Campgrounds near Brentwood, New York
Brentwood sits in central Suffolk County on Long Island, within easy driving distance of both the Great South Bay and the Long Island Sound shorelines. RV renters based here have access to two very different camping environments: developed New York State Park campgrounds with drive-in sites, and ferry-access barrier-island camping on Fire Island National Seashore.
Heckscher State Park is the closest developed campground, sitting on the Great South Bay shoreline in East Islip. The campground accommodates both tent campers and RVs, with sites that can handle equipment up to about 50 feet on the larger loops. There are no electric, water, or sewer hookups at individual sites, but the park provides restrooms, showers, and a dump station. Wildwood State Park, on the north shore near Wading River, offers a much larger campground with electric and water hookups on select loops.
For renters willing to leave the RV parked, Watch Hill Campground on Fire Island is a tent and safari-tent campground reached by ferry from Patchogue. Kettletown State Park in western Connecticut and Floyd Bennett Field at Gateway National Recreation Area in Brooklyn round out the drive options within roughly two hours.
Things to do near Brentwood
At Heckscher State Park, families use the bay beaches, picnic groves, and paved trails. The park offers bay swimming, boat launches, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, and paddleboarding, with water activities running from March through November. Paved multi-use paths wind through the park for cycling and walking.
Wildwood State Park sits on a bluff over Long Island Sound with beach access, marked hiking trails, and cross-country skiing in winter. The 600-acre hardwood forest also supports fishing, biking, and picnicking.
Watch Hill offers a different pace. From May to mid-October, the area operates a visitor center, family campground, ranger-led interpretive programs, a transient marina with water, electric, and a pump-out station, a general store, snack bar, self-guiding nature trail, picnic area, lifeguarded beach in summer, restrooms, and bathhouse. Floyd Bennett Field adds urban-edge camping with Gateway NRA trails and shoreline access.

The Long Island camping season is compressed. Heckscher State Park campground typically opens in late May and closes in early September. Wildwood State Park runs a longer season, with the campground operating from April into October and cottages available into mid-October. On Fire Island, Watch Hill sites are available from a mid-May weekend through mid-October, operated by the concessioner LoveFINS.
Summer weekends are the tightest. Weekend bookings at both Heckscher and Wildwood fill quickly, and holiday weekends often go the day the nine-month window opens. Weekday availability holds up better, and shoulder-season trips in late May, early June, and September offer cooler nights and fewer crowds.
Winter closes the New York State Park campgrounds entirely. Late-fall and early-spring trips are possible at some inland Connecticut state parks, but freezing overnight temperatures, closed water systems, and limited services are typical. Tropical storm and nor'easter risk runs from late summer through fall; watch forecasts closely if traveling in September.

We rented this RV from August 21–25, and from beginning to end, we had an absolutely wonderful experience. Charlie and Margaret were amazing hosts! Their communication was excellent, and they were always helpful, friendly, responsive, and very professional. They truly made the entire experience easy and enjoyable. The RV itself was beautiful, modern, extremely clean, and very well maintained. As soon as we walked inside, we were impressed. The lighting throughout the RV was fantastic—there were plenty of lights, which made the space feel bright, comfortable, and welcoming. The bathroom was extremely clean and surprisingly spacious. The bedroom was large, comfortable, and cozy, with plenty of storage space for clothes and personal belongings. We never felt cramped at all. The kitchen was one of our favorite features. It was beautiful and spacious, with a long countertop that gave us plenty of room to prepare meals. Charlie and Margaret really thought of everything. The cabinets and drawers were stocked with pots, pans, plates, utensils, and everything else we needed. They even provided plenty of cleaning supplies, including a broom, vacuum, Lysol wipes, and more. What impressed us most was how much this RV truly felt like a home away from home. We had everything we needed—and honestly, even more than we expected. You can tell Charlie and Margaret put a lot of thought and care into making sure their guests are comfortable and have a great experience. Whether you’re going camping, attending an outdoor event, or simply looking for a comfortable RV getaway, I would highly recommend renting from Charlie and Margaret. Beautiful RV, outstanding hosts, excellent communication, and a five-star experience all around. Thank you, Charlie and Margaret, for helping make our trip so comfortable and memorable! We would absolutely rent from you again! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

How to book campgrounds near Brentwood
New York State Parks, including Heckscher and Wildwood, use ReserveAmerica. Campsite reservations can be made for the current day and up to 9 months in advance. Cottage reservations must be made at least 1 day ahead of arrival and can be made up to 9 months in advance. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. Bookings can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica call center at 1-800-456-2267.
Fire Island's family campground uses a separate system. Watch Hill family sites and safari-tent glamping are booked directly through the concessioner at LoveFINS.com, not through Recreation.gov. Wilderness and backcountry permits for the Otis Pike Fire Island High Dune Wilderness on the eastern end of Fire Island are booked through Recreation.gov.
What to expect at Brentwood-area campgrounds
Expect coastal conditions: humid summers, biting insects near the marshes, and salt air. New York State Park sites are close together with limited privacy, and pet rules are strict. Pets are not permitted at Heckscher campsites or cottages, and pets are not allowed in the Wildwood campground. Maximum stay is 14 consecutive nights.
Hookups are limited on Long Island. Heckscher has no electric, water, or sewer at sites but provides a dump station. Wildwood offers electric and water hookups on select loops, with the T loop able to accommodate rigs up to 50 feet. Fire rings vary; campfires must be in metal containers above ground, and containers can be brought from home or rented at the camp store during operating hours.
Watch Hill is tent and safari-tent only, reached by passenger ferry from Patchogue, so RV renters typically day-trip there and camp elsewhere overnight.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Brentwood, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Brentwood, NY?
RV rental in Brentwood is more affordable than you might expect for the New York metro area. Motorhomes near Brentwood typically range from about $175 to $275 per night, while towable trailers often run $95 to $150 per night, and many hosts offer 10 to 20 percent discounts on weekly and monthly bookings. For a cheap RV rental in Brentwood, look at travel trailers or smaller Class C motorhomes, book mid-week shoulder-season dates in May or late September, and filter by Instant Book to spot competitively priced listings fast. Pro tip: traveling out to the East End wineries on a Sunday-through-Thursday trip can shave hundreds off your total compared to a peak Hamptons weekend.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Brentwood,%20New%20YorkDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Brentwood, NY?
Good news: for nearly every RV rental in Brentwood you only need a standard Class D driver's license, no Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special endorsement required. New York only requires an R endorsement for personal recreational vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, and the vast majority of Class B campervans, Class C motorhomes, and travel trailers on RVezy fall well under that. RVezy approved drivers are generally 25 or older, and your ID is verified through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home country license along with an International Driving Permit from your local auto club before you fly in and you're set.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat protection is included when I rent an RV in Brentwood, NY?
Every RV rental in Brentwood booked through RVezy comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance included, so you can hit the Long Island Expressway with real peace of mind. The protection plan covers physical damage to the RV up to the plan's limits and is selected by you, the guest, during checkout. RVezy offers multiple protection tiers so you can pick the level of coverage that fits your trip, whether you're parking at Heckscher State Park for the weekend or doing a longer loop through the North Fork. It's robust coverage built specifically for peer-to-peer RV rentals, designed to take the worry out of your first motorhome rental in Brentwood.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat is the cancellation policy if my Brentwood RV trip plans change?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every rent-an-RV-in-Brentwood booking (not individual hosts), and there's a money-back grace period right after you book so you can lock in a great rig with confidence. Refund amounts after that grace window depend on how far in advance you cancel and on special circumstances like hurricanes or nor'easters, which Long Island does occasionally see in late summer and fall. If a tropical storm is forecast, reach out to RVezy support right away. Pro tip: book early for July and August Fire Island and Hamptons dates, since the most popular Brentwood-area RVs sell out months in advance.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Brentwood, NY?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Brentwood is easy to find. Just flip on the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see motorhomes and travel trailers whose hosts welcome dogs (and sometimes cats). Long Island is a great destination for pups: Heckscher State Park and Wildwood State Park both allow leashed pets at most campsites with proof of rabies vaccination, and Smith Point County Park has off-season dog-friendly beach access on Fire Island. Keep your dog on a 6-foot leash at New York State Parks and bring vaccination paperwork (metal tags alone aren't accepted). Message the host before booking to confirm any pet fees or breed notes.
parks.ny.gov/camping/things-to-knowCan the RV be delivered to my campground or home in Brentwood?
Yes, RV delivery in Brentwood is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-time renters who'd rather skip driving a big rig through Suffolk County traffic. Many Brentwood-area hosts will deliver the RV directly to Heckscher State Park, Battle Row Campground in Old Bethpage, your driveway, or even a Hamptons rental house, then handle setup and walk you through every system. Delivery fees are set by the host based on distance and RV size, and they're shown right on the listing. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on RVezy and message two or three hosts to compare quotes for your exact drop-off address.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Brentwood,%20New%20YorkHow far can I drive on a Brentwood RV trip, and what about mileage limits?
You've got serious range from Brentwood, and many hosts offer generous mileage packages, including RV rental with unlimited mileage on select listings. From Brentwood you can reach Montauk Point in about 90 minutes (roughly 75 miles east on Route 27), the Catskills in about 2.5 to 3 hours, Cape Cod in roughly 4.5 hours via the New London to Orient Point ferry, the Adirondacks in about 5 to 6 hours, and Niagara Falls in around 7 to 8 hours. Each listing shows the included daily miles and the per-mile overage rate up front. Pro tip: if you're planning a Brentwood RV road trip out to Vermont or upstate, ask the host about a weekly mileage bundle to save.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Brentwood,%20New%20YorkWhere can I stay overnight in an RV near Brentwood, NY?
You've got excellent campground options within a short drive of Brentwood. Heckscher State Park in East Islip (about 15 minutes south) sits near the Great South Bay with electric hookups. Battle Row Campground in Old Bethpage (about 25 minutes west) is a quiet Nassau County park with hookups. Wildwood State Park in Wading River (about 45 minutes east) offers 600 wooded acres above Long Island Sound. Cupsogue Beach and Smith Point County Park give you beachfront RV camping on the south shore, and Indian Island County Park in Riverhead is perfect for North Fork wine tours. Reserve New York state parks through ReserveAmerica up to 9 months ahead, and book Suffolk County parks directly through the county parks system.
parks.ny.gov/camping/When is the best time to rent an RV in Brentwood, NY?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping in Brentwood, with daytime highs ranging from the mid-60s in May to the mid-80s in July and August, then cooling to the 60s and 70s through September and early October. June and September are the smart-money choice: the Atlantic stays warm, mosquitoes ease up, campground rates drop, and you can actually get into Hamptons spots without months of advance booking. July and August are peak beach weather but also peak prices and traffic. Local insider tip: book a campervan rental in Brentwood for the first two weeks of October to catch North Fork harvest season at the vineyards.
weather.gov/okx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay renting in Brentwood?
You'll be in great hands, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering the generator, slide-outs, propane, water systems, and tank dumping, and most are happy to answer texts during your trip. For a first-timer in Brentwood, choose a Class C motorhome or travel trailer (easier to handle than a 35-foot Class A), and consider delivery so you don't have to drive it off the lot at all. Stick to truck-legal roads like the Long Island Expressway (I-495), Sunrise Highway (Route 27), and Routes 25 and 25A rather than the parkways, which prohibit RVs. Pro tip: do your first practice drive in a big lot like Tanger Outlets in Deer Park.
dmv.ny.gov/new-york-state-drivers-manual-practice-testsWhat happens if something goes wrong with my RV during the trip?
You're never on your own. Every RV rental in Brentwood NY includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, covering flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing if needed. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip if you hit a snag, whether you're stuck on the Long Island Expressway shoulder or boondocking out near Montauk. Your host is typically your fastest first call for quirks specific to their RV, like how the awning retracts or which switch runs the inverter. Pro tip: save the roadside number in your phone and snap a photo of the RV's VIN before you pull away at pickup.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Brentwood RV rental to other states or into Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Brentwood can absolutely cross state lines. New England is the classic route: you can reach Mystic, Connecticut in about 2 hours, Newport, Rhode Island in 3.5 hours, and the White Mountains in roughly 6. Travel into Canada (think Niagara Falls or Montreal) may be allowed when arranged in advance with your host, but you must confirm with the host before booking, bring a passport, and review RVezy's insurance coverage validity in advance. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: if you want a one-way trip or a multi-state loop, message hosts directly through the listing to ask about cross-border permissions.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on a Brentwood RV trip?
Fuel is very manageable if you plan ahead. Long Island gas prices typically run higher than the national average, so fill up just before crossing onto the Island or out near Riverhead where stations are often cheaper. Class B campervans get roughly 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes average 10 to 14 MPG, and bigger Class A rigs come in around 7 to 10 MPG. For a typical 3-day, 300-mile Brentwood RV trip in a Class C, plan on roughly $120 to $200 in gas depending on current prices. Pro tip: use GasBuddy and target stations along Route 25 or Sunrise Highway east of Brentwood, which are usually cheaper than south shore locations.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Brentwood, NY?
For New York State Parks like Heckscher and Wildwood, reserve through ReserveAmerica as early as possible: the booking window opens 9 months before your arrival date, and Long Island sites for July and August weekends fill within hours of opening. Suffolk County parks like Smith Point and Indian Island also book up fast for summer; reserve directly through the Suffolk County Parks website. For shoulder-season trips in May, September, or October you can often grab the best campgrounds near Brentwood with just 2 to 4 weeks notice. Pro tip: weekday arrivals (Sunday through Wednesday) almost always have availability at Battle Row Campground in Old Bethpage, even mid-summer.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions I should know about around Brentwood?
Here's the big one for any RV rental Brentwood NY trip: New York State parkways (Southern State, Northern State, Sagtikos, Wantagh, Meadowbrook, Ocean) are off-limits to commercial vehicles and RVs, with many bridges as low as 7 to 8 feet of clearance. Always stick to the Long Island Expressway (I-495), Sunrise Highway (Route 27), Route 25, and Route 25A. Traffic on the LIE eastbound is brutal Friday afternoons heading to the Hamptons and westbound Sunday evenings, so plan around those windows. Local insider tip: leave Brentwood by 6 a.m. on Friday or after 8 p.m. for an easier run east, and use Route 27 as your scenic, RV-legal alternative.
dot.ny.gov/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Brentwood, NY?
Most campgrounds near Brentwood are well-equipped for a comfortable RV stay. Heckscher State Park offers electric hookups, potable water fills, hot showers, restrooms, and a dump station; Wildwood State Park has electric sites, dumping stations, food concessions, and beachfront access on Long Island Sound; Battle Row Campground includes hookups, picnic tables, and sports fields. Smith Point County Park is more primitive with great ocean access. You can often dump tanks at state and county campgrounds for a small fee even if you're not camping there. Pro tip: fill your fresh water tank before leaving the host's location, since some Long Island campground spigots are seasonal and shut off after mid-October.
parks.ny.gov/camping/things-to-knowWhat's actually inside a typical Brentwood RV rental?
You'll be impressed by how complete these rigs are. A typical motorhome rental in Brentwood comes with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or bunk beds (sleeping 4 to 8 total), a full kitchen with fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace heat, a TV, and often a generator or solar setup for boondocking. Many listings include Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor speakers, and bike racks. Every motorized seat used while driving has a seatbelt. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps count and use the photos to confirm bathroom layout, since a wet bath versus dry bath makes a real difference on a family RV trip Brentwood-bound for a week.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Brentwood,%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and options can I get with my Brentwood RV rental?
Hosts offer a great range of add-ons to customize your trip. Popular extras on Brentwood RV rentals include bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, generator hours, bike racks, kayaks or paddleboards, outdoor chairs and tables, propane refills, and tank dumping/cleaning. Delivery and setup to spots like Heckscher State Park or your Hamptons rental driveway are also offered by most hosts, with fees based on distance. Pickup and drop-off times are set by the host and shown on the listing, typically late morning. Each listing also displays the included daily mileage and any per-mile overage rate. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a bedding kit so you literally show up and start vacation.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Brentwood,%20New%20YorkHow do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and secure. When you book an RV rental in Brentwood NY, you pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card; the host never handles your payment directly. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment, with the amount set per listing based on the RV's value, and it's released after the trip once the host confirms the rig was returned in good shape. To avoid issues, do a thorough pre-trip walkaround with the host, take date-stamped photos and video of the interior and exterior, and return the RV with the fuel and propane levels noted at pickup. Pro tip: keep all receipts for fuel and dump-station fees in case of any post-trip questions.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Brentwood in the winter, and how does cold-weather camping work?
Yes, winter RV rental in Brentwood is available and can be a genuinely cool adventure. Long Island winters are milder than upstate New York, with January highs typically in the high 30s to low 40s and occasional dips into the teens, so many Class C motorhomes with furnaces and heated holding tanks handle the season just fine. Filter for winterized or four-season RVs on RVezy and confirm with the host that the furnace, heated tanks, and propane are trip-ready. Most state park campgrounds close after Columbus Day, but you can still find off-season options at some Suffolk County locations and visit Montauk for dramatic winter beaches. Pro tip: ask the host for an electric space heater to supplement propane on the coldest nights.
