Camping near Avoca, New York
Avoca sits in Steuben County in New York's Southern Tier, at the southern edge of the Finger Lakes region. The town is in the northern part of the county, northwest of Bath, New York. Interstate 86, Interstate 390 and New York State Route 415 pass through the town, giving RV travelers direct access to Bath, Hammondsport, and Keuka Lake to the north, plus Corning and the Chemung River valley to the east. The surrounding terrain is Allegheny Plateau country: rolling wooded hills, creek valleys, and small lakes rather than the deeper glacial lakes farther north.
Campgrounds in the immediate area range from small county-run recreation areas to full-service RV resorts. Lake Demmon Recreation Area is a wooded lakeside site near Bath. Nearby options include Campers Haven, Stetson's Tumble Hill Campground, and The Finger Lakes Campground, while the Hammondsport / Bath KOA Resort provides the largest slate of hookups and amenities.
Most RV travelers use Avoca as a base for Keuka Lake, Watkins Glen State Park, the Corning Museum of Glass, and the Seneca Lake wine trail, all within roughly a one-hour drive.
Things to do around Avoca
Waterfalls and gorge hiking anchor the region. Watkins Glen State Park sits at the southern tip of Seneca Lake, where Glen Creek drops through a narrow gorge past a series of waterfalls. Stony Brook State Park to the northwest and Letchworth State Park farther west are both within reach for day trips.
On the water, Keuka Lake offers swimming, boat launches, and fishing for trout, bass, and landlocked salmon. Catherine Creek near Watkins Glen is known for its spring rainbow trout run. Families often base at the Hammondsport / Bath KOA Resort for on-site pool time between excursions.
Off the trail, the Corning Museum of Glass, the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport, and the Seneca Lake and Keuka Lake wine trails fill rainy-day itineraries.

The camping season in this part of New York is short and weather-driven. Most private and public campgrounds open in mid to late April and close by mid to late October, tracking freeze risk on water lines. A late-April to late-October window is typical for area RV parks, including the Hammondsport / Bath KOA Resort.
July and August are peak. Weekends at Watkins Glen, Keuka Lake State Park, and the KOA book out early, and holiday weekends around Memorial Day, July 4, and Labor Day can be full months in advance. Late June and early September tend to be the sweet spots for RV travelers who want warm days without the crowd density.
Fall brings foliage from late September through mid October, with cool nights that can drop below freezing. Winter camping is not practical at these campgrounds: water lines are shut off, and most gates stay closed until spring.

How to book campgrounds near Avoca
New York State Parks and DEC campgrounds are booked through a single system. All reservations must be made using the ReserveAmerica system. You can get detailed information or make a reservation for any campground. By phone, call Reserve America at 1-800-456-CAMP (1-800-456-2267). Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance. For popular Finger Lakes parks, plan to book the day the nine-month window opens.
Private campgrounds book directly. The Hammondsport / Bath KOA Resort takes reservations by phone or through the KOA website, and smaller operators such as Campers Haven, Stetson's Tumble Hill Campground, and The Finger Lakes Campground typically accept phone or online bookings.
Campsites only: same-day reservations are allowed until 3PM on the day of arrival, which is useful for flexible midweek trips.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near Avoca lean rural and wooded. Expect gravel or grass pads, tree cover, and some sloped terrain typical of the Allegheny Plateau. Big-rig access is easiest at the Hammondsport / Bath KOA Resort, which sits off I-86 and handles longer trailers and fifth-wheels without tight turns.
Hookups vary. Full 50-amp service with sewer is common at the KOA; state park and smaller private sites more often offer 30-amp electric and water, with a shared dump station on exit. Verify hookup details with each operator before booking.
Cell coverage is generally solid along the I-86 corridor and weakens in the surrounding hills. Bears are uncommon but present, so standard food storage rules apply. Firewood must be sourced locally to comply with New York's untreated-firewood restrictions.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Avoca, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Avoca, NY?
Good news: an RV rental in Avoca, NY is genuinely affordable compared to coastal markets. Travel trailers typically run $75 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A rigs land between $250 and $400 per night. Summer weekends (especially during Watkins Glen race events just 45 minutes east) and fall foliage season in October are the priciest windows. To score a cheap RV rental Avoca, NY, book midweek in late May or early September, look for hosts offering weekly discounts, and use the price filter on RVezy to sort listings. Pro tip: Avoca sits at the I-86 and Route 415 junction, so you can stay here cheaply and day-trip into pricier Finger Lakes hotspots.
visitsteubencounty.com/What license do I need to rent an RV in Avoca, NY?
Great news for first-time renters: a regular New York or out-of-state driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Avoca, NY. New York State does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for motorhomes or travel trailers used recreationally. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your identity is verified securely through the platform during checkout. Visiting from overseas to explore the Finger Lakes? Pick up an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before you fly, and you are set.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my RV rental in Avoca protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road around Avoca with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level (not the host) during checkout, picking the option that fits your comfort level and budget, and the plan covers eligible physical damage to the RV during your trip. While this is not traditional auto insurance, it provides substantial financial protection if the unexpected happens, whether that is a fender bump in a parking lot in nearby Bath or a windshield chip on Route 17. Pair that with RVezy's customer support team and you have backup from booking to drop-off.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Avoca RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy, and every reservation comes with a money-back grace period right after you book, so you can lock in your dates without second-guessing. After that window, refund eligibility depends on how far out you cancel from your trip start date. Full, current details live in the RVezy Help Center and your booking confirmation. Pro tip: book early for July weekends and Watkins Glen race dates, because cancellations are rare and inventory tightens fast in Steuben County.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Avoca RV trip?
Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental Avoca, NY is easy to find. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see listings from hosts who welcome dogs (and sometimes cats) with clear pet policies and any small cleaning fee spelled out upfront. The Finger Lakes region is one of the most dog-friendly corners of the state: Stony Brook State Park (15 minutes north in Dansville) allows leashed pets on trails and at campsites, and Watkins Glen State Park permits pets on most trails outside the gorge. Hammondsport's lakeside parks and many Keuka Lake wineries have outdoor patios that welcome well-behaved pups. Message the host before booking if you want to confirm specifics for your pet.
parks.ny.gov/recreation/pets/default.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground near Avoca?
Yes, RV delivery in Avoca, NY is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-time renters who would rather skip driving a big rig. Many local hosts will deliver and set up the RV at popular spots like Kanakadea Park in Hornell, Stony Brook State Park in Dansville, or a private property within Steuben County, then walk you through every system before they leave. Delivery fees are typically a flat rate plus a per-mile charge beyond a set free radius. Use the Delivery filter when browsing, and message the host with your campsite number. It is the easiest way to start your Avoca RV trip stress-free.
parks.ny.gov/parks/stonybrookHow far can I drive on my Avoca RV rental, and what about mileage limits?
You've got plenty of road ahead of you. Hosts set their own mileage policies, and on RVezy you'll see options ranging from 100 free miles per night up to RV rental with unlimited mileage, all displayed clearly on each listing before you book. From Avoca, you can reach Watkins Glen in about 45 minutes (35 miles), the Corning Museum of Glass in 30 minutes (25 miles), Letchworth State Park in 1 hour (50 miles), Niagara Falls in about 2.5 hours (140 miles), and the Adirondacks in roughly 4 hours. Pro tip: if you're planning a big loop through the Finger Lakes and beyond, filter for unlimited-mileage listings to keep your budget predictable.
dot.ny.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Avoca, NY?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Avoca, NY include Stony Brook State Park in Dansville (about 15 minutes north, gorgeous gorge trails and waterfalls, electric and non-electric sites), Kanakadea Park in Hornell (25 minutes west, lakeside on the Almond Reservoir, run by Steuben County), Hickory Hill Family Camping Resort in Bath (15 minutes south, full hookups and a pool), and Keuka Lake State Park in Bluff Point (45 minutes northeast, lakefront RV sites). Watkins Glen State Park Campground (about an hour east) is the regional showstopper with 19 waterfalls steps from your site. Reserve New York State Parks early through ReserveAmerica's NY portal, especially for July and August weekends.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time to plan an RV trip from Avoca?
The sweet spot for RV camping Avoca, NY is mid-May through mid-October, when state park campgrounds are fully open and the weather plays nice. Summer (June-August) averages 75 to 82°F highs with warm nights perfect for screen-house dinners. Late September through mid-October is the local insider favorite: Finger Lakes fall foliage peaks around Columbus Day, wineries are pouring new releases, and crowds thin out noticeably. Spring (April-May) is cooler (50s-60s) and a bargain, while winter brings serious snow (Avoca averages 70+ inches per year), so winter rentals are limited and best suited to four-season rigs. Book your shoulder-season weekends 6 to 8 weeks ahead for the best selection.
weather.gov/bgm/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You're going to do great. First time renting an RV in Avoca is genuinely beginner-friendly: Route 415 and I-86 (the Southern Tier Expressway) are wide, well-maintained, and lightly trafficked compared to downstate highways. Every host on RVezy provides a hands-on walkthrough at pickup, covering driving, leveling, hookups, slide-outs, and the propane and electrical systems before you leave the driveway. If you'd rather skip driving altogether, choose a host who offers delivery and setup. Pro tip: pick a smaller Class C motorhome or campervan rental Avoca for your first trip, stick to daylight driving, and avoid the steep grades on Route 53 toward Prattsburgh until you've got a few miles under your belt.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-manuals/drivers-manualWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 17, a dead battery at Kanakadea Park, or a tow situation outside Bath is one phone call away from help. Your host is also typically reachable by phone or in-app message and knows the rig better than anyone, so for minor questions (how to reset the GFCI, why the water pump is not priming) they are often your fastest fix. RVezy's customer support team backs everything up. Save the roadside number in your phone before you leave Avoca and you will never feel stranded.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Avoca RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Avoca across the Northeast is one of the best ways to use your rental. Pennsylvania is just 35 miles south, and many guests loop through the Pocono Mountains, head east to the Catskills (3 hours), or push north to the Adirondacks and Lake Placid (4.5 hours). Canada trips (Niagara Falls Ontario, Toronto, Montreal) may be allowed depending on the specific host and their insurance, so message the host directly before booking to confirm cross-border permission and bring your passport. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals. Pro tip: from Avoca, the Niagara Falls border crossing is about 3 hours via I-390 and I-90.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on an Avoca RV trip?
Fuel is the biggest variable, but it's predictable once you know your rig. Campervans and Class B motorhomes average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes 10 to 14 mpg, travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 9 to 13 mpg combined), and Class A motorhomes 7 to 10 mpg. New York gas prices in the Southern Tier typically run a bit higher than the national average, with stations in Bath, Hornell, and Painted Post being your cheapest local fill-ups; avoid topping off near Watkins Glen during race weekends. For a 5-day Finger Lakes loop of roughly 400 miles in a Class C, budget $180 to $250 in fuel. Pro tip: GasBuddy works great across rural NY.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Avoca?
Book early and you will get exactly the site you want. New York State Park campgrounds (Stony Brook, Watkins Glen, Keuka Lake, Letchworth) open reservations up to 9 months in advance through the New York State Parks reservation system, and prime summer weekends, holiday weeks, and fall foliage Saturdays fill quickly. Steuben County's Kanakadea Park takes reservations through the county parks office. Private parks like Hickory Hill in Bath usually have more flexibility 2 to 4 weeks out. For a spontaneous Avoca RV trip, weekday sites are almost always available. Pro tip: lock in your campground before you book the RV so dates line up perfectly.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are local driving conditions like around Avoca?
Driving around Avoca is refreshingly easy. I-86/Route 17 is a wide, modern interstate-grade highway running east-west right past town, and Route 415 connects you to Bath and Hammondsport with gentle terrain. The biggest things to know: hilly rural roads like Route 53 toward Prattsburgh and the back routes to Keuka Lake have steeper grades (use lower gears descending), deer are genuinely common at dawn and dusk so slow down in wooded stretches, and winter brings lake-effect snow squalls from late November through March that can drop visibility fast. Summer construction zones pop up on I-86, so check 511NY before you roll. Stick to daylight driving your first day and you'll feel right at home.
511ny.org/What hookups and amenities will I find at campgrounds near Avoca?
You'll find a great mix. Private RV parks like Hickory Hill Family Camping Resort in Bath and Hidden Valley Campground typically offer full hookups (water, 30/50-amp electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, pools, and dump stations on-site. New York State Parks (Stony Brook, Keuka Lake, Watkins Glen) generally provide electric hookups at most sites but no individual sewer, with centralized dump stations and potable water fill stations near the entrance. Kanakadea Park in Hornell has electric and water sites plus showers. Most campgrounds have laundry and camp stores. Pro tip: if you're booking a non-hookup site, ask your RVezy host whether the RV's generator is included so you can run AC and microwave off-grid during your stay.
parks.ny.gov/camping/rv-trailer-sites.aspxWhat's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Avoca?
More than you'd expect. A typical motorhome rental Avoca comes fully equipped: a real bed (or two or three), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, sink, and cookware, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (roof AC and furnace), and seatbelted seating for travel. Many listings include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning with lights, leveling jacks, and a generator or solar setup for boondocking. Wi-Fi is hit or miss in rural Steuben County regardless of your rig, but cell service on Verizon and AT&T is solid along I-86. Each RVezy listing has a detailed amenity checklist and photos, so you'll know exactly what you're getting before you book.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/rvsWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in the Avoca area offer thoughtful extras that make your trip easier. Common add-ons include kitchen and linen packages (usually $50 to $100 flat), camping chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, generators, propane refills, portable grills, and pet packages. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Avoca, Bath, Hornell, or Corning, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough covering every system. Many hosts also offer RV delivery to local campgrounds for a flat fee plus mileage beyond a free radius. Mileage policies are listed up front, ranging from per-night caps to unlimited mileage. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a linen package on your first booking and you'll arrive to a fully set-up site with nothing to unpack but groceries.
tax.ny.gov/bus/st/rvrental.htmHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely through the RVezy platform, so you never hand cash or a check to the host. When you book, you pay the rental total (nightly rate, fees, taxes, your chosen protection plan) via credit card, and a refundable security deposit is pre-authorized on your card before pickup, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV. The security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and is released after drop-off, assuming the RV comes back in the condition it left in with the agreed mileage and generator hours. To avoid issues: take date-stamped photos at pickup and drop-off, return with the same fuel and propane levels, and dump tanks where required.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Avoca?
You're sitting in the middle of one of the best RV regions in the Northeast. Top picks for an RV road trip from Avoca: Watkins Glen and Seneca Lake wineries (45 minutes, 35 miles) for waterfalls and Riesling, Corning Museum of Glass and Hammondsport on Keuka Lake (30 to 45 minutes), Letchworth State Park, the Grand Canyon of the East (1 hour, 50 miles), Niagara Falls (2.5 hours, 140 miles), the Adirondack High Peaks (4.5 hours), and the Pennsylvania Wilds for stargazing at Cherry Springs State Park (2 hours south). Local insider tip: time your trip with the Watkins Glen NASCAR or IMSA race weekends in August for one of the most electric atmospheres in motorsports, just don't try to book a campsite the week of.
