RV camping near Houghton, New York
Houghton sits in Allegany County in western New York's Southern Tier, along State Route 19 in the Genesee River valley. The hamlet is best known as a base for trips to Letchworth State Park, renowned as the Grand Canyon of the East, where the Genesee River roars through the gorge, over three major waterfalls, between cliffs as high as 600 feet in some places. RV travelers typically choose between privately run campgrounds in the surrounding hills and the large state-run campground inside Letchworth itself.
Closest to the village, the Houghton / Letchworth KOA offers full-hookup pull-throughs with 30- and 50-amp service, plus pools, a dog park, and a camp store. Willard's Country Place provides a smaller, quieter rural setting, and Letchworth Valley Campground & Resort, Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Four Winds, and Adventure Bound Four Winds add larger resort-style options with family amenities. The area pairs easily with day trips to the Finger Lakes, Amish country around Fillmore, and Allegany State Park to the south.
Things to do around Houghton
Letchworth State Park anchors the area. Visitors drive the park road between scenic overlooks, hike a network of trails to Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls, and book seasonal hot-air balloon flights and whitewater rafting on the Genesee River. The park offers 66 miles of hiking trails, as well as trails for horseback riding, biking, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing. The conference and nature center offers outdoor, history, and performing arts programs, plus guided walks, tours, and a summer lecture series.
The Genesee River and nearby lakes draw kayakers and canoers, with launches a short drive from most campgrounds. Cyclists ride the rural county roads through Amish farm country toward Fillmore and Caneadea. Anglers fish for trout in the river and stocked ponds, and families add Darien Lake amusement park, about an hour north, as a half-day trip. Allegany State Park to the south offers additional hiking and swimming.

The Letchworth-area camping season generally runs from mid-May through mid-October, with peak demand from late June through late August. Letchworth's peak season runs from late June to late August, when summer weekends sell out months in advance.
Spring brings high water in the gorge and dramatic waterfall flow, but cold nights linger into May and trails can be muddy after snowmelt. Summer is warm and humid, with afternoon thunderstorms common; most private campground pools open from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Fall is the standout season for foliage, typically peaking in the first three weeks of October, with cool nights and crisp days that are ideal for hiking and photography along the rim.
Winter camping is limited. The state park stays open for day use, but most private campgrounds in the region close once water lines are blown out, generally by late October. Lake-effect snow off Lake Erie can be heavy in January and February.
How to book a campsite
Sites inside Letchworth State Park can be reserved up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, online or by phone at 1-800-456-2267. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on day of arrival, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only. Cabins are reservable for any 2 nights outside of peak season, and cabin areas require a 7 or 14-night reservation during peak season, with fixed Saturday-to-Saturday or Sunday-to-Sunday turns depending on the area.
Letchworth's campsite availability is reduced through phased construction, with loops 100 and 200 open for the full season and the remaining loops experiencing phased closures, so check the park page before booking. Private options including Houghton / Letchworth KOA, Willard's Country Place, Letchworth Valley Campground & Resort, Adventure Bound Camping Resorts - Four Winds, and Adventure Bound Four Winds book directly through their own websites or by phone.
What to expect on arrival
Roads in this part of Allegany County are rural and hilly. GPS apps sometimes route RVs onto narrow back roads; campgrounds, including the Houghton / Letchworth KOA, post their own driving directions and ask drivers to follow them rather than the navigation app. Approaches via State Route 19 and I-86 handle large rigs comfortably.
Cell coverage is uneven once inside Letchworth's gorge. Wi-Fi at private campgrounds is typically limited to office or lodge areas. Interior loops at the state park can have tighter turns and lower-clearance trees than the private resorts on flatter ground. New York rules require firewood to be sourced within a 50-mile radius of any state park to protect against invasive pests. Black bears are present in the region, so food and trash should be stored inside the RV overnight.

How much does it cost to rent an RV in Houghton?
An RV rental in Houghton is one of the more affordable ways to explore Western New York's Southern Tier. On RVezy, travel trailers typically start around $100 to $150 per night, campervans run $150 to $225, and larger Class C motorhomes fall between $200 and $325 nightly, depending on age and amenities. Because Houghton is a small village along Route 19, you often find better value here than near Buffalo or the Finger Lakes. For a cheap RV rental in Houghton, book midweek in May or September, filter by towables (which usually pair with delivery), and look for hosts offering unlimited mileage. Pro tip: many local hosts drop seasonal rates after Labor Day, just as the Allegany foliage peaks.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Houghton%2C%20New%20YorkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Houghton?
Good news for first-time renters: a regular driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Houghton. New York State does not require a special RV license or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for any motorhome or trailer you will find on RVezy, including Class A, Class C, and large fifth wheels. Approved drivers on RVezy are generally 25 or older, and ID verification happens through the platform when you book. Visiting from outside the U.S.? Bring your home license plus an International Driving Permit (IDP). That is it, you are cleared to hit Route 19 toward Letchworth State Park.

Whether you are parked at a private site near Caneadea or driving the winding roads above the Genesee River, you are covered. Roadside help is a phone call away for flats, lockouts, jump-starts, or mechanical trouble. You will see your exact cancellation terms clearly laid out during checkout, so there are no surprises. If a Lake Erie snow band or a Genesee River flood warning disrupts your plans, contact RVezy support right away and the team will help you sort out next steps. Absolutely, a pet-friendly RV rental in Houghton, NY is easy to find on RVezy, just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see listings whose hosts welcome dogs and sometimes cats. Western New York is fantastic for four-legged co-pilots: Letchworth State Park (about 25 minutes north) allows leashed dogs on nearly all trails and in most campground loops, and Allegany State Park (about 50 minutes south) has pet-friendly cabins and sites too. Many Houghton-area hosts charge a small pet fee or extra cleaning deposit, which you'll see upfront on the listing. Pro tip: message the host before booking to mention your dog's size and breed, owners appreciate the heads-up and often share local off-leash spots along the Genesee River.
parks.ny.gov/regulations/Can the RV be delivered to my campsite near Houghton?
Yes, RV delivery in Houghton, NY is one of the smartest ways to start your trip, especially if you're new to RVing. Many hosts on RVezy will tow or drive the rig directly to your campsite, whether that's Letchworth State Park, Allegany State Park, or a private property near Houghton College. They'll level it, hook up water and power, and walk you through every system before handing you the keys. Delivery fees typically run $2 to $4 per mile round-trip, and some hosts include a set number of miles free. This is the easiest option for a family RV trip in Houghton if you'd rather skip the driving and dive straight into s'mores by the campfire.
parks.ny.gov/parks/letchworth/How far can I drive on a typical RV rental from Houghton?
You've got real range from Houghton. Most RVezy hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, and many offer RV rentals with unlimited mileage, which is ideal for road trips. Extra miles, when charged, usually run $0.30 to $0.45 each. From Houghton you're well-positioned: Letchworth State Park is about 22 miles north, Niagara Falls about 80 miles northwest, Allegany State Park about 45 miles south, and the Finger Lakes wine country roughly 90 miles east. Even a Pittsburgh, PA detour is just 130 miles. Pro tip: if you're planning a longer Western New York loop, filter for unlimited-mileage listings first, it removes any worry about racking up extra fees while exploring.
dot.ny.gov/Where are the best campgrounds near Houghton, NY?
You're spoiled for choice. The best campgrounds near Houghton, NY include Letchworth State Park (the "Grand Canyon of the East," about 25 minutes north, with 270+ sites and waterfalls), Allegany State Park (New York's largest, with the Red House and Quaker areas roughly 50 minutes south), Houghton Letchworth KOA Holiday in nearby Caneadea (full hookups, pool, and pull-thrus right on Route 19), Hidden Valley Campground in Whitesville for a quiet creek-side feel, and Triple R Camping Resort in Franklinville (about 35 minutes west). All accept RVs and most have dump stations and 30/50-amp service. Pro tip: book Letchworth six to nine months ahead for summer weekends, fall foliage sites disappear by July.
parks.ny.gov/parks/letchworth/maps.aspxWhen is the best time for an RV trip in Houghton?
Late May through mid-October is prime time for RV camping in Houghton, with the absolute sweet spot being September into early October when daytime highs sit in the 60s to low 70s°F, nights cool to the 40s, and Letchworth's gorge explodes into red and gold. July is the warmest month, averaging around 78°F highs, ideal for swimming at Allegany's Quaker Lake. June can be rainy (the wettest month locally), and winters are genuinely cold, with January lows dipping to 15°F and heavy lake-effect snow from Lake Erie. Pro tip: book the last two weekends of September for peak foliage, those dates fill up faster than summer holidays in this part of New York.
weather.gov/buf/Should I rent an RV in winter near Houghton?
Winter RVing here is a real adventure if you come prepared. Houghton sits in the lake-effect snow belt downwind of Lake Erie, so December through March brings heavy snowfall and temperatures often in the teens. Some RVezy hosts keep four-season rigs available with heated holding tanks, enclosed underbellies, and propane furnaces, perfect for snowmobiling the Allegany Snowmobile Trail or ice fishing at Rushford Lake. If you book a winter trip, look for listings that mention shore power, skirting, and heated tanks, and plan to stay at campgrounds with full winter hookups, since most state park sites close after Columbus Day. Pro tip: message hosts before booking to confirm winter readiness and ask about tire chains, you'll thank yourself on Route 19.
weather.gov/buf/lake_effectI have never rented an RV before. Will I be okay?
You will be more than okay. First time renting an RV is genuinely easier than people expect, especially in a low-traffic area like Houghton. Every RVezy host gives you a hands-on walkthrough at pickup covering how to extend slides, dump tanks, run the generator, hook up at a campground, and operate the propane stove. You can message the host anytime through the app, and RVezy support is available before and during your trip. Houghton's quiet country roads and the gentle stretch of NY-19 are forgiving practice ground. Pro tip: pick a smaller Class C or a campervan rental in Houghton for your first trip, they drive much like a large van and park easily at Letchworth's sites.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsWhat happens if the RV breaks down during my trip?
You are never on your own. Every RV rental in Houghton booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the protection plan, no matter where you are in Allegany County or beyond. Flat tire on Route 19, dead battery at Letchworth, or a mechanical issue near Rushford Lake? One call dispatches help, including towing, jump-starts, lockout service, and fuel delivery. Your host is also just a message away and can troubleshoot quirks of their specific rig. Cell service is generally solid along NY-19 and I-86, though it can dip in the deeper Allegany backcountry. Pro tip: save the RVezy support number and your host's number in your phone before leaving the driveway.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat road trips can I take from Houghton, NY?
Houghton is a fantastic launch pad for an RV road trip. Popular routes include: Letchworth State Park loop (22 miles north, an easy overnight), Niagara Falls (about 80 miles northwest, 1.5 hours), Allegany State Park and the Pennsylvania Wilds (45 to 100 miles south), the Finger Lakes wine trail around Keuka and Seneca lakes (90 to 110 miles east), and Erie, PA on Lake Erie's shore (about 100 miles west). Cross-border into Canada via the Peace Bridge in Buffalo is allowed by many hosts with proper notice, but travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: message your host at least a week ahead if your RV road trip from Houghton crosses into Ontario, they'll prep the paperwork you need.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-go/your-tripHow much should I budget for fuel?
Fuel is the biggest variable cost on any Houghton RV trip, but it's manageable with a little planning. Expect Class C motorhomes to average 8 to 10 miles per gallon (MPG), Class A around 7 to 9, campervans 16 to 20, and a truck pulling a travel trailer 10 to 13. Gas in Allegany County typically runs slightly below the New York state average, with stations in Fillmore, Belfast, and Cuba on Route 19 and I-86 being convenient and affordable. For a typical 300-mile weekend loop to Letchworth and back, budget $90 to $140 in fuel for a mid-size motorhome. Pro tip: top up in Cuba or Olean before heading deeper into the parks, prices climb closer to tourist areas.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Houghton?
For the best sites, book early, New York State Parks open reservations nine months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and Letchworth's gorge-view sites for summer and fall weekends are snapped up almost immediately. For a stress-free RV camping experience near Houghton, lock in Letchworth and Allegany State Park six to nine months ahead for June through October. Private parks like Houghton Letchworth KOA and Triple R Camping Resort book through their own websites and usually open up two to four months out. Mid-week stays and shoulder-season trips (May, September, early October) are far easier to grab last minute. Pro tip: set a calendar reminder for exactly nine months before your target date at 7 a.m. Eastern, that's when ReserveAmerica opens the window.
parks.ny.gov/camping/What's driving like around Houghton?
Driving is refreshingly easy in this corner of New York. Houghton sits along NY-19, a two-lane state route with gentle grades, light traffic, and clear sightlines, perfect for a motorhome rental in Houghton even if you're new to bigger rigs. The main considerations are: lake-effect snow squalls from November through March (drive slowly or avoid travel during advisories), some steep descents into Letchworth's gorge area, and occasional Amish horse-and-buggy traffic on rural roads near Fillmore and Centerville, so stay alert. I-86 (the Southern Tier Expressway) is the fastest east-west route and is RV-friendly. Pro tip: check 511NY before any winter trip, the state's free travel info service shows real-time road conditions and closures across Allegany County.
511ny.org/What amenities will I find at campgrounds near Houghton?
Local campgrounds are well-equipped for RVs. Letchworth State Park offers electric hookups (20/30/50-amp) at most sites, hot showers, flush toilets, a dump station, and potable water fills, though no individual sewer hookups. Allegany State Park's Red House and Quaker areas have similar amenities plus a few full-hookup loops. Private parks like Houghton Letchworth KOA and Triple R Camping Resort offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, pools, and laundry. Dump stations are also available at Walmart-adjacent travel plazas along I-86 in Olean. Water fills are easy at any state park check-in or KOA. Pro tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose and a 30-amp to 50-amp adapter, they cover almost every hookup scenario you'll meet in Western New York.
parks.ny.gov/parks/79/details.aspxWhat is actually inside the RVs I can rent in Houghton?
You will find more comfort than you might expect. Most RV rentals in Houghton come fully equipped with a queen or king bed, a dinette and sofa that convert to extra sleeping space (rigs typically sleep 4 to 8), a kitchen with stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, and sink, and a bathroom with toilet and shower. Air conditioning, propane furnace, and a generator or shore-power setup are standard. Many hosts include linens, cookware, outdoor chairs, a propane grill, and sometimes bikes. Larger Class A and Class C motorhomes often have a TV, and some include Wi-Fi hotspots, which is helpful since cell signal can dip near Letchworth's gorge. Pro tip: check each listing's amenities list and message the host if you need a specific item like a coffee maker or pack-n-play.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Houghton%2C%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and pickup options should I know about?
Hosts in the Houghton area offer practical add-ons that make trips smoother: bedding and linen packs, kitchen kits, outdoor furniture, generator use (often a small per-hour fee over a daily allowance), propane refills, and bike or kayak rentals. Pickup is usually at the host's home, often within 15 to 30 minutes of Houghton in towns like Fillmore, Belfast, Caneadea, or Cuba, and dropoff is typically the reverse. Many hosts include 100 to 150 free miles per night, with extra miles at $0.30 to $0.45 each, and a growing number offer RV rentals with unlimited mileage. Pro tip: ask about a delivery package to Letchworth, you skip the driving entirely and meet your RV already set up at your site.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Houghton%2C%20New%20YorkHow do payment and the security deposit work?
Payment is simple and secure. When you book an RV rental in Houghton through RVezy, you pay by credit or debit card directly through the platform, never in cash to the host. You typically pay a portion at booking and the balance before your trip starts, with the exact schedule shown at checkout. A refundable security deposit is held separately from your booking payment and released after the trip once the host confirms the rig was returned in good shape. Pro tip: do a quick walk-around video at both pickup and dropoff with your host, it is the easiest way to ensure your deposit is released quickly.
