Camping near Averill Park, New York
Averill Park sits in eastern Rensselaer County, in the hills between Albany, Troy, and the Massachusetts border. The area is dotted with small ponds, hardwood forest, and short mountain ridges, and it functions as a quiet camping base within easy reach of the Capital Region and the western Berkshires.
Private RV parks handle most of the demand. Alps Family Campground Inc sits on NY Route 43 between Averill Park and Stephentown, offering pull-through and back-in RV sites plus tent sites, with water and electric at every site and sewer hookups at some. Broken Wheel Campground and Privacy Campground add nearby options, and Adventure Bound Deer Run, a larger resort with a splash park and several hundred sites, is a short drive north near Schaghticoke.
For a state park option, Cherry Plain State Park lies about a half-hour southeast on NYS Route 22. Its thirty campsites, sandy beach, and boat launch on Black River Pond make it the closest public campground for travelers who prefer a rustic New York State Parks experience over a private resort.
Things to do around Averill Park
Days fill up fast with water and trail time. Cherry Plain State Park has a swimming beach on Black River Pond, rowboat and paddle-boat rentals, and fishing for bass, bullheads, and pickerel. A trail from the main parking lot leads to a historic Charcoal Kiln Site, and the park connects into the surrounding Capital District Wildlife Management Area, which adds thousands of acres of forest for hiking, biking, and wildlife watching.
Grafton Lakes State Park, Pittsfield State Forest, and Mount Greylock State Reservation are all within a short drive for longer hikes and mountain views. Families staying at Adventure Bound Deer Run have on-site draws including Pirate's Cove splash water park, heated pools, and the Adventure Bound Express trackless train. Albany, Troy, and Saratoga Springs are close enough for a day trip focused on museums, minor-league baseball, or the summer racing season.

The camping season in the Averill Park area is tightly compressed. Alps Family Campground runs May 1 through October 15, and Adventure Bound Deer Run operates mid-April through mid-October. Cherry Plain State Park opens for camping on Memorial Day weekend and closes after Labor Day, running Fridays and weekends only until the last weekend in June, then daily through the end of the season.
July and August are peak. Days average in the high 70s to low 80s Fahrenheit, thunderstorms are common, and popular sites, especially lakeside ones at Cherry Plain, book out well ahead. Late June and the week after Labor Day are quieter windows with similar weather.
Spring and fall bring wide temperature swings. May and September are pleasant for hiking and paddling, but nights can drop into the 30s and 40s. Foliage color typically peaks in early to mid-October. Winter is cold and snowy across the Taconic hills; state park roads and private campgrounds are closed for camping, though Cherry Plain's trails stay open for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

We had a great experience renting from Krystal and her husband. They were responsive, helpful, and very accommodating from start to finish. The camper was a perfect solution for hosting our out-of-town guests and provided the extra space we needed. We would gladly rent from them again in the future.

How to book campsites in the area
Cherry Plain State Park uses the New York State Parks reservation system on ReserveAmerica. Campsites can be booked up to nine months in advance, same-day reservations are accepted until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival, and walk-ins are permitted for campsites only. Reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica call center at 1-800-456-2267.
Private parks handle their own bookings. Alps Family Campground requires advance reservations and is contacted directly through its office. Adventure Bound Deer Run books through its own website and reservation line, with early booking recommended for holiday weekends, Saratoga's racing season, and Halloween events. Broken Wheel Campground and Privacy Campground take reservations directly by phone. For any July or August weekend, plan to book several weeks out, and longer for larger rigs needing full hookups.
What to expect on the ground
Expect a mix of rustic state-park camping and older, family-run private parks rather than polished resorts. Cherry Plain has thirty sites split evenly among trailer, lakeside tent, and hike-in tent options, with modern restrooms, hot showers, fire rings, and no lifeguarded swimming at the beach. Cell coverage in the Taconic hills can be spotty.
Alps Family Campground offers wooded and open sites with water and electric, some with sewer, plus a heated pool, laundry, and a large seasonal community, with room for rigs up to about 65 feet. Adventure Bound Deer Run has full-hookup sites and pull-throughs sized for big rigs after its recent expansion, plus cabins.
Come prepared for mosquitoes and ticks in wooded areas, bring layers for cool nights even in summer, and confirm pet rules on arrival, since state parks require current proof of rabies vaccination at check-in.

parks.ny.gov/parks/When is the best time to take an RV trip from Averill Park?

Late May through mid-June brings 65 to 78 degree days, blooming trails, and quieter campgrounds. July and August are the warmest (typically 75 to 85 degrees) and best for swimming at Grafton Lakes. But the local secret is late September through mid-October: fall foliage on the Rensselaer Plateau is spectacular, daytime temps sit in the comfortable 55 to 70 degree range, and nights are perfect for campfires. Most campgrounds open May 1 and close mid-October. Pro tip: book your fall foliage RV well before Labor Day, it's the single busiest stretch of the year.
weather.gov/aly/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You're going to do great. First time renting an RV is something Averill Park hosts handle every week, and every RVezy booking includes a hands-on orientation at pickup where your host walks you through driving, the propane system, the awning, slide-outs, water, the generator, and dumping. You can also message the host with questions before you book. Many guests start with a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer because they drive much like a large van. If you're nervous about backing into a site, choose a host who offers delivery so the rig is parked and leveled for you. Pro tip: do a short practice drive on Route 43 before heading to the highway.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Averill Park RV rental into Vermont, Massachusetts, or Canada?
Crossing state lines is totally normal for an RV road trip from Averill Park. You are under an hour from the Vermont border via Route 7 and about 40 minutes from the Massachusetts Berkshires via Route 43, and travel within the United States is typically covered on RVezy rentals. Travel into Canada depends on the host's insurance and approval, so message the host directly before booking to confirm and get any paperwork sorted in advance. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Popular cross-border loops include Lake Champlain in Vermont, the White Mountains in New Hampshire, and the Adirondacks. Pro tip: keep your rental agreement in the glove box at all times.

Planning your fuel budget is straightforward. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon, Class C motorhomes get 10 to 14 mpg, Class A coaches run 7 to 10 mpg, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (usually 10 to 14 mpg loaded). Gas prices in the Capital Region typically sit a bit below the New York state average, with stations in Troy, East Greenbush, and Brunswick offering competitive pricing. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop from Averill Park to Lake George and back in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $130 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Rensselaer County before heading into Vermont or Massachusetts, where prices often run higher.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Averill Park?
For the best campgrounds near Averill Park, earlier is always better. New York State Parks like Grafton Lakes, Cherry Plain, and Thompson's Lake open reservations 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and prime summer weekends (Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day) often fill the same week they open. Fall foliage weekends in late September and early October sell out almost as fast. Private parks like Alps Family Campground on Route 43 take direct bookings and tend to have more weekday flexibility. If you're booking last-minute, try Sunday-through-Thursday stays or look at private RV parks just over the Vermont and Massachusetts borders. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for the 9-month reservation opening for your dream weekend.

Watch for deer at dawn and dusk, especially along Burden Lake Road, and use lower gears descending into Troy on Route 66. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March, so most RV trips run April to October. Pro tip: avoid driving through downtown Troy and Albany during weekday rush hours; take I-90 or Route 4 instead.

You can dump tanks for free at most state parks if you're staying overnight, or for a small fee as a day-use visitor. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Averill%20Park%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book your campervan rental in Averill Park or any other RV through RVezy, you pay through the platform with a credit or debit card, no cash exchanged with the host. A refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig) and released after drop-off once the host confirms everything is in good shape. To avoid any deductions, do a thorough pre-trip walk-around with the host, take date-stamped photos, and return the RV with the agreed fuel and propane levels. Pro tip: keep gas and dump-station receipts as easy proof everything was done right.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksHow should I prepare for cold weather or shoulder-season RV camping near Averill Park?
Shoulder-season camping around Averill Park is genuinely beautiful, and a little prep makes it cozy. Spring nights in April and May can drop to 35 degrees, and October nights often hit the low 30s, so look for an RV with a working propane furnace and, ideally, heated holding tanks (most Class C motorhomes on RVezy have both). Use the Filters to search for four-season or winter-ready listings, and confirm with the host that the water lines are insulated. Pack warm sleeping bags as backup, bring extra propane, and choose campgrounds with electric hookups like Grafton Lakes so you can run a small space heater. Pro tip: October foliage trips along Route 43 toward Stephentown are unforgettable, book early.
