Camping near Hillburn, New York
Hillburn sits in the Ramapo Mountains of Rockland County, just north of Suffern and minutes from the New York and New Jersey state line. The village is surrounded by protected public land, which puts a mix of state park campgrounds, private RV parks, and rustic scout-style sites within a short drive. Campers based here can reach Manhattan in under an hour while still parking the rig under hardwood forest.
The closest full campground is Beaver Pond Campground - Harriman State Park, which adjoins Lake Welch and offers tent, trailer, and smaller RV sites. Camp Wyanokie and Wawayanda State Park sit across the border in the New Jersey Highlands, and Black Bear Campground in Florida, New York is a common pick for families who want hookups and pool amenities.
For renters who want to stage a New York City visit from the rig, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is the closest urban option, with a PATH connection into Lower Manhattan.
Things to do around Hillburn
Harriman State Park is the main draw. The park covers roughly 47,000 acres with more than 200 miles of trails, 31 lakes, and swimming beaches at Lake Welch and Lake Tiorati, all reachable from Beaver Pond Campground - Harriman State Park. Bear Mountain State Park sits on the northeastern edge and adds a zoo, a summit drive, and Hudson River views.
Across the state line, Wawayanda State Park offers boat rentals, a swim beach on Wawayanda Lake, and an extensive trail network, including a section of the Appalachian Trail. Camp Wyanokie provides rugged access into the Norvin Green State Forest for hiking.
Day trips from a Hillburn base cover Sleepy Hollow, West Point, and the Palisades along the Hudson. Liberty Harbor RV Park puts Ellis Island, Liberty State Park, and Lower Manhattan within walking or ferry distance.

The camping season in the Hudson Valley and New Jersey Highlands runs roughly April through October. Beaver Pond Campground - Harriman State Park is typically open April into mid-October, and Wawayanda State Park camping runs April 1 to October 31. Private parks like Black Bear Campground and Liberty Harbor RV Park operate on longer seasons, and some accept rigs year-round with reduced services in winter.
Spring brings mud, blackflies in the higher elevations, and swollen streams, but also wildflowers and quieter trails. Summer is peak: warm lake swimming, long daylight, and heavy weekend demand, especially at Beaver Pond because of its short drive from New York City. Biting insects and afternoon thunderstorms are routine.
Fall is the strongest overall window. Foliage in the Ramapo and Highlands peaks in mid to late October, humidity drops, and bugs disappear. Winter shuts most public campgrounds; cross-country skiing and snowshoeing continue on park trails when snow cover allows.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. How to book campgrounds near Hillburn
Public campgrounds in this region use two separate reservation systems. New York state parks, including Beaver Pond, book through ReserveAmerica. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites becoming available at the 9-month window at 8 a.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. on weekends from March 15 through Labor Day. Same-day reservations at New York state park campgrounds are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival.
New Jersey state parks, including Wawayanda, book through the state's own portal at camping.nj.gov.
Private parks such as Black Bear Campground and Liberty Harbor RV Park take reservations directly on their websites. Summer holiday weekends fill first, so book those dates as soon as the window opens.
What to expect on the ground
Sites in this area lean rustic rather than resort. Beaver Pond offers campsites, some with a raised platform, for up to two tents and six persons per site, and select sites can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 feet long. Each site has a picnic table and fire ring with a flip-top grill, and there are shared full-service bathrooms centrally located, plus a dump station for RVs. There are no electrical hookups for trailers at Beaver Pond, alcohol is not permitted, and pets are not allowed in the campground or at Lake Welch.
Wawayanda is even more basic: water is not available at campsites and must be carried from the main office building, and there are no shower facilities. Private parks like Black Bear Campground and Liberty Harbor RV Park fill the gap with full hookups, showers, laundry, and pet-friendly policies. Cell service is reliable near the interstates and spotty deep inside Harriman.
