Campgrounds near Bedford, New York
Bedford sits in northern Westchester County, roughly an hour north of New York City in the Hudson Valley. RV renters use it as a base for state parks in Putnam and Rockland counties in New York and the Litchfield Hills in western Connecticut, all within a short drive.
The closest public campground is Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park, about 25 miles north on the Taconic State Parkway. Additional options within roughly an hour include Beaver Pond Campground at Harriman State Park to the west, Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc in Hopewell Junction to the north, and Kettletown State Park and Lake Waramaug State Park Campground across the Connecticut line to the east.
Sites in this region range from primitive tent-and-trailer loops with shared bathhouses to private parks offering full hookups. Rig-length limits apply at every state park, so RV renters should confirm site dimensions before booking.
Things to do near Bedford
Hiking is the main draw. Harriman State Park is the second-largest state park in the New York system and the Appalachian Trail runs its length across 46,000 acres. Clarence Fahnestock adds Canopus Lake with a sandy shore, excellent fishing for bass, pickerel, perch, and brook or rainbow trout, and rowboat and kayak rentals.
Water activities dominate summer plans. Lake Waramaug is known for swimming, paddling, and fall foliage reflected on the lake, and Kettletown fronts Lake Zoar, a reservoir on the Housatonic River and the fifth largest freshwater body in Connecticut. Nearby day trips include the Kent Falls area, Litchfield Hills wineries, and John Jay Homestead State Historic Site closer to Bedford.

At Beaver Pond, camping begins on the last Friday in April and the last night is the Sunday of Columbus Day weekend. Lake Waramaug typically runs from late May through Columbus Day weekend.
Travelers should confirm current-year status before booking. The Pelton Pond campground at Clarence Fahnestock is closed for the 2026 season to facilitate construction of a new bathhouse, and the Kettletown State Park Campground will remain closed for the 2026 and 2027 seasons due to flood damage from an August 2024 rainfall event.
Summer weekends and fall foliage weekends are the busiest periods and fill fastest. Winter is quiet: state park campgrounds are closed, though day-use areas at parks like Fahnestock stay open, and Fahnestock Winter Park offers about 15 kilometers of groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

How to book campgrounds near Bedford
New York state parks, including Beaver Pond at Harriman, allow reservations up to nine months in advance through ReserveAmerica. Same-day reservations for campsites are allowed until 3:00 PM on the arrival date, and walk-ins are permitted after 3:00 PM, subject to availability.
Connecticut state parks, including Lake Waramaug, also book through ReserveAmerica, typically up to eleven months in advance. Kettletown, Lake Waramaug, and several other Connecticut campgrounds are alcohol free during the camping season. Non-resident rates are higher than in-state rates.
Private parks like Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc book directly through the operator and often require multi-night minimums on holiday weekends.
What to expect at Bedford-area campgrounds
Expect wooded, hilly terrain and modest infrastructure. Beaver Pond accommodates trailers or RVs up to 30 feet on select sites, has no electrical hookups, and prohibits alcohol and pets. Lake Waramaug accepts back-in sites for smaller rigs and also bans alcohol in the campground during the season.
Cell service is often weak inside state park loops, and camp stores keep limited hours. Bathhouses with hot showers, dump stations, picnic tables, and fire rings are standard. Black bears and deer ticks are present throughout the Hudson Highlands and Harriman, so food storage and repellent are worth planning for.
Private parks like Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc offer full hookups and can accommodate larger rigs, with a mix of transient and seasonal sites.
