Camping near Irvington, New York
Irvington sits on the east bank of the Hudson in Westchester County, roughly 25 miles north of Midtown Manhattan. RV travelers use it as a base for the Lower Hudson Valley: Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown are minutes away, and the Palisades Interstate Parkway, Taconic State Parkway, and I-87 all put major park systems within an hour's drive.
There is no campground inside Irvington itself. Visitors typically stay at one of a handful of options: state park campgrounds in the Hudson Highlands to the north and west, a full-hookup urban RV park across the river in Jersey City, or a National Park Service site in Brooklyn. Each pairs differently with a New York City itinerary versus a hiking-and-lakes trip.
Harriman State Park is a haven for hikers with more than 200 miles of trails, 31 lakes, and two beaches, and is New York's second-biggest state park. Clarence Fahnestock State Park covers roughly 14,000 acres in Putnam and Dutchess counties, about an hour north of the city. Together they anchor most trips in this area.
Things to do near Irvington
Trail access is the main draw. Harriman connects to Bear Mountain and to sections of the Appalachian Trail, and Clarence Fahnestock has extensive hiking as well. Canopus Lake at Fahnestock has a sandy shore, and rowboats and kayaks are available for rent.
From Beaver Pond Campground, Lake Welch swimming beach is within walking distance, with immediate access to Harriman's trail network including portions of the Appalachian Trail. Local Irvington-area stops include the Old Croton Aqueduct trail, Lyndhurst mansion, and Rockefeller State Park Preserve.
From Liberty Harbor RV Park, the Grove Street PATH station is a short walk with Manhattan a quick ride away, and ferry service to Lower Manhattan runs on weekdays. Floyd Bennett Field has hiking trails, historic airplane hangars, a recreation complex with bike rentals, and an outdoor archery range accessible with a camping reservation.

The camping calendar in this region is short. Beaver Pond Campground in Harriman typically opens in mid-April for walk-in camping only, with the regular reservation season running from early May through mid-October. Pelton Pond at Clarence Fahnestock has historically operated from mid-May through early November, but the campground is currently closed to facilitate construction of a new bathhouse, so confirm status on ReserveAmerica before booking. Camp Gateway at Floyd Bennett Field operates on a seasonal schedule, roughly spring through fall, and has not always run every year.
Summer weekends are the pressure point. Harriman is about an hour from New York City and a favored weekend getaway, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Fall brings peak foliage through October and much lighter crowds mid-week.
Winter shifts activity to Fahnestock, which is home to Fahnestock Winter Park with groomed trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, plus a sledding area. Liberty Harbor RV Park is the only nearby full-hookup option that stays open year-round.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

Booking campsites near Irvington
New York State Parks use ReserveAmerica. Camping reservations can be made up to nine months in advance, with sites opening at the nine-month window at 8 AM weekdays and 9 AM weekends between March 15 and Labor Day, and at 9 AM daily the rest of the year. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 PM on the day of arrival, and walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
Floyd Bennett Field books through Recreation.gov, with advance reservations required at least a day ahead and a 14-night maximum stay. Liberty Harbor RV Park books directly through the property. Camp Wyanokie handles reservations through Campspot; it is tent-only and does not accept RVs, trailers, motorhomes, or pop-up campers.
What to expect at area campgrounds
Hookup expectations vary sharply. Beaver Pond has full-service bathrooms with showers, laundry, and a dump station for RVs, but no electrical hookups, and select sites accommodate trailers or RVs up to 30 feet. Pelton Pond at Fahnestock is similarly rustic. Liberty Harbor RV Park is an urban lot-style park with hookups, showers, and laundry, offering skyline views rather than a wooded setting. Camp Wyanokie is rustic tent-only with no running water, electricity, or RV access.
Rules are strict at the state parks. Pets and alcohol are not permitted at Beaver Pond, and only one vehicle is allowed per campsite.
Black bears are present in the Highlands, so food should be stored in a hard-sided vehicle or bear canister. Ticks are active spring through fall, so long pants and repellent are worth packing.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Irvington, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Irvington, NY?
RV rental in Irvington, NY is more affordable than most travelers expect, especially compared to NYC hotel rates. On RVezy, you'll generally find travel trailers starting around $95 to $150 per night, Class C motorhomes from $175 to $275, and larger Class A rigs from $250 to $400 nightly. Because hosts set their own pricing, you can filter by price range and even sort by cheap RV rental Irvington options. To save more, book mid-week trips, travel in May or late September when the Hudson Valley is gorgeous but demand drops, and look for hosts offering weekly discounts. Pro tip: a travel trailer paired with a campground site at Croton Point Park often costs less than a two-night stay in Westchester hotels.
westchestergov.com/parks/parks-a-locations/croton-point-parkWhat license do I need to rent an RV in Irvington, NY?
Good news: a standard driver's license is all you need to rent an RV in Irvington for any rig on RVezy. New York's regular Class D license covers recreational vehicles with a GVWR up to 26,000 pounds, which includes virtually every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer on the platform. No commercial driver's license or special R endorsement is required for personal-use rentals in this size range. You'll need to be 25 or older, and RVezy verifies your ID through the platform during booking. Visiting from abroad? Bring your home country license plus an International Driving Permit (typically under $20 from your local auto club) and you're set for your Hudson Valley adventure.
dmv.ny.gov/driver-license/new-york-state-learner-permit-and-driver-license-class-descriptionsIs RVezy's protection package included when I rent an RV in Irvington?
Yes, every booking on RVezy automatically includes a renter protection plan and 24/7 roadside assistance, so you're covered from the moment you pick up the keys. The protection plan covers most damage to the RV during your trip, giving you peace of mind whether you're driving through Tarrytown or parked at a Catskills campground. RVezy offers multiple coverage tiers (Standard, Special, and Premium) so you can choose the level that fits your trip during checkout, the renter selects the tier, not the host. First time renting an RV in the Hudson Valley? Knowing roadside help is one call away, even at 2 a.m. on the Taconic, makes the experience feel a lot less intimidating.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat's the cancellation policy if my Irvington RV trip plans change?
Booking is low risk because RVezy sets the cancellation policy centrally, not individual hosts, so the same rules apply to every Irvington RV rental. Refund eligibility depends on how far in advance of your trip you cancel, and special circumstances like severe weather or natural disasters may qualify for additional flexibility. If a host cancels on you, RVezy refunds your booking or offers travel credits so your trip plans aren't left in limbo. Full details are available in the RVezy Help Center. Pro tip: book early to lock in your preferred rig for fall foliage season, knowing flexibility is built in if life shifts.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360037736674-Understanding-the-cancellation-policy-for-guestsCan I bring my dog on a pet-friendly RV rental in Irvington?
Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Irvington options are easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter when searching, and you'll see listings from local hosts who welcome four-legged guests (some may charge a small pet cleaning fee, which is disclosed upfront). Once you're rolling, Westchester is a dog lover's dream: the Old Croton Aqueduct Trail runs right through Irvington and is leash-friendly for miles, and Rockefeller State Park Preserve in nearby Pleasantville has 55+ miles of carriage roads perfect for hiking with pups. Croton Point Park also allows leashed dogs in its campground. Bring a tie-out and a water bowl, and your dog will love a Hudson Valley RV trip as much as you do.
parks.ny.gov/parks/rockefellerCan the RV be delivered to me in Irvington?
Yes, RV delivery in Irvington is one of the easiest ways to start a trip, especially if you're nervous about driving a big rig through Westchester's winding roads. Many RVezy hosts in the lower Hudson Valley offer delivery directly to your driveway, a local campground like Croton Point Park, or a convenient meeting spot. The host will set up the RV, level it, connect hookups where available, and walk you through every system before leaving. Delivery fees are typically based on mileage from the host's location and are shown on the listing. To find delivery-ready rigs, use the Delivery filter on RVezy. It's a fantastic option for first timers who want to skip city driving entirely.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Irvington%2C%20New%20YorkHow does mileage work, and how far can I drive on an Irvington RV trip?
Each host sets their own mileage policy, and you'll see it clearly displayed on every listing before you book, so there are no surprises. Many Irvington-area hosts offer 100 to 150 included miles per night with reasonable per-mile fees beyond that, and some offer RV rental with unlimited mileage packages perfect for longer Hudson Valley loops. From Irvington you can reach the Catskills in about 90 miles, Lake George in roughly 200 miles, the Adirondacks in around 230 miles, or Cape Cod in about 250 miles, all very doable. Pro tip: estimate your total round-trip mileage before booking and message the host to ask about add-on mileage bundles, which are usually cheaper than paying per-mile overage fees.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Irvington%2C%20New%20YorkWhere can I camp with an RV near Irvington, NY?
You're spoiled for choice when it comes to RV camping near Irvington and the surrounding Hudson Valley. Croton Point Park (about 15 miles north in Croton-on-Hudson) is a Westchester County favorite with riverfront sites, 30-amp electric, and water hookups. Clarence Fahnestock State Park in Carmel (about 35 miles north) offers electric sites from spring through early December. Harriman State Park's Beaver Pond Campground sits about 30 miles west across the Hudson with wooded sites. For a quick urban-adjacent option, Liberty Harbor RV Park in Jersey City is roughly 25 miles south. Book Westchester County and state park sites early, spring and fall weekends fill fast thanks to the area's famous foliage and Hudson River views.
parks.ny.gov/camping/When is the best time to rent an RV in Irvington?
Late April through late October is prime RV season in the Hudson Valley, with each stretch offering something different. May and June bring lush greenery and temperatures in the 60s to mid-70s°F, perfect for hiking the Old Croton Aqueduct. July and August are warm (80s°F, sometimes humid) and ideal for swimming at nearby lakes. The real magic, though, is late September through mid-October when Hudson Valley fall foliage explodes in red and gold and daytime temps sit in the comfortable 50s to 60s°F. Winter rentals are possible too if you choose a four-season RV, but campground options shrink. Insider tip: book your Irvington RV trip for the first two weeks of October and you'll catch peak foliage along the Taconic State Parkway, one of America's most scenic drives.
weather.gov/okx/I've never rented an RV before. Will I be okay driving in the Irvington area?
First time renting an RV? You're in great hands. Every RVezy host provides a hands-on orientation at pickup, walking you through driving, leveling, slide-outs, plumbing, and electrical systems before you leave with the keys. You can also message your host with questions before booking. For driving confidence around Irvington, stick with a Class B campervan or smaller Class C (under 25 feet) for your first trip, which handles Westchester's winding parkways and tree-lined village streets easily. Skip the Saw Mill River Parkway and Hutchinson River Parkway (passenger cars only, low clearance bridges) and use I-87 or I-684 instead. Within 24 hours you'll feel like a pro, and your host plus RVezy support are just a text away.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/repository/HCRPP.htmlWhat happens if I have a breakdown or roadside issue during my trip?
You're never stranded. Every RV rental in Irvington, NY booked through RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the renter protection plan, covering things like flat tires, dead batteries, lockouts, and towing. If something goes wrong you have one number to call, day or night, and a dispatcher will coordinate help to your location, whether you're on I-287, parked at a Catskills overlook, or stuck at a campground. Your host is also typically just a message away for quick troubleshooting questions about their specific RV. Pro tip: record a short video of the orientation walkthrough at pickup so you can reference it later if a switch or system isn't behaving the way you remember.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailCan I take my Irvington rental on a road trip to other states or Canada?
Yes, an RV road trip from Irvington opens up an incredible chunk of the Northeast. Crossing state lines into Connecticut, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Vermont, and Pennsylvania is generally fine, just confirm with your host since some prefer to keep trips regional. Cross-border travel to Canada (think Montreal at about 370 miles or Quebec City at 530 miles) may be allowed depending on the host and insurance, so message them before booking to confirm. Travel to Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Popular routes include the Berkshires (about 90 miles), the Finger Lakes (260 miles), Acadia National Park in Maine (450 miles), and Niagara Falls (390 miles). Lock in your route early so your host can quote accurate mileage.
cbp.gov/travel/us-citizens/know-before-you-goHow much should I budget for fuel on a Hudson Valley RV trip?
Fuel is usually the biggest variable cost, so it's smart to plan ahead. Most Class C motorhomes around Irvington average 8 to 12 miles per gallon, Class B campervans get 16 to 20 MPG, and travel trailers depend on your tow vehicle (typically 10 to 14 MPG combined). New York gas prices tend to run higher than the national average, recently around $3.40 to $3.90 per gallon for regular and a bit more for diesel. For a 4-day, 400-mile loop in a Class C, expect roughly $130 to $200 in fuel. Pro tip: fill up in New Jersey or Pennsylvania (often $0.30 to $0.50 cheaper per gallon) when your route allows, and use apps like GasBuddy to find the best prices along the Thruway.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Irvington?
Book early for the best campgrounds near Irvington, especially during peak season. New York State Parks (like Clarence Fahnestock and Harriman) use ReserveAmerica and open bookings up to 9 months in advance, with summer weekends and foliage-season October dates filling within hours of release. Westchester County Parks (including Croton Point) use the county's online reservation system and tend to fill 2 to 3 months ahead for weekends. Private parks like Black Bear RV Park in Florida, NY are a bit more flexible but still book up. Insider tip: midweek arrivals (Sunday through Thursday) are dramatically easier to score, often at lower rates, and you'll have the trails practically to yourself.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/What are local driving conditions like around Irvington?
Irvington sits in a beautiful but tricky-to-navigate corner of Westchester, so a little planning helps. The good news: with a Class B or smaller Class C, you'll handle it easily. Key thing to know: the Saw Mill, Hutchinson, Bronx River, Taconic, and Sprain Brook Parkways prohibit RVs and have low stone-arch bridges (some as low as 7 feet), so always route via I-87 (NY Thruway), I-287, I-684, or US-9. Traffic into NYC slows significantly between 6 to 10 a.m. and 3 to 7 p.m. on weekdays, so plan departures around it. Winters can bring snow and icy patches from December through March. Pro tip: use Google Maps' 'avoid highways' off and set vehicle type to RV-friendly apps like RV Life or CoPilot.
dot.ny.gov/regional-offices/region8What amenities should I expect at campgrounds near Irvington?
Most campgrounds near Irvington offer a solid mix of amenities to make your stay easy. At Croton Point Park, you'll find 30-amp electric and water hookups, hot showers, a dump station, and Hudson River views. Clarence Fahnestock has full hookup sites (water, electric, sewer) with 30 and 50-amp service, hiking trails, and a swim lake. Harriman State Park sites tend to be more rustic (electric at some sites, water spigots nearby). For dumping and filling water mid-trip, Croton Point and most state parks offer dump stations to overnight guests, and several truck stops along I-87 can serve in a pinch. Insider tip: bring a 25-foot drinking-water hose, a 30-amp to 50-amp adapter, and a sewer hose support; you'll thank yourself.
parks.ny.gov/parks/133/details.aspxWhat's actually inside the RV I'm renting in Irvington?
Even the most modest motorhome rental Irvington listings come surprisingly well-equipped. Expect a queen or full bed (often with bunks or a convertible dinette for extra sleepers), a working kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and sink, a bathroom with toilet and shower, a roof AC, furnace, and a freshwater tank. Most rigs include a TV, and many have onboard generators, Bluetooth stereos, and outdoor speakers. Wifi isn't typically built in (cell hotspots work well throughout the Hudson Valley) but ask your host if it's important. Every motorized RV has proper seatbelts for travel, and hosts list the exact sleep count on every listing. Pro tip: check the listing photos carefully and message the host to confirm anything specific to your family RV trip Irvington plans.
consumer.ftc.gov/What add-ons and options can I get with my Irvington RV rental?
Hosts offer plenty of helpful add-ons to make your trip turnkey. Common extras include kitchen kits (pots, plates, utensils), bedding and linen packages, camping chairs and outdoor rugs, bike racks, generators, propane refills, and even pre-stocked firewood. Many Irvington-area hosts also offer delivery and setup as add-ons, often for a flat fee within a 30 to 50-mile radius. Mileage bundles and generator-hour packages are popular too, and they're typically cheaper than overage fees. Pickup is usually at the host's home, with some flexibility on times when you message ahead. Pro tip: when you rent an RV in Irvington for a festival or wedding weekend, ask the host about generator hours upfront so you're set for off-grid power.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Irvington%2C%20New%20YorkHow does payment and the security deposit work on RVezy?
Payment is straightforward and handled entirely through RVezy, so you never exchange cash or send money outside the platform, which keeps you protected. You pay your booking total by credit or debit card when you book, and the host receives funds after your trip starts. A refundable security deposit is also pre-authorized on your card before pickup, the amount is shown on the listing and varies by RV value (commonly $500 to $1,500 for Irvington rentals). As long as you return the RV in the condition you received it, with the agreed fuel and tank levels, the hold is released after the trip. Pro tip: take a quick walk-around video at pickup and drop-off, it protects everyone and makes deposit returns smooth.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360038106214-How-the-security-deposit-worksWhere can I park or stay overnight in an RV around the Irvington area?
When figuring out where to park an RV in Irvington, the simplest answer is to head to a real campground rather than street parking. Irvington village streets have parking restrictions and aren't RV-friendly overnight, and most of Westchester restricts oversized vehicle parking. Instead, drive 15 to 35 minutes to Croton Point Park, Clarence Fahnestock State Park, or across the Hudson to Harriman State Park for legal, scenic overnight stays. Some Cabela's, Bass Pro Shops, and select Walmarts in the broader Hudson Valley allow free overnight RV parking, always call ahead to confirm. Pro tip: choose a campervan rental in Irvington if flexibility matters to you, it fits in standard parking spots far more easily than a large motorhome.
