Campgrounds near Bayport, New York
Bayport sits on the south shore of Long Island in Suffolk County, tucked between the Great South Bay and the wooded state parks of central Long Island. The location gives RV travellers access to both bayfront and Long Island Sound camping, plus a short ferry hop to a barrier-island national seashore.
The closest developed campground is Heckscher State Park, whose 1,600 acres on the south shore of Long Island offer shady picnic groves, large open fields, four miles of paved multi-use trails, and stunning views of the Great South Bay with Fire Island as the backdrop. Across the bay, Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island's eastern end sits close to the beach, bay, and Otis Pike Wilderness, with sand tent sites and safari (glamping) tents reached by private boat or the Watch Hill Ferry from Patchogue. Wildwood State Park sits on the north shore along Long Island Sound with wooded bluff-top sites.
Farther afield, RV travellers can reach Totoket Valley RV Park in Connecticut and Kettletown State Park on the shore of Lake Zoar, both a ferry or bridge ride away for a change of scenery from the Long Island coast.
Things to do near Bayport
Water activities anchor most trips. Heckscher State Park draws visitors for bay swimming at West Beach, boat launches, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, and paddleboarding, and four miles of paved multi-use trails wind through the park for hiking and biking. Families often pair a day at the park with beach time on Fire Island.
At Watch Hill, the appeal is a car-free barrier island. The campground sits on the western edge of the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness, the only federally designated wilderness area in New York State, with a lifeguarded ocean beach, a marina, and nature trails.
Wildwood State Park offers Sound-side swimming and bluff trails, while Kettletown State Park adds freshwater swimming and hiking along Lake Zoar. Totoket Valley RV Park is a base for exploring the Connecticut shoreline.

Camping on Long Island runs on a compressed season. Heckscher's campgrounds reopen 5/22 through 9/6, with reservations through Reserve America, and most nearby New York state park campgrounds follow a similar late-May to early-September window. Watch Hill sites are typically available from mid-May weekend to mid-October, and the campground is operated by concessioner LoveFINS, giving shoulder-season options on the barrier island.
Summer is peak. July and August book out quickly on weekends, and Watch Hill applies longer minimum stays in high season, so weekend visits generally require multi-night bookings.
Spring brings mild days and cool nights, ideal for lighter crowds but with cold bay water. Fall offers crisp weather and fewer bugs into October. Winter closes most campgrounds, and Atlantic storms and nor'easters can affect ferry service to Fire Island.

We rented this RV from August 21–25, and from beginning to end, we had an absolutely wonderful experience. Charlie and Margaret were amazing hosts! Their communication was excellent, and they were always helpful, friendly, responsive, and very professional. They truly made the entire experience easy and enjoyable. The RV itself was beautiful, modern, extremely clean, and very well maintained. As soon as we walked inside, we were impressed. The lighting throughout the RV was fantastic—there were plenty of lights, which made the space feel bright, comfortable, and welcoming. The bathroom was extremely clean and surprisingly spacious. The bedroom was large, comfortable, and cozy, with plenty of storage space for clothes and personal belongings. We never felt cramped at all. The kitchen was one of our favorite features. It was beautiful and spacious, with a long countertop that gave us plenty of room to prepare meals. Charlie and Margaret really thought of everything. The cabinets and drawers were stocked with pots, pans, plates, utensils, and everything else we needed. They even provided plenty of cleaning supplies, including a broom, vacuum, Lysol wipes, and more. What impressed us most was how much this RV truly felt like a home away from home. We had everything we needed—and honestly, even more than we expected. You can tell Charlie and Margaret put a lot of thought and care into making sure their guests are comfortable and have a great experience. Whether you’re going camping, attending an outdoor event, or simply looking for a comfortable RV getaway, I would highly recommend renting from Charlie and Margaret. Beautiful RV, outstanding hosts, excellent communication, and a five-star experience all around. Thank you, Charlie and Margaret, for helping make our trip so comfortable and memorable! We would absolutely rent from you again! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

How to book near Bayport
New York state park campgrounds use a single reservation system. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites becoming available at the 9-month window at set morning times, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites, reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. Heckscher and Wildwood both fall under this system.
Watch Hill is operated separately by a National Park Service concessioner. Campsites at the Watch Hill Family Tent Campground are available for a fee, with an online reservation system through LoveFINS.com. Book the Watch Hill Ferry from Patchogue at the same time, since access is by private boat or the seasonal ferry. Connecticut state parks such as Kettletown use the Reserve America platform under the Connecticut DEEP contract.
What to expect at Bayport campgrounds
Heckscher provides restrooms, showers, a dump station, and picnic tables at each site, with paved roads and RV-friendly loops close to the bay. Pets are not permitted at campsites or cottages, and maximum stay is 14 consecutive nights. Sites can be open and lightly shaded rather than deeply wooded.
Watch Hill is a different experience. RVs stay behind on the mainland: campers ferry over with gear and walk to sand tent pads. Camping is limited to 14 consecutive days, one member of the party must be at least 18, campfires are not allowed, and only charcoal can be burned in the designated grills or cooking done on a camp stove. Expect mosquitoes, ticks, and deer in the wilderness surroundings.
Wildwood and Kettletown offer wooded state-park camping with flush facilities, and Totoket Valley RV Park provides hookups typical of a private park.

You can message your host any time before or during the trip with questions. Many Bayport-area hosts specialize in beginners and offer smaller, easy-to-drive Class C motorhomes or campervans. Pro tip: choose delivery for your first trip to Heckscher State Park, you'll skip Long Island Expressway traffic and learn the systems while parked, not while driving.

help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Bayport RV rental to other states or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Bayport opens up the whole Northeast. New England is right next door: take the Bridgeport-Port Jefferson Ferry to Connecticut and you're 3 hours from Cape Cod, 4 from the White Mountains, or 6 from Acadia National Park in Maine. Pennsylvania Dutch Country and Washington D.C. are also within easy reach. Travel into Canada (think Niagara Falls or Montreal) may be allowed, but you must message the host first and confirm cross-border coverage before booking. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Pro tip: popular long-haul routes from Bayport include the Maine coast loop and the Adirondacks-Vermont circuit.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage and gas budget should I plan for?
Plan smart and fuel costs stay very manageable on a Bayport RV trip. Class C motorhomes typically get 8-12 mpg, Class A motorhomes 6-10 mpg, and campervans 14-20 mpg, while a tow vehicle pulling a travel trailer averages 10-14 mpg. New York gas prices on Long Island generally run slightly above the national average, so budgeting around $4.00-$4.50 per gallon is realistic. A weekend trip to Montauk and back (150 miles round-trip) in a Class C might cost $50-$75 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up off-island in Connecticut or upstate when possible, prices drop noticeably once you cross out of Nassau and Suffolk Counties, and Costco in Holbrook is consistently the cheapest local option.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Bayport?
Book early and you're golden, New York State Parks like Heckscher and Wildwood open campground reservations up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and prime South Shore summer weekends fill within hours of opening. For Suffolk County parks (Cathedral Pines, Smith Point, Blydenburgh), reservations go through the county's online system and a Green Key card helps a lot. Aim to book by February or March for July and August, and by April for shoulder-season trips. Pro tip: if you missed the window, watch for cancellations the week before your trip, holiday-weekend cancellations pop up surprisingly often, and weekday Sunday-through-Thursday stays are usually wide open even in peak season.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What are driving conditions like around Bayport with an RV?
Driving an RV around Bayport is very doable once you know the local quirks. Sunrise Highway (NY-27) and the Long Island Expressway (I-495) are your main arteries, both wide and RV-friendly, but Long Island's notorious parkways (Southern State, Northern State, Ocean, Sagtikos, Meadowbrook) are off-limits to commercial vehicles and most RVs due to low stone bridges, some as low as 7 feet. Stick to truck routes and you'll be fine. Summer Hamptons-bound traffic on Fridays heading east and Sundays heading west can be brutal, drive midweek or before 10am when possible. Pro tip: download a truck-routing GPS app like CoPilot or RV Life before you leave, standard GPS will route you onto banned parkways.

Most rigs include air conditioning, a heater/furnace, a propane system, and a generator or solar setup, essential for summer trips along the Great South Bay. Many hosts include linens, kitchenware, outdoor chairs, and a hose/electrical cord kit. Pro tip: filter listings by Sleeps count to match your group, and message hosts to confirm if Wi-Fi hotspots, TVs, or backup cameras are included, those small extras make a big difference on a family RV trip Bayport-style.

Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Bayport, Sayville, Patchogue, or Holbrook, with delivery available to most Suffolk County campgrounds for a distance-based fee. Mileage policies vary: some hosts offer 100-150 free miles per day, while others list RV rental with unlimited mileage, perfect for that Montauk-to-Manhattan loop. As long as you return the RV in the condition you received it, with no damages or policy violations, your deposit hold is released within a few days of trip end. Pro tip: take time-stamped photos of the RV at pickup and drop-off, it is the easiest way to keep your deposit return smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat's a great weekend RV road trip from Bayport?
An RV road trip from Bayport practically plans itself. A classic 3-day loop: head east on Sunrise Highway to Hither Hills State Park in Montauk (about 80 miles) for oceanfront camping and lighthouse views, then swing back through the Hamptons and Sag Harbor for sunset and seafood. For a North Fork wine-country trip, drive 45 miles to Wildwood State Park and tour Long Island wineries in Cutchogue and Greenport. Heading west? Take the ferry from Port Jefferson to Bridgeport and you're in coastal Connecticut in 90 minutes. Pro tip: book Hither Hills 9 months out through the New York State Parks reservation system, it's the most coveted campground on Long Island and sells out the morning reservations open.
