Camping near Ellenville, New York
Ellenville sits in the Rondout Valley between the Catskill Mountains to the north and the Shawangunk Ridge to the east, in Ulster County, New York. The area is a compact base for RV travelers, with private resort-style campgrounds within a short drive and public state land minutes away. The Sam's Point Area of Minnewaska State Park Preserve, located on the highest section of the Shawangunk Mountains, is the most southerly section of Minnewaska State Park Preserve, and comprises approximately 5,000 acres.
RV options close to town include Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort, Skyway Camping Resort, Catskill RV Resort, Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Birchwood Acres, and Rondout Valley RV Campground. Rondout Valley operates seasonally from April through November, requiring reservations for its full-hookup RV sites and tent camping areas, and sits in forested terrain alongside a creek. Sites range from basic to full hook-up, wooded to waterfront, with daily activities and resort-style amenities.
New York City is roughly two hours south, which makes Ellenville a common weekend destination and pushes summer and fall-foliage weekends to fill early.
Things to do around Ellenville
Hiking is the headline activity. Sam's Point is home to Lake Maratanza, one of the five Shawangunk sky lakes, along with ice cave crevices, cliffs, and numerous scenic vistas. The preserve is part of the Shawangunk Ridge, features a rare dwarf pitch pine barren ecosystem, and routes lead to cliff-top views over the Hudson Valley, the Catskills, and the Rondout Valley. The Ice Cave Trail contains ice flows, water, narrow crevices, low rock ceilings, dark areas, ladders, and boardwalks, so appropriate footwear is essential.
On-site amenities at the private resorts round out family trips, with pools, playgrounds, and organized weekend events at the Jellystone and Skyway properties. Off-site, the Rondout Valley is known for farm stands, cideries, and breweries, and the villages of New Paltz, Kerhonkson, and Woodstock are all within a short drive.

Most private RV parks near Ellenville run a spring-to-fall season. Rondout Valley operates seasonally from April through November, and the other resort campgrounds in this list follow similar shoulder-season calendars. Summer is peak: warm days, full activity schedules, and the highest demand at family resorts.
Spring brings trout fishing and wildflowers but also mud season on unpaved back roads. Fall is prime time for foliage and quieter sites, though weekends still book up. Reservations are required weekends and holidays only, from mid-April through mid-November, for the Sam's Point Area of Minnewaska State Park Preserve, so trips built around ice-cave and ridge hikes need to plan around that window.
Winter closes most private RV parks, but the state parks stay open for day use. Summers here are warm and wet, and winters are freezing and snowy, so cold-season visitors should expect snow cover on trails and seasonal closures at ice-cave routes.

How to book near Ellenville
Private resort campgrounds around Ellenville take reservations directly through their own websites or by phone, and summer weekends, holiday weekends, and peak foliage weekends in October sell out weeks in advance. Book as early as possible for July, August, and Columbus Day weekend. Rondout Valley RV Campground is part of the Thousand Trails membership program, so members can stay at no nightly cost while non-members book nightly stays through the operator.
For public land, the systems are separate from private parks. New York state park and DEC campground reservations can be made up to nine months in advance through ReserveAmerica, with same-day reservations allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites.
Sam's Point parking reservations, required weekends and holidays from April 15 through November 15, can be made online at newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com or by calling 1-800-456-2267.
What to expect on the ground
Sites near Ellenville range from tight wooded pads at smaller parks to full-service sites suited to larger rigs. Rondout Valley offers full-hookup RV sites with water, electric, and sewer, features mostly back-in sites with limited pull-through options, and sites are described as spacious with shade from numerous trees. Cell service in the valley can be spotty, and drivers should expect a weak signal in coves along the ridge.
Black bears live throughout the Catskills and Shawangunks, so food and trash should be stored in a vehicle or hard-sided container overnight. New York asks visitors not to move firewood in order to protect state forests from pests and disease.
Road access can be a challenge, with some approaches running on unpaved surfaces, so drivers with longer trailers should scout turn-arounds in advance.

On RVezy, travel trailers in the Ellenville area generally start around $90 to $150 per night, while Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $325 per night, depending on size and season. Summer weekends (especially around July 4th and Labor Day) book up fastest and command premium pricing. Use the price filter on RVezy to set your budget, and message hosts directly to ask about weekly discounts, which many owners offer for stays of 5+ nights.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ellenville,%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Ellenville?
You're in luck: a regular New York State driver's license (or any valid US/Canadian license) is all you need to rent an RV in Ellenville. No commercial driver's license (CDL), no special motorhome endorsement, no RV-specific test. New York doesn't require anything extra for Class A, B, or C motorhomes, travel trailers, or fifth wheels available on RVezy. You do need to be at least 25 years old, and you'll verify your ID quickly through the RVezy platform during booking. Visiting from outside North America? Pick up an International Driving Permit from your home country's auto association before you fly in (usually under $20) and you're road-ready for your Ellenville RV trip.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/get-driver-licenseWhat protection is included with my Ellenville RV rental?
Every RVezy booking in Ellenville comes with a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance built right in, so you can hit the Catskills with real peace of mind. You choose your coverage level during checkout (not the host), so you can pick the plan that fits your comfort zone and budget. Roadside assistance is included no matter which tier you select, which means if you get a flat on Route 209 or need help on a narrow Shawangunk back road, one phone call gets you sorted. Coverage details, limits, and deductibles are shown before you confirm, so there are no surprises.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Ellenville RV trip?
Booking an RV rental in Ellenville is genuinely low-risk. RVezy (not the individual host) sets the cancellation policy, and refunds scale based on how far out from your trip date you cancel. Special circumstances like natural disasters or major weather events in the Catskills are reviewed by the RVezy support team. You'll see the exact terms before you confirm payment, and customer support is available before, during, and after your trip if plans change. That flexibility is part of why so many first-time renters feel comfortable booking ahead for peak fall foliage season.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Ellenville?
Yes, your dog is welcome on plenty of Ellenville adventures. Use the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy to instantly see motorhomes and travel trailers whose owners welcome pets, and message the host beforehand to confirm any details (some allow cats, some have size limits). Ellenville is a dream for dog owners: leashed pups are welcome on most trails at Minnewaska State Park Preserve and along the Shawangunk Ridge Trail, and nearby Sam's Point Preserve has dog-friendly carriage roads. Pro tip: pack a collapsible water bowl for summer hikes, since the rocky Gunks terrain heats up fast in July and August. A pet-friendly RV rental in Ellenville turns a weekend into a real family trip.
parks.ny.gov/parks/minnewaska/details.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campground in Ellenville?
Yes, and RV delivery in Ellenville is one of the easiest ways to start your trip stress-free. Many RVezy hosts in the Hudson Valley and Catskills region offer delivery and setup directly to popular spots like Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in Gardiner or a private driveway in town. The host pulls the RV in, levels it, hooks up power and water, and walks you through every system before handing over the keys. Delivery fees vary by distance, so check the listing or message the host for a quote. This is hands-down the best option if it's your first time renting an RV: you skip the towing and setup learning curve and go straight to enjoying the Shawangunks.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ellenville,%20New%20YorkHow far can I drive from Ellenville on a typical RV rental?
Ellenville sits in a sweet spot for road trips, and most RVezy hosts include a generous daily mileage allowance (commonly 100 to 150 miles per day), with some offering RV rental with unlimited mileage. From Ellenville you can easily reach: Woodstock and the central Catskills (about 35 miles north), New Paltz and the Mohonk Preserve (about 25 miles east), the Delaware Water Gap (around 60 miles southwest), Lake George in the Adirondacks (roughly 175 miles north), and Niagara Falls (about 320 miles northwest). If you're planning a longer Ellenville RV trip, filter for unlimited-mileage listings or message the host to negotiate extra miles upfront, which is usually much cheaper than per-mile overage fees.
dot.ny.gov/indexWhere are the best campgrounds near Ellenville, NY?
You have fantastic options for RV camping in Ellenville and the surrounding Shawangunks. A few favorites: Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park in Gardiner (pools, activities, great for kids, about 20 miles east), Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds in Saugerties (about 35 miles north), American Family Campground in New Windsor (about 45 miles south), and Beaver Pond Campground inside Harriman State Park (about 50 miles southeast for that wilderness feel). Pro tip: Jellystone Gardiner fills up months in advance for summer weekends, so lock in dates as soon as your RV is booked. State park sites at Harriman can be reserved through ReserveAmerica up to 9 months ahead.
parks.ny.gov/camping/When is the best time to visit Ellenville in an RV?
Ellenville is a true four-season destination, but late September through mid-October is the jackpot for an RV trip thanks to the Catskills and Shawangunk foliage exploding in red, orange, and gold. Summer (June through August) brings warm days in the 75 to 85 F range and is peak for hiking, swimming at Lake Minnewaska, and the Ellenville Blueberry Festival in August. Spring (May) is quieter with daytime temps around 60 to 70 F and waterfalls running full. Winter dips into the 20s and 30s F with snow, but many hosts still rent winterized RVs for cozy weekend getaways near Holiday Mountain. Book foliage weekends 2 to 3 months ahead, since they are the most popular bookings of the year.
weather.gov/aly/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving around Ellenville?
You're going to do great, and first-time renters drive away from Ellenville every weekend with zero issues. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup, covering driving tips, leveling, hookups, the generator, slide-outs, and the bathroom system, so you're never left guessing. Around Ellenville, Route 209 is a wide, flat, well-paved main road that's perfect for getting comfortable behind the wheel. Avoid the narrow switchbacks on the Mohonk Mountain House access road and Sam's Point Road for your first day. If city driving makes you nervous, choose RV delivery from a local host and skip the pickup entirely. The host is also just a text away during your whole trip.
dmv.ny.gov/more-info/driver-manuals-and-practice-testsWhat happens if I have a breakdown or issue during my Ellenville RV trip?
You're covered, day or night. Every RVezy rental includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection package, so if you get a flat tire on Route 52, run out of fuel heading up to Sam's Point, or have a mechanical issue at your campground in Kerhonkson, one phone call dispatches help. Your host is also available by message throughout your trip for quick questions like how to reset the inverter or restart the water pump. RVezy's customer support team backs everything up if anything escalates. Pro tip: cell service can be patchy in deep Catskills hollows around Sundown and Peekamoose, so screenshot the roadside number and your host's contact info before heading out of Ellenville.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/511NYBrochure.pdfCan I take my Ellenville RV rental into another state or Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is welcome on most RVezy rentals, and Ellenville's location makes it a fantastic launchpad. Popular RV road trips from Ellenville include Vermont's Green Mountains (about 200 miles north), the New Hampshire White Mountains (around 290 miles), Acadia National Park in Maine (about 450 miles), and the Pennsylvania Pocono Mountains (just 70 miles southwest). Cross-border travel into Canada is allowed on many listings, but you must confirm with the host and the protection package before booking since insurance coverage varies. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Message the host directly from the listing before you book to confirm your route, especially for longer multi-state itineraries.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I plan for?
Realistic expectations make for a happy Ellenville RV trip. Class C motorhomes average 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG) on gasoline, Class A motorhomes 6 to 10 MPG, and campervans (Class B) often 16 to 20 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, usually knocking 3 to 5 MPG off your truck's normal rate. New York gas prices around Ellenville tend to run slightly above the national average, with Ulster County stations on Route 209 and Canal Street being your most convenient fills. For a typical 4-night trip with 300 miles of driving, budget roughly $120 to $200 in fuel for a Class C. Pro tip: fill up in Ellenville before heading deeper into the Catskills, where prices climb.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Ellenville?
Booking early is the single best move you can make. New York State Parks (including nearby Lake Taghkanic and Harriman) open reservations 9 months ahead through ReserveAmerica, and the most popular fall foliage weekends in late September and early October fill within days of opening. Private campgrounds like Rainbow's End and Jellystone Gardiner take reservations up to a year out and often sell out summer weekends by April. For a spontaneous mid-week trip, you can usually find sites 1 to 2 weeks ahead even in summer. Pro tip: book your RV on RVezy first, then your campground, because RV availability for peak Catskills weekends is actually tighter than campground availability.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are local driving conditions like around Ellenville?
Ellenville driving is very manageable, even in a larger motorhome. Route 209 (the main north-south corridor) is a wide, well-maintained two-lane highway perfect for RVs. Route 52 climbs over the Shawangunk Ridge with a few steeper grades and curves, drive it in daylight your first time and use low gears on the descent into Pine Bush. The Cragsmoor area has tight switchbacks better suited to smaller campervans or travel trailers. Watch for deer at dawn and dusk year-round, and in winter expect snow and occasional ice from December through March, when chains or good all-season tires matter. Summer afternoons can bring quick Catskills thunderstorms, so pull over and wait them out rather than driving through heavy rain.
511ny.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Ellenville?
You'll be well taken care of. Most campgrounds near Ellenville offer full hookups (water, 30/50 amp electric, and sewer), with Rainbow's End and Jellystone Gardiner providing pull-through sites, hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, and dump stations. State park campgrounds like Beaver Pond at Harriman typically have electric and water but no sewer at the site, with a central dump station on the way out. For fresh water fills, every campground office can point you to the spigot, and there's also a public dump station available seasonally at some Ulster County campgrounds. Pro tip: top off your fresh water in town before heading into more remote spots like Mongaup Pond Campground, where amenities are basic but the lakeside setting is unbeatable.
dec.ny.gov/outdoor/camping.htmlWhat's included inside the RV I rent in Ellenville?
You're getting a home on wheels. Motorhome rentals in Ellenville typically include a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink, cookware), a bathroom with toilet and shower, comfortable sleeping for 4 to 8 people depending on size, climate control (furnace and air conditioning), and a dinette that converts to extra sleeping. Most listings include linens, towels, and a starter pack of paper goods, but always check the listing's amenities section. Many include a generator, outdoor awning, camp chairs, and an outdoor griddle. TVs and Wi-Fi hotspots are common in newer rigs, though signal in the Catskills hollows can be spotty. Message your host before booking if a specific item (like a coffee maker or kids' bunks) is a must-have.
energy.gov/energysaver/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
This is where you customize your trip. Common RVezy add-ons in Ellenville include kitchen kits, bedding packages, generator hours, bike racks, kayak/SUP carriers, outdoor grills, and pet cleaning fees, each priced individually by the host (usually $20 to $75 per item or per trip). Mileage policies vary: many hosts include 100 miles per day free with extra miles at $0.35 to $0.50 each, while some offer flat unlimited-mileage packages, perfect for longer loops through the Catskills and Adirondacks. Pickup is typically at the host's home in or near Ellenville, with delivery available for an extra fee. Pro tip: bundle add-ons at booking rather than mid-trip, since hosts often discount packages and you save the back-and-forth messaging once you are already on the road.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Ellenville,%20New%20YorkHow do payment and the security deposit work?
It is all handled securely through RVezy, with no cash or side payments to the host. You pay for your Ellenville RV rental with a credit or debit card at booking, and the host receives payment after your trip starts, which protects both sides. The security deposit is a separate hold placed on your card a few days before pickup (typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the rig), and it is released back to you after the host confirms the RV was returned in good shape, usually within a few days of trip completion. To avoid any issues: do a thorough walkaround with the host at pickup, take date-stamped photos of any existing scratches, return the RV with the agreed fuel and propane levels, and empty the tanks at a proper dump station before returning.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksAre winter RV rentals available in Ellenville?
Yes, and a winter Ellenville RV trip is a hidden gem. Plenty of RVezy hosts in the Catskills region offer four-season, winterized RVs with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, propane furnaces, and the option to plug into shore power at campgrounds that stay open year-round. Holiday Mountain Ski & Fun Park is just 20 minutes from town, and Belleayre and Hunter Mountain are within an hour, making Ellenville a great basecamp for snow weekends. Use the listing filters and message hosts to confirm cold-weather readiness before booking. Pro tip: pack a heated water hose, ask the host about antifreeze for the gray tank, and book a site with reliable 50-amp power so your furnace and space heater can run together without tripping the breaker.
