Campgrounds near Elmont
Elmont sits in western Nassau County on Long Island, just east of the Queens border. The village has no campground within its own limits, so RV travelers use a ring of parks that surround the New York City metro area. Options fall into three groups: urban RV parks near Manhattan, Long Island state park campgrounds along the Great South Bay, and larger state parks in the Hudson Highlands and central New Jersey.
The closest option is Floyd Bennett Field in Brooklyn, part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, which offers tent and RV sites on Jamaica Bay with potable water, showers, and a dump station but no hookups. Just across the Hudson, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is a full-service urban RV park within reach of Manhattan by ferry or PATH.
For a more traditional campground feel, Heckscher State Park in East Islip on Long Island's Great South Bay covers roughly 1,600 acres with camping, swimming, biking, and hiking. Further afield, Beaver Pond Campground at Harriman State Park sits in the Hudson Highlands about an hour north, and Allaire State Park is a similar drive south into central New Jersey.
Things to do around Elmont
Water recreation drives most trips. Heckscher State Park offers bay swimming at West Beach, boat launches, kayaking, canoeing, windsurfing, and paddleboarding, along with four miles of paved multi-use trails for hiking and biking. Beaver Pond Campground puts guests next to the Lake Welch swimming beach and Harriman State Park's extensive network of hiking trails, including portions of the Appalachian Trail.
History and family attractions round out the area. Allaire State Park is best known for its historic 19th-century iron-making town, Allaire Village, and the Pine Creek Railroad narrow-gauge train ride, with fishing, hiking, and biking on site. At Floyd Bennett Field, campers can explore woodland habitat, historic airplane hangars, and a recreation complex with bike rentals, plus an outdoor archery range. From Liberty Harbor, Manhattan itself becomes the attraction, reached by ferry or the nearby PATH.

Seasons dictate which campgrounds are open. Heckscher State Park runs from late May through early September. Beaver Pond Campground's regular reservation season runs from early May through mid-October within the roughly 46,000-acre Harriman State Park, with walk-in-only camping for a brief window in April. Camp Gateway Brooklyn at Floyd Bennett Field is typically open from mid-May through mid-October. Allaire State Park has traditionally operated April 1 through December 15, though the family campsites are currently closed for construction of a new bathroom and shower facility, while group camping remains open. Liberty Harbor RV Park is the exception and stays open year-round.
Summer weekends fill fast. Harriman is just an hour's drive from New York City and is a favored weekend getaway, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible.
Bug pressure builds through the warm months. Reviewers at Floyd Bennett Field note that mosquitoes are a significant problem from July through October. Bring repellent and consider shoulder-season trips in May or September for cooler nights and thinner crowds.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

Jerry was very flexible with picking up and dropping off. Very nice guy. We traveled from Long Beach to Nashville me my wife and my two kids in the Solis and we had the most comfortable drive. Very friendly user vehicle and Jerry was very good at explaining how everything works. We had a great time and the unlimited mileage was a huge benefit. The RV fits where a minivan fits and the all around visibility from the cockpit is amazing. Not to mention that all safety features are also a huge plus with brake assistance and blind spots with folding mirrors. Highly recommended.

How to book
New York state parks use one reservation system. Campsite reservations can be made for today and up to nine months in advance through ReserveAmerica, which covers both Heckscher and Beaver Pond. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival, and bookings can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica call center at 1-800-456-2267.
Floyd Bennett Field books through the federal system: reservations are made online at recreation.gov, and advance reservations are required at least a day ahead of arrival. For Allaire and other New Jersey state parks, online reservations are handled through njportal.com/DEP/NJOutdoors, though note that Allaire's family campsites are currently closed for construction. Liberty Harbor RV Park takes reservations directly through its own website or by phone.
What to expect
Hookups are limited at the region's state parks. Heckscher has no electric, water, or sewer hookups, but the campground provides restrooms, showers, a dump station, and a picnic table at each site. Beaver Pond has no electrical hookups either, and its 125 sites accommodate up to two tents and six people per site, with select sites able to fit trailers or RVs up to 30 feet in length. Comfort stations, showers, laundry, and a dump station are on site.
RV travelers wanting full hookups should look at Liberty Harbor, an urban park geared to all RV types. Pet rules vary: pets are not permitted in Beaver Pond Campground or at Lake Welch, and dogs are only allowed on nature trails in the undeveloped areas of Heckscher rather than in the campground. Bring bug spray, use a bear-aware food routine at Harriman, and expect close-quarters urban camping at the Jersey City site.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Elmont, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Elmont, NY?
An RV rental in Elmont, NY is one of the most cost-effective ways to explore the New York metro area, especially when you split the cost with family or friends. Prices typically start around $150 per night for compact campervans and travel trailers, while larger Class A and Class C motorhomes range from $250 to $400 per night during peak summer. To find a cheap RV rental in Elmont, NY, target shoulder seasons (April to May and September to October) when nightly rates often drop 20 to 30 percent and Belmont Park traffic eases. Book mid-week pickups and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. You will also save by choosing a delivery-only listing if you do not need to drive into Manhattan yourself.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elmont,%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Elmont, NY?
For first-time renters, your standard New York State (or any U.S. or Canadian) driver's license is all you need for the vast majority of RVs on the RVezy platform. No Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required to rent an RV in Elmont, NY, even for Class A and Class C motorhomes under 26,000 pounds. Approved renters on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID securely through the booking platform, so there is no extra DMV paperwork. Visiting from overseas? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's automobile association. Then it is just pickup, walkthrough, and out toward your adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs every RV rental in Elmont protected, and what happens if something goes wrong?
You are covered from the moment you book. Every RV rental in Elmont, NY booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance built right into your reservation. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the vehicle, giving you financial peace of mind. During checkout you choose your level of coverage (hosts do not set this, you do), so you can dial protection up for big family trips down the Long Island Expressway or keep it standard for a weekend at Nickerson Beach. If you get a flat tire or a battery dies at the campground, one call to RVezy's support line gets help dispatched. That is real confidence for your Long Island RV trip.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if my plans change after I book an RV in Elmont?
Plans change, and RVezy is built for that. RVezy (not individual hosts) sets the cancellation policy for every booking, so you will not see a patchwork of host policies on listings, just one clear RVezy framework. Your refund depends on how far out from your trip start you cancel, with full or partial refunds available within defined windows. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or provides credit. Book early to lock in the best Elmont RV inventory around Belmont Stakes weekend or US Open week, knowing the cancellation terms are clear and consistent.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Elmont, NY?
Yes, pets are welcome on plenty of Elmont rigs. When searching, toggle the Pet-Friendly filter to instantly see every pet-friendly RV rental in Elmont, NY, then message the host about any breed or size notes. Many hosts charge a small cleaning fee (typically $50 to $100). Once you have your RV, Long Island offers dog-friendly stops: Alley Pond Park in nearby Queens has off-leash hours, Eisenhower Park in East Meadow has miles of leashed trails, and Nickerson Beach in Lido Beach allows leashed dogs in the campground (not on the sand in summer). Pack a tie-out and water bowl and you are good to roll.
parks.ny.gov/regulations/pets.aspxCan the RV be delivered to me in Elmont or to a nearby campground?
Yes, and it is one of the easiest ways to start your trip. Many RVezy hosts offer RV delivery in Elmont, NY straight to your driveway, hotel, or campground, then handle leveling, hookups, and a full walkthrough so you never have to drive the rig yourself. This is ideal if you are new to RVing, flying into JFK or LaGuardia (both under 20 minutes away), or base-camping at Nickerson Beach Park in Lido Beach or Battle Row Campground in Old Bethpage. Filter by Delivery when browsing listings, message the host with your address, and confirm the delivery fee upfront. You will arrive to an RV that is set up and ready to go.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elmont,%20New%20YorkHow far can I drive, and what are the mileage policies on Elmont RV rentals?
You will have plenty of road to roam. Many hosts in Elmont include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage packages that are great for longer trips. From Elmont you can reach the Hamptons in about 75 miles, Montauk Point in 115 miles, the Catskills in 120 miles, Philadelphia in 100 miles, and Boston in 220 miles, all easily doable within standard mileage limits. Each listing shows the mileage allowance and the per-mile overage rate (often $0.30 to $0.45) upfront before you book. If you are planning a big New England or Pennsylvania loop, message the host and ask about a flat-rate unlimited-mileage upgrade for the week.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elmont,%20New%20YorkWhere can I park or stay overnight in an RV near Elmont?
You have solid options close to home. Nickerson Beach Park in Lido Beach (about 12 miles south) is the standout, an oceanfront Nassau County campground with full hookups, showers, and direct Atlantic beach access; a Nassau County Leisure Pass gets you the resident rate. Battle Row Campground in Old Bethpage (about 15 miles east) offers wooded sites with electric and water. Heckscher State Park in East Islip (about 30 miles east) has RV sites near the Great South Bay. For a NYC base camp, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City puts you across the Hudson from Manhattan. Overnight parking on Elmont streets is not permitted, so always book a site for stress-free RV camping near Elmont.
nassaucountyny.gov/2954/Nickerson-Beach-ParkWhen is the best time of year for an Elmont RV trip?
Late spring through early fall is the sweet spot. May through October delivers warm days (70s to mid 80s F), open campgrounds, and that classic Long Island beach-and-vineyard vibe. June brings the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park in Elmont, July and August are peak ocean season at Jones Beach and Robert Moses, and September is often the smartest month: water is still warm, crowds thin out, and North Fork wineries hit harvest. October brings fall color in the Catskills, about 2 hours away. Winter RV rentals are available for self-contained rigs, but expect 30s to 40s F and book a campground with electric hookups for the heater. Avoid Belmont Stakes weekend in early June unless that is your reason for the trip.
weather.gov/okx/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
You will do great, first-timers rent RVs in Elmont every weekend. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup covering how to start the generator, dump tanks, run the slide-outs, and check tire pressure, and you can message them throughout your trip with questions. If you are nervous about driving a big rig in the dense NYC metro, two easy fixes: pick a smaller Class B campervan or travel trailer for your first time renting an RV, or book delivery so the host parks it at your campsite. Avoid the parkways (Northern State, Southern State, Belt, and Cross Island all ban RVs and trucks due to low bridges) and stick to the Long Island Expressway (I-495) and Sunrise Highway. You will feel like a pro by day two.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/cpg.pdfWhat happens if I break down on a trip from Elmont?
Help is just a phone call away, 24 hours a day. Every booking on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so whether you have a flat on the Long Island Expressway, a dead battery at Hither Hills State Park in Montauk, or a generator hiccup in the Catskills, you call the dedicated support line and a service tech is dispatched to you. Your host is also typically reachable by phone or in-app message for quick troubleshooting (sometimes it is as simple as flipping a propane switch). Before pulling out of Elmont, snap photos of the fuse panel and water-pump switch locations during your walkthrough so you can describe any issue quickly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take an Elmont RV rental into Canada or other states?
Yes, an RV road trip from Elmont can cross state lines and even into Canada with the right prep. The contiguous U.S. states are typically fair game with most hosts, just confirm your route when you message them. Popular Northeast loops include Cape Cod (about 4.5 hours), the White Mountains of New Hampshire (about 5.5 hours), and Acadia National Park in Maine (about 8 hours). For Canadian trips (Niagara Falls, Ontario or Montreal), many hosts will approve cross-border travel but need advance notice so the right insurance documentation travels with you. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because coverage does not extend there. Bring your passport and a printed booking confirmation and you are set.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat should I budget for fuel on an Elmont RV trip?
With a little planning, fuel will not surprise you. Most Class C motorhomes in the Elmont area get 8 to 10 MPG, Class A rigs around 6 to 8 MPG, and campervans and small travel trailers 12 to 18 MPG. New York gas prices typically run in the mid $3 range per gallon, with diesel often $0.20 to $0.40 higher; the cheapest fill-ups near Elmont are usually at warehouse clubs like Costco in Lawrence or BJ's in Garden City. A weekend trip to the Hamptons and back (about 175 miles round-trip) in a Class C runs roughly $65 to $85 in gas. If your route crosses the GW Bridge, fill up in New Jersey, where gas is consistently cheaper than New York and attendants pump for you.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far ahead should I book a campground near Elmont?
Earlier than you think, but it is easy once you know the system. New York State Parks (Hither Hills, Heckscher, Wildwood, Watch Hill on Fire Island) open reservations 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and prime summer weekends at Hither Hills can sell out within minutes of the booking window opening. Nassau County's Nickerson Beach books through the county directly and requires a Leisure Pass; reservations open in winter for the upcoming season. Suffolk County parks open March 1 for the year. For shoulder-season trips, you can often grab a site 2 to 4 weeks out. Set a calendar reminder for the exact ReserveAmerica opening date for your dream Hither Hills weekend, it is the single best move for a successful Long Island RV camping trip.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the local driving conditions like around Elmont?
The most important thing to know upfront: New York's scenic parkways (Southern State, Northern State, Belt, Cross Island, Meadowbrook, Wantagh, Sunken Meadow) all ban RVs, trucks, and trailers due to historic low stone bridges, some under 8 feet of clearance. Stick to the Long Island Expressway (I-495), Sunrise Highway (Route 27), and Northern Boulevard (Route 25A) and you will be fine. Traffic peaks Friday afternoon eastbound (heading to the Hamptons) and Sunday afternoon westbound, so plan departures for early morning or weekday off-peak. Winters are mild but nor'easters can bring snow and coastal flooding. Download the NY 511 app for real-time clearance and closure alerts, it is a lifesaver for any motorhome rental in Elmont.
511ny.org/What amenities can I expect at campgrounds near Elmont?
You will find a great range from basic to full-service. Nickerson Beach has electric, water, dump station, hot showers, restrooms, laundry, and beach access. Battle Row Campground in Old Bethpage offers sites with electric and water plus a playground and showers. Heckscher State Park has electric, a dump station, and showers but no individual sewer hookups. Hither Hills in Montauk has water and electric at most sites with a centralized dump station. Almost every campground has a potable water fill point and a dump station for guests. The best campgrounds near Elmont, NY all post their hookup details right on the New York State Parks reservation page, so you can match the site to your rig before you book.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What is inside the RV? Beds, kitchen, bathroom, Wi-Fi?
You will feel right at home. Most RVs on the RVezy platform in Elmont come fully equipped: a real bed (queen or king in most Class A and Class C motorhomes, with convertible dinettes for extra sleepers), a kitchen with stove, microwave, sink, and fridge, a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, heat, and a generator or battery system for off-grid power. Many include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor awning, and seatbelted seating for traveling. Wi-Fi varies; some hosts include a mobile hotspot, others recommend you bring your own (Verizon and T-Mobile both have strong Long Island coverage). Each listing shows a sleeps count, photos, and an amenities checklist, so you know exactly what is included before you book your campervan rental in Elmont.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elmont,%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and extras can I get with my Elmont RV rental?
Hosts offer many useful extras to make life easier. Common add-ons in Elmont include linen and towel packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits with cookware and dishes (often free or $25 to $50), portable BBQ grills, bike racks, generators, camping chairs, and outdoor rugs. Pickup is usually right at the host's home in Elmont or nearby Nassau communities, with a 30 to 60 minute walkthrough. Standard pickup is typically in the early afternoon with drop-off the next morning. Mileage allowances and generator hours are clearly listed on each booking. If you are flying into JFK (about 10 miles away) and do not want to rideshare with all your gear, ask about delivery to the airport hotel zone, many Elmont hosts will arrange it for a flat fee.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elmont,%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
It is straightforward and fully online, with no cash needed. When you book, RVezy charges your credit or debit card for the rental total (nightly rate, protection plan, taxes, and any selected add-ons). A refundable security deposit is handled separately from your booking payment, typically a few hundred to a few thousand dollars depending on the RV class, and it is released back to your card after drop-off, assuming the rig comes back in the same shape it left. The best way to avoid any deposit issues: take date-stamped photos and a quick video at pickup and drop-off (interior, exterior, tires, generator hours, fuel level), return it clean with tanks dumped and fuel topped off, and report any incidents to your host and RVezy immediately.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhat are the best road trip destinations from Elmont?
You are sitting on one of the best launch pads in the Northeast. Top RV road trip from Elmont options include Montauk and the Hamptons (about 115 miles east, 2.5 hours of beaches and lighthouses), the Catskills (about 120 miles north, hiking and fall foliage), the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania (about 110 miles west, lakes and waterfalls), Cape Cod, Massachusetts (about 240 miles, 4.5 hours of dunes and lobster rolls), and Niagara Falls (about 400 miles, 7 hours, an epic family run). For a quick overnight, North Fork wine country (about 75 miles east) is full of vineyards and farm stands. Local tip: leave Elmont before 7 AM on Friday to beat the Long Island Expressway eastbound jam, you will cut your travel time to Montauk almost in half.
