Camping near Highland, New York
Highland sits on the west bank of the Hudson River in Ulster County, directly across from Poughkeepsie and anchored by the Walkway Over the Hudson pedestrian bridge. The hamlet works well as an RV base for the Mid-Hudson Valley, with quick access to Route 9W, the New York State Thruway (I-87), and the east-side parks reachable by the Mid-Hudson Bridge.
Campground options within a short drive cover most travel styles. Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park, part of Mills-Norrie State Park along with the adjoining Ogden and Ruth Livingston Mills State Park, is bounded on the west by the Hudson River and offers picnicking on the bluffs, two nine-hole golf courses, geocaching, hiking, biking, and wintertime sledding and cross-country skiing. The New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday in Plattekill is roughly 60 miles north of Manhattan and is big-rig friendly with pull-thru sites, 30/50-amp electrical hookups, water, sewer, cable, a swimming pool, playground, laundry, and a dump station.
Families also have Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Lazy River, plus Interlake RV Park & Campground and Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc for lake-oriented stays in the surrounding Dutchess County countryside.
Things to do around Highland
The Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park connects Highland to Poughkeepsie on foot or bike, and the adjoining Hudson Valley Rail Trail runs west toward New Paltz, linking to the longer Empire State Trail network. Riverfront parks, farm stands, and Hudson Valley wineries and cideries cluster along Route 9W.
Within about a half-hour drive are the Franklin D. Roosevelt Home National Historic Site, the Vanderbilt Mansion, and the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park. To the west, the Shawangunk Ridge and Mohonk Preserve offer serious hiking and climbing.
On-river activities are easy to arrange at Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park, where the Norrie Marina provides boat access and slips. The Jellystone lazy river and the KOA pools give kids water time on hot afternoons.

The Hudson Valley camping calendar runs roughly April through October, with peak demand from Memorial Day through Labor Day and a strong second peak during fall foliage in early to mid-October. The campground at Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park runs from late April through mid-October, offering tent sites, a small number of electric sites, platform sites, and cabins. The New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday operates from spring through the end of October.
Spring is cool and wet, with mud on unpaved sites and blackflies in wooded areas by May. Summer brings warm, humid days and afternoon thunderstorms, so reserve early for July and August weekends. Fall delivers the region’s signature color, cooler nights, and lighter bug pressure, but weekend sites near foliage routes book out weeks ahead.
Winter camping is limited. Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park itself remains open year-round from sunrise to sunset for day use, but most private RV parks in the area close or run on reduced services from November into spring.

How to book
New York state park campsites are booked through the ReserveAmerica portal. Reservations must be made one day ahead of arrival and can be made up to nine months in advance, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival. Booking can be done online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. The nine-month window means popular summer weekends at Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park open for booking in the fall and winter prior.
Private parks including the New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday, Yogi Bear’s Jellystone Park™ Camp-Resort: Lazy River, Interlake RV Park & Campground, and Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc take reservations directly through their own websites or phone lines. Holiday weekends, foliage weekends, and any dates tied to Hudson Valley festivals should be locked in as far in advance as the park allows.
What to expect on-site
Hookup availability varies widely. Private parks like the Newburgh KOA offer full hookups, cable, and Wi-Fi suitable for larger rigs, with pull-thrus that accommodate big rigs. State-park camping is more rustic. Recreational vehicles are welcome at Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park, but the park does not offer hookup facilities. There are a limited number of electric sites, water spigots are located throughout the campground rather than on individual sites, and there is a central comfort station with showers.
Sites at wooded Hudson Valley parks tend to be tight and shaded, so measure clearance and expect uneven pads. Cell coverage is generally solid along the Route 9 and 9W corridor and thinner in the hills west of the river. Black bears are present in the region, so store food and trash in the rig or in provided lockers.

For a cheaper RV rental in Highland, book midweek in April, May, or November and avoid the foliage peak in mid-October when prices climb. rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Highland%2C%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Highland, NY?
Good news for first time renters: a regular New York or out of state driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Highland. No commercial driver's license (CDL) or special RV endorsement is required for any motorhome, campervan, or travel trailer on the RVezy platform, even for larger Class A rigs. Approved drivers are generally 25 or older with a valid license, and you will confirm your ID securely through RVezy during booking. Visiting from abroad? Pair your home license with an International Driving Permit before you arrive.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs RV rental in Highland, NY covered by protection and roadside assistance?
Yes, every RV rental in Highland booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can explore the Hudson Valley with peace of mind. You choose your level of coverage at checkout, letting you match protection to your comfort level. If you get a flat on Route 9W or a dead battery at the Walkway Over the Hudson parking lot, one call dispatches help. Protection plans cover physical damage to the RV under defined terms and are not traditional auto insurance, but they remove the biggest worries that stop first timers from booking.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat if I need to cancel my Highland, NY RV trip?
Booking is low risk: RVezy applies a clear, platform-wide cancellation policy to every reservation, with refund amounts based on how far out your trip is when you cancel. Hosts do not set their own cancellation rules, which means consistent treatment across every motorhome rental in Highland. If a host cancels on you, RVezy helps with a refund or rebooking credit. Book early for fall foliage weekends in October, the busiest time here, and you will still have predictable flexibility if plans shift.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Highland, NY?
Absolutely, plenty of pet-friendly RV rental options in Highland, NY welcome dogs and cats. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter on RVezy and you'll see every host who allows four legged co-pilots, along with any pet fee they've set. Your dog will love the Hudson Valley: the 1.28 mile Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park is leash friendly, Franny Reese State Park has wooded trails right above the river, and the Hudson Valley Rail Trail starts steps from town. Pro tip: message the host before booking to confirm your specific breed, and pack a tick preventative since Ulster County deer ticks are active spring through fall.
parks.ny.gov/parks/walkwayoverthehudson/details.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campsite in Highland, NY?
Yes, RV delivery in Highland is one of the most popular options on RVezy, and it is a game changer for first time renters. Many local hosts will tow or drive the RV directly to a campground like Newburgh KOA, Rondout Valley Resort, or a private property in Ulster County, then level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before they leave. That means no backing a 30 foot rig into a tight site on day one. Use the Delivery filter to see hosts who offer this, and check each listing for delivery radius and fee, which is usually based on round trip mileage from their home base.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106634-Delivery-optionsHow far can I drive from Highland, NY on an RV trip?
You can reach an incredible variety of destinations from a Highland RV rental. Bear Mountain State Park is about 35 miles south, the Catskills around Phoenicia and Hunter Mountain are 30 to 50 miles northwest, Hyde Park and the FDR Presidential Library sit just across the Mid Hudson Bridge, and Lake George in the Adirondacks is roughly 160 miles up the Northway. New York City is about 85 miles south for a city to nature combo. Many hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles around $0.35 to $0.45. Look for RV rental with unlimited mileage listings if you are planning a longer Hudson Valley road trip from Highland.
parks.ny.gov/parks/bearmountain/details.aspxWhere are the best campgrounds near Highland, NY?
You are spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Highland. Newburgh KOA Holiday in Plattekill is the closest full hookup park with a pool and easy access to Route 9W. Rondout Valley Campground in Accord, about 25 miles west, offers big rig sites in the Catskills foothills. Lazy River Campground in Gardiner sits at the foot of the Shawangunks, and Mills Norrie State Park in Staatsburg has riverfront state run sites that book up fast. Interlake RV Park in Rhinebeck rounds out the options to the north. Reserve summer weekends two to three months ahead.
parks.ny.gov/parks/mills-norrie/details.aspxWhen is the best time for an RV trip from Highland, NY?
Late September through mid October is the magical window in the Hudson Valley, when foliage peaks and daytime highs sit in the comfortable 55 to 70 F range. May and June are gorgeous runner ups with apple blossoms, longer days, and temps around 65 to 80 F. July and August get warm (low to mid 80s F) and humid but deliver swimming at Berean Park and long river evenings. Winter RV trips are possible if you book a four season unit with heated tanks for snow near Hunter or Belleayre Mountain. Book foliage weekends by July, since Highland sits on one of the most popular leaf peeping corridors in the country.
weather.gov/aly/I have never driven an RV before. Will I be okay in Highland, NY?
You'll do great, and Highland is one of the friendlier areas in the Northeast for first time RV renters. Your host will give you a full walkthrough at pickup covering propane, water, slide outs, the generator, and dumping, and you can text them anytime during your trip with questions. Local roads like Route 9W and the New York State Thruway (I 87) are wide and well maintained, and you can stay on the west side of the Hudson to avoid tight Poughkeepsie streets. Skip narrow scenic roads like Mohonk Mountain House's drive in anything over 25 feet. Pro tip: book delivery for your first trip and let the host handle parking at your campground.
dot.ny.gov/What happens if something goes wrong with my RV near Highland?
Help is one call away, 24/7. Every RV rental in Highland includes round the clock roadside assistance as part of the RVezy protection plan, covering flats, jump starts, lockouts, fuel delivery, and towing. If you are stuck on the Thruway near Newburgh or on Route 28 heading into the Catskills, dispatch can reach you fast thanks to strong service coverage in the lower Hudson Valley. For RV system issues like a stuck slide or a quirky water pump, your host is your first text since they know their rig best. RVezy support is available before, during, and after your trip if anything escalates.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Highland, NY RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, most hosts welcome interstate trips, which is great because Highland sits within easy reach of five states. You can head to Vermont (Brattleboro is about 130 miles north), the Connecticut shoreline (around 100 miles), New Jersey, the Berkshires in Massachusetts (about 75 miles east), and Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains (about 80 miles southwest). Cross border trips to Canada like Montreal (around 320 miles) may be allowed depending on the host and protection plan, so message the host to confirm before booking. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Popular RV road trips from Highland include the Berkshires loop, the Adirondacks via Lake George, and Route 9W to Lake Champlain.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel economy and gas budget should I expect?
Plan smart and your fuel bill will be reasonable. A Class B campervan rental in Highland averages 18 to 22 MPG, a Class C motorhome runs 8 to 12 MPG, and a Class A or truck pulling a fifth wheel sits closer to 6 to 9 MPG. Regular gas in the Hudson Valley typically runs around $3.20 to $3.80 per gallon, with cheaper stations along Route 9W in Marlboro and Newburgh than on the Thruway. For a four day, 400 mile loop in a Class C, budget roughly $130 to $180 in fuel. Most local rentals take regular unleaded, but confirm with your host since some larger motorhomes use diesel.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Highland, NY?
For the smoothest trip, book your campground before locking in the RV when possible. New York State Parks like Mills Norrie, Bear Mountain, and North-South Lake release reservations up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and prime summer weekends fill within days. Private parks like Newburgh KOA and Rondout Valley book 2 to 3 months out for July, August, and foliage weekends. Midweek stays in spring and late fall are often available within a week of your trip. If state park sites are gone, check Hipcamp for private farms and orchards in Ulster and Dutchess Counties that welcome RVs, including Wilklow Orchards and DuBois Farms right in Highland.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like around Highland, NY?
Driving conditions are RV friendly for most of the year. The New York State Thruway (I-87) and US 9W are the main routes, both with wide lanes and reasonable grades. Watch for parkway restrictions: the Taconic State Parkway and Palisades Interstate Parkway prohibit commercial vehicles and large RVs, so route through the Thruway or Route 9W instead. Mid Hudson Bridge tolls are cashless and higher for larger rigs. Winter (December to March) can bring snow and black ice on Catskills roads, so check 511NY before heading west on Route 28. Avoid the Newburgh Beacon Bridge area at Friday evening rush hour.
511ny.org/What amenities do campgrounds near Highland, NY offer?
You will find a great mix. Full hookup parks like Newburgh KOA and Rondout Valley Campground provide 30/50 amp electric, water, sewer, Wi-Fi, pools, laundry, and propane refills on site. State campgrounds like Mills Norrie and Bear Mountain typically offer electric only sites without sewer hookups, shared dump stations, potable water spigots, and clean bathhouses with hot showers. Many private parks have camp stores, playgrounds, and weekend activities. For dumping mid trip, several private parks allow non guests to use their dump station for a small fee. Fill fresh water before leaving Highland, since Catskill state sites sometimes have spigots far from your pad.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What's inside a typical RV rental in Highland, NY?
You will feel right at home. Most RV rentals in Highland come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, convertible dinette and sofa beds, a kitchen with fridge, stovetop, microwave, sink, cookware, and dishes, a bathroom with toilet and shower, climate control with furnace and air conditioning, and built in water and waste tanks. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes often include a flat screen TV, onboard generator, awning, and outdoor speakers. Travel trailers and fifth wheels usually require a truck with the right hitch and brake controller, so ask your host. Seatbelted seating ranges from 2 in a small campervan rental in Highland to 6 or 7 in a family Class C. Many listings now offer Wi-Fi hotspots and solar as add ons.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Highland%2C%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and pickup options can I expect when I rent an RV in Highland?
Hosts make it easy to customize your trip. Common add ons for an RV rental in Highland include linen and kitchen packages ($30 to $75), camp chairs and outdoor rugs ($20 to $40), portable generators ($25 to $50 per night), bike racks, kayaks, propane fire pits, and pet cleaning fees ($25 to $75). Pickup is usually at the host's home in Highland or a nearby town like New Paltz, Marlboro, or Lloyd, with delivery available to most Hudson Valley campgrounds for a per mile fee. Mileage policies typically include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with some hosts offering unlimited mileage packages, ideal for a long Hudson Valley loop. Always confirm pickup and drop off windows so you do not miss check in.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Highland%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and fully handled inside RVezy: you pay by credit card at booking, with the rental cost typically split into an initial payment and a balance due before your trip starts. A refundable security deposit (usually $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV) is pre authorized on your card before pickup, separate from the booking payment, and released after you return the rig clean and undamaged. To avoid deposit issues, take date stamped photos at pickup and drop off, top off fuel and propane before returning, and empty the gray and black tanks if your host requires it. Never pay a host outside the RVezy platform, since doing so voids your protection coverage.
