Campgrounds near Carmel Hamlet
Carmel Hamlet sits in Putnam County in New York's Hudson Highlands, roughly an hour north of New York City. The area works well as an RV base because several state park campgrounds ring the town within a short to moderate drive, spanning New York and neighboring Connecticut. Most nearby camping is inside public parks rather than commercial RV resorts, so expect wooded sites, basic hookups or none at all, and reservation systems run by state agencies.
The closest option, Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park, sits on wooded terrain near Canopus Lake, with every site equipped with a picnic table, fire ring, and charcoal grill. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc adds a private-park alternative just east of the hamlet. Farther afield, Macedonia Brook State Park and Lake Waramaug State Park Campground sit across the Connecticut line in Kent and New Preston, and Beaver Pond Campground anchors the vast Harriman State Park to the south.
Collectively these give RV renters a mix of lakefront, streamside, and ridge-top sites within an easy day's drive of Carmel Hamlet.
Things to do near Carmel Hamlet
Fahnestock State Park is the closest recreation hub. Canopus Lake, with its sandy shore and nearby picnic area, is the jewel of the park, and fishing in Stillwater and Canopus Lakes and in the park's four ponds is excellent for anglers seeking bass, pickerel, perch, or brook and rainbow trout, with rowboats and kayaks available for rental. A short trail loops Pelton Pond directly from the campground area.
At Harriman State Park to the south, more than 200 miles of trails range from easy to strenuous, and 31 lakes and two beaches support swimming, fishing, paddling, boating, ice fishing, and ice skating. Portions of the Appalachian Trail cross the park.
Across the state line, Macedonia Brook's more than 10 miles of trails include the Blue Trail across Cobble Mountain, with outstanding views of the Catskill and Taconic mountains that are especially striking in fall. Lake Waramaug adds swimming, paddling, and cycling on quiet lakeshore roads.

The camping season around Carmel Hamlet is short and tightly regulated by state agencies. Beaver Pond in Harriman typically runs from spring through mid-October. The Lake Waramaug camping season begins Memorial Day Weekend and ends Columbus Day. Macedonia Brook follows a similar late-spring to mid-October pattern, with reservations required and no walk-ins accepted.
A key planning note for the closest campground: Fahnestock's campground is closed for the 2026 season to facilitate the construction of a new bathhouse, though the group wilderness campground is open for the 2026 season. RV renters aiming for Pelton Pond should confirm reopening plans directly with the park before booking.
Summer weekends fill fastest, especially around holidays and during fall foliage in late September and October. Winter camping is generally not available at these public campgrounds, though day-use trails and cross-country skiing remain accessible at Fahnestock Winter Park and other nearby preserves.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

visitputnam.org/What license do I need to rent an RV in Carmel Hamlet?
Good news: a regular New York State (or any U.S./Canadian) driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Carmel Hamlet. There's no special RV endorsement, air-brake certification, or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required for the Class A, Class B, Class C motorhomes, travel trailers, and fifth wheels listed on RVezy. You just need to be 25 or older with a valid license, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the booking platform. Visiting from overseas? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association before you fly in and you're set. Most first-time renters are surprised at how quick the verification step is, usually a few minutes on your phone.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/get-driver-licenseWhat happens if I need to cancel my Carmel Hamlet RV rental?
Booking is low-risk, so plan with confidence. RVezy sets a single, platform-wide cancellation policy (hosts don't control it), which includes a money-back grace period right after booking so you can lock in your dates without second-guessing. If life happens, weather turns, or a Nor'easter rolls through the Hudson Valley, refund eligibility depends on how far out you are from your trip start and the circumstances. You'll see the exact terms during checkout and in your trip dashboard. Pro tip: book early to grab the best Putnam County RVs for summer weekends. The grace period gives you breathing room to confirm campground reservations at Fahnestock or nearby parks before fully committing.
dos.ny.gov/consumer-protectionCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Carmel Hamlet?
Absolutely, and you've got plenty of options. Many hosts offer pet-friendly RV rental in Carmel Hamlet, so just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see rigs that welcome your four-legged co-pilot. Local trails and parks are dog-friendly too: Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park allows leashed pets at campsites (with current rabies proof at check-in), and the Putnam County Veterans Memorial Park in Carmel has open green space for stretching legs. Bring a 6-foot leash, current vaccination records, and a few extra towels for muddy paws after a hike near Canopus Lake. Message the host before booking to mention your pet's size, breed, and shedding level so everyone starts the trip happy.
parks.ny.gov/parks/fahnestock/details.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campsite or driveway?
Yes, and it's the easiest way to start a trip. RV delivery in Carmel Hamlet is offered by many hosts on RVezy, meaning your motorhome or travel trailer arrives at your chosen campground, vacation rental, or even your driveway, fully set up and walked through by the host. Popular drop-off spots include Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park on Route 301, Croton Point Park along the Hudson, and the New York City North/Newburgh KOA Holiday. Filter listings by Delivery and message the host with your destination address to confirm range and fees. For first-time renters or anyone nervous about towing a fifth wheel through Putnam County's hilly roads, delivery is a game-changer.
parks.ny.gov/parks/fahnestock/details.aspxHow far can I drive, and is unlimited mileage available?
You have real flexibility for your Carmel Hamlet RV trip. Each host sets their own mileage policy, with daily allowances typically between 100 and 200 miles, and many offer RV rental with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for a road trip through the Hudson Valley, Catskills, or up to the Adirondacks. Carmel Hamlet is perfectly positioned: NYC is about 60 miles south, Cold Spring's antique shops sit just 15 miles west, Bear Mountain State Park is around 30 miles southwest, and the Catskills are roughly 90 miles north. Check the mileage box on each listing and message the host if you're planning a longer loop. Pro tip: filter for unlimited mileage if Vermont or Niagara Falls are on your itinerary.

You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Carmel Hamlet start with Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park on Route 301, just minutes away, with 80 wooded sites along natural rock ridges and beach access at Canopus Lake (note: the main campground is closed for the 2026 season for bathhouse construction, so book ahead). New York City North/Newburgh KOA Holiday, about 25 miles northwest, offers full hookups and family amenities. Black Bear RV Park in Florida, NY (around 40 miles west) is open year-round with full-service sites. Croton Point Park on the Hudson is roughly 20 miles south with lake-and-river views. parks.ny.gov/parks/fahnestock/details.aspxWhen is the best time of year to rent an RV in Carmel Hamlet?
Late spring through mid-October is the sweet spot for an RV trip from Carmel Hamlet, with the absolute peak being late September to mid-October when Hudson Valley fall foliage turns the hills brilliant orange and red. Summer (June through August) brings warm days in the high 70s to mid-80s°F and lively lake swimming at Canopus Lake. May and early June offer mild 60s°F weather and fewer crowds. Winters here are cold (often 20s°F with snow), but Fahnestock Winter Park's 20 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails make a winter campervan rental in Carmel Hamlet a magical adventure if your rig is winterized. Pro tip: book leaf-peeping weekends at least two months in advance.
weather.gov/okx/I've never rented an RV before. How do I know what to do?
You're in great hands, even if it's your first time renting an RV. Every RVezy host gives you a personal walkthrough at pickup (or at delivery), showing you how the propane, water, electrical hookups, slide-outs, leveling, and generator all work. You can also message any host before booking to ask questions about driving, parking, or the rig itself. For Carmel Hamlet first-timers, start with a Class C motorhome or travel trailer under 25 feet, which handles the area's winding back roads near Lake Mahopac and the Taconic State Parkway with ease. RVezy's 24/7 support line is just a tap away during your trip, and most hosts respond to texts within an hour.
dmv.ny.gov/What if something goes wrong with the RV on the road?
You're never alone out there. Every RV rental in Carmel Hamlet booked on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so a flat tire on Route 301, an overheated engine on the Taconic, or a tripped generator at Croton Point Park is handled with a single phone call. Roadside help dispatches tow, jump-start, lockout, and tire-change services. For mechanical questions, message your host directly through the RVezy app, they know their rig best. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after every trip. Pro tip: snap a photo of the rig's plate, VIN, and fuse panel at pickup so you have it ready if you ever need to call in.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repositoryCan I take my RV rental into Connecticut, Canada, or other states?
Yes, and Carmel Hamlet is a fantastic launchpad. You're 20 minutes from the Connecticut state line, two hours from Vermont, three hours from the Adirondacks, and about six and a half hours from the Canadian border at Champlain. Cross-state travel within the U.S. is generally allowed on RVezy bookings, and many hosts welcome trips into Canada with advance approval (just message them before booking to confirm and to verify cross-border protection coverage). Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals as insurance coverage doesn't extend there. Popular routes from Carmel Hamlet include the Hudson Valley wine trail, the Berkshires in Massachusetts, and a Lake Champlain loop. Always carry your rental agreement at border crossings.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on a Carmel Hamlet RV trip?
Fuel is one of the most predictable parts of your budget. Gas prices in Putnam County typically run a bit above the national average, hovering between $3.20 and $3.80 per gallon for regular unleaded. Travel trailers towed by SUVs get around 10 to 14 mpg, Class B campervans average 18 to 22 mpg, Class C motorhomes deliver 8 to 12 mpg, and large Class A coaches come in around 6 to 9 mpg. For a 300-mile weekend loop through the Hudson Valley in a Class C, plan on roughly $90 to $120 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in Brewster or Fishkill before heading north, as prices climb noticeably once you cross into the Catskills.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Carmel Hamlet?
Book sooner than you think, especially for summer and fall. New York State Parks like Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park accept reservations up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and prime summer weekends and October foliage dates often fill 3 to 6 months out. Private parks like the New York City North/Newburgh KOA and Black Bear RV Park book quickly for July 4th, Labor Day, and Columbus Day weekend. For midweek trips in May, June, or September, you can usually find spots 2 to 4 weeks ahead. Pro tip: same-day reservations at New York State Parks are accepted until 3 p.m. on day of arrival, which is a handy backup if your plans shift.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/clarence-fahnestock-state-park/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NY&parkId=409What are driving conditions like around Carmel Hamlet?
Driving here is straightforward once you know the local quirks. Carmel Hamlet sits along U.S. Route 6 and the scenic Taconic State Parkway, which is beautiful but important to know: commercial vehicles and trailers wider than 8 feet are restricted on the Taconic, so RV drivers towing fifth wheels should route via I-684 and I-84 instead. Local roads around Lake Mahopac and Lake Carmel are narrow and curvy with low-hanging branches, so larger Class A coaches benefit from sticking to main highways. Winter brings snow and occasional ice from December through March. Pro tip: check 511NY for real-time road conditions, and avoid the Bear Mountain Bridge approach during fall weekends when leaf-peeper traffic backs up for miles.
511ny.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Carmel Hamlet?
You'll find a wide range, from rustic state-park sites to full-hookup resorts. Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park offers picnic tables, fire rings, BBQ grills, hot showers, and flush toilets, but no electric hookups or dump station, so plan a dump-station stop on the way home. New York City North/Newburgh KOA and Black Bear RV Park offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, and camp stores. For fresh-water fills and dumping, the rest area at the Danbury Welcome Center (eastbound on I-84) just over the Connecticut border is a popular stop. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot freshwater hose and a 30-amp-to-50-amp adapter so you're ready for any site near Carmel Hamlet.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/campingWhat's typically included inside an RV rental in Carmel Hamlet?
You'll feel right at home. Most motorhome rentals in Carmel Hamlet come fully equipped with sleeping space for 4 to 8 people, a full kitchen (fridge, stove, microwave, sink, cookware), a wet or dry bathroom with a toilet and shower, climate control, and seatbelts for travel-ready seating. Many rigs include a TV, Bluetooth stereo, awning, outdoor chairs, and a propane grill. Generator-equipped Class A and Class C coaches let you run AC off-grid, while travel trailers usually rely on shore power. Wi-Fi hotspots are common as add-ons. Check each listing's amenities checklist and message the host with specific questions. Pro tip: ask whether linens, towels, and a starter kit of paper goods are included, many Putnam County hosts toss these in for free.
dos.ny.gov/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with my RV rental?
You can truly customize your Carmel Hamlet RV trip. Common host add-ons include linen and towel packages ($25 to $75), kitchen kits, generator hours, propane refills, bike racks, kayaks, fire pits, and pet cleaning fees. Pickup is typically at the host's home in Carmel Hamlet, Mahopac, Brewster, or nearby Putnam County towns, and many hosts offer delivery to local campgrounds for a per-mile fee. Mileage policies vary, so check whether daily caps fit your route or if unlimited mileage is offered. Pro tip: ask about Instant Book listings if you want to confirm immediately, and use the Festival-Friendly filter if you're heading to events like the Dutchess County Fair in nearby Rhinebeck.
iloveny.com/places-to-go/hudson-valley/How do payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is simple, secure, and entirely online. When you book your RV rental in Carmel Hamlet, you pay through RVezy's encrypted checkout using a credit or debit card, no cash or off-platform transfers needed. A refundable security deposit is held by RVezy (not the host) before your trip starts. The amount varies by rig, typically $500 to $1,500, and is released back to your card within a few business days after the trip ends, assuming the RV is returned clean, on time, with the same fuel level, and damage-free. Pro tip: do a quick video walk-around with your host at both pickup and drop-off so any pre-existing scratches are documented. It makes the deposit return seamless.
dos.ny.gov/consumer-protectionWhat are the best road trip destinations from Carmel Hamlet?
Carmel Hamlet is a road trip launchpad. A few favorites for an RV road trip from Carmel Hamlet: Cold Spring and the Hudson Highlands (15 miles, great for riverside antiquing and hiking Breakneck Ridge), Bear Mountain State Park (30 miles, with Hudson River views and a zoo), Storm King Art Center in New Windsor (40 miles, large-scale outdoor sculpture), Dia:Beacon contemporary art museum (about 25 miles), and the Catskill Mountains around Phoenicia and Woodstock (90 miles north). For a longer loop, Lake George and the southern Adirondacks are roughly 3.5 hours away. Pro tip: pair Fahnestock State Park with a day trip to the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park for a memorable family RV trip in Carmel Hamlet.
