Campgrounds near Cobleskill, New York
Cobleskill sits in Schoharie County in the northern foothills of the Catskills, roughly 40 miles west of Albany. The surrounding Schoharie Valley offers a mix of state park camping, private family campgrounds, and creek-side sites within a short drive of town, making it a practical base for RV travelers exploring central New York.
Options close to town include Twin Oaks Campground and Hide-A-Way Campsites, both private grounds catering to RVs and families. For a more rustic state-park experience, Max V Shaul State Park lies south of Cobleskill along Schoharie Creek, offering wooded tent and trailer sites. Locust Park Campground and Little Lake Campground round out the nearby choices for travelers who prefer smaller, quieter grounds.
The area works well for trips built around Howe Caverns, Secret Caverns, the Iroquois Indian Museum, and the surrounding farm country. Interstate 88 provides straightforward highway access for larger rigs coming from Albany or Binghamton.
Things to do near Cobleskill
Howe Caverns is the region's headline attraction, with underground boat rides and guided cave tours a short drive from town. Nearby Secret Caverns and the Iroquois Indian Museum add rainy-day options that work well for families with kids.
Outdoor activities center on Schoharie Creek and the surrounding hills. Fishing is allowed in Panther and Schoharie Creeks at Max V Shaul State Park, and a car-top boat and fishing access trail to Schoharie Creek is available. Hikers head to Vroman's Nose, a cliff-top plateau with valley views, or continue south to Mine Kill State Park, which features the Blenheim-Gilboa Reservoir, Mine Kill Falls, and miles of trails.

The camping season in this part of New York typically runs from mid-May through mid-October. Max V Shaul State Park operates on that seasonal window, and most private grounds in the area follow a similar schedule. Winter camping is limited, and many private parks close entirely after Columbus Day weekend.
Summer is peak season. July and August bring warm days, active creek fishing, and full weekends at both state and private grounds, so early booking is important, especially around Independence Day and Labor Day. June tends to be one of the wetter months, with the highest number of rainy days in the year.
Fall foliage from late September into mid-October is a strong shoulder-season draw, with cooler nights and thinner crowds. Spring conditions are cool and often muddy, and snowfall is possible into April. Winter visitors take advantage of snowshoeing and cross-country skiing at Max V Shaul State Park, though overnight camping is not offered off-season.

How to book campgrounds near Cobleskill
New York State Parks use a centralized reservation system through ReserveAmerica. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites becoming available at the 9-month window at 8 AM on weekdays from March 15 through Labor Day, and 9 AM on weekends and off-season weekdays. Reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival, and this applies to campsites only. Private grounds such as Twin Oaks Campground, Hide-A-Way Campsites, Locust Park Campground, and Little Lake Campground handle reservations directly by phone or through their own websites; summer weekends often book out well in advance.
What to expect
Grounds in the Cobleskill area range from full-hookup private parks to rustic state sites. Max V Shaul State Park is a small, quiet camping area with 30 wooded tent and trailer sites, and small RVs are welcome at any of the sites, although hookups are not available and there is no dumping station at the campground. Travelers with larger rigs or a need for electric, water, and sewer hookups should plan on one of the nearby private campgrounds.
Quiet hours at Max V Shaul run from 10 PM to 7 AM, and pets are permitted on leash with a two-pet limit per site and current proof of rabies inoculation required at check-in. Cell reception can be spotty in the valley, and the closest full-service grocery and fuel stops are in Cobleskill or Schoharie. Propane is available in Cobleskill.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Cobleskill, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Cobleskill, NY?
RV rental in Cobleskill, NY is one of the better values in the Northeast, with most nightly rates landing between $95 and $225 depending on the RV type and season. Travel trailers tend to be the most budget-friendly, while Class C motorhomes and larger fifth wheels sit at the higher end. To find a cheap RV rental in Cobleskill, aim for May or late September when Schoharie County is gorgeous but demand drops off after the Cobleskill Sunshine Fair crowds leave. Pro tip: filter by Instant Book and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Booking a Sunday-to-Thursday stretch around Howe Caverns trips can shave 15 to 25 percent off compared to weekend rates.
visitschohariecounty.com/listing/howe-cavernsDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Cobleskill?
Good news: your regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Cobleskill. New York State does not require a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or any special RV endorsement for the motorhomes and travel trailers listed on RVezy, including Class A, Class B campervans, and Class C rigs. You'll need to be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform during booking, so there's no paperwork shuffle at pickup. Visiting from outside the US? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license. Most first-time renters in Schoharie County are surprised how quickly the verification step wraps up, usually within a few hours.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/get-driver-licenseWhat's included for protection and peace of mind on my Cobleskill RV rental?
Every RV rental in Cobleskill booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can head toward Howe Caverns or the Catskills with confidence. The protection plan helps cover damages to the RV during your trip, and you choose your coverage level at checkout (not the host), so you stay in control of how much protection feels right. Roadside assistance is included with every protection plan, covering common issues like flat tires, lockouts, and battery jumps. Pro tip: if you're a first-time renter exploring rural Schoharie County back roads, the higher-tier plan is a small upgrade that buys a lot of peace of mind.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Cobleskill RV trip?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy sets the cancellation policy for every reservation (hosts don't), so the rules are consistent and clear. Your refund depends on how far out you are from your trip start date, and RVezy support is available 24/7 if life throws you a curveball like a severe Mohawk Valley winter storm. If a host ever cancels on you, RVezy helps you rebook or provides a refund or travel credit. Pro tip: book early to secure the rig you want for peak Schoharie County fall foliage in early October, then revisit your plans as the date approaches. The full cancellation details live in the RVezy Help Center.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an RV rental in Cobleskill?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental in Cobleskill is easy to find: just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to see hosts who welcome furry travelers. Schoharie County is a great dog destination, with leashed trails at Max V. Shaul State Park, the Long Path crossing Vroman's Nose, and quiet country roads along the Schoharie Creek for morning walks. New York State Parks allow pets at campsites with proof of current rabies vaccination, so pack that paperwork with your leash and bowls. Pro tip: message your host before booking to confirm any pet fee and ask about their favorite local dog-friendly spots in Cobleskill.
parks.ny.gov/regulations/pets.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Cobleskill?
Yes, RV delivery in Cobleskill is one of the most popular ways to start a trip here, especially for first-timers heading to Howe Caverns Campground or Max V. Shaul State Park. Many RVezy hosts will drop the RV at your campsite, level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave, so you arrive to a fully set-up site. Filter for Delivery on RVezy to see who offers it, then message the host with your destination for a delivery quote (usually based on mileage). Pro tip: delivery to Howes Cave, Schoharie, or Cooperstown is common, and it turns your motorhome rental in Cobleskill into an almost effortless basecamp experience.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cobleskill,%20New%20YorkHow far can I travel from Cobleskill on an RV trip?
Plenty far. Cobleskill sits right off Interstate 88, putting some of the Northeast's best destinations within an easy day's drive for your Cobleskill RV trip. Cooperstown and the Baseball Hall of Fame are about 45 minutes west, Albany is 45 minutes east, the Catskills' North-South Lake area is roughly 90 minutes south, Lake George and the Adirondacks are about 2 hours north, and Niagara Falls is a scenic 5-hour westward push along I-90. Hosts set their own mileage policies, so some listings include generous daily mileage and a few even offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. Pro tip: message hosts before booking with your rough route, they can often bump your mileage allowance for a popular RV road trip from Cobleskill.
dot.ny.gov/regional-offices/region1Where are the best campgrounds near Cobleskill, NY?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Cobleskill include Max V. Shaul State Park in nearby Fultonham (a quiet, wooded New York State Park with electric sites along Schoharie Creek), Howe Caverns Campground next to the famous cave entrance with full hookups, Mine Kill State Park near North Blenheim (great for swimming and views of the Schoharie Reservoir), Glimmerglass State Park 45 minutes west toward Cooperstown on Otsego Lake, and Country Hills Campground in Richmondville with shaded sites. New York State Park sites book through ReserveAmerica up to 9 months ahead. Pro tip: for summer weekends, lock in Max V. Shaul or Glimmerglass the moment your dates open, they go fast.
parks.ny.gov/parks/maxvshaulWhen is the best time of year for RV camping in Cobleskill?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for RV camping in Cobleskill, with September and early October stealing the show thanks to brilliant Schoharie Valley fall foliage and crisp 60 to 70 degree afternoons. Summer days typically run 75 to 85 degrees with cool 55 to 65 degree nights perfect for campfires, while spring brings wildflowers and quieter trails. Most state park campgrounds open mid-May and close around Columbus Day. Pro tip: time your trip to the third weekend in August for the Schoharie County Sunshine Fair in Cobleskill, or aim for the last week of September when the maples explode and Howe Caverns is far less crowded than during peak summer.
weather.gov/aly/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay around Cobleskill?
You'll be just fine. First time renting an RV in Cobleskill is actually one of the easiest places to start: traffic is light, Interstate 88 is a smooth four-lane highway, and the rural roads through Schoharie County have wide shoulders and gentle terrain compared to the Catskills or Adirondacks. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking through the propane, water, electric, slide-outs, and dump procedures before you drive away. You can also message your host with questions before booking. Pro tip: ask for a Class C motorhome or a smaller travel trailer for your first trip, they drive much like a large van or pickup, and the back roads around Howes Cave are perfect for getting comfortable.
dmv.ny.gov/registration/register-recreational-vehicleWhat happens if something goes wrong with the RV during my trip?
You're never on your own. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so a flat tire on Route 7, a dead battery at Max V. Shaul, or a finicky water pump at Howe Caverns Campground is just a phone call away from being handled. RVezy's customer support team is also available before, during, and after your trip, and your host is usually the fastest first call for quirks specific to their RV. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number to your phone and snap a photo of the RV's make, model, and VIN at pickup, that's the info dispatch will ask for if you ever need help on the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Cobleskill RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, most RVezy hosts in Cobleskill welcome interstate road trips, you're about 30 minutes from Vermont's Green Mountains, 90 minutes to the Massachusetts Berkshires, and a scenic drive to Niagara Falls or the Maine coast. Cross-border travel into Canada (Montreal is about 3.5 hours north) depends on the host and insurance terms, so message the host before booking to confirm and discuss any extra paperwork. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the insurance and protection plan don't extend there. Pro tip: if you're planning a multi-state RV road trip from Cobleskill, mention it in your initial host message so they can flex mileage and route logistics with you.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on a Cobleskill RV trip?
Fuel is one of the easier line items to estimate. Gas prices in upstate New York's Mohawk Valley typically sit a touch above the national average, and most RVs you'll rent in Cobleskill get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (mpg) for Class A and Class C motorhomes, or 14 to 20 mpg for Class B campervans and tow setups. For a 300-mile weekend loop (think Cobleskill to Cooperstown to Albany and back), expect roughly $90 to $140 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Cobleskill or Schoharie before heading into the Catskills, prices climb noticeably once you cross into the tourist corridor along Route 23A and the Hudson Valley.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Cobleskill?
For summer weekends, sooner is better. New York State Parks open reservations 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, with new dates releasing at 8 a.m. Eastern on weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends. Popular Cobleskill-area spots like Max V. Shaul State Park, Mine Kill State Park, and Glimmerglass State Park fill up within hours for July and August Saturdays. Private campgrounds like Howe Caverns Campground and Country Hills typically book 2 to 4 months ahead for peak season. Pro tip: midweek nights (Sunday through Thursday) often have availability even in July, making them the smart-money pick for an RV camping Cobleskill trip, plus you'll have Howe Caverns and the Iroquois Indian Museum practically to yourself.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Cobleskill?
Driving an RV around Cobleskill is genuinely friendly. Interstate 88 runs right through, giving you a flat, four-lane corridor between Binghamton and Albany with easy on-ramps and gentle grades. State Route 7 and Route 30 are scenic two-lane roads with good visibility and modest hills through the Schoharie Valley. Winter (December through March) can bring snow, ice, and occasional Mohawk Valley wind gusts, so most RV trips stick to mid-spring through late fall. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk on rural roads near Howes Cave. Pro tip: avoid narrow shortcuts like Caverns Road during peak Howe Caverns visiting hours, stick to Route 7 with your motorhome rental in Cobleskill and you'll have an easy, low-stress drive.
511ny.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Cobleskill?
You'll find a great mix. Most campgrounds near Cobleskill offer 30-amp or 50-amp electric hookups, potable water fill stations, and dump stations on-site, with many private parks (like Howe Caverns Campground and Country Hills) providing full hookups including sewer at the site. New York State Parks like Max V. Shaul have electric sites, comfort stations with hot showers, and a centralized dump station you use on the way out. You'll also find picnic tables, fire rings, and firewood for sale (don't bring outside firewood, it's restricted statewide to prevent spreading invasive pests). Pro tip: top off your fresh water tank before leaving the campground, the next reliable RV fill station heading toward the Catskills is about 30 miles south.
dec.ny.gov/things-to-do/camping/firewoodWhat's typically included inside the RV I rent in Cobleskill?
More than you might expect. A typical RV rental in Cobleskill comes fully equipped with sleeping for 4 to 8, a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control (air conditioning and propane furnace), and seat belts for everyone traveling. Most listings include pots, pans, basic dishware, and bedding, and many add Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor speakers, a generator, or a TV. Campervan rental in Cobleskill leans smaller and nimbler, while Class C motorhomes give families room to spread out. Pro tip: scan each listing's amenities list and message the host to confirm what's stocked, some include kitchen kits and linen packages free, while others charge a small add-on fee.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cobleskill,%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about for my Cobleskill RV rental?
Hosts in Cobleskill offer a flexible menu of add-ons to customize your trip. Popular options include delivery and setup (great if you're heading straight to Howe Caverns Campground), generator use, bike racks, camping chairs, propane fills, linen and kitchen packages, and tank-cleaning services so you don't have to dump on your last morning. Pickup is usually at the host's home or driveway in or near Cobleskill, and you'll get a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough of every system. Mileage policies vary by host, with some including 100 to 150 free miles per night and others offering RV rental with unlimited mileage. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a propane top-off and linen package if it's your first trip, you'll roll out ready to camp without a single hardware store stop.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Cobleskill,%20New%20YorkHow does the security deposit and payment work for a Cobleskill RV rental?
Payment is straightforward and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit or debit card when you book, and you never hand cash to the host. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment (amount varies by RV), and it's released back to you after the trip once the host confirms everything came back in good shape. Document the RV's condition with photos and a quick walkaround video at pickup and return, that's the single best way to avoid any deposit disputes. Pro tip: keep all communication inside the RVezy messaging system so there's a clear record, RVezy's support team can step in if questions come up about your deposit.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park an RV overnight in Cobleskill outside a campground?
Cobleskill is RV-friendly for short stops, though overnight stays should happen at a designated campground or with explicit permission from a property owner. Some Walmart and Cracker Barrel locations along the I-88 corridor have historically allowed a single night of RV parking with manager approval, so always call ahead to confirm. For anything beyond a one-night transit stop, head to Max V. Shaul State Park, Howe Caverns Campground, or Country Hills Campground in Richmondville. Street parking overnight in the Village of Cobleskill is not permitted. Pro tip: if you're planning a fall foliage RV road trip from Cobleskill, book your campground first, then build the route, it's the easiest way to lock in stress-free overnights.
