Camping near Hornell, New York
Hornell sits in Steuben County in New York's Southern Tier, within easy reach of the Finger Lakes, the western Catskills foothills, and the Genesee Valley. The area draws RV travelers with a mix of private family campgrounds, county recreation areas, and one of the region's best-known state park campgrounds. Most sites are within a 30-minute drive of Interstate 86 and State Route 17.
The closest options include Sun Valley Campsites in Arkport, a family- and pet-friendly campground on 180 scenic acres with cabins and a variety of RV and tent sites, and Sugar Creek Glen Campground near Dansville, bordered by creeks with on-site waterfalls. Farther out, Lake Demmon Recreation Area in Bath offers full-hookup RV sites on a 48-acre lake, and Skybrook Campground rounds out the private options.
For a public-land experience, Stony Brook State Park Campground near Dansville has 88 campsites and eight rustic cabins in a wooded setting above a gorge, roughly a 25-minute drive north of Hornell.
Things to do around Hornell
The signature draw is Stony Brook State Park, known for its rugged gorge and three waterfalls with plunge pools, and short but challenging hiking trails with views of the gorge, falls, rock formations, and cliffs. The park's North Entrance has a picnic area, grills, a playground, a stream-fed swimming pool, and access to the hiking trails, making it a solid full-day stop for families. Note that swimming and wading in the gorge itself is prohibited.
On the water, Lake Demmon is stocked with bass, pickerel, bluegill, and bullhead, with canoe, rowboat, and paddle boat rentals; personal boats are limited to 14 feet and 50 horsepower, and jet skis are not allowed. ATV riders can access more than 20 miles of nearby trails from the campground. Sun Valley features on-site waterfalls and a swimming pool, and the surrounding Finger Lakes wine trails, Corning Museum of Glass, and Watkins Glen State Park are all within about an hour's drive.

The Hornell area has a short, busy camping season. Stony Brook State Park Campground is generally open May through October, and during the winter season most areas of the park are closed, including the South Entrance, playgrounds, playfields, and hiking trails, remaining closed until the following spring after cleanup and safety inspections. The North Entrance stays open year round for walking through the picnic area.
Summer is peak season. Private campgrounds such as Sun Valley run events every weekend from early May to mid-October, and holiday weekends fill months in advance. Lake Demmon Recreation Area operates from May through mid-October, matching the general regional pattern.
Shoulder-season trips in late spring and September bring cooler nights, thinner crowds, and better site availability. Check trail and swimming pool status before arrival, since gorge conditions and flood damage have affected access in some seasons.
How to book a site
State park sites use the New York State Parks reservation system through ReserveAmerica. Bookings may be made up to nine months in advance, and same-day reservations are allowed until 3pm on the day of arrival. A camping party may occupy a site for a maximum of 14 continuous nights, after which the party and equipment must leave the facility for 48 hours before registering again.
For Stony Brook State Park specifically, reservations can be made online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. Private campgrounds like Sun Valley Campsites, Sugar Creek Glen Campground, Skybrook Campground, and Lake Demmon Recreation Area book directly through their own websites or by phone. Creek-side and lakefront sites go first, so reserve holiday weekends as soon as the nine-month window opens for state parks, and several months out for popular private grounds.
What to expect on-site
Amenities vary widely between public and private grounds. Stony Brook has no electric sites and no cabins with electric, and generator hours are limited to 9AM to 11AM and 5PM to 9PM. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted, and quiet hours run from 10PM to 8AM. Each site has a picnic table and a fire ring, and current proof of rabies inoculation is required at check-in for pets.
Private campgrounds offer more RV-friendly features. Lake Demmon has pull-through sites with 30-amp service, water, laundry, showers, a dump station, cable, and Wi-Fi, and accepts RVs up to 40 feet. Sun Valley provides water and electric hookups and a dedicated WiFi zone across 180 wooded acres. Bring bug spray and layers for cool nights.

parks.ny.gov/parks/stonybrookWhen is the best time to visit Hornell for RV camping?
Late May through mid-October is the sweet spot for RV camping Hornell, with June and September being the absolute favorites among locals. Summer highs run a comfortable 78 to 85°F with cool nights perfect for campfires, while fall brings legendary Finger Lakes foliage that peaks in early-to-mid October. Spring (April to early May) can still see frost and muddy trails, and winter dips into the teens and 20s°F with significant lake-effect snow, so most campgrounds close from late October through April. Insider tip: aim for the second or third week of September. Crowds thin out after Labor Day, wineries near Hammondsport are in full harvest mode, and the maple trees that gave Hornell its Maple City nickname start turning brilliant red and orange.
weather.gov/bgm/First time renting an RV: will I be okay in Hornell?
Yes, and Hornell is a fantastic place for first time renting an RV. The roads are rural, traffic is light, and you are surrounded by beginner-friendly routes like Route 36 and Interstate 86. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup that typically lasts 30 to 60 minutes. They will show you how to operate the slides, hookups, propane, water systems, and dump valves, and many send a follow-up video reference. You can message your host any time during the trip with questions. Pro tip: book a travel trailer that the host delivers and sets up at Stony Brook or Letchworth so you skip towing entirely. Drive in with your car, walk into a fully ready RV, and start enjoying.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if I break down during my Hornell RV trip?
You are covered. Every RVezy booking includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, so if you get a flat on Interstate 86, run into a battery issue at Letchworth, or need a tow back toward Hornell, help is one phone call away. You can also reach RVezy customer support around the clock through the app or by phone, and your host is usually a quick text away for vehicle-specific questions. The Hornell area has reliable cell service along the main corridors (I-86, Route 36, Route 21), with a few weaker pockets in the Allegany hills. Pro tip: download offline Google Maps for your route before you leave town, and save the roadside assistance number to your phone the day you pick up.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Hornell RV rental across state lines or into Canada?
Yes for most US destinations, and often yes for Canada with a quick conversation. Your RV rental Hornell trip can easily cross into Pennsylvania (just 30 miles south), Ohio, or all the way to the coast, with the included protection package valid throughout the United States. For Canadian crossings (Niagara Falls is only about two hours away), message your host before booking. Many will approve cross-border trips and provide the registration paperwork you'll need at the border. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on RVezy rentals because the protection package doesn't extend there. Pro tip: bring your passport or enhanced license, and let your host know your full itinerary so they can prep the right documents and confirm the route works with their mileage policy.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-go/your-tripWhat kind of fuel mileage and budget should I expect around Hornell?
Most motorhomes get 8 to 12 miles per gallon (MPG), while smaller campervans can stretch to 16 to 20 MPG. Travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle, generally landing in the 10 to 14 MPG range. Gas prices in Steuben County typically sit slightly below the New York State average, with stations in Hornell, Bath, and Wayland easy to find. For a typical week of RV camping Hornell with 400 to 500 miles of driving, budget roughly $200 to $400 for fuel. Diesel motorhomes will cost a bit more per gallon but go farther. Pro tip: fuel up just before heading into Letchworth or the Allegany hills, where stations are sparser, and use GasBuddy to track the cheapest pumps along Route 36.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book campgrounds near Hornell?
For New York State Parks like Letchworth and Stony Brook, reservations open exactly nine months out through ReserveAmerica, and prime summer weekends (especially July 4th and Labor Day) book up within hours of release. For private parks like Sun Valley Campsites or Kanakadea Park, three to four months ahead is usually enough for weekends, with weekdays often available even closer in. If you're flexible, midweek stays in June or September are easy to grab. Pro tip: book your RVezy rental first to confirm your dates, then immediately reserve your campsite. If a state park is full, check the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation's free dispersed camping options in Ossian State Forest or Palmers Pond State Forest as a fallback.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are driving conditions like in and around Hornell?
Hornell driving is refreshingly easy for an RV. Interstate 86 (the Southern Tier Expressway) runs east-west right past town with wide lanes and gentle grades, and Route 36 winds north through scenic farmland toward Dansville. Local streets in downtown Hornell are narrow in spots but very manageable in anything up to about 30 feet. The bigger thing to watch is terrain. The Allegany foothills mean some twisty climbs on backroads to spots like Cider Creek Hard Cider in Canisteo, so take it slow with a longer rig. Winter brings lake-effect snow off Lake Ontario from December through March. Pro tip: avoid Route 21 between Wayland and Naples in heavy rain, where wind off the hills can buffet tall RVs. Check 511NY.org for live conditions.
511ny.org/What hookups and amenities do campgrounds near Hornell offer?
Most campgrounds near Hornell offer the essentials you'd want, though hookup levels vary. Letchworth State Park provides electric-only sites with a central dump station and water fill. Stony Brook State Park is similar with electric hookups and shared showers. Sun Valley Campsites in Bath offers full hookups (water, electric, sewer) and is big-rig friendly. Kanakadea Park has water access and restrooms but limited hookups. For dumping and water fills between trips, the Flying J near Bath on I-86 has dedicated RV lanes. Pro tip: pack a 25-foot freshwater hose and a 30-amp to 50-amp adapter just in case. Older state park sites occasionally use 30-amp pedestals, and your host can confirm exactly what you'll need before pickup.
parks.ny.gov/parks/letchworth/camping.aspxWhat's inside a typical motorhome rental Hornell on RVezy?
A typical motorhome rental Hornell comes ready to camp. Expect a queen or king bed, convertible dinette or sofa for extra sleeping, a full kitchen with fridge/freezer, propane stove, microwave, and sink, plus a wet or dry bathroom with toilet and shower. Most Class C motorhomes sleep four to six and include air conditioning, a furnace for chilly Southern Tier nights, a generator or solar setup for boondocking, and seatbelted seating for travel. Many listings also include TVs, Bluetooth speakers, and outdoor camp chairs. Wi-Fi is hit-or-miss in rural Steuben County, so a mobile hotspot is a nice add. Pro tip: check the listing photos and the Amenities section closely. Some hosts include bedding, kitchenware, and cleaning kits at no extra charge, which makes packing for your trip much simpler.
fmcsa.dot.gov/regulations/title49/section/393.93What add-ons and pickup options are available for a campervan rental in Hornell?
A campervan rental in Hornell is highly customizable. Common RVezy add-ons include linen and towel packages ($30 to $75), kitchen kits, generators, propane fills, outdoor chairs and grills, bike racks, and pet cleaning fees. Many hosts offer delivery (often $2 to $4 per mile after a free radius) directly to Letchworth, Stony Brook, or your driveway. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Hornell, with a walkthrough that runs 30 to 60 minutes. Standard mileage allowances are 100 to 150 miles per night, with extras at roughly $0.30 to $0.45 per mile. Pro tip: bundle add-ons at booking rather than asking the day of pickup. Hosts often discount packages when you confirm everything upfront, and it leaves more time for the orientation.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Hornell%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is handled entirely through the secure RVezy platform, so you never hand cash or a check to the host. When you book, you will pay the trip total (rental, fees, protection plan) by credit or debit card. A refundable security deposit, typically $500 to $1,500 depending on the RV, is pre-authorized on your card a few days before pickup, not actually charged unless there is an issue. Most renters get the full hold released within a week of returning the RV. Pro tip: take date-stamped photos and a short walkaround video of the RV at both pickup and drop-off, especially of the exterior, tires, and interior cabinets. It is the fastest way to ensure your deposit hold is released quickly after your Hornell trip wraps up.
