Campgrounds and RV parks near Balmville, NY

Outdoor recreation is the main draw. Clarence Fahnestock is a haven for hikers with over 50 miles of trails ranging from easy walks to more strenuous hikes, with views across forests, lakes, and mountains. Canopus Lake has a sandy beach with designated swimming areas in summer, and rowboats and kayaks are available for rent. Fishing in Canopus and Stillwater Lakes is productive for bass, pickerel, perch, and trout. Harriman offers a different scale, with hundreds of miles of hiking trails, 31 lakes and reservoirs, and two swimming beaches at Lake Welch and Lake Tiorati. Portions of the Appalachian Trail cross the park. Off-park, families can reach West Point, Storm King Art Center, the Walkway Over the Hudson, and Hudson Valley wineries and orchards within a short drive. The Newburgh waterfront adds restaurants and Hudson River cruises.

The camping season in this part of the Hudson Valley is tightly seasonal. State-park campgrounds typically open in mid to late spring and close in early to mid October. Beaver Pond at Harriman generally opens in mid to late April for walk-in camping only, then runs a regular reservation season from early May through mid October. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock has historically run from mid May through early November, but travelers should confirm current status directly with the park before planning, since the campground has been closed to allow construction of a new bathhouse. Summer weekends fill fast. Booking early is essential for peak summer weekends and holiday periods, when sites can fill up quickly, and Harriman in particular is a favored weekend getaway for New York City residents. Private resorts run longer seasons. The Newburgh KOA is generally open from spring through late fall, and Jellystone Park at Lazy River operates from early spring through mid October. Fall brings foliage and cooler nights, with peak color typically in October. Winter camping options in the area are very limited.

Hookups vary sharply by property. The New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday offers full and partial hookup sites that are big-rig friendly, with pull-throughs and amenities including pools, a jumping pillow, and a camp store. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River adds a water park, lazy river, and cabin options aimed at families with young kids. Sylvan Lake Beach Park offers waterfront RV sites with hookups. State-park sites are more rustic. Beaver Pond has 125 campsites for up to two tents and six people per site, with select sites for trailers or RVs up to 30 feet, picnic tables and fire rings with flip-top grills, full-service bathrooms with showers and laundry, and a dump station, but no electrical hookups. Alcohol and pets are not permitted at Beaver Pond. Pelton Pond similarly has no hookups and caps RV length around 40 feet. Black bears inhabit the Harriman and Bear Mountain area, so food should be stored securely. Insect repellent for deer ticks is recommended in warmer months.
