Campgrounds near Armonk
Armonk sits in northern Westchester County, roughly an hour north of Manhattan and within reach of two very different camping worlds: the forested Hudson Highlands to the north and west, and the urban waterfront parks of the New York City metro area to the south. RV travelers use the town as a launch point for weekend trips into the Taconic and Ramapo ranges or as a staging area for sightseeing in the city.
The closest developed state campground is Pelton Pond - Clarence Fahnestock State Park in Putnam County, a facility set along natural rock ridges with tent, trailer, and RV sites. Farther west across the Hudson, Beaver Pond Campground - Harriman State Park adjoins Lake Welch and offers platform and ground sites for tents plus limited trailer accommodations. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc, a family-run campground in Dutchess County, adds a private-lake option.
For city-access trips, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City provides hookups within sight of the Manhattan skyline, and Floyd Bennett Field - Gateway National Recreational Area operates a National Park Service campground in Brooklyn.
Things to do near Armonk
Fahnestock and Harriman are the region's outdoor anchors. Harriman covers 46,000 acres and the Appalachian Trail runs its length, with lakes, hiking trails, and swimming beaches at Lake Welch and Lake Tiorati. Canopus Lake at Fahnestock has a sandy beach, and rowboats and kayaks are available for rental.
Fishing is strong at both parks, with bass, pickerel, perch, and stocked trout available. Families based near Beaver Pond can swim at Lake Welch when lifeguards are on duty. Cyclists and history buffs staying at Floyd Bennett Field have access to biking paths, historic hangars, and the adjacent Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge.
Urban day trips are the point of Liberty Harbor: the PATH train, light rail, and NY Waterway ferries put lower Manhattan within a short ride, with Liberty State Park and the Statue of Liberty ferries nearby.
