Campgrounds near Hillcrest, New York
Hillcrest sits in Rockland County, roughly 25 miles north of the George Washington Bridge and within easy driving distance of Harriman State Park, the Hudson Highlands, and the New Jersey Highlands. The area gives RV travelers access to two state park systems (New York and New Jersey) plus private RV parks, so trips can mix hookup camping with rustic state park sites.
Beaver Pond Campground sits within the 46,000-acre Harriman State Park in Rockland County, directly adjacent to the Lake Welch Recreation Area, and is one of the closest reservation-based campgrounds to Hillcrest. To the southwest, Camp Wyanokie and Wawayanda State Park serve the northern New Jersey Highlands, while Black Bear Campground in Florida, NY offers full-hookup RV sites.
Further north into Putnam County, Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock State Park anchors a large network of hiking and paddling terrain. Together these options cover a wide range of styles, from primitive tent-friendly sites with no hookups to year-round full-service RV parks.
Things to do near Hillcrest
Hiking dominates the region. Harriman State Park has more than 200 miles of trails ranging from easy to strenuous, 31 lakes, two beaches, and lake activities including swimming, fishing, paddling, boating, ice fishing, and ice skating. A section of the Appalachian Trail roughly eight to nine miles long passes through Clarence Fahnestock, giving through-hikers and day-hikers direct access from the Pelton Pond area.
Swimming beaches at Lake Welch and Canopus Lake operate seasonally with lifeguards on duty. Rowboats and kayaks are available for rent at Fahnestock, and fishing is productive across the region's lakes and stocked trout streams, with bass, pickerel, perch, and brook and rainbow trout on offer.
For families, Black Bear Campground includes on-site amenities geared to RV travelers, while Camp Wyanokie and the surrounding Norvin Green State Forest offer rustic hiking loops with views toward the Wanaque Reservoir and, on clear days, the Manhattan skyline.

State park campgrounds in this region are seasonal. Beaver Pond typically opens in mid-April for walk-in camping only through early May, with the regular reservation season running from early May through mid-October. Wawayanda State Park's group campsites are open April 1 through October 31, and Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock follows a similar spring-to-mid-October window, though periodic facility construction can close the campground for a full season, so it is worth checking the reservation portal before planning a trip.
Summer weekends fill quickly given the proximity to New York City. Harriman is roughly an hour's drive from New York City and is a favored weekend getaway, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Fall brings strong foliage across the Hudson Highlands through October, and cooler nights thin out the crowds.
Winter camping options in this specific area are limited to private year-round RV parks. Black Bear Campground operates year-round with full hookups, making it the practical choice from late fall through early spring.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book
New York State Park campgrounds, including Beaver Pond and Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock, use the Reserve America platform. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance, with sites becoming available at the 9-month window at 8AM Monday through Friday and 9AM on weekends from March 15 through Labor Day, and at 9AM daily the rest of the year. From mid-May to early October, same-day reservations are permitted only until 3PM, and walk-ins are permitted after 3PM subject to availability.
Wawayanda and other New Jersey state park sites are booked online at camping.nj.gov. Note that Wawayanda offers group campsites only, with a seven-person minimum. Private RV parks such as Black Bear take reservations directly through the operator. Camp Wyanokie is administered by a local commission and reserved through its own website.
What to expect
Facilities vary widely. Beaver Pond has 125 campsites that accommodate up to two tents and six people per site, with select sites able to handle trailers or RVs up to 30 feet long. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring with a flip-top grill, and the campground offers full-service bathrooms with showers, laundry, and a dump station, but no electrical hookups. Pets are not permitted at Beaver Pond or Lake Welch, and only one vehicle is allowed at each campsite.
Camp Wyanokie is a rustic area that cannot accommodate RVs and has no running water, flush toilets, electricity, or WiFi, only latrines, fire pits, and charcoal grills across roughly 150 acres of woodlands. Wawayanda's group sites also have no showers, and water must be carried from the main office. Black Bear Campground caters to RVs only, with pull-throughs and full hookups, and no tent camping. Black bears do inhabit Harriman and Bear Mountain, so food should be hung or stored in a canister.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Hillcrest, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Hillcrest, NY?
RV rental in Hillcrest is more affordable than most travelers expect, especially compared to NYC metro hotels. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $90 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes range from $175 to $275 per night, and larger Class A motorhomes start around $250 and up. Booking midweek and during shoulder seasons (April, May, September, and October) is the easiest way to find a cheap RV rental in Hillcrest. Pro tip: families heading to Harriman State Park often save the most by renting a travel trailer and having the host deliver it directly to the campsite, skipping fuel and towing costs entirely.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hillcrest%2C%20New%20YorkDo I need a special license to rent an RV in Hillcrest?
Good news: for nearly every RV you'll rent in Hillcrest, your regular Class D driver's license is all you need. New York only requires an 'R' endorsement for recreational vehicles with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, and virtually every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on RVezy falls well below that threshold. You'll need to be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID right through the platform during checkout. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP) and you're ready to roll. Most first-time renters are amazed at how simple it is.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/driver-license-class-descriptionsWhat protection or insurance is included with my RV rental in Hillcrest, NY?
Every RV rental in Hillcrest booked through RVezy includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you can hit the road with real peace of mind. You choose your protection level at checkout (not the host), and the plan covers most damage to the RV during your trip up to the limits of the tier you select. Roadside assistance is bundled with every protection plan, covering breakdowns, tire changes, jump starts, and towing. Pro tip: bumping up to a higher protection tier for a trip into the Catskills or Adirondacks is a small price to pay for confidence on winding mountain roads.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if I need to cancel my Hillcrest RV rental?
Booking is low risk because RVezy sets a standardized cancellation policy for every reservation, not individual hosts. The policy includes a grace period after booking during which you can cancel for a full refund, and refund eligibility after that depends on how far out your trip is. Because the policy is platform-wide, you won't see it displayed on individual listings. If a host cancels on you, RVezy will help you rebook or issue a refund or travel credit. Pro tip: book your Hillcrest RV trip early to lock in the best rigs for Harriman State Park weekends, and use the grace period to confirm your campground reservation before you fully commit.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a Hillcrest RV trip?
Absolutely. Pet-friendly RV rental in Hillcrest is easy to find on RVezy: toggle the 'Pet Friendly' filter and you'll see plenty of rigs whose hosts welcome four-legged guests. Some hosts ask for a small pet fee or additional cleaning charge, which is clearly shown before you book. Once you're on the road, Rockland County is very dog friendly: Harriman State Park allows leashed dogs on most trails, Rockland Lake State Park has wide-open paths great for an easy stroll, and Nyack's riverfront has many dog-welcoming cafes. Pro tip: message the host before booking if your dog is larger or a breed they may have questions about; most are flexible when given a heads-up.
parks.ny.gov/regulations/Can the RV be delivered to me in Hillcrest?
Yes, RV delivery in Hillcrest is one of the most popular options for first-time renters. Many RVezy hosts will drive the rig to your driveway, your campsite at Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman State Park, or another nearby campground, then level it, hook up water and electric, and walk you through every system before they leave. Use the 'Delivery' filter when searching to see hosts who offer this service. Delivery fees usually scale with distance and are clearly shown on each listing. Pro tip: if you've never towed before, delivery is a game changer: you skip the highway driving entirely and start your Hillcrest RV trip already set up at camp.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hillcrest%2C%20New%20YorkHow far can I drive on an RV road trip from Hillcrest?
Hillcrest is one of the best RV road trip launch pads on the East Coast. From Hillcrest you can reach Harriman State Park in about 25 minutes, Bear Mountain State Park in roughly 35 minutes, the Catskills (Phoenicia and Hunter) in about 90 minutes to two hours, the Poconos in PA in around 90 minutes, and Lake George in the Adirondacks in roughly 3.5 to 4 hours. Want something coastal? Cape Cod is about 5 to 6 hours east. Each RVezy listing clearly shows the host's daily mileage allowance, and some hosts offer RV rental with unlimited mileage. Pro tip: filter by 'Unlimited Mileage' if you're planning a longer loop through New England.
iloveny.com/places-to-go/hudson-valley/Where are the best campgrounds near Hillcrest for an RV trip?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Hillcrest include Beaver Pond Campground inside Harriman State Park (about 25 minutes away, with electric and non-electric sites and beautiful lake views), Sebago Cabins in the Harriman area for rustic stays, Black Bear Campground in Florida, NY (about 35 minutes north, with full hookups and family amenities), and the Newburgh KOA Holiday (around 45 minutes north, with pull-through sites and a pool). For a Hudson River view, Croton Point Park is about 40 minutes away. Pro tip: Harriman fills up fast on summer weekends, so reserve as early as possible through the New York State Parks reservation system.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/When is the best time of year for an RV trip from Hillcrest?
Late spring through mid-fall is prime time for RV camping in Hillcrest, with two standout windows. May and June bring 65 to 80F days, blooming dogwoods, and lighter crowds. September and October are arguably even better: temperatures usually stay in the 55 to 75F range, humidity drops, and the Hudson Valley foliage turns brilliant reds and golds. July and August can reach the upper 80s with humidity, so look for an RV with strong air conditioning. Winters can be cold (often 20 to 35F) and some campgrounds close, but a handful stay open year-round. Pro tip: target the first two weekends of October for a Hillcrest RV trip to catch peak foliage in Harriman State Park.
weather.gov/okx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You're going to love it, and you won't be on your own. Every RVezy host provides a full walkthrough at pickup or delivery covering the kitchen, bathroom, slide-outs, generator, leveling, and dump procedures, and they're just a message away during your trip. Most first-time renters in Hillcrest pick a Class C motorhome (drives much like a large van) or have a travel trailer delivered so they skip towing entirely. The roads around Hillcrest are well maintained and straightforward once you're past the immediate NYC metro. Pro tip: spend your first night close to home (Harriman State Park is only about 25 minutes away) so you can get comfortable with the systems before any longer driving day.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if something goes wrong on the road?
You're covered around the clock. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so a flat tire on the Palisades Parkway, a dead battery at Bear Mountain, or a tow off the Thruway is just a phone call away. You'll also have your host's direct contact, and most hosts are quick to help troubleshoot things like the water pump, generator, or slide-out. RVezy's customer support team is available before, during, and after your trip. Pro tip: record a quick video of the host's walkthrough at pickup so you can rewatch the generator start-up sequence or other steps on the road if needed.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Hillcrest RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes, interstate travel is standard. From Hillcrest you can easily cross into New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Massachusetts, or Vermont with no special paperwork; popular routes include the Poconos loop, the Berkshires, and Acadia National Park in Maine. Cross-border travel to Canada is possible on many RVezy rentals (think Montreal or the Thousand Islands), but you'll want to message the host before booking to confirm and to align on any required paperwork. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because insurance coverage does not extend there. Pro tip: bring your passport even for U.S. trips since some hosts request it as a secondary ID at pickup.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on a Hillcrest RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, so it's smart to plan ahead. New York gas prices typically run a bit above the national average; expect roughly $3.40 to $3.90 per gallon in the Hillcrest area. A Class B campervan rental in Hillcrest will get you 18 to 22 MPG, a Class C motorhome averages 8 to 12 MPG, and a Class A around 6 to 10 MPG. A travel trailer's MPG depends on your tow vehicle, usually a 20 to 30% hit. Pro tip: fill up in Rockland County before heading into Manhattan or Westchester, where prices jump noticeably, and use GasBuddy to find the cheapest stations along the Thruway.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Hillcrest?
Book early to get your pick of the best sites. New York State Parks (including Harriman's Beaver Pond and Sebago) open reservations up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and summer weekends at Harriman often fill within days of opening. For July 4th, Labor Day, and peak fall foliage weekends (late September through mid-October), aim to book 4 to 6 months out. Private parks like the Newburgh KOA and Black Bear Campground usually have more last-minute availability, especially midweek. Pro tip: if you strike out at Beaver Pond, try a Sunday-through-Thursday stay; sites open up dramatically and Harriman feels half-empty compared to weekends.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What's it like driving an RV around Hillcrest and the NYC metro area?
Honest truth: you'll want to drive away from NYC, not into it. Hillcrest sits just off the Palisades Interstate Parkway, but that parkway bans commercial vehicles and many larger RVs, so use Route 59, I-87 (the Thruway), or Route 17 instead. Also avoid the Saw Mill, Hutchinson, and Bronx River parkways: low bridges (some under 8 feet) are a serious hazard for RVs. Within about 20 to 25 minutes of Hillcrest you're on rural roads heading into Harriman or up toward the Catskills. Pro tip: if NYC-area driving makes you nervous, book delivery; many local hosts will bring the RV straight to your campsite so you never have to navigate a parkway.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/NYSDOT_Truck_Route_Map.pdfWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Hillcrest?
You'll find a great mix. Private parks like the Newburgh KOA and Black Bear Campground offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, laundry, pools, and on-site dump stations. State parks like Harriman's Beaver Pond offer electric sites, potable water fill stations, hot showers, flush toilets, and a dump station near the entrance, though Wi-Fi and individual sewer hookups are rare. Most campgrounds within an hour of Hillcrest sell firewood and ice on-site. Pro tip: top off fresh water and dump tanks before leaving Harriman because the next convenient dump station heading north is at the Newburgh KOA, roughly 40 miles up the Thruway.
parks.ny.gov/parks/harriman/What's actually inside the RVs I can rent in Hillcrest?
More than you'd expect. Motorhome rental in Hillcrest typically includes a queen or king bed, a full kitchen (fridge, freezer, stove, microwave, sink), a bathroom with shower and toilet, dinette seating that converts to a bed, climate control (AC and furnace), and seatbelted seats for travel. Many rigs add a TV, Bluetooth stereo, outdoor speakers, a backup camera, solar, and a generator for off-grid stays. Wi-Fi isn't always built in, but plenty of hosts include a mobile hotspot as an add-on. Pro tip: filter by 'Sleeps 6' or higher for a family RV trip in Hillcrest; you'll get a rig with bunks plus a convertible dinette so kids can sprawl out.
nhtsa.gov/road-safety/recreational-vehiclesWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
RVezy hosts in Hillcrest offer a wide range of helpful add-ons: camping chairs and tables, bedding and linen packages, kitchen kits, generators, bike racks, kayaks, and even pre-stocked propane and fresh water. Pickup is usually at the host's home, but many hosts will meet you at a nearby park-and-ride or deliver the rig directly to your campground. Mileage policies vary by listing: many include a set number of free miles per day with a per-mile fee beyond that, and some advertise unlimited mileage for longer trips. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a generator add-on for a stress-free first-night arrival at Harriman State Park; you'll be relaxing by the fire while everyone else is still leveling jacks.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hillcrest%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay RVezy directly with a credit card during booking, never in cash to the host. The security deposit is separate from the booking payment and is held as an authorization on your card (not a charge), then released after your trip assuming the RV comes back in the same condition you received it. The exact deposit amount is shown on the listing before you book. Pro tip: take a quick video walkaround of the RV at both pickup and drop-off; it's the easiest way to document condition and help ensure your deposit is released promptly.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksCan I rent an RV in Hillcrest during the winter?
Yes, winter RVing is absolutely an option, and many renters love it. A number of RVezy hosts in the Hillcrest area keep their rigs available year-round, especially four-season units with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and stronger furnaces. Beaver Pond Campground at Harriman closes seasonally, but private parks like Black Bear Campground and several Catskills properties stay open with electric hookups. Expect temperatures between roughly 20 and 40F from December through February, with occasional snow. Pro tip: filter for rigs that mention 'four-season' or 'heated tanks,' plan to use shore power for the furnace, and consider a trip to Hunter Mountain or Windham for ski-area RV camping: it's a magical (and uncrowded) way to do a Hillcrest RV trip.
