Camping near Jefferson Valley, New York
Jefferson Valley sits in northern Westchester County, about an hour north of New York City and within easy reach of the Hudson Highlands. RV renters use it as a base for state parks and private resorts spread across Putnam, Rockland, Dutchess, and Ulster counties. Most nearby camping falls into two categories: rustic state-park campgrounds run through the New York State Parks reservation system, and full-hookup private parks aimed at families.
Clarence Fahnestock Memorial State Park covers 15,000 acres across Putnam and Dutchess counties and is the closest state-park campground, with sites at Pelton Pond. To the west, Beaver Pond Campground sits within Harriman State Park, about 25 miles north of the George Washington Bridge, and offers tent, trailer, and platform sites near Lake Welch.
Private options add pools, hookups, and kid-focused amenities. New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday and Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River draw families looking for structured activities, while Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc caters to lakefront campers in Dutchess County.
Things to do near Jefferson Valley
Hiking dominates the area. Fahnestock alone has more than 50 miles of trails, and a portion of the Appalachian Trail runs through Fahnestock and Hudson Highlands State Parks. Harriman adds hundreds of miles of trails and dozens of lakes and ponds, along with swimming, fishing, paddling, and boating.
Water activities are a summer draw. Canopus Lake has a sandy shore, fishing for bass, pickerel, perch, and brook and rainbow trout, and rowboats and kayaks available for rental. Campers at Beaver Pond get access to Lake Welch Beach when lifeguards are on duty.
Families with younger kids often head to Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River for its water zone, pools, and activity schedule, or use New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday as a base for Hudson Valley day trips.

State-park campgrounds in the region operate on a warm-weather season, typically running from mid-spring through mid-fall. Fahnestock's campground is closed for the 2026 season to facilitate construction of a new bathhouse, so RV renters should confirm status on the New York State Parks and ReserveAmerica pages before booking. Beaver Pond at Harriman operates on a spring through fall schedule.
Summer weekends fill fastest. Harriman is a popular weekend getaway for New Yorkers, so weekend bookings should be made as far in advance as possible. Reviews consistently note that holiday weekends bring large groups, generators, and noise, and midweek stays are quieter.
Spring and fall offer cooler temperatures and lighter crowds, with fall foliage peaking through the Hudson Highlands in October. Winter shuts down most tent and RV camping, though Fahnestock Winter Park continues to operate groomed cross-country ski and snowshoe trails.

Here’s the updated version with the host included: RV Trip Review We just got back from our trip and had a great experience with this RV. The vehicle was clean, comfortable, and ran really well throughout the entire trip. It had plenty of space for the family and made traveling together easy and enjoyable. Everything worked as expected, and we felt comfortable and confident on the road. The host was also incredibly supportive, friendly, and easy to communicate with. They made the whole rental experience smooth and stress-free. It was a great RV for a family trip(5 people), and we would definitely rent from this host again!

How to book a campsite
New York state park campgrounds are booked through ReserveAmerica. Camping reservations can be made up to 9 months in advance. Same-day reservations are allowed until 3 p.m. on the day of arrival for campsites, either online or through the ReserveAmerica Call Center at 1-800-456-2267. Walk-ins are permitted on campsites only.
Private parks use their own systems. Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River and New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday both take reservations directly on their websites, with earlier booking recommended for peak-summer weekends and themed event weekends. Sylvan Lake Beach Park Inc also books directly.
RV renters should confirm site length limits before booking. Beaver Pond can accommodate a trailer or RV up to 30 ft long, and there are no electrical hookups for trailers at this campground.
What to expect on-site
State-park sites are rustic. At Fahnestock, there are no hookups available or dump station, and restroom and shower facilities are centrally located to all RV and tent sites. Beaver Pond has comfort stations, showers, laundry, and a dumping station, but no electric hookups.
Rules are strictly enforced. Pets are not permitted in Beaver Pond Campground or Lake Welch, and alcohol is prohibited there as well, with random searches possible on arrival. Campsite occupancy at Beaver Pond is limited to six persons, and only one vehicle is permitted per site.
Bears are active in the Hudson Highlands, so food and trash must be stored securely. Private resorts such as Yogi Bear's Jellystone Park Camp-Resort: Lazy River and New York City North / Newburgh KOA Holiday offer full hookups and family amenities on select sites.

Frequently asked questions about campgrounds near Jefferson Valley, NY
How much does it cost to rent an RV in Jefferson Valley?
RV rental in Jefferson Valley is more affordable than most people expect for a Westchester County getaway. On RVezy, towable travel trailers in the Jefferson Valley area average around $125 per night, while motorhomes typically run about $200 to $250 per night, and many hosts offer weekly discounts. You can stretch your budget further by traveling mid-week, booking outside peak summer weekends, and filtering for hosts who include generous mileage. Pro tip: if you want a cheap RV rental in Jefferson Valley, search for travel trailers with delivery included so you skip the cost of a tow vehicle entirely and still wake up at a Hudson Highlands campground.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Jefferson%20Valley%2C%20New%20YorkWhat kind of driver's license do I need to rent an RV in Jefferson Valley, NY?
Good news: for the vast majority of RV rentals in New York, your regular Class D driver's license is all you need. New York only requires an R endorsement for personal-use motorhomes with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) over 26,000 pounds, which is heavier than nearly every Class B campervan, Class C motorhome, and travel trailer listed on RVezy in the Jefferson Valley area. You must generally be 25 or older to book, and RVezy verifies your ID right inside the platform, so there is no extra paperwork at pickup. Visiting from abroad? Bring an International Driving Permit alongside your home license and you are set to rent an RV in Jefferson Valley.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039008774-Understanding-approved-driver-requirementsIs my Jefferson Valley RV rental protected if something goes wrong?
Yes, every booking on RVezy includes a renter protection plan plus 24/7 roadside assistance, so you are covered before you even pull out of the driveway. The protection plan covers most physical damage to the vehicle during your trip, and during checkout you choose the level of coverage that fits your comfort zone, not the host. It provides meaningful financial peace of mind for first-time renters exploring the Hudson Valley. Pro tip: choose a higher-tier plan if you are planning a longer motorhome rental Jefferson Valley road trip with kids, pets, or winding drives toward the Catskills, where unexpected weather and wildlife are part of the adventure.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/34008759079835-RVezy-renter-protection-plans-in-detailWhat happens if I need to cancel my Jefferson Valley RV trip?
Booking is lower-risk than most renters realize. RVezy, not the individual host, sets the cancellation policy, and there is a money-back grace period after booking so you can lock in your dates with confidence. Refund eligibility after that depends on how far out from your trip you cancel. You will see the full cancellation policy details on RVezy's website before you confirm. Pro tip: book early for popular summer weekends near Bear Mountain and Fahnestock, because availability tightens fast once school lets out.

Absolutely, pet-friendly RV rental Jefferson Valley options are easy to find on RVezy. Just toggle the Pet-Friendly filter and you'll see hosts in Yorktown, Mohegan Lake, and the surrounding Westchester area who welcome dogs and sometimes cats. Many nearby campgrounds, including Clarence Fahnestock State Park, allow up to two pets per site on a 6-foot leash, though pets aren't allowed on guarded swimming beaches like Canopus Lake Beach. The FDR State Park trails just down the road in Yorktown Heights are a local favorite for off-rig walks. Pro tip: message the host first to confirm any pet fee and to ask about nearby dog-friendly hikes.
parks.ny.gov/parks/fahnestock/details.aspxCan the RV be delivered to my campsite near Jefferson Valley?
Yes, RV delivery in Jefferson Valley is one of the most popular options on the platform, especially for first-time renters. Many hosts will drive the RV to a campground like Clarence Fahnestock State Park (about 20 miles north), Newburgh / New York City North KOA Holiday (about 35 miles), or even your own driveway in Yorktown, then level it, hook it up, and walk you through every system. Delivery fees are set by each host and depend on distance and RV size. Pro tip: filter by Delivery on RVezy, then ask your host about a stocked setup, many include camp chairs, linens, and a starter propane tank so you can arrive and just relax.

From Jefferson Valley you are about 50 miles north of New York City, 90 miles south of the Catskills, 175 miles to the Adirondacks, and roughly 380 miles to Niagara Falls. RVezy hosts set their own mileage policies, and you will find listings offering generous daily mileage and even RV rental with unlimited mileage if you are planning a long Hudson Valley loop. Pro tip: ask your host about the included miles up front, then map your route so popular detours like Cold Spring or Beacon do not catch you off guard.

Pro tip: state park reservations open 9 months ahead, so book Fahnestock the moment your dates are set.
parks.ny.gov/parks/fahnestock/details.aspxWhen is the best time of year for an RV trip from Jefferson Valley?
Jefferson Valley shines from late April through late October, with three distinct sweet spots. May and June bring blooming Hudson Highlands trails and high temperatures in the 60s and 70s, July and August deliver classic warm-weather camping in the low 80s (occasionally low 90s) with lake swimming at Canopus, and late September through mid-October is peak fall foliage along the Taconic and Hudson River, with crisp 50 to 70 degree days. Winter RVing is possible at year-round parks if your rental has heated tanks, and Fahnestock Winter Park even grooms cross-country ski trails. Pro tip: book the last two weeks of September for fewer crowds and unbeatable color.
weather.gov/okx/I have never rented an RV before. Will I actually know what I am doing?
Yes, and you are in great company, most first time renting an RV happens on a peer-to-peer marketplace exactly like RVezy. Every host gives you an in-person orientation at pickup or delivery, walking you through how to run the generator, fill the water tank, dump waste, level the rig, and use the awning. You can message your host with questions before booking, during the trip, and after. RVezy's customer support team and 24/7 roadside assistance are just a call away if anything feels off. Pro tip: ask your host for a short video walkthrough after pickup so you have a personal reference when you arrive at Fahnestock or Bear Mountain.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionWhat if my RV breaks down during my Hudson Valley trip?
You are never on your own. Every Jefferson Valley RV rental on RVezy includes 24/7 roadside assistance as part of the standard protection plan, so a flat tire on a Hudson Valley back road, a dead battery at a Fahnestock campsite, or a tow off the Bear Mountain Bridge approach is just one phone call away. Your host is also a direct resource for quirks specific to their rig, and RVezy support can help coordinate repairs or alternate plans. Pro tip: save the roadside assistance number in your phone before you leave the driveway, and snap a photo of the RV's VIN and license plate so you can share it quickly if you ever need help.
rvezy.com/insurance-and-protectionCan I take my Jefferson Valley RV rental into Canada or other states?
Yes to interstate travel, and often yes to Canada with a heads-up. An RV road trip from Jefferson Valley easily reaches Vermont (about 3 hours to Manchester), New Hampshire's White Mountains (about 5 hours), Acadia National Park in Maine (about 8 hours), and Niagara Falls (about 6 hours). Cross-border trips into Canada are allowed by many hosts but require their advance approval so insurance documentation can be arranged. Travel into Mexico is not permitted on any RVezy rental. Pro tip: message your host before booking if Montreal or Quebec City is on your wishlist, they can usually accommodate Canadian travel with a little notice.
help.rvezy.com/hc/en-us/articles/360039340074-Insurance-coverage-validityHow much will fuel cost on a Jefferson Valley RV trip?
Budgeting fuel is easier than you'd think once you know the numbers. Class B campervans average 18 to 22 miles per gallon (MPG), Class C motorhomes 8 to 12 MPG, Class A motorhomes 6 to 10 MPG, and a truck pulling a travel trailer typically gets 10 to 14 MPG. New York gas prices in the Westchester area generally run a bit above the national average, so budget accordingly. For a weekend campervan rental Jefferson Valley loop to Fahnestock and back, expect to spend roughly $40 to $80 on fuel. Pro tip: fuel up just over the Connecticut border in Danbury where prices are often noticeably lower than in Westchester County.
eia.gov/petroleum/gasdiesel/How far in advance should I book a campground near Jefferson Valley?
Sooner is smarter, especially for summer weekends. New York State Parks like Clarence Fahnestock accept reservations up to 9 months in advance through ReserveAmerica, and prime July and August Saturdays can fill within hours of the window opening at 8 AM. Private campgrounds like Black Bear and the Newburgh KOA usually open booking a year out. For shoulder-season weekday trips, you can often snag a site two to four weeks ahead. Pro tip: if Fahnestock is full, set a cancellation alert on ReserveAmerica and check Hipcamp for private farm sites near Yorktown and Cold Spring, where last-minute openings near Jefferson Valley pop up regularly.
newyorkstateparks.reserveamerica.com/camping/clarence-fahnestock-state-park/r/campgroundDetails.do?contractCode=NY&parkId=409What are the local driving conditions like around Jefferson Valley?
Driving here is straightforward if you know one critical rule: RVs and trailers are not allowed on the Taconic State Parkway, Bronx River Parkway, Saw Mill River Parkway, or other commercial-restricted parkways in Westchester. Stick to Interstate 84, I-684, US Route 6, and the New York State Thruway (I-87), all of which welcome RVs. Roads in the Hudson Highlands are scenic but winding, with some low bridges in older villages like Cold Spring, so use an RV-specific GPS. Pro tip: plan your route out of Jefferson Valley using Route 6 or Route 202 to reach I-84, then onto your destination, you'll avoid every parkway headache.
dot.ny.gov/divisions/operating/oom/transportation-systems/highway-traffic-engineering/parkwaysWhat amenities will I find at campgrounds near Jefferson Valley?
Expect a real mix, which is part of the fun. Private parks like Black Bear Campground and Newburgh KOA offer full hookups (water, electric, sewer), Wi-Fi, pools, and dump stations on site. Clarence Fahnestock State Park keeps it more rustic with no hookups, but provides flush toilets, hot showers, potable water, picnic tables, and fire rings at sites. Plan dump and fill stops at private campgrounds along your route. Pro tip: top off fresh water before you leave the host's driveway, and identify your dump and fill stops on the route so RV camping in Jefferson Valley feels effortless.
parks.ny.gov/parks/fahnestock/details.aspxWhat features and amenities come inside a typical Jefferson Valley RV rental?

Expect a real bed (often a queen), a kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave, and sink, an indoor bathroom with shower and toilet, climate control, dining seating with seatbelts for travel, and storage for gear. Many listings include a TV, Bluetooth speakers, a generator or solar setup, and outdoor awnings with patio mats. Class B campervans are nimble for couples while Class C motorhomes and travel trailers sleep families of four to eight. Pro tip: check the listing photos and amenities list closely, then message the host to confirm anything specific to your family RV trip Jefferson Valley plans.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Jefferson%20Valley%2C%20New%20YorkWhat add-ons and pickup options are available for my rental?
Hosts in Jefferson Valley offer plenty of ways to customize your trip. Popular add-ons include linen and towel packages, camp chairs and tables, kitchen kits, bike racks, kayaks, BBQ grills, generators, and even pre-stocked pantry boxes, each with their own fee set by the host. Pickup is usually at the host's home in or near Yorktown, Mohegan Lake, or surrounding Westchester towns, with delivery available to local campgrounds and driveways. Mileage policies vary by listing, and many hosts offer add-on mileage bundles if you are planning a longer route. Pro tip: bundle delivery plus a linen package on your first booking, you will save unpacking time and start your Hudson Valley adventure faster.
rvezy.com/rv-search?SearchAddress=Jefferson%20Valley%2C%20New%20YorkHow does the security deposit and payment work on RVezy?
Payment is simple, secure, and entirely through the RVezy platform, never cash to the host. You pay for your rental with a credit or debit card at the time of booking, and most hosts require a refundable security deposit that is pre-authorized (not charged) before your trip and released after a smooth return. Deposit amounts vary by RV class and host, and you will see the exact figure on the listing before you confirm. To avoid any hold-up, do a quick walk-around photo check at pickup and dropoff. Pro tip: keep all messages and receipts inside the RVezy app so your protection plan, payment, and any add-on receipts are documented in one place.
