Campgrounds near Elmsford, New York
Elmsford sits in central Westchester County, roughly a half-hour drive from both the George Washington Bridge and the Hudson Highlands. That location puts RV renters within easy reach of two very different camping worlds: primitive state-park campgrounds in the wooded ridges north and west, and hookup-equipped urban RV parks near New York City.
The closest state-park option is Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park, about 25 miles north of the George Washington Bridge. Beaver Pond Campground is situated within the 46,000-acre Harriman State Park in Rockland County, directly adjacent to the Lake Welch Recreation Area. Farther north in Putnam County, Pelton Pond in Clarence Fahnestock State Park serves as the overnight base for a park that covers more than 14,000 acres of forest, parks, and recreational facilities in the Hudson Highlands of Putnam and Dutchess counties.
RV renters wanting full hookups and a straight shot into Manhattan typically choose Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City. Floyd Bennett Field in the Gateway National Recreation Area offers a rustic camping option inside New York City itself, and Camp Wyanokie adds a rugged tent-friendly choice on the New Jersey side of the Ramapo Mountains.
Things to do near Elmsford
Hiking dominates the region. Harriman State Park carries more than 200 miles of trails, including a stretch of the Appalachian Trail, plus 31 lakes and two swimming beaches. Clarence Fahnestock adds miles of additional trails and a section of the Appalachian Trail.
Water activities are a summer draw. Lake Welch at Harriman offers a protected swimming beach when lifeguards are on duty, and Canopus Lake, with its sandy shore and nearby picnic area, is the jewel of Fahnestock, with rowboats and kayaks available for rental. Both parks stock trout and other freshwater species.
Closer to the city, Floyd Bennett Field puts campers near Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, bike paths toward Jacob Riis beach, and an on-site archery range. Liberty Harbor is a practical base for ferries, PATH trains, and day trips into Manhattan.

State-park campgrounds in this region are seasonal. Beaver Pond typically opens in mid-April for walk-in camping only, then runs on a full reservation schedule from early May through mid-October. The Fahnestock campground is closed for the 2026 season to facilitate the construction of a new bathhouse, so RV renters should confirm status before booking Pelton Pond.
Spring and summer are the busiest seasons for swimming, paddling, and lake access. Weekends fill fastest, especially at Harriman, which sits about an hour from New York City and is a heavy weekend draw.
Fall brings cooler nights, thinner crowds, and strong foliage color through the Hudson Highlands. Winter shifts activity to Fahnestock Winter Park, which includes 15 kilometers of groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, as well as an area for sledding. Liberty Harbor RV Park and Floyd Bennett Field remain the year-round options in the immediate metro area.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book campgrounds near Elmsford
New York State Parks campgrounds, including Beaver Pond and Pelton Pond, use ReserveAmerica and can be reserved up to nine months in advance. From March 15 through Labor Day, reservations open at 8:00 AM Monday through Friday and 9:00 AM Saturday and Sunday. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3:00 PM on the arrival date, and walk-ins are permitted after 3:00 PM subject to availability.
Floyd Bennett Field is booked through Recreation.gov, with advance reservations required. Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City takes reservations directly through its own website or by phone and stays open year-round.
Book weekend dates as early as possible in spring and summer. Cancellation traffic is heavy, so mid-week openings often appear closer to the arrival date.
What to expect at Elmsford-area campgrounds
Facilities vary widely. Beaver Pond has sites that accommodate trailers or RVs up to 30 feet, picnic tables and fire rings, full-service bathrooms with showers and laundry, and a dump station, but no electrical hookups. Pelton Pond at Fahnestock has historically offered restrooms, showers, and a dump station, with pull-in space suitable for larger rigs.
Liberty Harbor is essentially a paved lot at a marina, with electric and water hookups, a dump station, showers, and laundry. It accommodates larger rigs, though the surrounding Jersey City streets are tight. Floyd Bennett Field is rustic, with tent and RV sites and basic facilities.
Black bears live in the Harriman and Bear Mountain area, so food storage rules apply. Pets are not permitted in Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch, and rules differ site to site.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Elmsford, NY
How much does an RV rental in Elmsford, NY typically cost?
Renting an RV in Elmsford is often more affordable than booking multiple hotel rooms in Westchester County, where nightly rates regularly top $200. On RVezy, travel trailers near Elmsford usually start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes run roughly $175 to $275, and larger Class A rigs land between $250 and $400. Because hosts set their own pricing, you can filter by your budget and find a cheap RV rental in Elmsford, especially during shoulder months like April or October. Pro tip: booking Sunday through Thursday often saves you 15 to 25 percent compared to peak summer weekends heading into the Hudson Valley.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elmsford,%20New%20YorkDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Elmsford?
Good news for first-timers: a regular New York driver's license (or any valid U.S. or Canadian license) is all you need to rent an RV in Elmsford. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special endorsement is required, even for larger Class A motorhomes. You must be at least 25 years old, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from overseas? Bring an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home country's auto association along with your home license. Most renters are surprised at how straightforward the paperwork is, so you can focus on planning your Hudson Valley route.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my trip protected if something goes wrong?
Yes. Every RVezy booking in Elmsford includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the Saw Mill River Parkway routes (in a parkway-legal vehicle) with peace of mind. Protection plans cover damage to the RV up to set limits and provide liability coverage during your trip. You choose your protection level during checkout, not the host, so you decide how much extra reassurance you want. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer Hudson Valley RV trip with multiple campgrounds, upgrading to a higher protection tier usually costs only a few dollars more per night and lowers your out-of-pocket responsibility if something happens.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Elmsford RV rental?
Booking is low-risk: RVezy (not the host) sets the cancellation policy that applies to every reservation. Refund amounts depend on how far in advance you cancel relative to your trip start date, and RVezy has dedicated guidance for disruptions like severe weather, which Westchester occasionally sees with nor'easters or remnants of tropical storms. Because the policy is handled at the platform level, you won't see different cancellation rules listed on individual RVs. Pro tip: book early to lock in the best summer dates in the Hudson Valley, then review the cancellation timeline in your booking confirmation so you know your key dates.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on an Elmsford RV rental?
Yes, and a pet-friendly RV rental in Elmsford is one of the easiest ways to road-trip with your pup. On RVezy, toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see motorhomes and travel trailers whose hosts welcome dogs (some allow cats too). Once you arrive, you have great local options: Rockefeller State Park Preserve in nearby Pleasantville allows leashed dogs on its carriage roads, and the North County Trailway that runs through Elmsford is leash-friendly year-round. New York State Parks campgrounds generally allow up to two pets per site with proof of current rabies vaccination. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm any pet fee and bring a copy of your vet records.
parks.ny.gov/documents/RulesAndRegulations.pdfCan the RV be delivered to my campground or driveway in Elmsford?
Yes, RV delivery in Elmsford is one of the most popular options on RVezy, especially for first-timers who'd rather skip driving a big rig through Westchester traffic. Many local hosts will deliver the RV directly to your driveway, a vacation rental, or a campground like Croton Point Park (about 20 minutes north) and handle the full setup, leveling, hookups, and walkthrough. Use the Delivery filter when searching, then message the host with your address or campground to get an exact delivery fee, which typically scales with distance. Pro tip: delivery is a great option if you're flying into Westchester County Airport or LaGuardia. You can land, rideshare to the campsite, and have the RV ready when you arrive.
parks.westchestergov.com/croton-point-parkHow far can I drive my Elmsford RV rental, and is unlimited mileage available?
You have plenty of range to explore the Northeast from Elmsford. Most RVezy hosts include a daily mileage allowance (often 100 to 150 miles per day) with affordable per-mile rates beyond that, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage as an add-on or upgrade. Elmsford sits at a useful crossroads: about 45 minutes to Manhattan, 2.5 hours to the Catskills, 3 hours to the Pocono Mountains, 4.5 hours to Cape Cod, and around 6.5 hours to Niagara Falls. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer RV road trip from Elmsford up to Lake George or the Adirondacks (roughly 3.5 to 4 hours north), filter for hosts offering unlimited or high-mileage packages to keep your budget predictable.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elmsford,%20New%20YorkWhere are the best campgrounds near Elmsford for RV camping?
You're spoiled for choice for RV camping near Elmsford. Croton Point Park (about 20 minutes north in Croton-on-Hudson) is the closest full-hookup option, with electric, water, and sewer sites on a peninsula extending into the Hudson River. Harriman State Park's Beaver Pond Campground (about 45 minutes west) accommodates RVs and offers wooded sites with access to extensive trails. About 90 minutes north, Clarence Fahnestock State Park offers wooded sites near swimming and fishing. Pro tip: Croton Point is the closest true full-hookup site to NYC, so it books out fast on summer weekends. Reserve as soon as your dates are set.
parks.westchestergov.com/croton-point-parkWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Elmsford?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for an Elmsford RV trip, with comfortable spring days in the 60s°F, summer highs typically in the 80s°F, and crisp fall days back in the 60s°F. September and early October are arguably the best of all: Hudson Valley fall foliage along Bear Mountain and the Taconic State Parkway is well known, summer crowds thin out, and campground availability opens up. July and August are peak family season with the warmest swimming weather. Winters in Westchester bring meaningful snowfall and lows often in the 20s°F, so most local campgrounds close from late October through April. Pro tip: book a leaf-peeping week in early October for a memorable Hudson Valley RV trip.
weather.gov/okx/I've never driven an RV before. Will I be okay?
Yes, your first time renting an RV from Elmsford is easier than it looks, and you're never on your own. Every RVezy host gives you a full orientation at pickup: they walk you through driving, slide-outs, water systems, propane, and dumping tanks, and answer every question before you pull away. If you're nervous about Westchester's parkways (which prohibit commercial vehicles and most large RVs due to low bridges), choose a smaller Class B campervan or travel trailer, or have the host deliver to your campground. From there, head north on Route 9 or I-684 where the roads open up. Pro tip: spend your first night at a closer campground like Croton Point so you can practice setup before tackling a longer haul.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/Parkways%20Prohibited.pdfWhat if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so if you get a flat tire on the Taconic State Parkway, a battery dies at Harriman, or anything mechanical comes up, one phone call gets help dispatched. Your host is typically just a text away for quick troubleshooting questions (like how to reset the GFCI or relight the water heater). RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave Elmsford, and photograph the RV's VIN and license plate so the details are handy if you ever need to call.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Elmsford RV rental into Canada or other states?
Yes to both, with a quick heads-up to your host. Crossing into Canada (the border is roughly 6 to 7 hours north via I-87) is allowed by many RVezy hosts as long as you let them know in advance so insurance coverage can be confirmed. Interstate travel is straightforward, with popular routes from Elmsford including Vermont (3 to 4 hours), Maine (5.5 to 6 hours), and Washington, D.C. (4.5 hours). One firm rule: travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance does not extend there. Pro tip: if you're aiming for Montreal or Quebec City, bring passports for everyone in your party and message the host at least a week before pickup to confirm cross-border details.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much should I budget for fuel on an Elmsford RV road trip?
Fuel is the second-biggest expense after the rental itself, but it's easy to plan for. Class C motorhomes around Elmsford typically get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), Class B campervans get 15 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (expect roughly 10 to 14 MPG while towing). New York gas prices tend to run higher than the national average, so consider filling up in upstate towns or across the border in Pennsylvania where prices often drop. For a weekend trip to the Catskills (about 300 miles round-trip), budget roughly $90 to $140 in fuel depending on your rig. Pro tip: use a fuel-price app and refuel in towns like Kingston or Newburgh on your way home for the best prices.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Elmsford?
For summer weekends, book your campground the moment your RV is reserved. New York State Parks and DEC campgrounds release sites up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and popular Hudson Valley spots like Harriman's Beaver Pond and Clarence Fahnestock fill that early window quickly for July and August. Croton Point Park is run by Westchester County and books through their parks department, often with shorter lead times. For shoulder-season trips in May, September, or October, you can usually grab a great site 2 to 4 weeks out. Pro tip: weeknight stays almost always have availability, even in peak summer, so a Sunday-to-Thursday Hudson Valley loop is an easy way to be spontaneous.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are local driving conditions like around Elmsford?
The most important Elmsford-specific tip: New York's scenic parkways (Saw Mill River, Taconic, Hutchinson River, Bronx River, Sprain Brook) prohibit commercial vehicles and have low bridges, meaning most motorhomes and trailers cannot legally use them. The good news: I-287, I-87 (NY Thruway), I-684, and Route 9 are all RV-friendly and connect you to anywhere you want to go. Traffic gets heavy heading north on Friday afternoons and southbound on Sunday evenings, so plan around those windows. Pro tip: use an RV-safe routing app like RV LIFE or AllStays to automatically avoid parkways and low clearances. It's a must for anyone driving anything bigger than a Class B campervan.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/Parkways%20Prohibited.pdfWhat amenities do nearby campgrounds offer for dumping and water fill-ups?
Most full-service RV campgrounds within an hour of Elmsford have what you need. Croton Point Park offers electric, water, and sewer hookups on its RV sites plus a dump station. Harriman's Beaver Pond Campground has potable water and a centralized dump station, though individual sites are non-hookup. Clarence Fahnestock State Park has water fill stations and a dump station for registered campers. If you need a dump-only stop on a longer Hudson Valley loop, many private campgrounds along I-87 (around New Paltz or Saugerties) offer dumping for a small fee. Pro tip: top off fresh water at your starting campground before driving to a no-hookup site, and you'll be set for 3 to 4 days of off-grid Hudson Valley exploring.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What's inside a typical Elmsford RV rental?
You'll be surprised how much is packed into a modern rental. A typical motorhome rental in Elmsford comes fully equipped: queen or king bed, convertible dinettes or bunks (Class C motorhomes often sleep 6 to 8), full kitchen with stove, fridge, and microwave, a bathroom with toilet and shower, air conditioning, furnace heat, and seatbelts for everyone traveling. Many include a TV, and some offer Wi-Fi hotspots, generators, or solar setups. Travel trailers are similarly outfitted minus the cab. Campervans are cozier but include a bed, kitchenette, and often a wet bath. Pro tip: check the listing's amenity list and message your host for a quick photo tour to see exactly how the kitchen is stocked. Many hosts include linens, dishes, and outdoor chairs.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elmsford,%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Add-ons are where you customize your Elmsford RV trip. Popular extras from local hosts include linen and kitchen kits, bikes, kayaks or SUPs, portable generators, camp chair and outdoor setup bundles, and pet cleaning fees if you're bringing your dog. Most hosts offer pickup at their home (often near Yonkers, White Plains, or Tarrytown) with a 60 to 90 minute orientation, and many offer delivery for a flat fee plus mileage. Mileage policies and generator hour limits are spelled out on each listing, so there are no surprises. Pro tip: bundle add-ons during booking rather than asking at pickup. It's faster, often cheaper, and ensures your host has everything ready to go.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Elmsford,%20New%20YorkHow do payment and the security deposit work for an Elmsford RV rental?
Payment is simple and fully handled through RVezy, with no cash, checks, or off-platform transfers needed. You pay the rental cost securely online when you book, and a refundable security deposit is placed as a hold on your card before pickup. The deposit amount is shown on every RV's listing page, so there are no surprises. As long as you return the RV in the condition you received it, refueled, and within your mileage and generator limits, the hold is released after your trip. Pro tip: do a quick walkaround video with your host at pickup and drop-off. It protects everyone and keeps your security deposit refund fast and painless.
