ny.gov/visit/state-parks/stony-brook-state-parkWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Arkport?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Arkport for almost every rig on RVezy. New York's Department of Motor Vehicles allows a standard Class D license to operate any personal-use RV with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 26,000 pounds or less, which covers virtually every campervan, travel trailer, and Class C motorhome listed on the platform. No Commercial Driver's License (CDL) needed. You will need to be 25 or older and verify your ID through RVezy during checkout. International visitors should grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from their home auto club before flying in, and you are ready to roll into the Finger Lakes.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/get-driver-licenseIs the RV protected if something goes wrong on my trip in Arkport?
Yes, every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can pull out of Arkport with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host), so you can match it to your comfort zone, and the plan provides meaningful financial protection against most damage to the RV during your trip. It is not traditional auto insurance, but it is built specifically for peer-to-peer RV rentals and travels with you whether you are exploring Ossian State Forest or cruising Interstate 86. Most first-time renters tell us this is the moment booking actually felt easy.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Arkport RV rental?
You are not locked in the moment you book. RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation (not individual hosts), and it includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. After that window, refund eligibility depends on how far out you are from your trip start date. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or issues travel credit so you can rebook another Arkport RV rental quickly. Book now, and if life shifts, you have a clear, platform-managed path forward.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Arkport RV trip?
Absolutely. Pet-friendly RV rental Arkport options are easy to find on RVezy by toggling the Pet-Friendly filter, and many local hosts welcome well-behaved dogs. Once you arrive, New York State Parks allow up to two leashed pets per campsite with proof of current rabies vaccination required at check-in, which covers Stony Brook State Park in nearby Dansville. The Finger Lakes Trail and Ossian State Forest both offer leashed-dog hiking just minutes from town. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees, and pack a printed copy of your dog's vaccination record for state park check-in.
parks.ny.gov/recreation/pets/Can the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Arkport?
Yes, RV delivery Arkport is one of the easiest ways to start a trip, especially if you are new to towing or driving a big rig. Many RVezy hosts in the Hornell, Dansville, and Arkport area will drop the RV directly at Sun Valley Campsites, Sugar Creek Glen, or Stony Brook State Park, level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Filter for Delivery on the listing page to see who offers it, and the fee is usually based on mileage from the host's location. It is the closest thing to an instant Finger Lakes RV trip you can book.
parks.ny.gov/visit/state-parks/stony-brook-state-parkHow far can I drive from Arkport on a typical RV trip?
Plenty far, and the views get better the farther you go. Popular RV road trip from Arkport routes include Letchworth State Park (about 35 minutes north on NY-36), Watkins Glen and Seneca Lake wine country (roughly 75 minutes east), Niagara Falls (about 2 hours northwest via Interstate 390), and the Adirondacks (around 4 to 5 hours northeast). Mileage policies are set by each host on RVezy, so look closely at the listing: some include 100 to 150 free miles per night, others offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is gold for a Finger Lakes loop. Map your route first, then filter accordingly.
dot.ny.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Arkport, NY?
You are spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Arkport include Sun Valley Campsites on Poags Hole Road (281 sites, full hookups up to 50-amp, pool, open late April through mid-October), Sugar Creek Glen Campground just down the road (great for families, with a dump station), Skybrook Campground (country setting with rowboats and live music weekends), Stony Brook State Park Campground in nearby Dansville (88 wooded sites and 8 rustic cabins, no hookups, generator hours 9 to 11 AM and 5 to 9 PM), and Kanakadea Park near Hornell. Book Stony Brook through Reserve America up to nine months ahead for creekside spots.
parks.ny.gov/visit/state-parks/stony-brook-state-parkWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip in Arkport?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for RV camping Arkport, and each window has its own personality. June through August brings warm 72 to 78 F highs and lush green hills perfect for swimming at Stony Brook's natural stream-fed pool. September and early October are arguably the sweet spot: cool nights, fewer crowds, and the Western New York fall foliage exploding across the Genesee Valley. Winters here are genuinely cold and snowy (lows in the teens, around 67 inches of snow per year), so most local campgrounds close mid-October. Pro tip: book the last weekend of September now for peak leaf-peeping at Letchworth.
weather.gov/buf/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You will be more than okay, and Arkport is actually a great place for a first time renting an RV. The terrain is rolling, the country roads are wide, and traffic outside of Hornell is light. Every RVezy host gives you a walkthrough at pickup covering generator, water, propane, slide-outs, and dump procedures, and you can message them mid-trip with questions. Choose a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental Arkport if you want to ease in. Pro tip: do a slow lap of the Sun Valley Campsites loop on day one before pointing the rig toward Letchworth's narrow park roads.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/get-driver-licenseWhat if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never stranded. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, lockouts, dead batteries, and towing. Cell coverage is solid along Interstate 86 and NY-36 around Arkport, and Hornell (about 10 minutes south) has full-service repair shops and tire centers if you need anything quick. Your host is also your local lifeline and can usually troubleshoot quirks over a phone call. Save the roadside number in your phone before pulling out of the driveway, and your motorhome rental Arkport adventure is fully backed up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Arkport RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes to other US states, and often yes to Canada with permission. Your New York registration and the included protection package cover travel throughout the lower 48, so popular long hauls like Niagara Falls (2 hours), the Pocono Mountains (3.5 hours south), or Acadia in Maine (10 hours east) are all on the table. Cross-border travel into Canada (Niagara Falls, Ontario is right there) requires advance written approval from your host and may need supplemental coverage, so message them before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Bring a passport for any northbound jump.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on an Arkport RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable after the rental itself, but it's predictable once you know the numbers. Most travel trailers do not burn fuel directly (your tow vehicle does), Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, and Class A motorhomes run 6 to 10 mpg. New York gas prices typically sit slightly above the national average, and you'll find the cheapest fill-ups at the Kwik Fill and Mirabito stations in Hornell rather than at highway exits. A 300-mile Finger Lakes loop in a Class C might cost $100 to $140 in gas. Pro tip: top off in Hornell before heading north on Interstate 390, where stations thin out.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Arkport?
For summer weekends, book as early as you can, especially for Stony Brook State Park, which opens reservations up to nine months in advance through the New York State Parks Reserve America system (call 1-800-456-2267 or book online). Sun Valley Campsites and Sugar Creek Glen take bookings on their own websites and fill up for July 4th, Labor Day, and Halloween weekends. Midweek and shoulder season (late May, September) you can often grab spots two to three weeks out. Pro tip: same-day reservations at New York state parks are allowed until 3 PM, a lifesaver for spontaneous Arkport RV trip detours.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/stony-brook-state-park/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NY&parkId=261What are the driving conditions like around Arkport?
Friendly for RVs, with a few seasonal heads-ups. Arkport sits at about 1,200 feet elevation in the rolling hills of Steuben County, and main routes like Interstate 86, Interstate 390, and NY-36 are wide, well-maintained, and easy to navigate in any size motorhome. Country roads off Poags Hole and toward Ossian State Forest can get narrow and hilly, so take them slow. From November through March, expect snow and occasional ice (the area averages 67 inches of snow a year), which is why most RV rentals run April through October. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk year-round on NY-36.
dot.ny.gov/travelersWhat amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Arkport?
You'll find a great mix. Full-hookup parks like Sun Valley Campsites and Sugar Creek Glen offer water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer, cable, and Wi-Fi zones, plus dump stations, laundry, pools, and camp stores. Stony Brook State Park is the rustic counterweight with no electric or water at sites but excellent restrooms, hot showers, fire rings, and picnic tables, plus that famous stream-fed swimming pool. For dumping or filling fresh water mid-trip, Sun Valley and Sugar Creek Glen both have public dump stations. Pro tip: Stony Brook enforces generator hours (9 to 11 AM and 5 to 9 PM), so plan your battery use accordingly.
parks.ny.gov/visit/state-parks/stony-brook-state-parkWhat features come standard in an Arkport RV rental?
Most RVs on the platform come fully equipped for a comfortable Finger Lakes getaway. Expect a real bed (or two), a kitchen with stove, sink, fridge, and microwave, a bathroom with toilet and shower, dining seating with seatbelts for travel, heat and air conditioning, and a propane system for cooking and hot water. Many rentals add TVs, outdoor speakers, awnings, and built-in generators for off-grid nights at Stony Brook State Park. Wi-Fi is usually BYO via a hotspot, since campground signal varies. Each listing spells out exactly what's included, so you can compare a basic campervan rental Arkport against a fully loaded family RV trip Arkport setup in seconds.
rvezy.com/What add-ons and pickup options should I look for when I rent an RV in Arkport?
Add-ons are where you customize the trip. Popular extras on rent an RV in Arkport listings include linen and kitchen packages (typically $25 to $75), bike racks, kayaks, generators, propane fire pits, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is usually at the host's home in Arkport, Hornell, or Dansville, but many hosts offer RV delivery to Sun Valley Campsites or Stony Brook State Park for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary: some hosts include 100 free miles per night, others offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. Pro tip: if you are planning a loop to Niagara Falls and Watkins Glen, prioritize a listing with generous or unlimited mileage to keep the budget tight.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Arkport%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple and secure. You pay through RVezy directly (never cash to the host), with a portion charged at booking to confirm your dates and the balance billed before your trip. A refundable security deposit is held separately on your card before pickup, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV, and released after drop-off once the host confirms the rig came back in good shape. To avoid issues, do a thorough walkthrough at pickup, take time-stamped photos inside and out, and report any pre-existing wear right then. That's it, you are cleared for your Arkport RV rental.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow do I handle cold weather if I rent an RV in Arkport in the shoulder season?
Shoulder-season RV camping Arkport is gorgeous, you just want a rig built for it. Late September through October nights regularly dip into the 30s and 40s F, and early May can still surprise you with frost in the Genesee Valley. Look for RVezy listings that mention heated holding tanks, propane furnace, and the ability to plug into 30-amp or 50-amp shore power at Sun Valley Campsites (Stony Brook State Park has no electric hookups, so plan to run furnace off propane there). Pro tip: ask your host about winterization timing, most local rigs go offline mid-October, so book a fall foliage Finger Lakes RV trip early.
