Campgrounds and RV parks near Great Neck, NY

Great Neck sits on the North Shore of Long Island, roughly 20 miles east of Midtown Manhattan. RV campers here trade wooded solitude for metro access: the closest overnight options are urban campgrounds on the edge of New York City, and the true state-park campgrounds require a drive of 40 to 90 minutes into Rockland County, the Hudson Highlands, or eastern Long Island. The nearest option historically has been Floyd Bennett Field in the Gateway National Recreation Area in Brooklyn, though the campground is currently closed, did not operate during the 2025 season, and the National Park Service is seeking a new concessionaire, with a reopening date uncertain. Across the harbor, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City offers full-hookup sites within transit distance of Manhattan. For a more traditional campground trip, RVers head north to Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park, east to Heckscher State Park on the Great South Bay, or up the Taconic to Pelton Pond in Clarence Fahnestock State Park. Expect a mix of paved urban sites, primitive state-park loops, and mid-size RV parks. Full hookups are rare inside the state-park system, so trip planning matters.

New York State Parks, including Beaver Pond, Heckscher, and Pelton Pond at Fahnestock, use the ReserveAmerica system. Reservations can be made for today and can be made up to 9 months in advance, so peak weekends should be booked the day the window opens. Floyd Bennett Field has historically been booked through Recreation.gov as a National Park Service campground, but the campground is currently closed, did not operate in 2025, and the Park Service is seeking a new concessionaire through a Request for Proposals process, with reopening uncertain. Liberty Harbor RV Park handles reservations directly through its own website and takes longer stays. For summer weekends, book Beaver Pond and Heckscher the day the 9-month window opens. Weekday and shoulder-season sites are far easier to secure.
