Campgrounds near Harrison, New York
Harrison sits in Westchester County, roughly 30 miles from Midtown Manhattan and within a two-hour drive of camping options that range from an urban RV park to Hudson Highlands state park campgrounds. There are no campgrounds inside Harrison itself, so RV travelers typically stage from parks in the Lower Hudson Valley, on Long Island, or across the Hudson in New Jersey.
The closest full-hookup RV option is Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City, an urban basecamp for visiting New York City. To the north, Beaver Pond Campground adjoins the Lake Welch Recreation Area within Harriman State Park and sits about 25 miles north of the George Washington Bridge. Farther up, Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park anchors a wooded campground along the park's rock ridges, with a portion of the Appalachian Trail running through the park.
South of the city, Floyd Bennett Field, part of Gateway National Recreational Area, offers a rare in-city campground on Jamaica Bay in Brooklyn. On Long Island, Heckscher State Park covers 1,600 acres on the south shore of Long Island used for picnicking, field sports, and paved multi-use trails.
Things to do near Harrison
Trip planning usually splits between city sightseeing and Hudson Valley outdoor time. From Liberty Harbor RV Park, ferries and the PATH train reach Lower Manhattan, and Liberty State Park is a short bike ride away.
Upstate, Harriman and Fahnestock deliver the region's best hiking and paddling. Harriman State Park has more than 200 miles of trails plus swimming, fishing, and paddling at Lake Welch near Beaver Pond. At Fahnestock, Canopus Lake has a sandy shore and picnic area, fishing in Stillwater and Canopus Lakes and the park's four ponds is excellent for bass, pickerel, perch, or brook and rainbow trout, and rowboats and kayaks are available for rental.
On Long Island, Heckscher State Park fronts the Great South Bay with bay swimming, a boat launch, and paved multi-use trails. Floyd Bennett Field offers hiking, biking, birding and historic tours of airports and forts, plus an outdoor archery range.

Camping season in the region runs primarily from spring through mid-fall, with the urban RV park operating year-round. State park campgrounds close for winter. Heckscher State Park campsites are open from mid-May to early September, and Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field is open April through October and offers tent and RV camping.
Summer weekends fill fast at the state parks. Harriman is a favored weekend getaway for New Yorkers, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Note that the Fahnestock campground is closed for the 2026 season to facilitate the construction of a new bathhouse, so plan around Beaver Pond, Heckscher, or Camp Gateway if visiting that year.
Winter brings a different set of activities but no camping upstate. The park is home to Fahnestock Winter Park, which includes 15 kilometers of groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, as well as an area for sledding. Snow, ice, and cold-weather closures make Liberty Harbor RV Park the practical winter base for the area.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book campgrounds near Harrison
New York state parks use one central platform. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival at campsites, reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, which applies to Beaver Pond, Heckscher, and Fahnestock alike.
Federal sites use a different portal. Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field is booked through Recreation.gov, and reservations can be made up to six months in advance online at Recreation.gov. Advance reservations are required at least a day in advance.
Private parks handle bookings directly. Liberty Harbor RV Park takes reservations by phone or through its own website, and booking well ahead is wise during peak tourist season when the surrounding ferry services and Manhattan hotels also see heavy demand.
What to expect
Hookups and site style vary widely. Liberty Harbor is essentially a paved marina lot with utilities, offering electric and water hookups in an urban setting. Upstate is more rustic. Beaver Pond offers campsites, some with a raised platform, and select sites can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 ft long, but there are no electrical hookups for trailers. At Fahnestock there are no hookups available or dump station, though restroom and shower facilities are centrally located.
RV size limits matter. Heckscher has space for RVs up to about 50 feet with a dump station, water spigots, and a communal bathroom with hot showers, while Beaver Pond caps at 30 feet. Pet rules also differ: pets are not permitted in Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch, and dogs are restricted at Heckscher's campground.
Expect black-bear protocols upstate, ticks on Long Island and in the woods, and city noise near Liberty Harbor. At Heckscher, the campground sits in a flat, open layout where sites share one large grassy area with minimal boundaries, and numbers are painted on the roadway rather than marked by physical dividers, so families seeking wooded seclusion should aim for Harriman or Fahnestock instead.

Good news: a standard New York driver's license (or any valid U.S. or Canadian license) is all you need to rent an RV in Harrison. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required for any motorhome or trailer on the RVezy platform, even the big Class A rigs. You'll just need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking, so there's no paperwork hassle at pickup. Visiting from overseas? Grab an International Driving Permit (IDP) from your home auto association before you fly in, usually for under $25, and you're set for your Harrison RV trip.

parks.westchestergov.com/camp-in-parks/general-camping-rules-and-regulationsWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Harrison?
Harrison enjoys a true four-season climate, and late spring through mid-fall is prime time for RV camping in Harrison. May through June brings mild 60-80°F days and blooming Hudson Valley landscapes, July and August are warm (often 80-90°F) and best for Long Island Sound beach trips, and late September through mid-October delivers New England's famous fall foliage with crisp 50-70°F days, perfect campfire weather. Winters can dip into the 20s with occasional snow, so most local campgrounds close from November to April. Insider tip: the last two weeks of September are the sweet spot, fewer crowds, lower prices, and the leaves just starting to turn upstate.
weather.gov/okx/I have never rented an RV before. Is renting an RV in Harrison really doable?
Yes, and you are going to love it. First time renting an RV is easier than most people expect, especially in Harrison where many hosts cater to NYC-area beginners. Every RVezy host gives you a full walkthrough at pickup covering the generator, slide-outs, propane, and waste tanks, and you can text or call them throughout your trip with questions. Travel trailers and Class C motorhomes are the most beginner-friendly options because they drive like a large van or pickup. Pro tip: book a host with a 4.8-plus star rating and reviews mentioning patient orientations, and consider RV delivery in Harrison for your very first trip so you can skip the driving entirely.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat if I break down or have an issue on the road?
You are never on your own. Every RVezy booking in Harrison includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, so help is one phone call away whether you are on the Saw Mill Parkway or deep in the Catskills. Roadside assistance covers issues like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing to the nearest qualified service center. Your host is also a great first contact for quick troubleshooting questions, and RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip. Save both numbers in your phone at pickup and you will have total peace of mind on the road.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Harrison RV rental into Canada or another state?
Multi-state RV trips are not only allowed, they're one of the best parts of renting in Harrison. From here you can easily drive into Connecticut (the border is 5 minutes away), New Jersey, Massachusetts, Vermont, or even up to Maine without any extra paperwork. Cross-border travel to Canada may be permitted depending on the specific host and their insurance, just message the host directly from the listing to confirm before booking. One important note: travel to Mexico is not allowed on any RVezy rental because insurance coverage doesn't extend there. With Harrison's interstate access, a multi-state New England loop is one of the most popular Northeast itineraries.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I plan for?
Plan smart and your fuel costs will stay manageable. Class B campervans average 18-22 MPG, Class C motorhomes get 8-12 MPG, Class A motorhomes run 6-10 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle but typically cut its MPG by 25-35%. As of 2026, regular gas in Westchester County averages around $3.50-$3.90 per gallon, slightly above the national average due to New York taxes. For a typical 3-day, 300-mile trip in a Class C, budget roughly $90-$140 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in nearby Connecticut or New Jersey when possible, gas there is often $0.30-$0.50 cheaper per gallon than in New York.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Harrison?
For the best campgrounds near Harrison, NY, book as early as you can, the Northeast camping season is short and demand is high. Westchester County Parks campgrounds (Croton Point, Mountain Lakes, Ward Pound Ridge) open reservations through their online system and summer weekends often sell out 2-3 months in advance. New York state parks like Clarence Fahnestock and Harriman use ReserveAmerica.com and accept reservations up to 9 months ahead, holiday weekends like Memorial Day and July 4th go almost instantly. Private parks like Black Bear Campground typically have more flexibility. Pro tip: lock in your campground first, then book your RV, since campgrounds are usually the harder reservation to get.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What's driving an RV around Harrison actually like?
Once you're out of the immediate NYC metro, driving an RV around Harrison is genuinely pleasant. The trick is knowing which roads to avoid: stay off the Hutchinson River, Merritt, Saw Mill, and Bronx River parkways, which all ban commercial vehicles and RVs due to low stone bridges (some as low as 7'7"). Stick to I-95, I-287, I-684, and I-84, which all accommodate RVs of any height. Traffic peaks weekdays 7-9 AM and 4-7 PM, so plan departures around those windows. Pro tip: punch your route into a truck-specific GPS app like CoPilot or Garmin RV to automatically avoid the parkways, this single step prevents the most common mistake first-time renters make in Westchester.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/parkway_restrict.htmlWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Harrison?
Campgrounds near Harrison range from full-service resorts to rustic county park sites, so you can match the experience to your comfort level. Croton Point Park offers 30-amp electric and water hookups (no sewer at the site), a dump station, hot showers, and flush toilets. Mountain Lakes Park has RV sites with full electric and water hookups plus a swimming pond. Black Bear Campground in Florida, NY provides full 30/50-amp hookups with sewer, two pools, laundry, and Wi-Fi. Most Westchester campgrounds have a centralized dump station and potable water fill, so plan to top off when you arrive and dump on the way out. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-amp-to-15-amp adapter for flexibility.
parks.westchestergov.com/find-a-park/croton-point-parkWhat is actually inside the RVs I will see on RVezy in Harrison?
Harrison RV rentals come fully equipped so you can roll out with just your clothes and food. Most motorhomes and travel trailers sleep 4 to 8 people and include a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, propane stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with both heat and air conditioning, seatbelt-equipped seating, and often a TV. Many hosts also include a generator for off-grid power, leveling blocks, and basic kitchenware. Wi-Fi varies, and some hosts offer a mobile hotspot as an add-on. Pro tip: check the listing photos and amenities list carefully, and message the host directly if you need something specific like a CPAP-friendly inverter or a kid-friendly bunk setup.

Common extras include delivery and setup (often $2 to $5 per mile), generator use, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, camping chairs and outdoor mats, bike racks, kayak or SUP add-ons, and pet cleaning fees if you are traveling with a dog. Mileage policies vary, some hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night while others offer RV rental with unlimited mileage for an upcharge, so read carefully if you are planning a longer loop. Pro tip: bundling delivery with a linen package often costs less than ordering them separately, just ask the host.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Harrison%2C+New+YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work for an RV rental in Harrison?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through RVezy with a credit or debit card at the time of booking, and your funds are held safely until after your trip begins, which protects both you and the host. The security deposit is held as a pre-authorization on your card, not actually charged, and released after a smooth return. To avoid any deposit issues, do a quick walkaround video at pickup, return the RV with the same fuel level, empty the waste tanks if required, and clean up after yourself. Pro tip: review the host's specific cleaning and fueling policies on the listing so there are no surprises at drop-off.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksIs there a cheap RV rental option for a quick weekend from Harrison?
Yes, finding a cheap RV rental in Harrison is very doable, especially if you are flexible. Smaller travel trailers and pop-ups often start around $95 to $130 per night, and a Class B campervan rental in Harrison can be a great middle-ground option for couples or small families at $150 to $200 per night. Book Sunday through Thursday to skip weekend premiums, look for hosts offering weekly discounts, and consider shoulder-season trips in April or October. A family RV trip from Harrison to a nearby campground like Croton Point can come in well under $700 all-in for a long weekend. Pro tip: filter by number of sleepers and price low-to-high to spot the best value listings instantly.
