Campgrounds near Hillside, New York
Hillside sits in the western Hudson Valley of New York's Ulster County, within easy reach of the Catskill Park and the Hudson River corridor. The area gives RV travelers access to both public and private campgrounds, ranging from state-run sites along the river to wooded family parks in the foothills.
Within roughly an hour's drive, options include New Life Campground, Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds Inc, and So-Hi Campgrounds on the private side, plus Camp Goat Hill for a smaller-scale stay. On the state side, Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park in Staatsburg is part of the larger Mills-Norrie complex that adjoins Ogden Mills and Ruth Livingston Mills Memorial State Park, together comprising more than 1,000 acres along the Hudson.
The surrounding region combines river frontage, Catskill peaks, and small Hudson Valley towns, which makes Hillside a practical base for trips that mix hiking, fishing, and day drives to villages like Woodstock, Rhinebeck, and Kingston.
Things to do near Hillside
The Hudson River drives much of the recreation east of Hillside. At Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park, an on-site marina provides boating and fishing access, and trails are ideal for walking, jogging, hiking, cycling, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The adjoining Mills park adds geocaching, hiking and biking, plus a sledding hill on the lawn of the Mills estate and two nine-hole golf courses that open for cross-country skiers in winter.
West of Hillside, the Catskill Forest Preserve opens up. The Esopus Creek near Phoenicia is a well-known trout stream and tubing spot, and the Slide Mountain Wilderness offers foot-only trails to the highest Catskill peaks.
Family-oriented private parks such as Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds Inc and So-Hi Campgrounds add pools, playgrounds, and organized activities for kids between hikes and drives.

The core RV season in this part of New York runs roughly late spring through mid-fall. Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park operates on a seasonal camping schedule tied to the state parks system, and the adjoining Mills park day-use areas are generally open April through October, weather permitting. Private parks such as Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds Inc typically follow a similar spring-to-fall window.
Summer is peak season. Weekends fill quickly at both state and private campgrounds, and reservations well in advance are the norm. Early fall brings foliage traffic across the Catskills and Hudson Valley, with weekend demand often stronger than midweek.
Winter narrows options sharply. Most private campgrounds close, and while the Mills-Norrie grounds remain open year-round from sunrise to sunset for day use, camping does not operate through the cold months. Shoulder seasons in April and November can be wet and cold, with lingering snow possible in higher elevations to the west.

We had a great experience renting from Krystal and her husband. They were responsive, helpful, and very accommodating from start to finish. The camper was a perfect solution for hosting our out-of-town guests and provided the extra space we needed. We would gladly rent from them again in the future.

Booking and how-to at Hillside
Reservations at Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park go through ReserveAmerica and can be made up to 9 months in advance. Sites become available at the 9-month window at these times: March 15 through Labor Day, 8AM Monday-Friday and 9AM Saturday and Sunday; the day after Labor Day through March 14, 9AM daily. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites only. Bookings can also be made through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
RVs are welcome at Norrie, but the park does not offer full hookups aside from a limited number of electric sites. Private options such as New Life Campground, Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds Inc, Camp Goat Hill, and So-Hi Campgrounds handle bookings directly through their own websites or phone lines, and full hookups are more commonly available.
Stay length at state sites is capped: a camping party and its equipment may occupy a site for a maximum of 14 continuous nights, after which the party must leave the facility for 48 hours before registering again.
What to expect near Hillside
Sites in this area lean wooded. At Margaret Lewis Norrie State Park, expect a forested setting with water spigots located throughout the campground but not on individual sites. There is a central comfort station with showers and toilets serving both cabins and campsites. Sites can be close together on busy weekends, which makes it family-friendly but not especially private.
Private parks such as Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds Inc cover larger acreage in the Catskill foothills and offer a mix of RV sites, tent sites, and cabins. Amenities vary by park but often include pools, playgrounds, laundry, and small stores.
Firewood rules matter here. New York restricts movement of untreated firewood to a 50-mile radius from source, so bring certified heat-treated wood or buy locally. Also plan for pets on leash, quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. at state sites, and standard bear-country food storage in the Catskill portions of the region.

Wilson Campground in Mount Tremper, Sam's Point area campgrounds near Gardiner, or a private property near Hillside. Delivery fees typically run a few dollars per mile round trip, set by each host. help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityWhat kind of fuel mileage should I expect and how much will gas cost?

For a typical 4-day, 250-mile loop in a Class C, budget roughly $90-$140 in fuel. Earlier is always better, especially for the popular spots. New York State campgrounds, including Kenneth L. Private parks like Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds and Thousand Trails Rondout Valley typically take bookings 3-6 months out and have more last-minute flexibility. For fall foliage weekends (last week of September through mid-October), book by July at the latest. Pro tip: weekday arrivals (Sunday-Wednesday) are far easier to secure and often $10-$20 per night cheaper at private campgrounds around Hillside.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are the driving conditions like around Hillside, NY?
Driving an RV around Hillside is very manageable as long as you plan your route. The area sits in the southern Catskills with rolling, winding two-lane roads like Route 209, Route 28, and Route 28A, scenic but with some grades and curves. Avoid narrow, steep options like Platte Clove Road in any large RV, as they have hairpin turns and tight clearances unsuitable for motorhomes. Stick to main routes like I-87 (the New York State Thruway), US-209, and NY-28. Winter brings snow and ice from December through March, so most renters travel May through October. Pro tip: download offline maps before your trip, cell service drops in the deeper Catskill valleys around Slide Mountain.

Private parks like Rip Van Winkle Campgrounds and Thousand Trails Rondout Valley in nearby Accord provide 30/50-amp electric, water, sewer, hot showers, laundry, Wi-Fi, and dump stations. New York State campgrounds like Kenneth L. Wilson and North-South Lake are more rustic, expect electric and water at many RV sites but usually no sewer hookups (use the on-site dump station). Potable water fill-up is typically available at registration. Pro tip: keep a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-amp-to-50-amp adapter in the rig, many Catskill sites have utility posts placed at the back of the pad.

Climate-wise, you'll have roof air conditioning, a furnace, and often a generator for off-grid power. Many listings include a flat-screen TV, Bluetooth stereo, and outdoor awning; some hosts add Wi-Fi hotspots, outdoor grills, or kayaks as add-ons. Seatbelted passenger counts are noted on each listing. Pro tip: filter by Sleeps and the specific amenities you need (generator, outdoor kitchen, bike rack) to narrow listings fast.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hillside%2C%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and pickup options are available with my RV rental?
You've got plenty of flexibility. Common add-ons from Hillside-area hosts include linen and bedding packages, kitchen kits, camp chairs and outdoor rugs, portable grills, generators, bike racks, kayaks, and stocked propane tanks. Pickup is usually at the host's address, but many offer delivery to nearby Catskill campgrounds, typically priced per mile round trip and set by each host. Mileage policies vary by host (100-150 free miles per day is typical, with some offering unlimited mileage for in-state trips). Use Instant Book listings if you want to skip the approval step. Pro tip: bundle delivery, setup, and a stocked kitchen for your first booking, it converts a Hillside, NY RV trip into a near-turnkey vacation.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hillside%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure: you pay through the RVezy platform with a credit card at booking, never directly to the host in cash. Your total includes the nightly rate, taxes, RVezy service fee, the protection plan you selected, and any add-ons. A refundable security deposit (commonly several hundred to a couple thousand dollars depending on the rig) is placed as a hold on your card before pickup and released after the host confirms the RV came back in good shape. To avoid issues: do a thorough walk-around video at pickup and drop-off, return the rig with fuel and propane at the same level it left, and use the dump station before returning. Pro tip: keep all communication inside the RVezy app, it's your record if any questions come up later.
